'He's incredible' - LFC chase exciting €20m star Guardiola called 'fantastic'

Liverpool have been linked with several Barcelona players over the last year, including Cristian Tello, Alexis Sanchez, Thiago Alcantra, Iaaac Cuenca, and Jonathan Dos Santos, and the latest Barca star to enter the Reds's slipstream is promising midfielder Martin Montoya.

A report today in Spanish newspaper Sport claims:

"Liverpool are planning to make a move for Martin Montoya, and the club has already enquired about the status of the player.

"Brendan Rogers is a big fan of the Barca player, and wants to sign him to strengthen the right side of Liverpool's defence"

Judging by his recent comments, Montoya is happy at Barca and doesn't want to leave. He told Marca:

"It makes me feel proud. I have played here for 12 years now, and I have never wanted to leave. Barca are the team of my dreams.”

"Training with the first team means working at a high rhythm, and always giving everything. You learn a lot in a short period of time."

Due to injury, Montoya got a golden chance to impress in last season's Copa Del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao, Pepe Guardiola's last game managing the club. He played the full 90 minutes, and after the game, Guardiola enthused:

“Montoya had a fantastic game, he has many great years in the club ahead of him”.

Current Barca boss Tito Villanova also rates Montoya, and after the 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in October, he told reporters:

“Martín had to jump straight in and had Cristiano Ronaldo against him on his flank. But with the match he played, he showed us that he is an incredible player who can jump straight in, adapt and play great”.

With Rodgers in charge, Liverpool's repeated interest in Barcelona youngsters makes perfect sense, but it's doubtful that he has the pull to attract these stars of the future to Anfield.

Competition for Glen Johnson at right back would definitely be a good thing, but it's not really a priority position at the moment, especially with the likes of Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly in the squad.

In any event, to players like Tello, Sanchez, Alcantra etc, Liverpool must look like a massive step down from Barcelona, and although the Reds have an amazing European history, these players are probably not even aware of it.

Montoya's contract expires in the summer of 2014, and his buyout clause is €20m.

  1. I would love for him to join the club. He seems like a good prospect. I don't know why but I am really looking forward to this years transfer window.

  8. We should sign an agreement with La Masia as a feeder club. Barcelona have too many players waiting to get a first team experience. I think they should all come to Liverpool. La Masia should send 5-6 players every year on loan to liverpool. In the loan period if someone likes our club and if he is good, we can bid.

  13. I hope next season LFC will fix all position leaking and weakness.Attackin players should get top world class as Christian Eriksen,Henrikh Mkhitaryan with 1 more new striker. Why not try doing crazy signing like Cavani and Higuin??? Carroll and Borini is stiil not good and just ordinary player.Cannot push to higher level yet.Cavani and Higuin can making LFC lokk diffrent next season.CDM areas also need attention to be fix it.Lucas can making highly tackle now at BPL but not to creative assist foward players. This is the problem. How many goal that he score untill now???Not more than 5 goal for all games.Chiek Tiote,Lucas Biglia,Extrrebarria iand diame is good candidates to get sign after we we miss out Yann M’villa. Why not Mussa Sissoko from NUFC?NUFC now intressting to sign in Carroll and Jay Spearing. Please try get the best offer from Nufc…..swap with sissoko.Great player and not so easy to hijack the ball from his foot. Can you see it?Position centre back is not only solid and tough players but also can able scoring the goal like Mamadou sakho and Matts Hummells.
