Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is on the verge of completing a loan move to Napoli, which would see him team-up with former manager Rafa Benitez. With the recent arrival of Simon Mingolet, the Spaniard's departure comes as no surprise, and in interview last night, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers outlined the reasons behind Reina's exit.
Speaking to reporters after Liverpool's 2-0 victory over an Indonesia XI in Jakarta, Rodgers explained:
“Financially, it is something we needed to look at, because obviously otherwise you wouldn’t move on a top goalkeeper.
“Pepe is a good guy. I’ve a lot of time for him, and he understands totally. He’s got a big season ahead – it’s World Cup year and if he wasn’t going to be playing, it could severely harm his chances.”
For the last year, I've argued repeatedly that Reina would leave this summer, but as per usual, denial-afflicted fans refused to countenance the possibility, just as they stubbornly refused to accept that Luis Suarez might also leave.
Reina has repeatedly flirted with Barcelona over the last two years, and although Reds legend Bruce Grobbelaar is a fan of the Spaniard, he believes that his departure is inevitable. He told Talksport:
"Brendan Rodgers has called Reina's bluff. He is a great goalkeeper, but Mignolet is a good keeper. Rodgers bought Mignolet to put pressure on Reina, but he will go, either now, or in January"
When Mignolet signed for the club, Rodgers explained his thinking behind the move:
"I always felt it was important for us to have competition, and that includes the goalkeepers. I spoke to Pepe about this a few months back and told him we wanted to bring in another goalkeeper as real competition. I was very open with my goalkeepers and they know the situation".
Some fans now claim that Rodgers 'lied' about his plans for Reina, but I don't see how that is even remotely true. On the surface, Reina seemed to accept the challenge to his position, but it's entirely possible that he then decided he didn't fancy the competition, and Rodgers may have picked up on this.
As such, instead of having an unhappy goalkeeper on the books, Rodgers possibly made the decision to let him go, which is clearly the right thing to do. Reina is already the perennial number two for the Spain national team, and I doubt he wants to go through the same thing with Liverpool.

Nail hit on the head Jaimie.
ReplyDeleteIt is ok for player to talk about leaving but when the player leaves then the club and Rodgers gets blamed.
Comical.
Still gutted he is leaving. Wish pepe all the best and we will miss such a massive personality
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing Jamie. From now on I will belive everything you write and back u 110%. We have been so blind.
ReplyDeleteReina will always have a clause in his loan contract to be recalled bck if Mignolet get injured or anything
ReplyDeleteI love Pepe but im a big Mignolet fan and i was wrapped when we signed him.
ReplyDeleteWish Pepe goodluck at Napoli.
He's way passed it and lost us lots of games with silly mistakes.
ReplyDeleteDont care too much that Reina wanted to leave he has been a good servant but if it is to be Napoli then show us the money they have plenty after selling Cavani.
ReplyDeletewhy who is blaming rogers...everyone knew pepe was on his way once mingo was signed....first it was for competition ....then hes leaving because we cant afford to have him on the bench....its almost funny reading the statements from lfc now a days because they all contradict one another ...
ReplyDeleteWell put Jamie. This whole "lied to us" is pure nonsense.
ReplyDeleteI like Mignolet, he has shown form over the last season and a half, lets hope he shows consistency now for a lot more years in a Liverpool shirt.
I don't have any ill will towards Reina. He's a Spaniard and was eventually going to want to return home, his contract wasn't for life. And what better club to go home to than Barca. Above all he handled his desire to leave in an overall professional manner, only one or two come and get me pleas, unlike certain players at the club.
So best of luck at Napoli Jose, and at Barca in January, and Simon time to step up to the big time.
ive not really seen much of mingo i know hes a good shot stopper but is he good with crosses...i ask this because we where awful last year at defending set pieces and this year are team looks even smaller so there is every chance the high balls will be flying in
ReplyDeleteBut Reina said he was happy with competition and now he is of to Napoli.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but who is contradicting themselves here? Reina could have refused to go couldn't he?
