'We love him' - LFC want to sign coveted €8m 'Player of the Year'. Priority...?

Of all the defensive positions that need strengthening this summer, right back is arguably the least of Liverpool's priorities this summer. The club has a whole host of options to fill that role, including Glen Johnson, Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly, but according to reports today, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has his eye on a new right back.

Man City are also tracking Byram, who was recently named Leeds United Supporters' Club player of the year, and a report in The Mirror today claims:

"[Brendan] Rodgers wants £7m-rated right-back Sam Byram from Championship side Leeds.

"The Yorkshire club have resigned themselves to losing the talented 19-year-old - also a target for Everton - and have already lined up Manchester City starlet Reese Wabara as a replacement".

When asked about Byram's future in April, Leeds United boss Brian McDermott made it clear that he doesn't want the youngster to leave. He told the BBC:

"Sam leaving the club is not something that has crossed my agenda. People can talk about whatever they want, but for me the best place for Sam is Leeds - playing and doing well. He’s a Leeds boy – the fans love him, the staff love him, the players love him"

In another interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post at the end of April, McDermott enthused:

"He's a super fellow, but what strikes me more than anything is his [Byram's] character, personality and mentality. He has the great mix of talent, work-rate and the hunger to get better. Given all of those things, it gives him a major chance of being a top player.”

At 19, Byram has made 53 appearances in his debut season, which is admittedly impressive, but seems like overload for such a young player. When asked recently about a possible move to the Premier League, Byram told reporters:

“It’s nice to hear that Premier League clubs are interested in me, just because it shows that I’m doing a good job here, but personally I’ve really enjoyed playing at Elland Road. The best way to learn is by playing games and the new manager’s been unbelievably encouraging with me.”

£7m for a Championship player Liverpool even need? I don't see the logic here, unless Kelly and Wisdom are being groomed to take over in central defence, which doesn't look likely at the moment.

Byram could be a star of the future, which is probably why Rodgers is interested, I'd be disappointed if the Reds spent £7m on this teenager. Surely, at this stage of LFC's 'transition', that money should be spent on a higher priority signing, and preferably a player with more experience?

Byram's current contract expires in 2016. Good idea to bid...?

  1. Exactly... I see McLaughlin taking over that position in the next few years as he looks a proper talent....!!! Don't see the need for such a pirchase unless it's a case of buying to sell on for a bigger fee. That's the only reason I see behind the purchase.

sold players will be skrtel £10m. carrol £15m, Coates £4m, Allen £7m, Spearing £1m, Borini £6m. all together thats £45M.

incoming players Henrikh Mkhitaryan £12m CL experienced 30 goal midfielder/striker if needed, Tom Ince £8m but 35% off so £6m 18 goals 15 assists and still developing, Mohammed Diame £3.5m our new power maestro, Tiago Ilori £3.5M 6ft3 but yet fastest centre back in world football, Keisuke Honda will cost a mere £3m in summer or be up for free in november, bargain for world class player. all this cost £28M.

expect alot of goals, 2 trophys and a top four if our summer goes this way. bare in mind all these players are heavily linked to the club

  4. Not a bad replacement for REINA if true.SIMON MIGNOLET would've been the other stand out available PL option.I hope the fee is decent because our PL buys in recent years have been heavily overpriced!

  5. Too short to play defense...and we already have these guys playing RB. Use the money to get the Greek kid...and another big, strong, smart, mean, fast central defender

We have McLaughlin I don't think we even need to consider investing in 'future talent' in the right back position. Plenty covered there. A LB on the other hand might be a bit more of a priority but we certainly need to sort out personel in the centre of defense before much else happens.

  7. You could consider this as a positive sign. If there is money to sign players for positions we don't immediately need to strengthen, there is bound to be enough money to spend on positions we do need to strengthen. Or maybe it's just because GJ is leaving.

  8. there is talk of a swap Beggo for Downing, but Stoke have no Manager so that might have changed the deal.

  9. Sam Byram is a brilliant player, and one for the future. He had Gareth Bale in his pocket when Leeds beat Spurs in the Cup, he did well against Zaha from Palace, he's everything you could want from a player and more.

  10. JK - Just found out that kiwi guy Rojas has signed for Stuttgart the beginning of the month. I missed that on here :-)

  11. Yeah, I didn't cover that. No real point as it's not a loss (IMO). Could've been handy on a free transfer, but looks like LFC weren't interested. Or, perhaps Rojas snubbed the Reds for Stuttgart?

  13. Smart kid imo. The bundesliga is getting increasingly stronger, money is not too tight either and he'll probably get more time on the pitch there. Big money moves to Spain and England can also be made when you're 25/26.
