Selfish Stevie? Sturridge reveals the truth about Swansea penalty

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard received huge plaudits yesterday for his apparent selflessness in allowing Daniel Sturridge to take the Reds' second penalty against Swansea, but according to Sturridge himself, the actual incident went down a lot differently to what's being reported.

When asked after the game what Gerrard said when handing over penalty duties, Sturridge - who now has five goals and one assist in his first seven games for the club - told LFC TV:

"He [Gerrard] asked Carra first, and then I asked him [to take the penalty].

"He said he was going to take it. I think he was just concerned with the more goals the better for the team.

"In the end, he let me have it, and I thank him for giving me the opportunity to score another goal"

So it transpires that Sturridge had to convince the skipper to let him take the penalty. To be honest, when the incident happened, I didn't believe for a second that Gerrard had offered the penalty to Sturridge.

Most top attacking players have an element of selfishness to their game, and the same applies to Gerrard, who probably had his eye on increasing his Premier League goals tally, and that is perfectly understandable.

Still, despite the fact it's not true, this 'selfless act' will enhance the 'Legend of Steven Gerrard', and over time, it will inevitably become fact amongst many LFC fans.

Sturridge also admitted that the team will be trying hard to get Jamie Carragher on the scoresheet before the end of the season, and the striker paid tribute to the retiring defender:

"He [Carragher] is a living legend at the club. He’s a great man the way he goes about his business, the way he trains extremely hard every day. He’s a leader on the field, and he’ll be missed when he leaves"

So far, Carra has scored fourteen goals in a Liverpool shirt; it's just a shame that eight of them were own goals scored for the opposition :-)

Carra’s roll of honour:

Dec 1998 v Tottenham
May 1999 v Tottenham
September 1999 v Man Utd
September 1999 v Man Utd
May 2006 v West Ham
November 2008 v Tottenham
December 2008 v Hull City
October 2010 v Blackburn Rovers

  1. gerrard takes the pens gerrard is the captain if he wants to offer it to carra as a token of gratitude thats up to him imo sturridge should have kept out of it nothing to do with him hes been at anfield 2 mins and hes trying to run the club what would have happened if gerrard had told him to do one

    ReplyDelete
  2. Carra told him to F off! that was hilarious.. Was in the kop begging Pepe (who apparently takes a decent penalty) or Carra to take it.

  3. Such a negative article from an LFC fanpage

  4. jaimie your headline is a bit misleading why was gerrard selfish if he was selfish he would not have offered it to carragher

  5.  you should be aware of Jaimie's love for Stevie by now :p

  6. Are we trying to create some sort of tension between our own kinship here folks coz if not, i don't see the need for such an article. Sturridge is but as stingy with the ball as any other striker in football which is well expected so why mention any pull and tug for a penalty, put it to bed man....

    ReplyDelete
  7. So what's the point of this article? are you calling Gerrard selfish or not. He takes PKs miss or not so what's the point??

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's a question, not a statement. Plus, it is selfish - Sturridge says that he asked to take it, and Gerrard said he would take it (which is saying no). Sturridge then says 'in the end', which implies he had to convince Gerrard to let him take the penalty. Given the fact LFC were 4-0 up at the time, that IMO is selfish.

It's not an attack on Gerrard anyway, so stop getting all hot under the collar. Jeez, the adulation and love fans shower on players is truly sickening. Gerrard's not your mate; he's not a member of your family, and he doesn't know you exist, yet you worship him like some kind of God, and feel the need to defend him for stuff that doesn't require a defence.

  9. Kinship? Pass me the sick bag. If you can't hack anything that doesn't massage players' egos then go to a different site.

  10. was it an opportunity missed for team mates help suarez come closer to the golden boot?

  11. why would sturridge ask to take it hes not the penalty taker, maybe your article should read selfish sturridge asks to take penalty

    ReplyDelete
  12. Just like its nothing to do with you and your stupid opinions!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lol, calm down an pull your thongs out ya bum lad. Askin for a penalty means Sturridge is 'trying to run things?' I want a player with that confidence playin for us.

  14. Making a big deal over very little in a negative way towards your 'supposed' own football team and it's players. Expect these sort of articles from the Manchester Gayzette not an apparent LFC fan site?

    Pathetic.

  15. suarez should be taking penaltys end of. and a rare thing to get a pen let alone 2. nice gesture to offer to carra, Swansea didn't turn up because they have a better thing to play for, so no disrespect to them if he did take it and miss!!!
sturridge is young and hopefully our future, so plenty of time for him, not like hes not scored a few eh !!
lets concentrate on getting this defence sorted

  16. I've had enough of this site now tbh.

    Goodbye!