Head buried in the sand?
lol they got rid to lower the wage bill, and to sat rodgers brought in mingolet to compete with pepe is comical,he was bought as a replacement,i have no problem with that if thats what rodgers wants, but to lie about the issue is foolish, rodgers tries to make himself look cleaver ,but ends up looing like a f00l,good luck pepe ,enjoy your european football ,something i doubt we will see at anfield for many a year,if fsg,do not act this summer they never will, top four is there for the taking ,yet we seemed to be determind not to except the invatation to the party,,now hes going to try and talk suarez round to staying, well maybe if we signed some players who mite actually help us get top 4 instead of more f"cking potential, suarez mite see a glimmer of hope but that is not going to happen so good look suarez as well, join a big club something we once was ,but sadly we are now not and under fsg i doubt we ever will be again
ReplyDeleteThat's a very positive spin you put on it Jaimie. However, Rodgers surely must have known Reina was never going to stay. In Reina and Mignolet, we have 2 top first team goalkeepers, signed for a team that can't even qualify for Europe - no other team boasts that quality, surely. BR would have done well not to go on about competition and Reina not leaving and now mentioning reducing the wage bill. There are times when you just don't say anything.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, it's much more likely that the owners are pushing this wage-reduction strategy and so 'encouraged' Reina's departure, so I don't see the need to blame Rodgers. I am happy for Pepe, now he can play first team football whilst waiting for Valdez to complete his last year at Barcelona. Hopefully, it will work out for him.
and rogers said mingo was signed for competiotion but at the same time we cant afford reinas wages so what that got to do with price of fish
ReplyDeleteThe club never said they can't afford his wages.
ReplyDeletePlease provide a quote from the club of that please.
its on about half a dozen liverpool related sights go look it up ...rogers has said we cant justify having 110 grand on the bench
ReplyDeleteHaving 110 grand on the bench would be a bit dumb if the player does not want to be here.
ReplyDeleteYou knew Reina wanted to leave did you not or are you going to contradict yourself even further?
We have a massive problem if we think we are signing world class players when Liverpool comes out that it good pepe Reina going on loan to lower the wages bill . As I have said here before we have sold 23 mil worth of players and bought 23 mil for those you can not count that's big fat ZERO.
ReplyDeleteSo where are lfc willing to buy Class players in this transfer market . Suarez wants those star players cause he want TOP 4 100% Swansea Southampton Tottenham have been much more active with good signings
From what i have seen i would be confident in his abilities under crosses. Granted im basing my opinion on MOTD highlights and whatever Sunderland games sky showed last year, as an LFC fan i wouldnt be traveling to too many Sunderland matches :)
ReplyDeleteI think i read a stat for him last season, he only missed two catches under pressure, three punches and won 75% of his ground 50/50 so the stats speak well but we all know they mean very little when the whistle goes.
I do remember being very impressed with his displays against us last season. especially at home.
we have no money m8 we will be lucky to see 3 quarters from the suarez sale ,cannot wait for the same old excuses once the transfer window closes
ReplyDeletehe came for one cross yesterday and was a million miles away from getting it
ReplyDeleteim not contracting anything im just repeating statements Liverpool have put out....Imo reina was always leaving he has....where is the contradiction
ReplyDeleteIF they got him out to lower wage bill Where the hell is FSG going to buy class players the only good signing is the keeper the rest are good but not world class.
ReplyDeleteOk but if you knew that Reina was leaving then how can you claim that the club cannot afford his wages?
ReplyDeleteWhat if he decided to stay?
You cannot have it both ways I am afraid.
totally agree m8 the people who cannot see it are the same people who where insisting he wad bought for competition, naive springs to mind, and now they still refuse to see the fact ,
ReplyDeletelike i said the team we put out yesterday will more than likely be the team we go through the season with...maybe rogers thinks they are good enough...suarez will leave though thats for certain
ReplyDeleteFSG cant wait to sell suarez Rodgers is saying no way just to get the fans on side FSG will have money to spend then
ReplyDeletewe are not going to buy any class players so wages will not be a problem, sad but true
ReplyDeleteWe've seen this time and time again. Notable examples would be Torres and van Persie. When BR was appointed I knew Liverpool were going down the Arsenal route. Beautiful football (usually), lot's of young talent but very little end product. FSG still have time to turn things around in this window. Dare we believe there is money available? Probably we should after the Mkhitaryan saga. The problem is, where are the players? The longer we wait the smaller the chances of acquiring the 1st team players BR speaks of, and of keeping hold of Suarez.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that our additions to date have made us any better than last season, although time will tell. Unfortunately, without the funds to compete, we have to rely on the players being hungry and BR's approach. I'm not sure that is enough for top 4 - quality is the order of the day.
