Game Over: 'Outstanding' £10m LFC star to confirm Barca transfer this week.

Liverpool are currently in talks with Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet over the possibility of a transfer to Anfield, and this could spell the end of the road for Pepe Reina, who is reportedly on the verge of signing for Barcelona.

On Sunday, The Mirror claimed:

"Pepe Reina [is] likely to confirm his move to Barcelona within the next week.

"[Ian] Ayre will press through talks to land his replacement [Mignolet], with a compromise figure of around £9m expected".

Earlier this week, Belgian newspaper "Het Belang van Limburg" (HbvL) confirmed that a move for Sunderland's Simon Mignolet is getting 'very close', and it seems like Reina doesn't fancy the challenge he'll inevitably face from the Belgian stopper.

According to reports in Spain, the actual deal was agreed last month, when Barcelona-based newspaper Mundo Deportivo - which maintains close links with the Catalan club - reported:

* Reina had agreed a 2-year deal with Barca.
* A transfer fee of £10m agreed with LFC.
* Barca guarantee Reina will be first choice when Victor Valdes leaves.

The story was front page news in Spain:

Pepe Reina Barcelona

Like Luis Suarez, Reina - recently described by Brendan Rodgers as 'outstanding - has repeatedly touted himself to Barcelona, and although the Spaniard has stated that he is 'happy at Liverpool', he's also said that he'd 'find it hard to say no to Barcelona'.

Of course, despite the mountain of 'read between the lines' evidence, some Reds fans still refuse to accept that Reina is on the verge of leaving Anfield, just like they're still in denial over Luis Suarez's inevitable departure.

If Liverpool can get £10-£12m for Reina, it will be good business (IMO).

Didn't reina a few weeks ago that it was only rumours? I think reina will stay and we are signing mignolet because he young and for a year he can develop more on his build up for goals like reina does quick thinking to do a attack. :-)(e.g long pass to coutinho takes on Boyce cross downing header goal) :-)

  2. had a feeling this was going to happen. I think he was always the one generating unrest amongst the latins. Just a suspicion. Eliminate the cancers. Were on tract. I did like him tho, but also feel this is positive.

  3. Hope Mignolet comes out to be an excellent signing. I liked him last season. Good thing about the transfer is we save almost 50% on wages and the player will be tied for his best years. Great business, Pepe will be forever missed though. Such a class act. You will never walk alone Reina. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

  4. It's a good thing to get rid of the players who keep flirting with a move away. Team-spirit will be up. Good luck in Barcelona, though, Pepe.

  5. I don't think that Mignolet would agree to join, if he wouldn't know that he'd be our number one keeper. There's a World Cup coming up and he has stiff competition from Courtois.

True point, I like mignolet as a keeper, class at shot stopping but he needs work on his distribution to do a counter attack but I'm happy either way reina stays or goes

  7. I really like Reina, but for three years running now I've had the feeling that he isn't in it anymore, that he wants to be elsewhere. That's not a good thing to have, especially when it's your keeper who switches of during matches, dreaming of Barcelona.

  8. Well if we do sign Mignolet then it does makes sense that he is off and we are just signing Mignolet as a replacement. If Pepe goes then I hope he does well at Barca as although his form has dipped a little of late he is still a great keeper and given a lot of time to the club.

  10. outstanding my arse .I would describe reina as standing!! as the ball fizzes past him weather it be at the near post or center of the goal .hearts a t home. walcot away. goin walkabout at man city . the list is endless. he has had one decent game in 3 seasons wigan .crap on crosses if we get 10 million great .and replace him with mignolet that's brilliant business. Rodgers bought well in the jan window .the suarze money must be spent well another forward diome from west ham and a 6ft 4in center half. and ffs sell coates and another bounus will be getting Kelly back from injury. very hopefull for next season IF he continues to buy well. but the spine of the team must be right and getting a new cat is a start...

