Watch Out! Herrera warns that €8m LFC signing is 'part-Messi, part-monster'.

To most Reds fans - myself included - Iago Aspas is a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment, but according to Paco Herrera, Rafa Benitez's former assistant at Anfield, Liverpool are on the verge of signing one hell of a player.

Herrera managed Aspas at Celta Vigo for almost three years before being sacked by the Spanish club in February 2013, and in a recent interview, he described Aspas as 'part Messi, part monster', and suggested that the 25-year old has personal demons with the potential to create trouble. He told Spanish newspaper MARCA:

“Iago is our benchmark. He is our star player in his own right, but there are sometimes small things that can affect Iago as a person and a player. But for us, he is like Messi for Barcelona.”

Aspas certainly has a chequered disciplinary history:

* Missed almost a third of his final season at youth level through suspension.

* Missed out on a debut first-team call-up when he was sent off for elbowing another player.

* March 2013: Banned for 4-games after being sent off for head-butting Deportivo centre-back Carlos Marchena.

* Booked for diving on his return, which led to another one-match ban.

In some respects, this sounds scarily similar to Luis Suarez, so it will be interesting to see how Reds fans respond if/when Aspas dives/elbows/headbutts in a Liverpool shirt. To be honest, the fan-reaction is as predictable as it is disappointing:

* If Aspas is a top quality player, he'll be worshipped like a deity, and any infraction will be rationalised, condoned, and even encouraged, as long as LFC gain an advantage.

* If Aspas turns out to be an underwhelming performer, he'll be excoriated by fans, who'll use any mistakes he's made (diving etc) as a means of attack.

I sincerely hope Aspas leaves the 'monster' in Spain, and wows the Premier League with his 'Messi-like' skills. The last thing LFC need is another player who misses countless games through being regularly banned.

As regular visitors know, however: if Aspas dives etc in a Liverpool shirt, I will highlight it, irrespective of how well he performs.

  1. I really think he is going to be a great player for us, just hope there is no problems with the trasfer... and what comes for that disciplinary history i dont think he is going to be anything like suarez...

  2. His temper is worse than Suarez`s is. Still I`m not to fussed to be honest as long as he doesn`t get banned to much lol. No real big club cares hence why Real will bid for Suarez dispite his track record. The true giants of todays football don1t give too hoots if you dive or foul as they prefer to just win. Wrong as that might be its also the truth, and when they pick up there winners medals no one cares a player dived etc. Sometimes I think half the reason we got left behind is because we get to caught up in morals, when if you break it down it is simply a game of football with the aim to win, not have a team of saints.

I hope Aspa does well for us, and will be interested to see where he is played.

Looks a great player and he creates chances too. Will fit in well. But yeah he will bring that over to England. He plays with his heart just like Suarez. But lets hope he doesn't get banned! Or the press will have a field day about it haha :-)

  4. My only problem with players who have a bit of fire in their belly is the opposition will needle him to get him sent off!

Well the refs will have their work cut-out for them if all LFCs signings are as temperamental as reports suggest, they will have to explain why half the team are still on the field and Suarez might enjoy some respite from the media.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The English media is doing their best to make him the next Suarez already!! Nobody told y'all to drive all the good players away. And yes those players have some issues so now let's look at some English players. John Terry, Ferdinand, Ashely Cole, Wayne Rooney and our own beloved Captain Steven G(club fight and that elbow he delivered to Davis)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah, I hope he has turned over a new leaf... If he does not, I hope he gets two kicks up the ass and gets ordered to cut the crap... Unlike Suarez...

I certainly am not going to defend him if he misbehaves... I supported Suarez despite his antics, but in the end, you know it does not matter...

But I got a good feeling about Aspas, he could be a bargain buy... Interesting signing indeed...

  10. The press are fickle, just like the F.A. Those players you named will still get printed though, as they sell papers, which is all the press care about. They aren`t interested in the truth, as the truth has no place in modern journos lives. End of the day we, or someone clearly buys the stuff they print so we play are part. No matter how much we publicly dislike it, we must secretly enjoy reading about it all.

  11. ok but a player can very well amend his attitude: can you recall Joey Barton in EPL and the same Joey Barton playing for Marseille?

