Transfer Fail: Agent confirms 'superb' €10m star rejected LFC move. Loss...?

Liverpool have pursued Hamburg attacker Heung-Min Son relentlessly over the last year, and in November 2012, his team-mate, Rafael Van Der Vaart revealed that the club had put in a huge €20m offer for the South Korean star. Alas, Son has now rejected a move to Anfield to sign a €10m deal with Sami Hyypia's Bayer Leverkusen.

When asked last month about interest from big clubs like Liverpool and Spurs, 20-year Son told Bild:

"The interest is nice, and it's good to be so popular.

"We have agreed to discuss it [a transfer] but everything has to fit, and I need to feel good"

In an interview yesterday, the player's Agent, Thies Bleimeister, confirmed that Son snubbed the Reds to stay in the Bundesliga. He told German newspaper Bild:

"Liverpool, Tottenham, Fulham, Southampton and Cardiff were interested in concrete terms. I think, at clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham, he would also be able to play, [but] Leverkusen, for the next two or three years, is the right step to develop. The Premier League could someday be the goal, but the Premier League is getting better and more interesting."

In March, German legend Franz Beckenbauer heaped praise on Son. He told Hamburger Morgenpost:

"He is superb player. I really like the way he plays: Fast and dynamic. He not only scores goals, but also makes beautiful goals"

Son has (IMO) made the right decision here. He probably would've earned more at Spurs or Liverpool - two clubs that are arguably more prestigious than Leverkusen - but it seems he's put his personal development ahead of greed, which is rather refreshing.

Last season, Son grabbed 12 goals/2 assists in 34 appearances for Hamburg, which is a good return for a young attacking midfielder. He looks like an exciting player, and in a couple of years when he's ready to leave Leverkusen (having been schooled by Hyypia in the brilliance of Liverpool FC) the Reds will hopefully have a major advantage in the transfer market :-)

  3. Rather have Yohan Kebab.

Newcastle United. Don't know how they keep on doing it, producing these nuggets of comedy gold over the last 15 years but keep them coming!

  6. Yeah sorry I don't believe in Asias players as big superstars. Call me racist, call me whatever you like but fact remains that Asian teams never win world cups, top world class players are never Asian and no matter how much Japan, the Asian champion, seem to have improved, they wouldn't rank top 10 in Europe. Maybe not even top 15. Asian players are great to have around on the flanks because they'll work their socks off, are incredibly disciplined and don't cost a bundle. Great for merchandising purpose as well. So to have a South Korean up front, I don't think it would bring much more than squad depth so I'm not too bothered he's gone elsewhere. In truth, the only Asian player I would feel would add to our squad, not even our first team, would be Honda. And before anyone get their knickers in a twist - Pele, Cruyff, Maradonna, Platini, Best, Dalglish, Kaka, Messi. Now name four Asian players who are/were as good as those were/are.

  7. Well no can know if he's a loss or gain. He was coming into the BPL which IMO is a different league to the Bundesliga and he might have been a hit or might have been a flop but one thing is sure that he has only gained by his decision as he has gone to a different club in the same league and will get to play CL so kinda smart move on his part. I think Honda should have been approached because him being a free agent, a quality player who can add to the squad for much less.

  10. He probably chose Champions League football over no Champions League football. Any footballer who has half a brain knows that earning 2 million or 3 million a year doesn't make any difference, as it is more money than any sane person could spend in a year, and every year, anyway.

  11. Yes, it could be anyone signing a Liverpool shirt. And anyone could sign a Liverpool shirt and still not move there. Do you want me to sign your Liverpool shirt?

When I see a picture of him signing a contract with Liverpool, then I really believe it, but, to be honest, it really looks likely that we will get him.

  12. and i would be really happy with this guy!

a signing like him would show were still able to attract the worlds hotshots. i think it would send out a message to other players, clubs, and i`m looking extremely happy forward to seeing this guy in red!! I still cant pronounce (or even spell) his name. Henrikh will do it for me i think.

  15. I dont think austria is the source of good football, and they have Alaba, one of the biggest young hotshots in europe.
I dont think ukrainians are the best football players on earth, but they had Shevchenko.
Can you name me any nation teammate of Honda from Japan?
Would any swede, except ibrahimovic make our first team? No, I doubt so.
Football is a sport of individuals playing together, its not up to a country, youre generalizing. Every team has his own star players, and this one is the special armenian...

  18. To add to DerBaumMann's comment, I don't think Armenia are the greatest football nation on earth and yet they have Mkhitaryan.

  19. The English national haven't pulled any trees in way over 50 years, yet Gerrard has done extremely well for us.

I actually quite liked Peter Pacult and Hans Krankl wasn't bad either, if I remember correctly.

  21. well the english national have still some "stars".

You should add Toni Polster and Herbert "Schneckerl" Prohaska to that list ;)
The latter is now austrian football commentator. Here is just a short link that makes sure you will never forget him:

  22. I think Liverpool still has a good sound to it in the world of football. I've settled for Mkhitaryan and hope it is the right way to spell it.

  23. It looks likely, to be honest.

  24. thats just what i ment, hes the special armenian :)

  25. Yeah were known, but as long as you dont overpay players or offer CL football, most promising players wont join you - thats the modern rule of football. We dont offer any of these things, but we still manage to get players like Mkhitaryan :). thats a good massage to our fanbase, and the football world!

  27. I think wages in the Prem are so good, that even a lesser team than us can attract rather famous names. Van Wolfswinkel to Norwich. Who would have thought that?

Agree, it's a real statement of intent from the club.

    ReplyDelete
  28. hahah yeah van wolfswinkel used to be a player i wanted at anfield, now we can watch him scoring goals against us at home games at anfield :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. But do you feel we missed out on them by not having them at LFC? That was the question after all. There are more decent Asian players than just Honda but I don't feel we missed out by not having them at Anfield.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Having a look at the wingers who graced our hallowed turf over the past few years, a top Asian winger wouldn't have gone amiss. Considering the commercial side of it, it seems to be a good idea, too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Was my point. But take Park at Manyoo. Always did well for them whenever he played, disciplined, never moaned about being on the bench but only averaged 17 games a season. So even though there would be positives about having Asian players, I don't feel we have missed out on any of them. I don't believe it would have made a difference to us performance wise.

  32. They also know that they'll be done working in their thirties so they need to make enough money now to sit back and relax then. Plus 2 million in wages go just as quickly as 20k if you adjust your spending pattern to your income :-)

  33. If their brains would match their income, they could live a few lifetimes with only one years earnings.