I agree this is the end of the road for Reina at LFC. If we land Mignolet and make a couple of million profit, along with the money saved on wages, it will be a good deal as i think Mignolet has the talent to become one of the best keepers around. As for Reina; i do think he has lost some form over the last season, but i bear him no ill will whatsoever. Realistically he was always going to want to return home at some point to finish out his career, and when the best team in your home league (if not the world) come calling for your services of course it will be hard to say no. He has given the club nearly 8 years of imperious service, been a credit to the club on and off the pitch. I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT DESCRIBE HIM AS A CANCER, as has been said in an earlier post. Perhaps commenting to the press about it was not a great idea, but he hasnt been, as Jamie would say, whoring himself around. So good luck to you Pep, i hope you are a success at barca, until we meet you in the 2015 CL final, and thanks for the memories.... West Ham in FA cup final anyone???

    ReplyDelete
  13. so by the same logic you have no respect for Carra or anyone else who has served the club, as they got paid a lot right? or is it one rule for some, and another for others?

    ReplyDelete
  14. yep we would have won 3 -1 if he hadn't fu"ked up on 2 goals .fa cup last year 1st goal near post again .thanks for the memories errrr no thanks

  15. I`m guessing that is why Barca, one of the best teams in the world want him, cause he is just so poor lol. You can pretty much be assured if Barca want your player for there first 11 then he must be pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  16. hopefully he comes back with a lot of confidence :)

  17. if a player justifies his wages the old sayin is hes worth every penny reina on a100k a week no one can justife that .with what hes produced over the last 3 seasons

    ReplyDelete
  18. that is a fair reasoning

    ReplyDelete
  19. hold on hes good with his feet and that's barcas style but when ur playin stoke and west ham and getting poundered with free kicks , corners and crosses ur heart is in your mouth with reina in goal. having watched clem and bruce I want a cat that commands his box and reina doesn"t

like i said his form dipped last year, but he has been widely regarded as one of the best in the world for the last 5 years, an opinion i definitely agree with. i dont think he was infallible nut i guess most people only remember the mistakes when it comes to keepers.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't know why JK you are waisting a spread on players who are wanting to leave LFC. FSG made it clear when Torres started his I wanna leave crying. If a player wants to go put in a transfer request. No more LFC keeping players who don't wanna be there. Barca are courting Agger also but we don't hear him making comments like Reina and Suarez. That should tell everyone LFC is not the one pushing players out. Suarez was brought in to help Torres spark his game and he chose to leave and we all know what happened. He still can't claim he won the CL or Europa because he was squad player.

    ReplyDelete
  22. scoring in the Europa league final and he cant claim to have won it ERRRR WTF

    ReplyDelete
  23. slightly off the point but if we do a swap deal with Real for this kid Alvaro Morato how much do we have to paid for him? No where can I see his value. He looks top quality tho, next Torres? ps Borini scored another great goal today.

    ReplyDelete
  24. He also scored in the semis against Barca in Camp Nou.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Both can go. Thanks for the service but we move on. Who'd heard of Suarez before he came to liverpool. Aspas could come in and be even better. Possitive. Suarez is good on his own, we need a team. He lost us more points with greed than he earned us. No loss at all.

  26. as an expert in the art of cating I would say he wasn't even in the top 5 in the epl petr check friedal hart to name afew have been better with out the world scene buffon etc wasn"t even 1"st choice for spain sorry m8. top 5 my arse!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I personally would not begrudge the man for leaving. He has been with us for years and wants to have a go with his boyhood club. It's hard to know how things will work out with Mingolet, new keepers can go either way! Still I wish him all the best if he does sign.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The time is right to sell Reina, but we should all remember that only a few years ago he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world (the best for me, between 2008-2010) and put in the best performances between the sticks since Grobelaar.
    He'll be missed.
Another big voice in the dressing room gone.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sorry bud. never said anythin bout top 5. Might want to read that again. as for your arse ya might want to stop talkin out of it...

    ReplyDelete
  30. The past 2 seasons Reina has been average at best...what's more concerning is his body language when he played. The H&G saga along with the departures of his fellow countrymen surely must've taken a toll so it's probably best for a change of scenery. If we sign Mignolet and Reina stays it would be a huge waste of money unless we loan him back to Sunderland for a season.