  12. My goodness Jamie the moral high ground certainly is a crowded place, sometimes great players are a bit naughty... These players are aggressive and temperamental not human rights violators or members of the nazi party lets get things a little into perspective... I have a feeling you choose to be against popular figures to increase visitors to your blog... Rafa and Suarez were the best manager / footballer we've managed to attract in a couple of decades
Also Rogers deserves a bit more time after Dalglish set us backward God knows how many years.... YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  13. Has he joined yet? No he hasnt & the deal to sign him might fall through...Lets judge the player once he puts on a Red shirt theres to much if`s when and maybe with us being linked to every player going.

  14. You make a good point there! Now there is players like Cavani and Falcao choosing La Liga and Ligue 1 over the EPL. Some years ago they will be begging to play for a top four team in the EPL. True they are following the money but EPL also have money. And they are not the only ones who have made this choices.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 100% agree with you, suarez behavior right now is a shame, this guy should just wait, bids will come in for him, and he will get his move. Its not all about the media, its also about playing CL football and win big titles - thats what he wants, IMO he should just bring in a transfer request and let LFC wait for the highest bidder...

Bit off topic but has everyone seen Suarez's latest comments about how the club should listen to his wishes to leave? Based on the previous comments I was prepared to accept his reasons for wanting to leave, and still can. But if it's true that he'll be due a portion off the fee if he doesn't submit a transfer request, then I think we should call his bluff and force him to submit one, even if it's on the last day of the window. Just means we'll have to get Mkhitaryan (or whoever else upfront) first and stump the money up in the knowledge we'll get the Suarez money soon or in January

    ReplyDelete
  21. not a chance we will not make major signings till fsg have the money from the sale imo i can see it getting dragged out suarez leaving at the last minute ,and all our targets gone but at least we will be cash rich

Ha ha Jason, your negativity is admirable.

Toure = +- 6 million in signing on fees and agents fees
    Aspas = 8 million
    Mingolet = 10 million

That is already 24 million spent with no money coming in, 3 new signings and the summer window is still 2 weeks away from opening.

Expect a big signing in the form of Henrikh Mkhitaryan sooner or later who will cost us over 20 million.

That will be 44 million and our spending will not end there.

Egg in the face for you :-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. liverpool4life5654:18 pm, June 15, 2013

Mkhitaryan is a target we want anyway, it isn't dependent on Suarez, IF Suarez does go we can bring a good replacement in :-)

Agree with you :-), plus the Alberto deal-5 million, llori-3-4 million, and another centre back who we want to sign :-) will be a good window plus none of them will be us paying over for.

No one turned there back on Suarez, they just want him to keep his opinion to himself, he didn't say anything to our board yet goes away and speaks to the press about it?

  36. When "Being Liverpool" first aired, and Brendan got on Sterling for making a comment during practice, I though "Good, someone who will lay down some discipline and make these guys great players, and great role models.

Then I watched how he handled Suarez.... He's no disciplinarian. If this kid is trouble, he'll get away with it, he'll never learn, and it will eventually become a problem. Unless Rodgers has actually learned something from dealing with Suarez this year. If he can keep this kid calm, focused, and professional, I think Aspas has a brilliant future ahead of him.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I see red people5:10 pm, June 15, 2013

Suarez has shown his true colours now. The fans gave him everything and now he is stabbing us in the back blaming the media for his exit.

He is a bit of a coward. It would have been better if he had kept his mouth shut and made his feelings known behind closed doors and then the club making it public that he wants to go.

Chose the easy why out and has shown us all the finger.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jason, you should just stop moaning for one time. Were linked with some good players. well yeah its obvious a few guys will go - Suarez is one of them, our club would love to keep him but he wants to go. Believing our club is trying to push him out is absolutely senseless ...
He wants to go he wants a better team less stress, imo all of his reasons are understandable, this move will get us a lot of money. Looking at the players were interested in, the guys we already bought our club is pushing forward. Early business is probably the best thing we could do. Seriously I dont see any point to moan about. Well you might flame Rodgers again, and fsg for whatever you think. Please please Jason, just wait until the end of the season, look at our signings. If we end up with another allen+borini window I will totally understand you and back your points, but please lets just wait and see what this window will bring to us !!