he will m8 we have not tried to keep him and if he dose stay it will not be on happy terms
ReplyDeleteWe are being feed bullshit suarez want class player cause he knows FSG wont spend . suarez is our transfer market
ReplyDeleteno they can get any player in the world lol
ReplyDeletethey nearly have no one else to sell . suarez only
ReplyDeleteIMO Reina was never staying if he turned around and said he was staying fsg would have shit themselves with the world cup coming up coupled with the fact that a guy like pepe with his his personality would never settle for life on the bench he was always going to leave....
ReplyDeleteso why do the club come out with statements like hes been signed for competition ,and we are now after marque signings
ReplyDeleteWell Rodger's told us Reina was going nowhere, and look how that turned out...
ReplyDeletethe size of the team was up to Indonesia . and arsenals kids won 7.0
ReplyDeletewe are m8 but some fans swallow anything ,fsgs welcome could be well and truely over after this transfer window, like a said last season the owner as not been to anfield since sacking kenny ,he may not like what he hears
ReplyDeleteexcept the kid who is lb for chelsea as well .....we cant afford his wages lol
ReplyDeleteBut then Reina was lying to you when he said he was up for competition.
ReplyDeleteLike I said, you cannot have it both ways.
Go look at my original post and laugh with me.
On loan we were told to lower wage bill ? which is the biggest concern for everything now we have the real spin and story on FSG and Suarez it Clear
ReplyDeleteand the team we played yesterday where tiny lol......
ReplyDeleteso reina was lieing so what...in fact dont answer your boring me to death lol
ReplyDeleteGood move, mignolet is a good keeper, also reina on 120K a week no point having that on the bench, save 5.5 million a year, with him off our wage list. And people onnFSG back? seriously come on.he on 120K a week if you can get a decent keeper and younger on 45k a week then it's a no brainer.
ReplyDeletehe did want 60 grand a week a bit much considering what he has done, but nevertheless it would have given fsg heartburn, they probably tried to offer him a YTS
ReplyDeleteBut there is a new type off Liverpool fan now because off social media . they Think peter pan is real and this is a fairy tale . walt Disney is American . these guys have more stories than walt Disney . we are not living in a fairy tail . We are a club living of sale of player lowering wage bill living of sponsors dollars
ReplyDeleteYou're right, transfer list him now for January, though i doubt anyone will want him after that! Come to think of it Coutihno put one over the bar aswell, get rid now, Gerrard missed a tackle on the halfway line, reserves for you son, and Sterling laced his boots wrong, back to school in september youngun....????
ReplyDeleteno doubt they will be hoping coutinho continues his great start so they can cash in on him next season
ReplyDeleteWouldn't you agree that since FSG arrived, and more so, since BR arrived that all the press conferences and media quotes have been full of contradiction?
ReplyDeleteAs I said in an earlier post, no way can a club who is 7th, at best, in their league and not good enough to qualify for european football worthy of 2 top goalkeepers. Not only is it not financially right, but it's just downright illogical!
well we will find out against stoke first game if hes better than pepe....hopefully he is outstanding because looking at the squad we have we cant carry passengers
ReplyDeletelol dreading stoke now, hope hughesy has had time to work his magic lol;-)
ReplyDeleteOh my word!!!
ReplyDeleteThe club has never ever contradicted itself before FSG and Rodgers arrived.
???
you really do need a sense of humour
ReplyDelete100% and also he has buy out clause of only 15 mil where if he was at real it would be 50m
ReplyDeleteWe will :)
ReplyDeleteplease tell me your kidding 15m lol chance are hell be sold before the season starts lol
ReplyDeletei do m8 ,and i cannot believe rodgers has come out with all these statements without believing some of them to be true,
ReplyDeletetotally agree m8 they seem more concerned with fsg,d well being than our results, iam sure fsg have emploed a few to come on hear and speak up for them;-)
ReplyDeletedid i say transfer him lol,i just said he came for one cross yesterday and was nowhere near it,
ReplyDeleteStoke won't play like they did under pulis.... Hughes likes playing on the ground....