    ReplyDelete
  31. one of the best in the world maybe in ur world or wayne"s world but not the real world and 4 the last 3 seasons has been crap in my world which infact is the real world

I agree if we do get a good fee for him then il be happy to see him go but with no hard feelings, he been a good player for us over the years.

    ReplyDelete
  33. and in 12 months hes in the last year of his contract and barca offer 2 million not goinahappen get shut NOW

    ReplyDelete
  34. Goals he scored! But he will not be remembered by been the reason why they won both trophies! Steven G scored one goal against Milan in Instanbul but I could bet even when you turn a 100 years, you will remember that he is the biggerst reason why that trophy came to Anfield! As matter of fact he is the reason why we got into that knock out stage to get to that point. Now tell me the difference!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Can someone please explain why when Liverpool sell a player to either Barcelona or Real Madrid we get peanuts, yet when we want to buy from them we need to pay a premium? This really sucks..

As for Reina, whatever our thoughts on his performance for us, outside of Liverpool he is considered to be coming into his prime. If we were to try to buy a similar ilk keeper (age, experience, international standing) we would be stuffed with a price in the £20M range. So why are we OK with only getting £10M.

    Just does not make sense..

    ReplyDelete
  36. Your spelling is awful, you retard!

    ReplyDelete
  37. He doesn't fancy being challenged by Mignolet but is happy to sit on the bench at Barcelona behind Valdes? I would say I don't personally understand where Reina sits in all of this. Having both keepers at Liverpool simply doesn't make sense so if Mignolet is going to be brought in then Reina will surely be on his way out. If they both go for roughly the same fee then it's a fair enough deal. We get a younger keeper on potentially a more reasonable salary, although there is always a degree of risk when you bring in someone new. It would be more stable for the team to keep Reina while he's still clearly performing at a high level. I think there is plenty behind this that we don't know, I'd be really interested to know what Rodgers, Reina and Mignolet truly think about this situation. And not just what they say to the media, I want to know what they really think.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Best of luck Pepe.

Like Luis Garcia, Riise and Kuyt before you, you owe us absolutely nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. YES I WILL REMEMBER STEVENS GOAL BUT IF U MAKE STATEMENTS LIKE U DID IE BEING A SQUAD PLAYER AND NOTCLAIMING TO BE PART OF THE TEAM IT DONT MAKE SENSE HE WAS THE ONLY FORWARD THEY HAD. BA WAS CUP TIED HE PLAYED IN EVERY GAME TOWARDS THE END OF THE COMP, JUST A STRANGE STATEMENT U MADE

    ReplyDelete
  40. Valid points.

Perhaps he'll be paid more as the backup at Barca than the starter at LFC?

  41. THE TABLE NEVER LIES NOR DO CUP STATS !! JIMMY OUR LEFT BACK ENOUGH SAID

  42. Ok let me make it this way, if El Niño was lighting the nets on fire Chelski would have not gotten Ba. Now if any other top striker were not cup tied Nando would have been warming the Bench like last year when they had Diddier!

    ReplyDelete
  43. If true i wish Reina good luck at Barca, hopefully you have a long and successful career.
Now saying that WELCOME MIGNOLET!! Hopefully you have a long and successful career!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I understand what your saying, but he hasn't been up to his best lately, not for us anyway, if we do get Mignolet for £9m I think £12m for Reina would be acceptable

    ReplyDelete
  45. I for one had heard about Suarez, banging in goals for Ajax and wanted him here, I was made up when we signed him, and if you think we won't miss him i think you're wrong, we may still play well with the new signings, we will have to wait and see, but Suarez is world class, he scored 30 goals in an average team in a poor season, like his fabulous goal the other night, that is what we will be missing! cheers jimmer!