  40. never said you did want him ,i said why would you him it was a question

    ReplyDelete
  41. that was comical;-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. i just get annoyed with some of the tripe we are linked to and some people would believe we were signing messi if a site posted it and anyone who thinks we are going to sign henrikh for twenty million is deluded imo he will go for more than that for a start, and if we have offered 20million for him there chairman would be an absolute fool ,everybody knows how fsg do there buisness they go in with a starting offer and if they want the player they normally end up going up between 20to40%

    ReplyDelete
  43. All players get a amount unless they hand in a transfer request, this is cause the club is cancelling there contract. It`s pretty crazy really how much players have all the power over clubs these days, but I guess the clubs let them happen so no one to blame but themselves, same goes for agents.

Agents - Clubs pay them? WTF. Again why doesn`t the player pay said agent as it is his agent not the clubs, another example of player power over clubs.

From the now daily comments made by Suarez it is pretty clear he wants to leave, so I don`t get why the club is keeping the line of everything is well, its a joke, the world and its wife know he don`t want to be here, so just come out with a statement saying

"The club is deeply unimpressed by the courting of another club by one of its players. If any player doesn`t want to be here they will need to hand in a transfer request before we will even consider selling them. All players found out to be openly talking about joining other teams while contracted to LFC will be strict dealt with and it shows a total lack of respect for the loyal fan base who supports them week in week out".

That right there will at least show people we aren`t a mug, and prove a point to Suarez or any other player who thinks that they can openly talk about joining other teams and if the deal doesn`t go through still be loved by the club and its fans.

I`m so tired of us acting and looking weak. It`s embrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Just a headbutt lol.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Only reason I have turned my back on Suarez is due to all this dribble he keeps talking every day now. All the other stuff doesn`t really concern me.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Good to know. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  47. wow that escalated quickly :-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I honestly believe it has nothing to do with the media at all, unless he is completely stupid and honestly doesn`t think he created all that media hype himself, which may well be the case, as he doesn`t seem that bright. He talks daily to the press about moving to Madrid, then seems to dislike all the press writing about him. Which is it Suarez? you don`t like the press, so don`t speak to them, or actually love them and speak to them all the time?

Me thinks the latter, and he uses them to his advantage well.

I think he just wants CL football and to play for a "bigger" club in his books, plus get paid more money in a sunny country where you can relax in the afternoons by a pool rather than sitting indoors while it is raining cats and dogs outside with grey clouds.

    ReplyDelete
  49. suarez is awesome in my eyes and if he goes i would wish him the best like iam sure you will,i agree he should not talk about it but imo rodgers opened the door for players to air there views in public ,with his attack on enrique and downing in the press

    ReplyDelete
  50. CL football is the key for me and he may think its going to be a long time of at anfield maybe if we sign the right players and quickly he may give it another season

  56. No one is bigger than the club. surely he wants cl football, he wants the real move. We want the money to invest in other players, that hopefully behave better and don't drag our image through the mire. The canibal is free to leave in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  57. thats fine thats your opinion .but aspas seems to have as much baggage

We have agreed a fee for luis Alberto for 5/6 million, :-)

    ReplyDelete
  60. no one is calling "foul play". Theres nothing underhand about it, that wasn`t my point. My point is its not on, be that one of our players, or one at another club. I dont ask players of other clubs to say it about us, so I don`t expect our players to about other clubs. As stated though, saying it once I can handle, saying everyday for a few weeks is a whole different matter.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I agree CL and money are the two main reasons, and I aint got a problem with that, my problem is with the constant running commentry he is given. He is starting to sound like Dave Whelan ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thats why i dont want him here any more!!
Well we will see jason, I think the media just tries to find the next Suarez. Hopefully aspas isn't their victim!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Of course I will wish him the best mate, and also be thankful of his time here. Still am dissapointed in how he is going about it, however there is a saying used on the film natural born k1llers which rings very true.

Snake bites a man who takes the injured snake in to heal it. The man asks the snake why did you bite me when I helped you. Snakes reply is this.

"You knew I was a snake when you took me in".

No reference meant about the biting lol. The point is I guess as let down as I am, we knew exactly what Suarez was like when we signed him, so in that sense can`t complain to much.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Aspa does. Will be interesting to see how the press deal with this. I got a feeling as soon as he slips up they will jump on the new Suarez bandwagon tag. I fully expect some lines referencing something about out with the old in with the old.