ReplyDeleteBecause that was so hilarious and i didn't get it :) oh thats sarcasm btw just like my last post ;)
ReplyDeletedont be cynical fsg have said we can compete with the best for the best ...
ReplyDeletelol irony is lost on you ;-)
ReplyDeletethose same stats suggest allen is a good player lol
ReplyDeletewe are being sarcastic but sadly after this reina this its not far from truth is the right money comes at Liverpool sell to buy or loan to lower wage bill which tells you we are buying nothing
ReplyDeletei know i should not be cynical, after all we have signed four players and had to beat of massive competition to get them to anfield ,i heard accrington stanley were after a couple of them
ReplyDeleteI totally agree 100% FSG propaganda police is deep in LFC
ReplyDeletethey have ways of making us talk lol
ReplyDeletewhats ironic is the way we do business nothing surprises me anymore ....when you read the account sheets on what we actually pay for players and what we receive we get well and truly b*mmed
ReplyDeleteAspas and alberto sorry for my stupid head but Who was the competition for any of our signings
ReplyDeleteMight want to look up irony ;)
ReplyDeleteits a joke m8 the old milk advert
ReplyDeleteno it wasnt the same team you will have to ask jase if it was 9 out of 10 ...or 3 out of 7 or 10 out of 13 players that where the same against arsenal ....
ReplyDeleteI think the biggest problem is that when they come in they had this Moneyball behind them . they have nothing but lies now. And there taking us out on a fishing trip and our players are the bait
ReplyDeletefsg are desperate to sell him for big bucks and then but some kid for 8m to keep us happy
ReplyDeletemight not either ;-)
ReplyDeleteWe sold 23 mil of players this transfer window we bought 23 mil Fact . we want to sell Coates but is they want to keep suarez that wont work .selling suarez again is better cause he is a profitable asset.
ReplyDeletedid he want 60g though ...we probably offered him less than he is on lol
ReplyDeletei did not know that whats with this buy out clause crap another fsg bright idea
ReplyDeletelol it was the same squad the same squad that the mighty bahrain battered 10 /0
ReplyDeleteAre you serious? every club has at least one player with a buy out clause, the agents of players have them inserted on the players contracts.
ReplyDeleteI Believe now most Liverpool fans will read different in this suarez saga
ReplyDeletei know i can see henry rubbing his hants now reminds me of a young mr burns
ReplyDeleteI was being smart ass saying that Coutimhos cluse will be stupid low .
ReplyDeleteplayers we sell dont count ..do you not know that ...when we work out what fsg spend we are not allowed to mention the money we get off players sold
ReplyDeletewell do not deal with them agents ,now it seems they all have one,i wish someone would trigger allens £30 million lol
ReplyDeletewell they had a player up front for then who would suit fsg down to the ground titus lol you can pronounce it both ways and it still makes sense lol
ReplyDeleteThem the player won't sign... Agents advises the player...
ReplyDeletei wish someone would trigger his 30 grand clause lol
ReplyDeleteSo preparing for reina departure is FSG fault? He was always going to go. So we brought in a replacement early. Reina didn't want to be Second fiddle so we send him out on loan. So how is that FSG fault?:)
ReplyDeleteCant argue with that :) lets just agree mignolet is crap and save some time
ReplyDeletechill out brendan its sunday lol
ReplyDeletewho do you have pegged for Mr Smithers?
ReplyDeleteTouche :)
ReplyDeleteYour one of the main ones,Even you can't answer. Your slating FSG for NO reason.
ReplyDeletelitter patrol at macdonalds lol
ReplyDeletetheres a good reason i enjoy it lol
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty sad then... :) but if you get your kicks out of it. Then good for you
ReplyDeleteprobably about £150 a week
ReplyDeleteWith pepe n carra gone. Now BR is real KING in dressing room ! Hi hope on this mgr can really bring REVOLUTION.
ReplyDeletePs: 1 more LS to gun down
sorry m8 looks like were stuck with him
ReplyDeletenow you are being cynical but its funny lol
ReplyDeleteThe troll show.
ReplyDeleteThat is what this site is becoming Jaimie. Sort it out.
thanks for you concern its appreciated
ReplyDeletelol do i really have to answer that ;-)
ReplyDeleteIrrelevant point. No one said that the club never contradicted itself. Point is, now there are more contradictions than I care to mention. Amplified by the fact that they are played out in the media over and over again.