  17. Come on Jaimie, you can do better than this. This is a complete non-story, like quite a lot of your pointless discussion topics. How about a discussion on what was good about the 5-0 performance, or something else a little more efficacious.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Only on this website..

  19. When you say he doesnt know you exist, well i disagree he does know us as 'FANS' of the club and of him personally and i believe he respects the fans. Worship is probably abit too far but i personally have a lot of respect for him and his achievements in a liverpool shirt and i dont believe there is anything wrong with that. I agree with other comments he offered it to Carra as we had won the game at that point and Carra has obviously just announced his retirement thats why he offered it. So imo it wasnt like he was just willy nilly to anyone and in the end he let Sturridge take it as he prob said come one youve scored one let me and as we had won the game as mentioned previously he prob just thought yeah why not and thats it. Think you read into things too much. Stevie cant be such a bad guy can he ;)

  22. I have to say I don't understand the point of this post. Disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Was it really necessary to open the article with "Selfish Stevie?"

We win 5-0 Gerrard gets us off the mark by standing up and erasing the memory of the saved pen the other night, kick-starting a goal fest to which he could have added another goal to his tally by taking that second pen but he ends up giving it to Sturridge who scores....how can that be deemed in any way selfish?

He (Gerrard) could have told Sturridge to fcuk off and then took the pen himself.... then & only then could we ask the question re Gerrard being selfish....

This is just a desperate attempt to plant a negative seed re Gerrard yet again....the other day it was a sly dig at Gerrards very big ego....like it should be accepted as a FACT....

Well, from what i can see JK, you are just projecting your own personal issue's/failings... onto a very great and talented Liverpool player, a life long servant of the Club who has captained the side continuously through the good time's and the bad, these little digs do nothing but expose your own rather inflated ego...., perhaps you are also quite selfish as well...?

I don't worship Gerrard BUT he deserves a lot more respect than this ffs......

In fact Suarez creates the majority of his own chances... You didn't think after yesterday it was downing supplying the assists did you lol

    ReplyDelete
  26. There's nothing really here to talk about... JK is right(as always)
Gerrard offered the penalty kick to carra I presume he said no, sturridge steps in and asks the captain if in his place if he could take it, Gerrard obliges...end of...

    Gerrard is Selfish!

    Next headline....

  27. I understand why you came to that conclusion. ive observed that certain type of players get labelled with "bad attitude" mainly the black ones-Cisse, Babel just to name two!

  28. "Was it an opportunity missed for team mates help suarez come closer to the golden boot?"

I was replying to the above comment, yea Suarez has his individual ability to score goals. But the players create space around him so that he can do so.

  29. Love your headlines Jamie...

'Barcelona little Argentinian gem out of contract... 2018..should we sign him?

I thought I'd throw that in while the Utd game is on...

  32. Why was it wrong for stevie to offer carra it first?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hmm you defo can't be an lfc fan. Some urchin? Try supporting the lads instead of dishing out abuse about a player that has transformed our front line. Especially abuse about something so irrelevant.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You've got to be joking. We play that well and this is the article on an lfc site that appears.!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Err....no, there is plenty to talk about actually, when a so called Liverpool fan journo is actively sniping at arguably Liverpool's best player & captain then there is an issue....

    A big issue....

Personally i do not expect to come onto a LFC forum only to read negative snipes at the Manager and Captain.., i would however expect to read this sort of drivel over at Redcafe....

& please don't tell me to go elsewhere if i don't like reading it, articles like this should be challenged.....would you prefer it if we all just bowed down and agreed with anything and everything JK writes about LFC?

Should we allow him to say what the hell he likes about whoever and not take him to task when we think he is wrong to write what he has written...?

NO, im afraid it doesn't work like that on a forum, JK would really hate such adoration and worship....

    Or would he....

    ReplyDelete
  36. There is nothing to talk about. This article is pointless. How about an article involving some detail on individual player performances in a 5-0 win rather than somehow conjuring up a negative article!

    ReplyDelete
  37. To be fair, Jason, SS doesn't mention skin colour.  And you are being pretty harsh towards Sturridge for no apparent reason.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The point is to clarify an inaccuracy, i.e. that Gerrard offered the penalty to Sturridge. That is just not true, and if people can't hack  knowing the truth of the situation then that's not my problem.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What I mean is that, if it looks like we are scoring because we need the goal, that is one thing (i.e. a striker or attacking player taking the kick)
If we are scoring and rubbing our opponents noses in it (i.e. having a non-goal scorer take the kick), then that's another story.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mitszu - Why don't you and others try and understand this concept: there are people out there - like me - who have a different opinion to you.