    ReplyDelete
  65. lol cannot be bothered as long as you saw it thats what counts;-)

    ReplyDelete
  66. If he slips up he will be. The press always need a whipping boy, and with Suarez gone they will need a new one to make sure they keep there coffers full. Aspa will be perfect for that...if he slips up that is.

Thing is, I doubt he would be bothered. I can`t see anyone really being that bothered. It`s all part of being famous now. Not just footballers but anyone famous gets highlighted for everything they do. Most people seem grown up enough to understand how to use it to there advantage and also how to not let it effect them as they also have the pro of earning mutli millions.

Honestly, if you paid me 5mil a year I wouldn`t give two hoots what the press writes about me.

A sign of strength is how you deal with the bad press to me. Beckham had just as much as Suarez did when he was younger. After his sending off he was hounded out badly, along with death threats from fans, but unlike Suarez Beckham used it to change how he was and ended up a model pro being deamed one of the best footballers in the world who was a great role model to boot. Or you can carry on acting like a child and then run away when it comes back on you.

    ReplyDelete
  67. but players do its a fact it happens all the time ,take the stoke keeper he did it our way ,players have all the power its a fact of life

    ReplyDelete
  71. It would be nice just for one season to not be written about in a negative way all the time lol

    ReplyDelete
  72. It would have been brilliant if Suarez purely for the comedy value changed his name to say "Johney English" or something. That would have made a mockery of the press and F.A. a lot more than what he is doing right now. Granted he would have to change his name back at some point lol

    ReplyDelete

  90. I think Cavani and Suarez has decided to play together at Real Madrid. Suarez is talking WAY TOO MUCH now. I have lost all the fcuking respect for the man. He can go as long as we get a bid higher than Bale. In fact, I want him to go asap. I don't want to see a coward like him wearing reds jersey next season. He must leave asap.

    ReplyDelete
  91. If he slips up then Aspas deserves whatever flak is thrown his way.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Haha, fair enough :-)

    ReplyDelete
  93. With respect, that's just not true. I don't pander to anyone, and I don't write contrary stuff just for controversy's sake. Over the years, I've had a few opportunities to write for some pretty high-profile newspapers/magazines, but I'm not interested, mainly because it would mean adhering to someone else's editorial agenda, and that almost certainly entails a level of pandering to an audience. What you find on this site is actually how I think, and people who've followed this site for a several years will confirm that my views on most things are very consistent. I just happen to see things differently to many fans. Here, I answer to no one; I write whatever I want, and that's how I like it.

If it doesnt work out its quite the awkward home coming lol

    ReplyDelete
  98. Oh please.
When I argued that you were cherry picking quotes too much I too said that Suarez was 90% likely to go .
If and most likely when he does, the issue still stands. One could have taken different quotes from exactly the same interview and written a piece saying the exact opposite of yours. No mention of any of positive or mitigating quotes was made in your article, which imo gave an impression which was unrepresentative of the tone of the entire interview. You just said nothing else he said mattered, I wanted to decide that for myself.
That was the point in question, not whether or not Suarez would actually leave.
As for the Press, there's only one kind of headline about Suarez which sells papers. And it ain't Suarez is staying, or Suarez doesn't dive any more...

    ReplyDelete
  99. liverpool4life5651:08 am, June 16, 2013

    ReplyDelete
  100. You never explained why you defended Neville after he did the exact same goal saving handball as Suarez in the Derby and got a red card, and just as pitiful a dive last season.
He was never associated with the word 'cheat' on your site that I saw. And certainly not 1% as often if you did. Suarez was. Repeatedly. Even before he signed, as you often pointed out. So why the double standard?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Please get your facts straight before spouting grossly inaccurate nonsense. I have *never* 'defended' Neville for his derby handball. You've made that up.
And how often must I make this same obvious point: Suarez plays for LFC; why should I care what players from other teMs are doing? Suarez's actioma reflect badly on LFC; Neville's antics do not.
In future, please do not totally misrepresent my views.

