'We'll let him go' - LFC eye €5.5m Xabi Alonso-loving Argentina star. Bargain...?

At present, Lucas Leiva is Liverpool's only dedicated defensive midfielder, and although the Brazilian does a great job most of the time, he doesn't really have any competition for his role, and that's something that (arguably) needs to be rectified. Joe Allen can also play in that position, but quality cover is still required, and reports suggest that Anderlecht star Lucas Biglia is on the Reds wanted list.

Multiple source report that Liverpool are monitoring Biglia, and according to TMW, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is a big fan of the Argentinian star, who will be available this summer for a bargain price of €5.5m.

Anderlecht's managing director Herman van Holsbeck confirmed the fee last week, when he told reporters:

"If we get 5.5m euros for Biglia during the next transfer window, we will be happy"

Holsbeck appears to have revised his valuation downwards since the January transfer window closed. In December 2012, he told Calciomercato:

“We have not formally received an offer for Lucas but we know that his agent is making moves in the transfer market. Biglia has two and a half years left on his contract and we'll let him go if we receive an offer of €10.25m.”

Biglia's price has dropped by €5m in just two months, which suggests the Belgian club are desperate to get rid of the player, who is also wanted by Arsenal and Southampton.

Alas, it seems that Biglia has his heart set on a move to Spain, as he told A Bola last summer:

"My cycle in Anderlecht is ending. My dream is to play in Spain. This is one of the best leagues in the world and I'm attracted to the country, given I'm already fluent in the language."

The 26-year-old midfielder expressed his admiration for one of Liverpool's most revered players:

"I like Xabi Alonso. For me, he is what gives balance to Real Madrid and Spain. He is a role model."

Worth a bid...?

  4. Not heard too much about him but you know someone who fits the young english mould that FSG loves is Jack Rodwell. Now I know he's a massive evertonian and "should" snub an offer from us but he has only played seven games this season and I'm sure he's not too happy having gone from Everton automatic to Section B Row 17 at the bridge. I've always been a fan of the lad and think he could thive with us. BR hasn't looked good in the international market so maybe he'll put in a cheeky bid on this one :) Top english talent imo

  5. Used to be a great prospect but, as far as I know, his form has dipped in recent years. At the price you state still worth a bid. At least we'd have specialist DM for back-up and you never know, maybe he'd up his game again and turn out a real bargain.

I actually agree with Jamie for once. If Lucas gets injured we're left with Allen who gets tossed around by attacking players and midfielders alike, and looks like a schoolboy at times. Allen should spend the summer lifting weights like Lucas did and built himself up if he has any chance of being a holding midfielder. But right now Liverpool need good cover for Lucas, don't know if this guy is it or not but Liverpool should be looking for the answer..

  7. Section B Row 17 at the bridge. What bridge? Thought his seat was at City of Manchester Stadium/Etihad Stadium.

  8. I would like to see Kelly back fit. He is a good cB. Rodgers should try to experiment with Kelly as DM. He is fast and has good passing ability. He has good defensive skills as well.

  9. Why not B.Rodgers try to give opportunity for Sebastian Coates and Jonjo Shelvey to playing CDM or Holding ball position??Lucas Biglia and Benat Extrebarria is will be much better players to joining LFC and good answer for this problem. But i'm worried about John Henry and FSG too stingy draw the big budget.Last season LFC have big chance to sign in Jan Vertonghen but they never do it with seriuosly.

  12. At 3m I don't think he's overrated anymore. Slightly better than Spearing, whom I'd rate at 2m (or 20m if Chelsea want him).

  13. Haha, honest mistake there. I often find it hard to differentiate teams with no history who only discover success as billionares' play things :)