ReplyDeleteAnytime.
ReplyDeletei have come to conclusion ,whatever statement the club say expect the opposite
ReplyDeleteFirst Fact, according to Rodgers the fans were told Reina had a cosy meal and was told about the competition. Second Fact Mignolet was bought for competition. Now 3-4 weeks later Liverpool have known for months his wages were too high, to sit on the bench. So what part of misleading the fans isn't clear in this situation?
ReplyDeleteIt is all FSG's and BR's fault.
ReplyDeleteBlah, blah, blah.
if he spent as much time trying to seal the deals instead of imposting as565 we mite have signed hk
ReplyDeletemore like a last supper with the messiah
ReplyDeleteglad you have finally took the blinkers off, maybe we will get on better now lol;-)
ReplyDeleteor the last supper at crispy cod with the money they want to spend
ReplyDeleteit cant be to early to call him dracula can it lol
ReplyDeleteLoL. We knew he was leaving. But why has Rodgers made himself look stupid by misleading comments, over a course of 3-4 weeks.
ReplyDeletei know 565 isnt rogers because he makes more sense lol
ReplyDeleteJason, we come back to this numerous times, do you ever listen? Mkhitaryan went to BVB because of CL. Plain and simple. Okay read it. Now keep that in your head for next time thanks :)
ReplyDeleteSo who's fault is it?
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Much like BR now saying the lack of European football has limited his choice of targets, when but several months ago, the club was claiming they could still attract the best players and that the club has the finances in place to compete with the best. Even went as far as saying that lack of European football might be a blessing in disguise. Dear, oh dear.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he lied about his plans, I think he needs to remember what he told reporters, 3-4 weeks ago and then not contradict himself by telling a whole new story. After all he is representing this great club. I rate him highly as a coach. I hope with time he sharpens up, and reviews previous statements, or just doesn't give any that might make him look silly.
ReplyDeleteI've got no real issue with what Rodgers said PUBLICLY, as it is silly season in transfer window and managers do have a habit of talking rubbish, spinning or waffling publicly for whatever reason. I wasn't that convinced that we would go into to the season with two keepers like that, I don't think he was either. I think Rodgers was just covering some of his bases publicly, for whatever reason. Even during the season, managers still talk a lot of waffle publicly. He has just got to be careful that he doesn't overcook it at times, with what he says publicly. 'On the surface', is dodgy ground in football these days, when it comes to what they say publicly.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the tour,we dont get much coverage here, whet were games like?
ReplyDeletetypical trail aspas was next level up from borini which was good borini allen and 7 others come on second half the two of them started off where they finished last year . Coutinho was our best . Borini was nowhere in second half that's all he played .alberto also looked better then Allen
ReplyDeletedoes not offer too much hope does it
ReplyDeleteWTH - I thought LFC were looking to move away from being a soft touch in the transfer market!?
ReplyDeleteI've stated many times that Reina should move on, but on a permanent transfer with the club being reimbursed. It's all well and good looking out for the player's best interests, but how does LFC benefit from doing such a favour to the player and having him come next year with a further reduced transfer value??
That's what you'd think. I seriously doubt it though...
ReplyDeleteWhat if Reina refused to leave on a permanent transfer this summer? What could the club have done then?
ReplyDeleteMe thinks he is off to Barca next summer, when Valdes leaves. Hence why this has played out like this.
If the shoe was on the other foot, that would be the argument.
ReplyDeleteLFC are one of the few clubs silly enough to just hand out first team players for free, just because they're on big wages though.
because its what he dose best lol
ReplyDeleteThe club could've just kept him - not that complicated really
ReplyDeleteyes lol a blessing in disguise
ReplyDeletei never read it any other way;-)
ReplyDeleteit would not surprise me if it was right
ReplyDeleteWhy keep him? You don't need two keepers of that level of quality. It is a luxury and a financial commitment that this club shouldn't be having at this moment. That perspective isn't that complicated really too and quite a reasonable one. Much rather put that big wage towards supplementing a new first XI outfield player, instead of a bench/rotational keeper. Most clubs don't have two number 1 level of keepers as it is unnecessary, especially when it looks like the considerably higher wage one will be benched.
