'It's not easy' - LFC considering shock move for unhappy Man Utd star.

After a (self-confessed) shaky six-months between the sticks, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is experiencing something of a resurgence at the moment, and with three clean sheets in the last four games, the Spaniard is showing the kind of form that built his reputation in the first place. Whether he'll still be at Anfield next season is still an open question; the Reds continue to be linked with new goalkeepers, and the latest name to enter the fray is possibly the most improbable so far.

According to Danish newspaper Sporten, Liverpool are keeping tabs on United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, who features alongside Daniel Agger for the Danish national team.

In March, the Dane made it clear that he is unhappy sitting on the bench at Old Trafford. He told Reporters:

"It’s not easy deal being on the bench. Everybody wants to play and I’m not different from anyone else. I’m sure all the players who are not in the starting line-up every game would say the same.

"That’s how football players are. It’s a genetic thing in us - we live for the thrill of playing and the adrenaline you get when you step out on the pitch"

Lindegaard's frustration is understandable:

* Only 11 appearances this season.
* Hasn't played one minute of football since Jan 16th.
* Unused sub for 32 games this season.
* Unused sub for the last 15 games.

At least Liverpool back-up goalkeeper Brad Jones gets a run out every now and then (!)

Generally, I don't understand why back-up 'keepers don't get more pitch time when their team is winning comfortably. For example, in Lindegaard's case, why didn't Alex Ferguson give him some minutes when United were (recently) beating Wigan and Norwich 4-0; Fulham 4-1, or Aston Villa 3-0?

Additionally, you'd think that since United have already won the title, it might be a good time to give Lindegaard some pitch time, but Ferguson still went with De Gea against Arsenal. Surely, to keep back-up 'keepers sharp, they need to get *some* time on the pitch during the season?

Is Lindegaard a better option than Brad Jones? The transfer will probably never happen as it involves Liverpool and Man Utd, but if Lindegaard came to Anfield, I sincerely doubt he would dislodge Reina, and he doesn't have the experience to replace the Spaniard outright.

  2. Jaimie, You are factually wrong on quite a few things here. Lindegaard has played football for United since January. You fail to mention that he was involved with the U21's as an overage player!

Also you suggest that he has been an unused substitute for the last 15 consecutive matches! Wrong in the last 15 consecutive matches he was unused for 13 and the other two Ben Amos was the sub keeper.

You also seem to think you know more than Sir Alex by suggesting that he replace the keeper when the team were ahead by a few goals.

Perhaps you need to do a little bit more homework on your statistics next time. At least get them right!

  3. Doubtful! But you make a good point on the backup keeper bit. It's a very important position to spend the whole year not playing and then be expected to come in and not make any mistakes. I think Jones is fine as a backup keeper, yeah he's not world class but what team has such options. He hasn't let us down too badly yet!

  4. Alex Pearce the Reading CB has agreed a deal with Liverpool in principle?, many outlets are reporting this. He plays for Eire but has refused a new deal to join Liverpool on a free in the summer?, he does look a very dominant CB, just what we needed.
BR had him as vice captain at Reading, on a free he is a good signing for sure!!!

  5. What do u reckon on Alex Pearce?, JK did a piece on him a while ago, he looks a decent defender.

  7. Its goalscorers we need. can't have enough - goals win points and win trophies.

  8. As an Aussie, I would hate to see Brad Jones go, and also without much opinion on Lindegaard, my automatic answer is that Jones is a better option.

  9. Could be a decent defender, but you can't imagine a Premier League winning team with Alex Pearce and Ashley Williams at the heart of the defence. We're linked to a lot of players and some of them infinitely average where you think they'd be decent additions to the squad but not boost our chances of improving our league position. I'd much rather see us buy two players who would improve our first 11 than four who would improve our first 25.

  10. Alex wouldn't sell us a fucking spearmint (even though he has a lifetime supply) let alone an actual footballer (remember Gabriel Heinz?).

  11. No chance of this happening nor would I want it to. Would be a waste of money. If we are going to buy a backup keeper, which in my mind we definitely need to do to push Reina, it should be someone possibly younger and of quality that could replace Reina in the long run as well as pushing him for his place in the starting 11. Marc-André ter Stegen perhaps or Rui Patricio also seems quality.

  12. Jones is decent enough and he hasn't let us down majorly as of yet but is it just me or does everyone else get extremely nervous whenever he plays? Granted I get that feeling when liverpool in general play these days but you get my point. I think we need a backup keeper who is not only an able and ready replacement but someone who can actually challenge and push Reina for the starting spot. It just seems to me like Reina has grown incredibly complacent over the past few seasons. Hs form has improved dramatically of late but I think that can be helped and maybe even pushed forward by signing another quality keeper.

  13. Pepe will finish his career at Liverpool, just ask him!

  14. Yeah right, scored more goals than usual this season, see us winning anything?

  18. It is surely tough to be a backup 'keeper, but I wouldn't start switching them in game, even if it is won. You have to think about the bond between the 'keeper and the defenders. You don't want to undermine that understanding.
Cup game for backups is the way to go.

  19. Julio Cesar is probably the best keeper in the Premiership and is available on a free.

  20. Lindegaard is a very good goalkeeper.

Too good to be an understudy

  21. While it would certainly be nice to have a better back up, I think it would be tough to bring in someone to challenge Reina for two main reasons:

    1. Someone that talented will have to come knowing they aren't guaranteed to start.
    2. Reina would probably feel insulted by the fact that we essentially tried to replace him.

If we sign another starting caliber keeper, it's because we are getting rid of Pepe.

  22. Has not let us down shockin vs Oldham. Ok not the only one. Any way whiskey nose would have to snuff it b4 this happend.

  23. Yes. Julio Cesar anytime. Don't want any mancs. The brazillian connection in our team could make the difference.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah! But as you say he wasn't the only one and I don't like to critisize players too much when they're thrown into a team that's not the first eleven.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Even if there were a good few first teamers!

  26. Yes he does have a touch of the Djimi Traore about him. I'm all for any signing that can improve the squad but I think at the moment there are more important areas to deal with!
