Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has urged his old club to consider signing Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez as a potential replacement for Luis Suarez.
When asked last night who Liverpool should sign this summer, Nicol told ESPN:
"If Suarez goes, get Mario Gomez in.
"You'll have a centre-forward who you know is going to be right in the middle, always in the penalty box, and just have the likes of Coutinho and Aspas deliver the ball to Gomez".
In January, former Liverpool Managing Director Christian Purslow confirmed that the Reds were 'hours away' from signing Gomez during the summer 2010 transfer window. At the time, Gomez's Agent, Uli Ferber confirmed Liverpool's interest. He told reporters:
"When a club like Liverpool enquires, their interest cannot be pushed off the table"
Last season, Bayern Boss Jupp Heynckes regularly chose Mario Mandžukić up front over 27 year-old Gomez, and this had a major impact on his appearance levels:
* 2011-12: 60 appearances, including 33 in the Bundesliga.
* 2012-13: Only 30 apps, with a paltry 9 league starts.
* More sub apps than starts overall.
Speaking to German newspaper BILD in April, Ferber revealed Gomez's dissatisfaction with life at Bayern:
"Naturally, Mario is unhappy about his situation. It's also clear that it can't stay this way. He is behaving well, is loyal and always ready."
Well, after seeing his pitch time cut by more than 50% last season, it seems that Gomez has had enough. Last night, Ferber told german sports magazine Kicker:
"As far as I am concerned, the trend in the matter of Mario is definitely a transfer. He is leaving Bayern Munich this summer. We have not made a final decision on which club he wants to join, though"
Gomez's marginalisation is hard to fathom, especially considering the fact he grabbed 40 goals in 45 games for Bayern in the 2011-12 season!) And with 19 goals in 13 starts last season (all competitions) it's clear the German's goalscoring ability remains undiminished.
Recent record (All Competitions: Club and International)
* 2008-09: 48 goals/assists in 62 apps.
* 2009-10: 24 goals/assists in 54 apps.
* 2010-11: 46 goals/assists in 55 apps.
* 2011-12: 53 goals/assists in 59 apps.
* 2012-13: 27 goals/assists in 39 apps
* TOTAL LAST 5 SEASONS: 169 goals/29 assists in 269 apps.
* Scores or creates a goal every 1.3 games
Gomez's goalscoring record is absolutely formidable. Could Andy Carroll ever achieve these figures? Even Luis Suarez would struggle to consistently deliver this kind of creative contribution. Very few strikers in world football have figures as good as this. As such, Gomez would (IMO) be a great acquisition for Liverpool, for the following reasons:
* Goalscoring record speaks for itself: Gomez guarantees goals.
* Totally different in style to any of LFC's current attacking players.
* Would provide Liverpool with a legitimate and enticing 'Plan B'.
* Gomez's size/physique make him ideally suited to the Premier League.
Liverpool currently have no real variation in attack, and although other big strikers like Benteke and Lukaku are exciting options, neither have Gomez's experience and consistent goalscoring prowess.
Since he's definitely going to be available, should Liverpool follow Nicol's advice and pursue £25m-rated Gomez? Yes, he's a big striker, but unlike Andy Carroll, he is technically proficient; experienced at the highest level, and - most importantly - a supremely prolific goalscorer.
Gomez's current contract expires in 2016.

how old is he and how long left on his contract ?
ReplyDeletei said get him last week i thought gomez had already agreed to move somewhere thou maybe him and 30 million if they want suarez
ReplyDeleteHe a great player but doesn't BR like he attackers to be adjustable? In a front 3...
ReplyDelete27 and 28 in July 10th :-)
ReplyDeleteI read this morning that Benitez has signed Mario Gomez for Napoli. He would have been a great addition and is still only 27 years of age. His record is unreal but I don't think we would have been able to attract him without Champions League football. Would have been a great signing. Fingers crossed Suarez stays!
ReplyDeleteGomez has not signed for Napoli. It's just speculation at this stage.

given rodgers love for no plan b this deal will never happen ........
ReplyDeleteIm a big fan of his, and would like him at Liverpool, but I know a few people have mentioned he may not fit in with they style? I'm not sure though? Bayern play with two wingers, which is similar to what we do.
