'It's demoralising' - Unhappy LFC defender hints at Anfield exit. Let him go...?

After only nine appearances in three seasons at Liverpool, Reds defender Danny Wilson went on loan to Hearts in January, and in the ten weeks since that move, he's already surpassed his entire LFC appearance total, and played in a Cup final for his new club. For whatever reason, Wilson never got a real chance with the Reds, and in an interview over the weekend, the Scot lifted the lid on his unhappiness at Liverpool since he signed in 2010.

Speaking to the Daily Record yesterday, Wilson - who cost Liverpool £2m in 2010 - revealed that he feels 'a lot happier' at Hearts because he can 'train all week and know there is an opportunity to play at the end of it'. He added:

“I wasn’t doing that at Liverpool. I was training all week, training hard, but I wasn’t really getting anywhere. Is it demoralising? Yes. You don’t enjoy it but you need to use it and make sure it doesn’t happen to you again.”

Wilson also hinted that he'll leave Anfield for good in the summer, when his contract expires:

“I’ll say more about that [leaving] another time but I’m not really focusing on it just now. People might say I made the wrong decision [to join LFC] but I made the decision at the time and I stick by that. I went down, gave it a shot and it never really happened for me."

Wilson is not bitter though, and he's keen to point out the positives of his time at Liverpool"

“These things happen, and it’s happened to better players than me. I had four top centre-halves ahead of me. I trained with top players and learned from them. I didn’t play as many games as I’d hoped but the games I played were at a good level.

Why didn't Wilson get a chance at Liverpool? Did successive LFC managers ignore him because of the stiff competition, or is it because he just wasn't good enough?

I personally don't think it's an ability issue. Wilson just had the misfortune to arrive at the wrong time; he was never going to dislodge Skrtel, Agger and Carra - all of whom were well-established in 2010 - and he must've known this before signing the deal.

In that regard, it probably was a mistake to sign for the club, and Sebastian Coates has also experienced the same issues since he arrived at the club, and in hindsight, the Uruguayan would probably also admit he made a mistake.

The good news is that Wilson is only 21, so he still has plenty of time to make his mark, and I'm sure the training and experience he received at Liverpool will stand him in good stead for the future.

  1. I'll never understand the reasons he was not granted the left-back spot. He was very reliable and promising every time I saw him play in that position, and we haven't found a permanent player on that position since then. I am not entirely sure Enrique has attained that status with Rodgers.

  2. P.S. The new Disqus system is fine. I even had issues posting comments from office with the previous system, while I do not seem to have any problem with the new one.

  4. i agree I think this system is a lot better than the old one and makes for a decent upgrade

  5. Yep, it also loads much faster for me.

  6. I don't understand it either. He was solid at Rangers and I saw him play in a few CL matches, he was unfazed and looked the part and that's a big thing for any 18 year old, let alone a defender. It would be a pity to let him go for nothing and, as our defence has been, rightly, under the spotlight this season, I think this could have been an ideal time for him to show what he could do. At least, with him being under 23, we'll get a tribunal fee for him if he moves (I think).

  7. That's good to hear guys. feedback has been positive overall, so maybe I'll stick with it.

  8. That's good news. He only cost £2m, but it would still be a significant financial loss if Wilson left for nothing.

  9. Do we really want to get rid of these young players before giving them a proper chance. Wilson, Coates should be given more chances and games to play. Let these guys get a chance to learn BR's style of play. But, sometimes, I feel that the fans demand so much from the team that the manager might think twice before putting out these young players. If they screw up in one game, its safer to put them back on the bench. See what's happened to Shelvey and Coates for that matter.

  10. let Skrtel go as well - recycle him into money and go and get Ashley Williams - already endeared himself to reds after upsetting Fergie and is already a-tuned to the way Rogers likes to play - a real leader/skipper to boot - an ideal replacement for Carra

  11. I think it was a case of changing managers and the players in his position. I feel he should haven been picked ahead of Wisdom just purely on his experience. I hope he signs an extensions ans starts playing.

