In May, Ajax star Toby Alderweireld insisted that he would reject a move to Man City and suggested that he'd prefer a move to Liverpool, claiming that the Reds 'have the potential to return to the top'. Speculation over the Alderweireld's future continues to mount, and today, the defender once again hinted that he's amenable to a Liverpool transfer.
When quizzed yesterday about speculation linking him with a move to Anfield, Alderweireld - who was crowned Ajax 'talent of the year' in 2010 - told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf:
"It's nice that you're named at clubs like that [Liverpool and Roma]. It strokes my ego.
"We have to wait and see which clubs become more concrete.
"In the following weeks we'll see what will happen. The transfer window is still open for a long time."
Importantly for Liverpool, he added:
"It would be a bonus to play in the Champions League, but it's not a must"
In mid-April, €10m-rated Alderweireld told Dutch reporters:
"Usually I do not want to play for an English club that’s in mid-table, but, unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meet my criteria"
Then, in May, he told Nusport:
"I'm very selective in choosing my next club. I do not want to go to Manchester City because Kompany will play forever. Liverpool, however, has the potential to return to the top"
With the Reds rumoured to be chasing £20m-rated Christian Eriksen too, perhaps a £30m double-swoop is on the cards this summer?
Ajax director of football Marc Overmars confirmed in March that Liverpool scouts are 'often present' at the Amsterdam Arena, so it's conceivable that Alderweireld and Eriksen could be major transfer targets.
In a recent interview, Alderweireld's former Ajax team-mate Jan Vertonghen insisted that the 24-year old is ready for a move the Premier League:
"[Alderweireld] definitely can deal with the level and I hope that [he] can make the step this summer. I know the qualities of Toby very well. He would fit perfectly."
Brendan Rodgers recently stated that he wants 'winners' at LFC, and with three league titles in a row at Ajax, Alderweireld definitely fits that description.

He would be a great addition to the liverpool team, even better if we get Erikson too.
ReplyDeleteYes, please get Alderweireld he can be a decent addition to the squad defensively but I think Mkhitaryan is better than Ericksen IMO. Denmark lost to Armenia 4 - 0 and so I'd go for Mkhitaryan.
ReplyDeleteWould be more at ease with forking out 8 million for him than Llori.
ReplyDeleteHe's the one we should be after..he meets all the criteria we are looking for,he's experienced defender for club and country meanwhile he's only 24 years old,he can be versatile(BR's preference) and could add competition to lucas if he really hold on to play that in Defensive midfield where we should add competition,he could cost us around 8-10m so it wouldn't be a block and specially he loves to join liverpoo..so he would be fantastic addition to the squad as we could facing difficulty to attract top class players due to lack of European action so its only our self to blame if we failed to sign him while we are chasing less experienced and overrated PAPADAPOLOUS....
ReplyDeleteNot gonna lie, the very prospect of Alderweireld and Eriksen is mouthwatering. I doubt it will happen but I would love very much to be proven wrong. Too many times in the past players have talked about how liverpool is a dream club etc etc (Turan comes to mind) and then nothing comes of it. It would be amazing to be able to stick it to all of the gobshite mancs with their nobody manager, plastic chelskis and their pig of a manager and the crew in all white who circle-jerk to images of Gareth Bale, Jan Vertonghen and Harry Redknapp, who constantly say that we aren’t a big enough club to attract these kinds of players. This season will be a statement. In BR we trust. YNFWA
ReplyDeletewasnt he supposed to have agreed terms with roma ?
ReplyDeletedid you even bother watching the euros he was excellent alongside papasthapolous
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting this guy for ages. Vertongen was NO.1 choice last season and he ended up at Spurs . Hopefully ALderwield doesn't end up there aswel but he prob will.
