'There is interest' - LFC keeping tabs on coveted €8m Super League star. Bid...?

Liverpool are reportedly one of a host of clubs monitoring 22-year old FC Basel defender Aleksandar Dragovic.

According to reports in Italy and England this week, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham, Everton and Sunderland are all keeping tabs on the Austrian international, who recently scored against Tottenham in the Europa League, helping the Basel dump the Londoners out of the competition.

Arsenal appear to be pole-position at the moment, and their chief scout Steve Rowley visited White Hart Lane to assess Dragovic in the EL quarter-final first leg.

When asked about Dragovic's future this week, Basel’s sporting director Georg Heitz told reporters:

"I know there is interest especially from England. There’s also interest from Germany, Russia and Italy – but no deal has been reached"

In 2012, €8m-rated Dragovic won the Golden Player award for 'best defender', the Swiss league's version of the Players' Player of the Year award.

If Liverpool were to sign another young central defender, then that would be arguably be a vote of no confidence in Sebastian Coates, who is a similar age to Dragovic.

He hasn't featured for Liverpool since January, and with only four appearances in the last five months, it seems clear that the Uruguayan is not in Brendan Rodgers' plans

Reds fans can run the rule over Dragovic in Basel's upcoming Europa League semi-final second leg with Chelsea.

  1. we have not got 8 million to waste on reserves we need to spend all our transfer budget on players that are going to be first teamers now

  2. It is going to e interesting who actually leaves Liverpool this year. if too many go and we need 6+ reinforcements, i think liverpool will be in transition yet again next year as players need time to bed in.

  3. No articles on selfish nature of sturridge's play from you today JK? Also no articles on the "transfer fail" that is not buying the "unplayable" sissoko? Finally no articles for a while on the lack of creativity from downing?

And for Jason Carr no moaning about Rodgers for a change?

Thought a positive article about lfc might have been timely for a change in light of what has been a tricky week for lfc?

  4. Try and understand this concept: football is a fluid sport, and nothing stays the same. Players will go through bad form and good form, and in Downing's case, he's in good form at the moment, so why would I post about his 'lack of creativity'?

Just because Downing is playing well now, doesn't mean I was wrong to criticise him when he played badly. Good form now doesn't change his bad form of the past.

Similarly, just because Sissoko was on the losing side doesn't make him a crap player. Gerrard, Lucas, Suarez et al have failed to win 21 league games this season - are they now suddenly rubbish? Of course not.

Re Sturridge: why would I write about his alleged 'selfishness' when I don't agree he's detrimentally selfish? He scored two goals and got one assist yesterday - that's a top class performance, and I've praised him for it on the site's facebook page.

I don't write 'We are amazing!' types of articles because that's not what this site is about. I prefer to focus on individual incidents/players/opinions etc. There are dozens of hero-worship sites out there - this site is about taking a critical approach to LFC, and that's what should be expected by people who come here.

  5. sturridge played well i,ve stated that but the fact is he got self centered when he was on a hatrick and completly forgot about is team mates he could and should have played the ball to coutinho on more than one occasion but kept hold of the ball looking for a chance to shoot each time straight at a defender, its a team game and the sooner he learns that the better he will be,and please i do not know who gave him motm but they watched a different game to me hendo or coutinho both shaded him imo

  6. Does anyone know if gerrard signed a new contract yet or has he still only got 15 months left? reports suggest he has not signed an extension yet. Hypothetically!!! if Suarez, carra do leave and gerrard has only got 15 months left and Chelsea bring back mourinho, 1. do you think mourinho would come in for him again and 2 do you think this time gerrard would go and 3. Hypothetically if this did happen do you think FSG would cash in??
Iknow its a massive long shot full of variables, but you never know??
