In November, Rafael Van Der Vaart let slip that Liverpool had put in a huge €20m offer for Hamburg team-mate Son Heung-Min, and this prompted the club's general manager Frank Arnesen to publicly urge the South Korean striker to commit his future to the club. Liverpool have been linked with a move for Son several times over the last year, and in his latest comments, it seems that he still have his heart set on a move this summer.
In November, Son insisted that it would be 'very hard to say that I will renew at the moment', and when asked last night about interest from big clubs like Liverpool and Spurs, the 20 year told Bild:
""The interest is nice, and it's good to be so popular. We have agreed to discuss it [a transfer] but everything has to fit, and I need to feel good"
A few days prior to this, Arnesen made another public plea for Son to stay at Hamburg. He told NDR television:
"We would really like to keep hold of him. We are at a good stage with him and his contract extension so I am positive that we will extend with him for the long term"
In an November interview with BILD, Van Der Vaart specifically referenced the Reds' interest in the South Korean striker. He said:
"It is tempting when Liverpool informs you of a twenty million offer, but he [Son] must stay here! He has the confidence, he plays regularly and can be better. For us he is a very important player"
Son - whose current contract expires in 2014 - is known for his dribbling skills, close control, and electric pace, and Hamburg coach Thorsten Fink believes his form in front of goal has drastically improved recently. He enthused:
“He practises shooting in training every day and it shows that doing more than others pays off.”
In March, German legend Franz Beckenbauer heaped praise on Son. He told Hamburger Morgenpost:
"He is superb player. I really like the way he plays: Fast and dynamic. He not only goals, but also makes beautiful goals"
That may be the case, but Son is hardly a prolific goalscorer. Last season, he grabbed 6 goals in 31 appearances for Hamburg, which is nothing to write home about.
Still, he looks like an exciting player. Should Liverpool pursue him this summer? Coutinho is the same age, and he's come in and done a great job; perhaps Son could too...?

rather have eriksen as our summer marque signing ,we need an out and out stiker
ReplyDeleteHe looks like a tidy exciting player. Would not mind him here, but £20M? Surely that is too much.
ReplyDeleteAfter last night, I'd raid Dortmund's team for as many players as we can afford!
ReplyDeleteStill puzzled as to why Gotze would leave Dortmund for Bayern. That team has so much potential. He is only 20 as well.
ReplyDeletewe cannot afford none lol
ReplyDeleteWell it would be hard to turn down the offer. I remember Dortmund re-signed him for a very long time (maybe 6 years) but that was obviously just to increase the release claus to the 30something million, previously it was reported it was only 21m in his old contract. But I agree with you, if I was him I wouldn't move, it's his boyhood club, he'd be a top earner anyways, and the fans are amazing. Very few bigger clubs than Dortmund right now. Bigger than Liverpool...
ReplyDeleteWe have an outstanding young German in our books in Samed Yesil that Big Sami sent over to us. After Tuesday and Wednesday nights' developments in the CL, I am sure that everyone will be watching his development carefully and hoping that he is soon playing at a level where he merits a regular first-team place.
ReplyDeleteSo we can afford them all?
ReplyDeleteDouble negative touche ;-)
ReplyDeletei think 20m is a bit too much for what we are looking for. FSG are looking for Coutinho type players and to be honest Coutinho is the shining example for their policy; young, quality and above all else cheap with a sell on value just in case he gets the calling from Spain and inevitably moves for bags of cash. Its a good policy as long as we get more Coutinho and less borini's, other wise we may as well go and spend 30 million on 1 player as at least he will be guaranteed a game and will hopefully play quality (oops i forgot about carroll):)
ReplyDeleteBR will no doubt get a hold of them and after the 2 hour conversation and shoulder rubbing, they will instantly turn into pumpkins!!
ReplyDeletelol are you kanwar in disguise
ReplyDeleteNot bigger than Liverpool Pete but have a better team at present.
ReplyDeleteHmm maybe so but the potential is there, especially with 80K fans in the stadium every week and a top, proven manager.
ReplyDeleteLFC are then,a selling club,as in the way Torres was used by the Amercan owners!
ReplyDeletePotential is good but we will NEVER have an 80K stadium so remain mid/upper.
ReplyDeleteI was referring to Dortmund and their potential, with their massive stadium and stuff...OR did I read this wrong?