Was the head butt a full on head bashing or heads coming togeather as they sometimes do, wss his elbow any worse than flailing arm Fallani, who seems to use them more than his feet. And he dived oh no what a new concept in todays game. Time will tell. But I also belive although Suarez got his just punishment, he was also treated differently. It would be bettet to say other players have been treated more lightly not that Saurez was trested unfairly. Terry case in point.

I did not say you defended him for his handball. I said you defended him as opposed to Suarez, describing him in very different terms after he had done similar things to Suarez.

This was, if memory serves, after his ridiculous dive from last season as it was being discussed. I have no way of searching the archives for the actual quote, but it was along the lines of Neville apologised and is not in the habit of doing things wrong, etc etc. The thread on Rodgers saying he should learn from other managers perhaps?
I do not doubt that you hate all cheating, you've made that clear. But different people ARE treated differently in the media whether you admit it or not.
Hence Downing is described as a 'Flop' yet he managed more goals and assists than Welbeck, Nani, Valencia and Young PUT TOGETHER. And only Valencia made as many assists individually. Somehow, they are not ridiculed and described as flops, Welbeck is described as the future of England...
Whether you admit it or not, you are more critical of Suarez' individual actions than anybody else's acts.
And you have posted quite a few articles about non LFC players and managers

  106. I've been one of hi staunchest supporters. But this is taking it way too far. It's almost every day.
It strikes me as child-like, not maturity and certainly not family- based responsibility

  107. It amazes me that you put yourself in the 'reds fan' category! As far i have seen from you. your self righteous, pompous attitude puts you on a much higher pedestal than us regular Liverpool fans! Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, as some old book says!

  108. Here's what his club said of him:

"The club would like to express their sincere thanks to the player for his unparalleled commitment and dedication and courage with which he defended the blue shirt from his childhood as Iago joined Celta when he was eight years old," read the statement on celtavigo.net.

"His performance and contributions have been extraordinary and Iago is already part of the history of this club, an entity he carries in his heart from a very young age.

"The club wishes him great success in his new career in the Premier League."

  109. Did you misread the article or you just staggeringly incapable of comprehending the simplest sentences? Herrara quite clearly states that Aspas is 'Part Messi, part Monster', and that is clearly reproduced in the article. If you can't understand simple written English, then go and educate yourself. If you post anything else that contains needless insults, you'll be permanently banned.

  112. I stand by what I said earlier. That Suarez should just keep his mouth shut. And will almost certainly leave. But looking at his latest quote, the one where he says I will give 100% for real Madrid, which pissed me off so much today, still sounds a lot different when more of the interview is shown:

First off, Suarez answers whether he “fears” playing for Real Madrid. The Liverpool striker answers: “I have never feared the pressure. But that does not mean anything. I am a Liverpool player.”

El Pais then ask what he would bring to a team like Madrid. Suarez: “I will give my soul every time I step on the pitch. I have done this with Uruguay, Ajax and Liverpool. I do not hold anything when I finish a game.”

When asked flat out if he has an agreement with Real Madrid, Suarez says:

“No. I have a contract with Liverpool.”

Suarez is then questioned as to whether he would like to play for Real Madrid: ***“A player always aspires to be at the top of their profession and Madrid is at the top for any football player.*** But, do you know what it is like to play for Liverpool?”

***“It disturbs me that Liverpool are not in the Champions League every season. I’ve suffered at Liverpool,*** but when I think of
what it represents to play for this club, & the love my daughter has… she sings the hymn… The hairs on my neck stand up when I play at Anfield.”

Finally, Luis Suarez talks about that bite on Branislav Ivanovic, that rocked English football: ***“How much can one bite sully all the goals I’ve scored? ***… If people knew the stuff that happens to me on the pitch, the kicks, the insults, they wouldn’t judge me. I could write a book on it.”
Now- take all the quotes marked with *** xyz*** and put them all together. You pretty much come up with what I read in the papers and on most sites this morning.
He still should have shut up. But is that REALLY all he was saying?
    Hardly a monster.

  113. I'm sure Rodgers will have learned. Lets not forget how the vastly experienced Kenny treated Suarez during the Evra-gate period!

At the end of the Day, Aspas has the opportunity to learn from Suarez's mistakes, and I doubt he'll wanted to get 'hounded out' of the best league on Earth by the UK press.