  46. The thing that makes Reina so special is that this guy is a leader and outspoken. In the dressing room he has the quality of a real captain and can give us a psychological arousal. I'm not sure how Mignolet is, but my own pick would be Alex MaCarthy from Reading. He is a only 23-24 years of age, and has all the attributes you want in a goalkeeper. He made some top top saves last season for a relegated team that had a shambles of a defense. And who can forget his performance vs Liverpool. I would be disappointed to miss out on this guy. He only played a hand ful of games because of a shoulder injury too which is why not much has been said about him.

Forget "read between the lines" evidence and the "refusal to accept the inevitable" with reference to Reina/Suarez but try to understand people. You claim to be a Red supporter yourself but I personally find that impossible to accept or are you devoid of interpersonal people skills because it is accepted across society that if you condemn a person or call for a person to be let go or indeed repeatedly suggest that a persons job is on the line, then doubt sets in and there is movement to secure ones financial future prospects. So may I suggest if you are a Red supporter show it by not undermining the team, by all means report the news but leave commentary that gradually weakens players morale and confidence to the likes of ManU or the Sun.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hard for us poor average mugs to appreciate the difference between a 4 million pound contract and a 4.5 million pound contract. I can't image that at his age he'd be willing to take even a single season on the bench, no matter how much it's worth. As a keeper he should be at his absolute peak and to think he's willing to sacrifice that for extra money is baffling to me. Similarly for Mignolet - he must be coming to Liverpool as first choice, otherwise why leave Sunderland who are still in the top flight and still providing him with all the opportunities needed to further his personal career in a world cup season?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Are we overestimating what he's worth? Rodgers seems to have a pretty good idea of player value, the way he talks about things he sounds like he always has a clear figure in mind when thinking of a transfer fee, so that would work both for inbound and outbound players. I can't imagine we're willing to let him go for less than what he's really worth to us. What makes a keeper worth 20 million?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Suaréz and his behaviour ensures, that it is difficult to have hard feelings towards any other player leaving.
Rumours about Reina leaving are nothing new. He's been flirting with Barca for three years, though it must be said that he didn't mention it in five interviews within a week or so.

    ReplyDelete
  51. y it will be a dissapointing end of liverpools pepe career but hope he is happy to stay at the club which had made him into a footballing superstar

    ReplyDelete
  52. if mignolet sign pepe is gone simple wether he wanted to move or is being pushed is a different ?and at 10million we have been robbed well done fsg

    ReplyDelete
  53. Mignolet won't come here to sit on the bench behind Reina. He wants to challenge Courtois for the NR1 jersey for the World Cup (if they qualify) and he feels he needs to play at a bigger club to do so. However, if he thinks he won't play, he won't sign because then he's a better chance of making the team by being a regular at Sunderland. I think he's in the final year of his contract too so if he sits it out he'll get a better deal than he would this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  54. He generated the unrest yet he was the only one to stay at the club? Or do you think Reina didn't have options to leave? I think Pepe was the only one, with Alonso, who made an effort to fit in and embrace the club and its city and that's why he stayed. I'm positive Xabi would have stayed too if it hadn't been for Benitez.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Concentrate on the bad why don't you

    ReplyDelete
  56. I do not think there is much better Reina and Mignolet tbh, Reina's performances have dropped over the last two seasons. Reina is also on Big wages so if we can get Mignolet and sell Reina for the same or maybe a little more i think its not a bad bit of business. If Mignolet gets 65k a week thats a 35k per week saving on Reina (1.8m a season) without any loss in terms of quality and Mignolet is younger as well.

    ReplyDelete
  57. listen what he done to us and the timing was dogshit im just ealing in factshe played

    ReplyDelete
  58. listen what he done and the timing as dogshit im just dealing with facts she played and she scored in the final and she got over 20 goal last season so was more than just a squad player

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not sure Reina will want to sit on the Barca bench for a year in a world cup year, especially with De Gea impressing and Valdes starting

    ReplyDelete
  60. at the end of the day people either rated reina or they didn't . I never rated reina . I like cats that are tall and lean ie clem bruce buffon .not bulked up . his distribution was great but other aspects of his game ie near post and crosses are poor .the game is all about opinions that's why we post