I was playing five a side earlier tonight, and I asked 10 non-LFC fans the following question: Your team is 4-0 up and cruising; your team gets a second penalty; the striker asks the midfielder who took the first penalty if he could take this one; he says no. Is that selfish, or fair enough?

All 10 said it was selfish. Without exception. Why? Because, unlike you, they don't have massive pro-LFC/Gerrard bias.

LFC were 4-0 up. There was absolutely no danger of losing, or even conceding a goal. Sturridge asked Gerrard if he could take the penalty. Gerrard said no. That, IMO, is selfish. Deal with it. It's not an outlandish opinion to have, and just because I'm an LFC fan doesn't mean I can't have that view.

If you don't like it, tough luck. This is the way the world works: people have different opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Carson is totally comment rubbish here i will tell you that ...  its just the normal thing that Gerald has offer it to Cara and Cara didnt take it fine and another person asked for it, also his a liverpool player so you people should stop critising anyone of them , they all done great

    ReplyDelete
  45. Gerrard should have taken the penalty.

I've heard the legendary John Giles talking about this topic many times. He was the penalty taker for Leeds, he said he took many 90th minute penalties that no other soul wanted in a million years.

Yet, when coasting 4-0, his team mates often begged him to let them have it. He, of course, turned them down.

Taking the pressure ones earns your right to take the easy ones.

Gerrard was also my captain in fantasy football #gutted

    ReplyDelete
  46. Grow up, Mitszu. Seriously. You are becoming like so many other intolerant superfans who cast aspersions against other fans just because they think differently.

There is no sniping against Gerrard or Rodgers here; you just can't hack *fair* criticism of them. And that accusation is a bit rich coming from you, with your constant barracking of certain senior players, who you argue are part of some deliberate conspiracy to destabilise the club.

You can take me to task about anything I write, as can anyone else, but when you start veering into the realms derogatory comments (so-called LFC fan; drivel etc), then it becomes a problem.

Please stick to the comment policy. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  47. P.S. I'm pretty sure LFC4lifer was being ironic.

    ReplyDelete
  48. But Jaimie, he let him take the penalty! Sturridge has publicly thanked him for it! Or is this not correct?! You say in other posts that calling gerrard selfish for this isn't a negative but then reference your conversation with your footy mates that all think gerrard is also selfish because they don't have a 'massive pro LFC/gerrard bias', implying those that disagree with you do . In what way is this not a negative?

    ReplyDelete
  49. "Sturridge asked Gerrard if he could take the penalty. Gerard said no. "

That's your basis for calling Gerrard selfish?

    Blimey.

Who took the penalty again? Oh yes , I remember it now, they were wrestling the ball from each other, then selfish Stevie decided selfishly not to pull rank or inform the new kid that he was the manager's designated penalty taker, and let him take it.

Great story. Gerard says no briefly before changing mind that quickly that no-one noticed..

Got to go, my LFC/Stevie G bias needs updating, I'm off to worship my statue of Gerrard whilst wearing my Intolerant Superfan t shirt with a picture of Suarez on the back

    ReplyDelete
  50. Jaimie, why is it alright for you to accuse mitzsu of being an 'intolerant superfans who cast aspersions against other fans just because they think differently' while you constantly dismiss people for being fawning fans who worship players blah blah when they disagree with you (as you have just done in the quote I copied)? This is now full blown hypocrisy. You claim this website is for critical realism and open to fair debate and castigate those who do not adhere to the principles however you are now the first to unfairly label those who disagree with you and either moderate, ban or openly tell those who respond to go elsewhere. Just as you have a different opinion to mitzsu (and many others) they have a different opinion to you and are not expressing it in an offensive way so what's the problem? Surely this website is pointless without this kind of debate

    ReplyDelete
  51. Actually this does happen occasionally. I've seen Premier League players Rock Paper Scissors for penalties before.

