Transfer Fail: LFC keen to sign 'Wonderful' €40m Brazilian. Future bid…?

After years of underachievement, Liverpool's youth system is finally producing quality young players on a consistent basis, and the club continues to scour the globe for the best young talent available. You can't win them all though, and Liverpool have reportedly been knocked back in an attempt to sign Brazilian youngster Rafinha.

Reports this week claim Liverpool were 'keen' on the Flamengo attacker, who 'impressed' the club's scouts with his excellent attacking displays.

Alas, the 19-year old - who has only 8 first-team appearances to his name so far - decided to snub a move to Anfield and sign a 5-year deal with the famous Brazilian club.

The new contract reportedly contains a massive £35m(€40m) release clause, which should be enough to keep the world's richest clubs at bay. For now.

In an interview earlier this week, Flamengo idol Zico criticised his old club for not moving quickly enough to secure Rafinha to a new deal. He told Esporte:

"The board moved to slowly, and Rafinha almost left Flamengo. I'm upset because people criticised him for being nominated by me. In 10 years, I've seen him do wonderful things never seen before"

After signing the new contract, Rafinha expressed his happiness with the new deal, and thanked Zico for showing faith in him over the years. He enthused:

"I am grateful for what he has done for me. Not only as a player but also as a person. He always believed in me. I'm realizing a dream of mine and also my whole family, and hopefully I'll reciprocate with wins and titles and"

It would've been great to have another attacking Brazilian at the club, but we'll just have to make do with Philippe Countinho for now. What a bind, eh? :-)

  3. Well, if we've missed out on him because he has signed a new contract at his current club, then all other European clubs have missed out on him just as much.

  4. What's your point? Not all other european clubs have been linked with him. Perhaps I should put every club of every league in the world in the headline?

  5. I really hope Coutinho turns out good. There is no reason he cant be a success like Oscar at Chelsea.
Would have been nice to add another Brazilian, but nevermind.

  11. He was born on the 1st April 1993 (April fools) .

He started his career in the youth of Guara between the ages of 6 and 16.

He has scored 2 goals for Flamengo so far.
He used to get called Neymar, because of his similar dribbling skills, and apparently has a mohawk like his too.

  12. Credit to the guy, clearly he is thinking long term, and to me that makes sense. He is still young, and so many young players ruin there carear by making the big money move too soon, then spending the next 3 seasons on the bench, or in the ressies. Playing time is vital for young players, and I`m sure him staying where he is, with his family support and friends around him, will help him to take his time to grow at the right pace, and aid his progress into become a star. Just like BR said, the big money deals for young players will come later. It is very rare to see a young player with such a level head. Ince also showed this by choosing to leave us for Blackpool, and first team football at a lower league, and it is working wonders for him too. Sometimes I feel we are all in to much of a rush to push young players through.

  17. Neymar still has a long way to go before he is ready for the 'big' stage IMO. But he has the atributes to become a top player.

True i think he'd only excel in say la lig and even then i dont think he would hit the heights of other brazillians such as Ronaldo and Ronaldinho
