What a Joke: Insulting Man Utd fiasco proves POTY awards are a total farce

The PFA player of the Year nominations are in, and as per usual, certain nominations are a total farce, with the this year's most egregious nod going to Manchester United 'striker' Danny Welbeck.

It really beggars belief: how is it possible for a striker with 2 GOALS IN 38 APPEARANCES to be considered one of the year's best players?

Am I missing something here? I may may be wrong, but the primary purpose of a striker is to score goals, is it not?

In that regard, 22-year old Welbeck has clearly failed miserably. Additionally, he's not even a regular for United, and he's spent most of this season either on the bench or being subbed-off.

As a comparison, Andy Carroll has six goals in 21 games this season, so why isn't he up for young player of the year? Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho should also be in with a shout, surely? After all, he's grabbed 5 goals/assists in just 8 games, which is more than Welbeck has managed ALL SEASON.

Where is the logic in nominating Welbeck? What has he done to deserve this acclaim? I can think of at least two players who are more deserving of recognition:

* Andreas Weimann: 11 goals/3 assists in 31 apps for Aston Villa.
* Jay Rodriguez: 9 goals/5 assists in 32 apps for Southampton.

Both players have made a huge difference to their respective teams, and they've managed to consistently score/create goals despite playing in vastly inferior teams to Manchester United.

It makes no sense whatsoever to nominate Welbeck, and it's a massive insult to all the other young players in the league who've done comparatively better this season.

And don't get me started on Michu's omission from the nominations...

  1. There needs to be an official enquiry into the running and refereeing of English Football going back to the formation of the FA Premier League in 1992 - theres dodgy dodgy and sinister things to be found out there.

  2. two facts - man utd have not had one penalty given against them in the league this season - mark halsey has ben in charge of 31 man utd games they drew a few and won the rest, never lost one.

  3. People need to realise just how bent the F.A and the premier league really are but every time someone stands up and points out all the shady krap that keeps happening they are ridiculed and told to shut up!

The whole system is bent and stinks to high heaven!!

  5. POTY is very politically motivated, like when Giggs won the award in 2009 with 15 Prem League starts......

It was a tribute, and must have been orchestrated......

The only awards that matter are winner's medals combined with tangible contribution to the success

  6. As a United fan, i agree. Nominating Welbeck is absurd. This season he has not played much in the starting role, and when he played he was usually out of position. Hes only really good game was vs Liverpool at the Old Trafford and Real Madrid in the Champions League (-remember that one?!) but that doesnt count of course. Now, having said that I believe that POTY should go to Carrick, he has been outstanding this season. With Yaya Toure best midfielder by far. And Liverpool fans, you should stop with the conspiracy. Come on. United is just that good, no team has that character strength.

  7. Why should Suarez be considered when he is part of a team that has won nothing and is unlikely to get into Europe where as Michu is part of a Swansea team only 2 places behind Liverpool who have won a cup and are in Europe next year! And let's not talk about Wilshere or Hazard!

  8. Agree 100%
I thought Carrick's inclusion was bad, but Wellbeck.....
Just goes to show, the media decide who's hot and who's not.
But don't worry, Suarez doesn't stand a chance

  9. Um because it's player of the year not team of the year?

  10. Why not nominate the entire United team them for POTY? Welbeck's played a majority of those games... can we also nominate Rooney, Kagawa, Evans, Evra. They've played a number of games this season and United's 31 points better.

Bottom line is that you can't use "he's played the majority of the games" as the main reasoning for being nominated for POTY.

  11. the players vote and the 6 with the most votes are announced

  12. That's a good thing because he's a whiny racist that doesn't deserve any plaudits. By the way for all the ijits out there, Welbeck was in the running for young player of the year, not player of the year. F8ck the ignorance of some of these drunken sots is just hilarious. But what can you expect for dumpster divers.

  16. come on m8 no need for insults even utd fans admit by far your most important player this year as been mark halsey,

  17. Young player of the year you idiot. Not POTY. He's 22 and came in to play 3 different positions in season which has seen united storm the premier league and unluckily go out of europe. You twats know nothing about football, and who can blame you, having to watch John Joe every week has rotted your brains.

  18. Funny how the media haven't pointed out Rooney's serious lack of form, from a so called "World class" player. To think they tried to rank the tupee king alongside Ronaldo!!
    As for Welbeck mmmmm?!

  19. It's mind-boggling to see some people still rant on about teams not being given penalties against united, decisions by the FA, etc. when that team is comfortably winning its 20th title and sits 31 points ahead of us. Decade-long self-delusion by fans, owners and the board has certainly been one of the main reasons that brought us to the current catastrophic state.

  20. interestingly you didn't mention how De Gea and Rafael aren't in there either....

if you also had half a brain you'd know that Coutinho would never ever be in there considering when the voting is done.

  24. It's Andreas, not Andrew.
As a Utd fan we all agree it's a travesty he's in there ahead of the likes of De Gea, Rafael, Nastasic, Shaw,

The bigger travesty is Wilshere is in there

  25. lol Carrick's inclusion was bad?
Stick to what you know best, playing the victim.

  27. all your posts on here are conspiracy driven, childish, bitter drivel, you should consider growing up.

You'd think after Hillsborough and the whole Sun debacle, you'd not accuse anyone of wrongdoing without proof.

    Immature little boy.

  28. If you had 'half a brain' you'd realise that my Coutinho comment was flippant, not an actual call for him to be included in the vote.

  30. Too good? Pass the crack pipe please! They're the best team in a league that everyone else has been poor in, Fact! How michu wasn't nominated is beyond me.

  31. Welbeck has been played more as a winger this season and he has shown incredible work rate and contributes a lot to the side. You need to look at more than goals. Although he shouldn't win he deserves to be nominated and he showed in the games against real madrid how good he is.

  32. Mate you saw what happens when a ref is not influenced by the FA....you lose ! Long live real madrid! :)