ReplyDeletelol yes your right
ReplyDeletelol no i tend to read your posts i will try listening, sorry cannot hear nothing i think i will go back to reading
ReplyDeleteWhether he lied etc, at the end of the day, it's good Reina is out of the club. He's done well for us but it was obvious he thought he was bigger than the club and wanted out. The way he kept putting himself in the shop window in almost every transfer window in the last 2-3 seasons was full of disrespect for the club and the rest of the team. With him out, likely one less dissenting voice in the locker room.
ReplyDeletesorry and what if next summer want two give us £20 and a bag of scratchings ,then what ,hes our player not barcas
ReplyDeleteOf course, the club can reject Barca's bid. Don't need to point out the obvious. I never said there was no guarantee (on the outside anyway looking in) that we accept any old bid. From Reina's perspective, this loan move allows him to keep his options open. Obviously whatever option he wants is subject to us and buyer club agreeing terms. That is the norm.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how you agree and disagree with Max. You even end up agreeing that Pep was not honest in his statement but yet you still blaming BR and LFC for Pepe moving on to Napoli. How is that logical. You and CARR71 should never own a business cause y'all will go bankrupt.
ReplyDeleteAmazing indeed!!
"Okay read it" as I said. But you don't. Think you need help gilstrap help him out. :)
ReplyDeleteAfter these two bits from ESPN article:
ReplyDelete"Financially it is something we needed to look at,"
"That would be the reason because obviously you wouldn't move on a top goalkeeper."
Rodgers said: ""It reared its head over the last few months and I had to prepare for it by BRINGING IN A NEW GOALKEEPER"
New keeper as in Mignolet it looks like.
So it seems like it was very unlikely that we were going to keep both Reina and Mignolet anyway.
We save 5.5 million in wages get a loan fee, 2 million. Then he can get his move to barca, he will still have 2 years left on his contract, if he does well at Napoli then he fee would be the same as it is now because he was playing regularly.
ReplyDeleteand then hes another year oess on his cotract what then another loan
ReplyDeletejust stick to your wild transfer speculations
ReplyDeleteIf that is the case, tough. But I don't see the club playing too much hardball over transfer fee next summer. Whether it be loan or transfer, I don't see the club carrying on his wages next summer if Mignolet is number one.
ReplyDeletetotally agree should have been sold 3 years ago .now it looks like were stuck with him = loan deal and then still 2 years left on his contract jeeez this mans agent is top draw. he end up going on a free .lfc getting f"cked over in the transfare market again? cut our losses and sell him for 5 million now and get him off the books
ReplyDeleteand what if barca do not match our valuation ,if thats the case why do we not just buy a striker and loan suarez to madrid same principle opps but that would be madness
ReplyDeleteso we lose 10 million good buisness ,if thats the case we could loan suarez out lol
ReplyDelete'so we lose 10 million '
ReplyDelete£10m how?
'if thats the case we could loan suarez out lol'
Ah yes, because we're doing with this Reina, we can do it with all the players(!)
Rather silly
Then some other club will come in for him. We've already got a perfect replacement for reina in mig who on par with reina. Also Suarez? Is world class would be hard to bring in a player like him. We would need to spend 30+ million to get a player like him. also we don't know if Suarez is even going yet because only arsenal have made a bid.
ReplyDeleteI think you're on to something there with the waffling aspect.
ReplyDeleteThe way I look at it is this:
If Rodgers says that he's looking to keep both goalkeepers and then sells one, he can claim that he did it for financial reasons and so the sold player can play (just as he did). It also keeps the player in the line of thinking that as long as he's here, he may have to compete for his spot, but nothing is decided.
If Rodgers says that he's looking to sell the player outright (in this case it would have to be Pepe because he's not going to sell Mignolet after just having bought him), and then he is not able to sell him, he's going to have a player sulking on the bench from the outset since the player knows the only way he'll play is if Mignolet gets hurt.
It's simply smart politics on Rodgers' part.
Again, that's a baseless comment, if you don't like "speculations" why are you on here? Haha.
ReplyDeleteMate, I can't understand a word you said here after "room". Try rephrasing.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you predicted the Reina transfer as accurate as you think. Reina did not leave Liverpool his terms - the player wanted to go to Barcelona and probably will at the end of next season when Valdez's contract expires.