ReplyDeleteyes but bayern also resort to hoofing which rodgers wants to stop ...... face it caroll didnt even get a chance gomez would be benchwarmer at the most how is it different to his bayern situation why would he move
ReplyDeleteYes but one cannot mention Gomez and Carroll in the same breath. Gomez is everything that Carroll is not footballwise.
ReplyDeleteYou did, probably the first thing I've ever totally agreed with on lol ;)
ReplyDeleteBut what would we do with Sturridge?
ReplyDeletedunno in his newcastle days he was the next shearer :P and shearer is better than gomez (imo)
ReplyDeleteIrrespective of his alleged style, Gomez guarantees a shedload of goals. Even last season as a benchwarmer he scored lots. Any manager who ignores him just because he's big should be fired for negligence IMO. I think he'd fit into LFC's system, especially with the massive number of chances the team creates.

sturridge would start always gomez would make bench anyway
ReplyDeleteagreed ...... but will brendan rodgers agree ?
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. The only similarity between the two is their gender.

both of u forget he and gomez like to use their strength to their advantage :P
ReplyDeleteyou said that last week and the week before ;-)
ReplyDeleteimo kevin gameiro would be the best choice he is somewhat fast will be available cheap and he is good in air and can hold the ball well (with his feet ofc :P)
ReplyDeleteand the week before that :P
ReplyDeleteHahahahah! Jamie that made me laugh lol!
ReplyDeletei really say go for kevin gameiro he would be cheap
ReplyDeleteDaniel seems injury prone. Unsure if he'll play 30-40 games per season.
ReplyDeletehow did u get such a high number ? :P id say 25-30 seems a better bet ........ive seen stronger hamstrings on a 2yr old
ReplyDeletea 3-5-2 with sturridge and gomez and the front sounds nice, although why isn't liverpool worrying about defense there main flaw?
ReplyDeletewe seem to be making outscoring our opposition the motto
ReplyDeletegomez is proven and imo would take to the prem straight away
ReplyDeletehe got two in the german cup final
ReplyDelete"Steve Nicol in Shock Positive Opinion"
ReplyDeletecan be an idea but the fees is a bit huge... we then can have eriqsen and may be mkytaryan..
ReplyDeleteBetween high profile players like Tevez, Villa and Gomez....I think Gomez is the one I would like to see in Liverpool jersey
ReplyDeletehe is amazing, very similar to Aspas
ReplyDeletewell with uncle festa in goal and now gomez should we get Charlie back from stoke play our midweek games on Wednesday I think that's IT . jobsorted!!
ReplyDeleteBlimey those are some figures. Get him in now he could form a Toshak - Keegan partnership with sturridge / Aspas/ Borini. But lets get the striker situation sorted ASAP (so to speak ) .
ReplyDeleteLooks like the development is on track. Good news. at last owners who put money into our team and stadium :-)
ReplyDeletealso has a very suspect side and misses a lot of sitters. not sure he'd be value for money, also not mobile enough for buck's system
ReplyDeletefingers crossed but great to finally see something happening with that 60,000 seats and still at Anfield could be perfect.
ReplyDeleteApparently Napoli had a deal lined up but if we can we should sign him whether Suarez leaves or not. Gomez is your typical, don't see him for 88 minutes and then he scores three, strikers. We don't have one of those yet. We have the fast, powerful finisher in Sturridge, we have the second striker pain in the ass (for defenders) in Suarez but we don't have the fox in the box yet. There is no way he would still cost 25 million. Obviously he'll cost more than Aspas but Bayern want Lewandowski and they have Mandzukic so they'll be willing to cash in and get him off their wagebill. (realistically, I think Arsenal will sign him in Napoli don't)
ReplyDeleteFSG will not accept.. liverpool seem serious when they said that they want more than 50million for suarez.. and they want it cash not with exhange of players + money so brendan rodgers know which kind of player he need in his style.. take example of oussama assaidi.. he was not a player that brendan rodgers brought to the club.. rumour says that the director brought him.. thus he had not been in the manager's plan..
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the headline I thought "No, hell no. If Nicol thinks something, it tends to be wrong". I was glad to read the name of Gomez in the article. He is not all that, really. Lazy, poor positioning, selfish and so on. Look how Bayern have improved on last season after benching Gomez and playing someone better instead.
