With Pepe Reina seemingly on his way out of Liverpool, the Reds are actively looking for replacements, and the latest player linked with a summer move to Anfield is Ajaccio goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
Liverpool made a £5m bid for the Mexican International during the January transfer window, and in an interview this week, the 27-year old stopper confirmed the Reds' interest. He told Orange:
"My agent had contact with Liverpool, and I hope this summer there will be some offers. There is no doubt, though, that this is a dream I have had since I came to Europe".
Ochoa - nickname 'Memo' - by the his team-mates, also claims that most of the top clubs in Europe are interested in signing him:
"It will be difficult to choose between Liverpool, Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter, Bayern, Dortmund. It depends on how everything happens, I'll then choose the best one regarding all aspects"
In January, Ochoa's agent, Jorge Berlanga, admitted there is genuine interest in his player from numerous clubs. He told So Foot:
"Many clubs are interested in Memo, and they have been watching him, but we are still at the stage of rumours"
In a recent interview, Ajaccio President Alain Orsoni confirmed that Ochoa is worth 'five or six million euros' , and revealed that several clubs had made bids for the Mexican. He told the Ligue One club's official website:
"Foreign clubs are interested in Memo, but that is normal. He's great goalkeeper and a great man. We will study bids and decide at the end of the season"
Ochoa's signed a three year deal with Ajaccio in 2011, and if he's such a 'great' goalkeeper, why are they willing to let him go only two years into the contract?
The question is, do Liverpool see him as replacement for Pepe Reina, or Doni...?

lol 4or 5 million, sell pepe for 12 to 15 nice little earner for fsg and the downgrade can continue
ReplyDeleteJust because he costs less doesnt mean he is worse. Torres £50 million, RVP £24 million.
ReplyDeleteCarroll £35 million, Sturridge £12 million.
He's a 'living legend' - if we can get him at that price it'd be a real bargain and we can all pat ourselves on the back!
ReplyDeleteHe does give a lot of rebound though....
ReplyDeleteFunny thing is i cannot see that all the clubs he mentioned are serious about him he would be at best 2nd keeper at all of them.
ReplyDeleteI would take him as a first choice keeper, I like him a lot. He isn`t the best keeper in the world, but he does what i needed, and more. He makes saves which I don`t see Reina even trying for now. Reina has been a real pro for us, but maybe the time is right for him to move on, however in my eyes he has till the end of the season to prove he is worth keeping. Personally though, dispite what he has said, I think he wants to leave.
ReplyDeleteIf we got him at that price, and sold Reina at 12mil, then I would put the 7mil left over into the new CB or DM kitty. This should boast the amount we have, and help us be able to afford going in for a top top DM or CB.
he his a back up keeper at best, and not a young one at that, and as for your reasoning of showing that cheaper players are better i could show loads the other way round
ReplyDeleteliving legend lol lets sign him
ReplyDeleteand he should be second keeper for us at best as well,or shall we just give up and get used to being a second rate club
ReplyDeleteI dont really Know him... Asked for him yesterday, if were looking for a replacement for reina I would first go for bergovic if were looking for a second keeper get a germn one pls .. Kevin Trapp my favourite (ter stegen wants to much wages and a cl team)
ReplyDeletejust out of interest jason who would you buy to replace pepe?
ReplyDeleteYes you could, but my point was, just because he is cheaper doesnt mean he isnt as good.
ReplyDeleteIm not suggesting we should buy him, I dont know anything about him, so cant really comment on his ability. Just pointing out that price doesnt necessarily transfer to actual ability.
Always great when players are discrete. Pass.
ReplyDeletei would not sell him unless he states he wants to leave
ReplyDeleteNo. If we need to replace Reina it has to be for a quality keeper. Or a young keeper that is playing well. That goes for any player in the team. I do agree that a cheaper player is not necessarily worse, but we need quality. It can be found across the board- moussa sissoko, demba ba, papiss cisse, Michu, vorm. Takes a good scouting team me thinks to find these players or the right person to think about the overall cost of a player- I.e transfer fee- wages- future sell on price etc. we've wasted far too much on average players. Fed up with it as I'm sure many are. Carroll transfer was a joke. Downing, Henderson. The fees are abhorrent and obviously not value. In my opinion. If I had my way this summer I'd be looking at :
ReplyDelete*Good competition for Reina or sell for right fee
* 2 centre backs minimum
* left and right fullbacks- to compete with Enrique and Johnson
* an athletic, powerful, tough tackling defensive midfielder
* Left and Right sided midfielders of attacking quality
* 1 creative attacking midfielder
That's minimum if we are serious about progressing. We need to cut losses for sure again, but this time on:
Carroll, Downing,Henderson, Aissaidi, Borini, Spearing,Pacheco,
Then if we get good prices on: Reina, skrtel, agger, Enrique,Johnson I'd look to see if we can replace with any quality.
Either this or we need to be purchasing better quality so that there is a bigger, more competitive squad (depth). There are quality players who would come LFC still. Suarez did. How much longer they will though is another thing..
That`s pretty much a whole new team. Generally changing that many in one go, usually means the team doesn`t click for a few seasons.
ReplyDeleteIts not fantasy football, where you sell 9 players and sign 11 in one shot.
The defense should never be completely changed in one season, as it leads to many mistakes, and therefore goals, and in turn loss`s. A new Center back is needed, esp with Carra leaving, and maybe a New Keeper, although Reina aint that bad, so not the end of the world if we keep him. The Lb and Rb`s are covered for now. Money will be tight, so I would prefer to spend more on one or two positions and get top players, than to try to buy 10 players who are all average.