ReplyDeletePAPA
ReplyDeletejust wish we would sign a defender wether one is needed is another thing imo if we play the same as last season whoever we sign will be left exposed
ReplyDeletewhat worries me is the lack of height in the team every free kick or corner we struggle to clear our lines with Rodgers in charge its like 5 a side (no over head height) we need a couple of 6 ft 3 in players center mid and cemter half we have a 6ft 3in center forward but he wont play him. might as well change our famous athem from ynwa to high ho high ho!!!!
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who keeps getting that annoying news video of tito tilanova on the side of the page? The translator's voice is uber irritating!
ReplyDeleteagree we need some muscle when teams are prepared to battle we get bullied
ReplyDeletewe either need muscle in the middle of the park or better smaller players that can pass it around a lot quicker. I would prefer to see Toby instead of Papa, i think he is more value for money and we need a Belgium in our team as well!!
ReplyDeletegetting the two would be great and all but do we have that type of money to spend? (obviously not including Suarez's transfer fee there)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah lets bring Big Andy He'll solve all our problems and because of him we'll win the league..... :/
ReplyDeletePapadopoulous first!!! He got height and strength and he would compliment agger :-)
ReplyDeletewell he didnt say that ;) he just said hes ignored by BR and thats true. IMO he could offer a lot of positive things to our squad, improve depth and our versatility... You need players like Big Andy to being present at the back and up front, corners standarts - doesnt matter if we have to defend or attack. But he´s gonna join Westham and thats a good thing for us. 15m are a lot of money and i hope we spent this addition whisely, prefered on 1-2 CB´s.
ReplyDeletei prefer him too, but keep in mind he would be the most expensive of the 3 (alderweireld, de Vrij and the greek giant)
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. I've said this for ages...Whenever we lose the ball all we have is Lucas and the 2 centre backs to deal with it. That's a massive problem that can't be overlooked. People can blame Skrtel all they want but he's just the scapegoat.
ReplyDeleteI dont feel the team has gotten to terms with Rodgers entire system yet and this upcoming season we should play better...but either way defence is a mess.
The difference in value is reasonable. Its papa's knee injury that worries the most. Knee injuries are always recurring. But we still need muscle at the back. Toby and Agger will be run down by most forwards in PL physically.
ReplyDeletethats true, and papa is a hulk in defense.
ReplyDeleteYoure right knee injurys should always be taken seriously...
agree but why we need a belguim god knows
ReplyDeletewhen the full backs go forward no one covers them thats the problem
ReplyDeleteme to it sucks
ReplyDeleteIt's the latest fashion, everyone has one :-)
ReplyDeletelets get one quick then;-)
ReplyDeleteNo, it was just rumors.
ReplyDeleteMAMA :P [mamadou sakho :P] he got less time at psg could be tempted with game time
ReplyDeletede vrij agreed a new deal .....so he would be even costlier now
ReplyDeleteAgree Skrtel wasn`t the problem, the lad hardly played lol
ReplyDeleteDM, DM, DM, and DM that is what we need signed.
ReplyDeleteagree but unless every one covers we will still be exposed
ReplyDeleteBut thats what he was probably implying, yeah I have faith whatever money the club will spend it'll be spent relatively well,we seem to have people who are actually being smart with the buys, maybe but its too early to tell yet :P
ReplyDeleteIt's the lack of pace in the team that makes the gaps we leave such a killer - we probably get punished for individual mistakes more than any other team, as teammates are unable to catch up and cover up in time (actually Johnson does usually get back tbf, but he just consistently fails to do anything to recover a bad situation once he gets back into the position)
ReplyDeleteWe look intent to rebuild the new Arsenal, warts and all
ReplyDeleteExcept they did it from a team of Champions, whereas we're doing it from a starting point of 8th...
the translator shouts when he speaks for Christ's sake!
ReplyDeletethis particular transfer is beginning to bore me to death !!
ReplyDeleteand look what happened to them lol
ReplyDeletejohnson imo is a fail winger
ReplyDeleteturn it off i have
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good player. Very Solid. All depends on price tho...