ReplyDeleteyeah there is all that but our gaffer is rather fond of tikki men :P so gamiero :P
ReplyDeleteGomez does not fit the type of player Rodgers wants at the club and he would fit in no better than Ibrahimovic did at Barca
ReplyDeleteid rather have dzeko than tevez younger doesnt have a big mouth and also not on extreme wages like tevez
ReplyDeleteHiw dies a striker who is 'lazy' and with 'poor finishing, score 169 goals in five seasons?
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't make sense. Who cares how he does it? Gomez scores lots of goals which, incidentally, is his primary purpose in the team. As such, he is inarguably a successful striker.

lol ;-)
ReplyDeleteand weres the 150 million coming from it will not start till the fair play rule stars so we will have to fund it out of less gate receipt till the works complete thats a hell of a lot of our transfer kitty gone for 3 years
ReplyDeletewell who did then rodgers bought him and never plays him
ReplyDeletewhat do you mean he does not fit in with what rodgers wants at the club,hes a proven goalscorer at the highest level or do we only want potential
ReplyDeletei read somewhere that it was not rodger's target..
ReplyDeletegomez is good jaimie but i know you would prefer sturridge. lightning quick centre forward who is mobile and can create chances for himself even without service. gomez is a player who with good service is a top player. but you wont really see gomez on the end of assists which is why i think he was dropped. look at sturridge's cross for suarez against chelsea. hes there to score and assist.
ReplyDeletewhat about sturridge. i think there is a plan in place at anfield to have sturridge hitting 40 goals a season by the age of 26 and be one of the best centre forwards in the world. have coutinho as arguably the best player in his position at 24. alot people will doubt aspas but ive seen him play and i remember even before we were linked with, i saw him against real madrid and said this guy reminds me of suarez, but plays like cazorla. hes got an incredible touch, especially at pace. and he looks like a player who can only improve by playing with better players. dont be suprised if you see 20 goals from a debut season
ReplyDeleteIn club competitions he played 32 and scored 19 including champions league. Truth is he's a quality player who will go to a champions league side, and probably one with a chance of getting to the semis at that. Liverpool really need to focus on buying according to a value rule such as: two players at ten million rather than one at twenty. That way the risks of losses are minimised as we'll keep buying players on the up rather than at the peak with only one way left....
ReplyDeletewell he paid for him
ReplyDeletecome on m8 get real
ReplyDeletethe 150million should come from the naming rites of the ground who gives a flyin f"ck if its called ie. The Ryan air anfield stadium as long as its doenst effect the transfare kitty there again u might have to pay if u want to take a piss !!!
ReplyDeletejust as long as the trafford center does not sponser it
ReplyDeleteNot for me. Gomez is a good player but I would rather sign Kiessling.
ReplyDeleteI wrote poor positioning, not poor finishing. Well, how does he not score so many goals with world-class players behind him in an all conquering team.
ReplyDeleteIf you are happy with such a guy playing for us, fair enough. I don't like his style and don't think he would fit into our set-up. Furthermore, I'd be surprised if he ended up at a top four team.
We've seen better strikers fail miserably in the Prem. Shevchenko. I don't think Gomez would be a success.
You're right - my mistake. Sorry about that.
ReplyDeleteNo problem at all.
ReplyDeleteNo, for the first XI, no. Would be a good option to have on the bench a la Hernandez but he wouldn't come here to do that.
ReplyDeleteGomez is a class act. There will be many suitors for his signature. If he can be persuaded to join it would be a major coup, and a statement that the club is willing to pay for goals when the option is there. Sadly tho i dont see this statement being made under the current transfer criteria...
ReplyDeletefans wont gomez plss.. I wont suarez to stay..
ReplyDeleteLuckily nobody at LFC gives a toss what the "expert" fans posting here think haha
ReplyDeleteName any top team that has a plan B (or even A) and tell us what that plan actually is.
ReplyDeletebarcelona plan A pass and move .........arsenal plan a pass and move plan b hoof it with walcott to giroud........
ReplyDeleteIf liverpool don't receive an offer that's >55 million we shouldn't sell Suarez. With most players, it's imperative they leave if they are want out, but you know that Suarez would still 100% commit on the pitch if he did stay, as he does love the club.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but I've never seen Arsenal do that. Even so, according to you only one top team has a 'plan B', why are you so desperate for us to have one then ?