It's true that changing a lot of the team is risky, especially the defence, but surely we can not be as inconsistent as the last 2 seasons?! If we get in quality, hungry players then they will step up. We have played some quality matches this season but the little things are costing us in the bigger picture. Maybe we need the summer break to re-group?
ReplyDeletePepe has done his time with Liverpool. He just does not have the drive nor the passion to play. Looking at his gaffes, He just does not try hard enough. Whenever defense makes a mistake, he does not show any form of urgency to cover goal. Notice how he is always bitching with his defenders if he deems fit. Looks like Pepe has issues with his defenders.
ReplyDeleteI could be wrong. But just my observation from games this season.
For me I feel we would be more inconsistent. The attacking end has been good, in fact since jan the best in the league, so even though you can always improve it, I would prefer the money spent on the defense not the attack, just as I don`t feel its needed as much right now. A New DM and CB and maybe Keeper and I think we will be fine, then add one top top player per season, or when needed.
ReplyDeleteThat video is old. He's cut down on the rebounds since he moved to Ajaccio and his aerial game is much improved. He's a steal even at 10 mil.
ReplyDeleteagree with most points imo this has been going on 3 seasons not just this season .we payed 6 million 4 him and would be happy if we recouped the fee as 4 figures of 10 to 15 mill people are in dream land .the man is shot .and now a very average keeper
ReplyDeleteWhat's funny is that a lot of his fans would rather he not go to Liverpool since the club is on a downward spiral. He's either going to Liverpool or Milan this summer. As for the quotes attributed to him in this interview, it is all taken out of context. He is a very well spoken individual, and I highly doubt he would say such things. One of those players that let their play in the field do that talking.
ReplyDeletejust seen the vid wow a keeper that makes saves something thats been sadly missing at anfield for 3 seasons .posted 2 years ago about signing ben foster. this fella looks a bit mad and flash ! great could be the new grob. reina has to be REPLACED
ReplyDeleteNote that Ochoa was a lot better in his youth. Its ironic because they say keepers peak when they're 30-33 but he has only declined since he burst onto the scene. He's right tho, he was being scouted by all those teams…but in 2009. Then his agent got cocky and they held out for a lot more than he was worth but nobody pony'd up and he stayed in Mexico where he has become worse with every passing season. He was Mexico's first team goalie at age 22 then lost his place to an unknown keeper. He was touted to be the next Peter Shmeichel (as you can see from his highlights) but totally botched his chance. Honestly sounds like another ploy by his agent to raise his stock now that LFC are in the market for a keeper. He's a past talent and, even worse, a waste of talent as he had the potential to be a Casillas-esc player for a top top team.
ReplyDeleteHe has always looked a quality keeper to me mate.
ReplyDeleteWell worth signing at £6mil all day long
ReplyDeleteI like him, I think he is like a warrior in between the sticks as you say he defends it like his life depends on it, qualities we need
ReplyDeleteHis agent wasn't cocky it was his damn team that wouldn't let him leave. He has regained his form out in Ligue 1.
ReplyDeleteThat's intereting because that's not what I read at the time. Having said that, those were "reports" and it could have just been media speculation. Regardless, anyone who has watched him over the last 5 years will know that he is not what he was especially in 2007. Granted he's doing much better in the french league now as you'd expect a keeper on a bad team to do (more shots on him during the game due to bad defending). But on the international scene he's still the 4th choice keeper behind Talavera, Corona, Saucedo. And imo, none of them are good enough to wear our jersey. No offense, but Mexico isn't renound to have GK talent. As a "top keeper", if he can't make it into the Mexican team at 27 when he was a regular at 22 then he's not good enough for LFC
ReplyDeletethat is a fair point
ReplyDeleteSince when is Mexico in South America?
ReplyDelete4th choice lol? His only competition is Corona. And frankly Mexico has always produced good goal keepers.
ReplyDeleteTo Europeans....There's the US and Canada.....and everything else is South America....go figure
ReplyDeleteHe's a bargain. Great upside. Hasn't reached his potential but I'm sure at Liverpool her will.
ReplyDeleteIn mexico's last 4 world cup qualifiers ochoa was one the bench for two and wasnt even named in the squad for the other two. Mexico producing good goalkeepers is new to me. Could you list off 3-5 who could have played for LFC? Im not having a go at Mexico coz they have produced some great outfielders but I honestly cant name 2 "good goalkeepers" to come out of the nation - and please dont bring Jorge Campos into the conversation. Great entertainer but there's a reason he only got as far as the MLS in his career
ReplyDeletemaybe but 1st choice
ReplyDeleteMexico is a North American country.
ReplyDeleteI would say he is on a par with Reina at present at least so i don't see why not, obviously there are better out there but unless we are prepared to spend the money they command then we can do a lot worse then this guy.
ReplyDeleteMexico's starting GK position is up for grabs. For whatever reason Mexico's current coach has a preference for Corona. He basically handed him the starting job. LOL I said good goalkeepers, never said World Class goalkeepers. Corona, Saucedo, Orozco...are all good goalkeepers, nothing more nothing less. Could they start for Liverpool? Probably not, but a decent mid table Euro team wouldn't be out of the question. As for Memo, he has the potential to be a world class gk. The EPL will whipped him into tip top shape. His career either soars or sinks at Liverpool. And I'm confident he would step up if given a chance. I wouldn't read too much into him being on the bench or not being called to WC qualifiers ( he missed them due to personal reasons). It is only a mtter of time before he gets his starting job back.
ReplyDeletei just think it will be another downgrade
ReplyDeleteLiverpool do not deserve, he needs a quality team not a team that can't stay at top of the EPL table if they are quality they should show it as of this moment it sure looks like a 2man team a 'Suarez, and Gerrard' people should stop whining about how good pool is
ReplyDelete