ReplyDeleteHe might of wanted to wait another year hence why the club is having it and decided to sign Mignolet (who will be a class keeper for this football club and 1st choice GK) and moved Reina on to get him off the wage bill.
Ditto, that is certainly a way of looking at it and plausible too.
ReplyDeleteYou can't show your hand of cards straightaway and to the whole world. That is my thinking when it comes to being wary as to what a manager says publicly.
If he has to go then at least let's get some cash from that transfer, saving on wages might be wise but what's even wiser is to use that cash to bring another goalie or whatever
ReplyDeleteI'm sure we'll see Reina's transfer value rocket upwards even as his contract runs down, in much the same way as Aquilani's value during his loans...
ReplyDeleteWe sure will(!)
ReplyDeleteLike I said above to Jason, it is the lesser of two evils, the loan spell. I've said it will reduce at Napoli anyway but it will reduce either way, whether he be here as a benchwarming/rotational 110k player or over there as a first XI player in a CL team due to one year less on his contract. It will more likely reduce more here than at Napoli. Not that complicated really, well I think anyway.
If Reina would have agreed to a transfer (I'm not saying he has or has not), that would have been the preferable option.
ReplyDeletethis loan can benefit both parties. what if he goes and has a huge year. it could make napoli and barca in have a bidding war getting us more money. if not it is one year with lower wages. Someone will meet his valuation next year he may not be what he was but he is still one of the best in the world.
ReplyDeleteHow is he free my friend?, when we get £5.5m off the wage bill this season to be spent elsewhere. As well as a loan-fee, leading to a £10m summer move to Barca?............free???????
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely correct!
ReplyDeletewe have a replacement for pepe becuase we spent 10 million on one
ReplyDeleteI know, but overall mignolet package is better he only 45k a week... And is 25 he can stay between liverpool post a long time.
ReplyDeleteI am assuming that the loan fee is a relatively insignificant sum, and LFC would profit more by just cutting losses and negotiating a sale this year.
ReplyDeleteYou are just assuming that the loan fee is a significant figure, and also that Reina will still command a £10m fee next year.
What some readers don't seem to understand is the politics at play. Saying you don't want one of your own players is financially and morally not a positive stance to take. Firstly your putting the player on the shelf which could easily loose you potential extra monies as clubs would immediately offer you less then what they intended for a player you wanted to keep and secondly if you make it known to the press that you don't want a player then what happens when that player stays beyond the transfer window? Someone of pepes stature could easily cause friction and divide the team. It is obvious that BR has changed his stance because solid interest has been given by possibly few clubs most definitely napoli. So now there is no need to keep things cushty. Sometimes readers need to understand the complexity of the situation instead of taking everything as seen and read.
ReplyDeletenow the mirror is saying lfc refuse to loan pepe out
ReplyDeleteif he does WELL !!! jeeez he hasn"t done well for 3 seasons
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone will blame Rodgers for Reina wanting to leave and Napoli is an understandable destination for him so the deal makes perfect sense. What gets on my nerves though is that Rodgers seems to think we're all idiots. When he signed Mignolet each and every one of us knew it would be the end for Reina. But no, he insisted, both keepers were perfectly happy and it was good for the team to have competition. Now, all of a sudden, there is a financial incentive to let him go on loan. What? He didn't know there would be clubs interested in Reina? Rodgers has a tendency to patronise the fans and I, for one, do not appreciate it. It's the same as his statement that he needed to get the squad strengthened first and then bring in marquis players. That's rubbish. First you sign the players you really want and then you add numbers. Simple fact is that he lost on the top signings he wanted to make, for whatever reason, and now he's going after the scraps the other clubs left behind. Or his rubbish statement about not being in the Champions League. I know people love to believe that but why is it then that this is not holding back Southampton or Spurs?
ReplyDeleteI have heard nothing directly from Pepe only what BR has said directly and what BR said that Pepe said. You could make all sorts of assumptions about who lied etc but we will probably never know the true story. I can though understand why a player asked a hypothetical question (by his boss) about would he welcome competition might say yes but then might not be happy when it actually happened. I would have thought BR might well recognise that as a perfetly normal human response.