ReplyDeleteDont get me wrong I like Gomez and he is a very good goal scorer. What I mean is Gomez doesnt get involved in the play at all. He has no pace not much mobility and you just dont see him in the build up like you would a Suarez type. This is the exact reason he wasnt a regular for Bayern this past season despite scoring over 40 goals the season before.
ReplyDeleteMe personally I would make Jackson Martinez our marquee signing this summer. I would also be happy with Gomez instead but neither will happen
ReplyDeleteidgaf what you think .......for ball i care ur a damn toffee .......and i want a plan b because our plan a never works against physical styles
ReplyDeleteyeah right, knew i was talking to a dumb guy
ReplyDeleteMuch better if LFC can get Gonzalo Higuin.....The best deal is with Real Madrid.Many LFC Fans want Real Madrid be able to break F.Torres record joining Chelsea.Luis Suarez value should be over than 55milion pound. 60 milion Plus with Gonzalo Higuin,would be great deal.Nobody will argue or refused an offer.Luis Suarez already proven his performance this season. After get 60 milion,LFC can searching Mario Gomez to be new partner with Gonzalo Higuin.
ReplyDeleteagree m8 think the price will be to big
ReplyDeleteWow, you seem pretty sure of your tactical analysis there - perhaps you should be a manager? Or at least impair your wisdom on us dummies. So, 'pass and move' you say? Why didn't anybody else think of that?? Arsene has been doing it for years - and no one thought 'I should probably move after I pass this' I wish it was as simple as that mate, as Carroll would be ideal to throw on for the last 15. But, not only is that a fantastically dangerous / expensive luxury - it also undermines the manager's confidence and ability to pick a suitable team from the off. I'd expect enough research and planning before each game - not get halfway thru and change everything to 'plan b'. Nope. That is just daft, and if we did surrender everything we're building toward just to throw on a big lump and hoof it - I'd be pretty annoyed. This is not the 70s anymore... Plan B should be to replace like for like, or maybe trickery for pace to turn the stew slightly. Also, think of how fans or opposite managers would react to that. Fans start calling for the change too early (undermining the current 11) while opposition managers think 'great, the guy that wasn't good enough to start is coming on... Hit them on the break or stop the long ball'. How simple would that be.
ReplyDeleteImagine if it were as simple as 'its not working... Throw on the big fella' and hoof it. Imagine that... Almost like you could control each player... No wait, that's FIFA. Also, do you actually think any player is happy to be plan B? CL, BL & GC winning centre forward signed as a benchwarmer. I bet he warms the bench next to Neymar, Insigne & Ananidze on your FIFA. We should probably sign those 3 too? Never get annoyed by things you have no idea about.
It is scientifically proven - the less you know, the more you think you know.
wasted five minutes of life reading all that crap ....... u may be content to watch us doing the same thing over and over again but just doing the same thing is not gonna help you everytime a plan a is playing to your strengths a plan b is playing to your opponents weakness when we had 2 plans we finished 2nd in the pl we followed BR 1 way plan we finished 7th ..... u want more proof go ask barcelona how they got hammered by bayern .........
ReplyDeleteComplete nonsense. Go ask Barça how they won the CL and dominated European football these last years. So yeah, Bayern beat them, I guess they gonna sign Carroll and switch to hoofball now?
ReplyDelete(And pls Jaimie, if you delete this comment delete his also. Why would you allow him to call other peoples view 'crap' ?)
he wont because i back my claims with facts not my problem u get all emo over it
ReplyDeleteLol only you believe in your made up facts ;)
ReplyDeleteFacts? I haven't seen one fact in your BS reasoning my friend. And its not getting 'emo' when someone disagrees with you, or request a clear debating field without prejudice. Shame you 'wasted 5 mins' I guess I wasted my time - but some people are uneducatable and are ignorant to things they do not understand... However it is very often these people that shout the loudest. Oh well, I guess you know your stuff. More so than BR, evidently. Have you considered a career in management? Or is it just easier to watch MOTD and form your own 'opinion'.
ReplyDeleteSo... Plan B. Could you run me through how that works please? So, we're 1.0 down... Throw on a lump and hoof it? Yea? OK, sounds good. If that plan is better, why don't we just start with it? Oh that's right - because no manager worth his salt abandons his beliefs and styles that have taken him to the position he is in.
yup so much faith i have in my arguments i dont go crying to the site admins to get someone deleted