    Wrong move? Maybe.

Sad though as he has quality.

  12. wilson never had a chance when rodgers took over he tried to get rid of every signing kenny made ,some were easier to get rid of than others the sad thing is the ones that managed to stay have saved his skin

  13. Danny Wilson has all the attributes to be a great left sided CB. He has had no real chance to have a run in the side. I have watched him play a lot for the reserves but he tends to look a bit vunerable on the turn and occassinally gets to tight in his marking. He also has a tendency to ping long left footed passes to the attackers which when they come off look great but if the pass does not find target he cocedes possession. He is a real hand full in the attacking area with his head. And The Rodgers way now is for footballing CB that interlinks with their deep lying midfielder. Maybe he could grow into this role. There is talk of Skrtal and Coates leaving along with Carragher. Most sides need 4 CBs. But to me Martin Kelly will be looked at in this position. We could still have Agger. And it has been hinted that Rodgers has targeted incoming CB. Also the reserves have a couple of young and talented CB on a par with Wilson so maybe his chances on reflection will be limited. Maybe we will end up losing him. But let him have a preseason with Rodgers to run the rule over him.

  17. He just wasn't good enough. No speed, no positional awareness not good enough

  18. Why let him go without playing him to see if he can step-up???, madness as he is only 21 years-old!!

  22. plus what happened to hendo...Mom and score then dropped ...Like jc said rogers is trying and failing to undermine kennys signings ...hendo downing and Enrique have been 3 of our best performers it must grate rogers

  23. Not consistent in his play, appears nervous in big matches. Still very green . But young players should be patient for their turn. The problem with this young players is that once they are given a chance to play with the seniors they think they are now permanently in the senior team and will refuse to accept a return to the reserve team. It is also BR fault for trying to make them overnight stars and later dont use them. Well lets wait and see what happens in Summer. Hope Wisdom have enougj Wisdom on what he is saying and doing.

  24. How did he try to get rid of all of the Dalglish signings? Downing, Jose, Suarez and Hendo have all been regular players this season. I wish you would make a positive comment every once in a while mate. On Topic though, Wilson looks to be a decent CB and I actually like Coates, despite his high profile errors, and it's difficult to judge a CB in their early years, as they seem to peak alot later than your wingers and forwards, I'd love to see where they are at when they are 26-27. If Coates can work on his physicality and become a pure destroyer and Wilson learns some ranged passing from Agger, they could be a fantastic left-right combo.

  25. caroll shipped out no back up downing and josie both slated in the press by him hendo tried to move on suarez untouhable or have you been in a coma ,coates constantly ignored adams got rid of ,every one of kenny signings have been moved on loaned out or publicly slated and told they can move, the differnce is the players that stayed have all proved rodgers wrong when they got there chances, and proved to be more reliable than rodgers signings

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah... So where is carroll and adams now? How good are they? Even west ham probably wont keep carroll permanently next season.. No need to said that rodgers try to get rid of all kd's signings... If you're good enough youll stay.. Its as simple as that

    ReplyDelete
  27. So what you are saying is Rodgers got the best out of Kenny's signings?

    ReplyDelete
  28. no m8 did you not watch lfc last season how unlucky were we also has rodgers had to do without lucas injured, suarez ban ,and lets not forget the 6 players he has brought in with at least half of them looking vastly overated, and over priced

    ReplyDelete
  29. what about downing .hendo and josie ,and lets not forget rodgers signings imo i would get rid of all of them with one or two exceptions

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thats what i said.. Downing and enrique has earned their place.. Maybe rodgers want to get rid of them, cause last year they were awful, especially downing n hendo.. But after they performed well, they had earned their place in starting eleven right?.. I didnt say that rodgers are perfect.. Sometimes i also want hendo to start ahead of allen.. But to said that rodgers just want to get rid of all kd's signing with no reason at all is a little bit harsh dont you think? If they are good enough n fit into the team, than theyll stay.. I guarantee you, its the same with all manager in the world