I fail to see why you have such a problem with Sturridge asking for the penalty? Gerrard had already taken one we were 4 - 0 up and Carra said no when first being offered? He is a goal scorer, a somewhat selfish and arrogant one but I think thats a good thing. We need some players like that in our team. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking to take a penalty. Especially not in this situation.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The only reason you feel like you get away with your insults directed towards other fans is that you make them generalised. In truth you do make plenty of straw men to attack and knock down, it's laughable at times these demons you create in order to give some purpose to your arguments, but there is little doubt that you are referring to people who post on this web site when you talk in VERY derogatory terms about them. You honestly think that because you refer to a "pro-benitez cult", just as an example, you can somehow suggest that by not actually naming anyone you are not being quite insulting and derogatory. You obviously think these people exist and there is no question in my mind that you include people who post on these forums as being part of these odd generalisations you make. Only by playing word games can you get away from the quite open and clear intent behind what you write. You direct insulting and derogatory language towards fellow LFC fans, very often yourself using that same phase: "so-called fan". You can go back through your own articles and see just how often you use that phrase or some kind of variation. Hiding behind the idea that it's not personal because you don't name names is nonsense. It's the abusive intent and feeling that motivates you that is relevant here, not how you can mask it or pretend that no one should find it insulting.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So if I suggested that you have a massive bias towards making yourself appear "fair" and "just" to the point where you will manipulate and twist a situation to suit that even in the face of obvious and logical alternatives ... you wouldn't consider that a derogatory statement? Is that attacking the man or the argument?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wow all these over 1 pen? Haven't you guys ever been in a similar situation playing the game? Old cap the default pen taker wants to offer the goal platter to his vice which had more own goals than goals as a gt before he retires, vice having not taken much in his entire career and thinking abt the team said 'no thanks', our new striker who maybe still have not understood how high we view Jamie and with full of confidence started thinking 'Are these 2 lacking in a little confidence? Let me take it then' and offered to take it? Stevie having already took 1 thought abt it and decided why not since Dan had done almost everything other than to score.

From my pt of view (positive maybe), i totally love all of them for this. Cap wanting to honour our Vice, vice thinking for the team and Dan willing to step up.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would simply disagree with that. I don't deliberately try to make myself appear 'fair' and just'. I just write what I think; I don't think about it and deliberately construct a point of view. This *is* my point of view.

What I write is only seen 'manipulating' and 'twisting' stuff by LFC fans, who just can't handle opinions about the club that deviate from the comfort zone of what they deem to be right.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have to point it out that you've done it again. You're referring to people who "just can't handle" something, as if they are mentally disturbed or incapable. Regardless of what you intend, the difficult fact is that people genuinely find those kinds of comments as dismissive and inflammatory. I think the issue here is not what you might intend but how people ultimately end up interpreting. Of course you don't usually need to care about how random people interpret what you write, you can't control that, but if you want them to adhere to a comments policy then it actually becomes important. If they think you're being insulting then they'll be insulting right back, and being able to justify yourself just doesn't matter to them. That's not my opinion, it's what I see happening here all the time and it's just normal human behaviour.

You are, logically, reasonably justified in the positions you take, but it's just the nature of human beings that if you use even vaguely aggressive and inflammatory language then people WILL take it personally. You might not agree, but plenty of people consider the way you put forward your arguments to be aggressive and inflammatory. While that continues to happen they will continue to respond in similar fashion in their comments, therefore not adhering to your comments policy. So I honestly think you need to decide what is more important: your desire to express yourself or your desire to set a tone for the discussion that is civilised and not personal.

    ReplyDelete
  57. You're massively overreaching in your attempt to make your point. Saying someone 'can't handle something' suggests that they're 'mentally disturbed or incapable'? Are you serious? You're projecting something onto this that just doesn't exist.

If people find that kind of comment inflammatory/insulting, then they need to get a thicker skin. If someone tells me I can't handle something, I don't take offence, and saying that is not against the comment policy.

Debate is, by it's very nature, adversarial, and aggressiveness is a matter of interpretation. Just because people are forceful in the opinions doesn't mean they're aggressive; that is a cliched misconception, and it's often used as a diversionary tactic.

If people think the way I put my arguments forward is aggressive and inflammatory, then they don't have to visit this site. I'm not going to change. I don't insult people, hurl insults and attack people personally. I may refer to fans collectively as hero worshippers etc, but that is not a personal insult.

People insult me/my family etc personally every single day, and it's almost always unprovoked. I never respond in kind, and if you think that putting forward an argument forcefully is somehow justification for people hurling insults in return, then, with all due respect, you are wrong.

When I start attacking people personally/hurling insults etc, then you can tell me that I'm being 'aggressive and inflammatory.

Civilised discussion = Discussion without insults/personal derogatory comments.

Heated discussion is still civilised discussion. People resort to personal insults because they want me to have the same views as them. They cannot tolerate someone who repeatedly thinks differently to them. They have a pre-conceived notion of what a football fan should be, and when they encounter someone who doesn't fit into their neat little box, they go on the attack. *That* is normal human behaviour.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I must have missed something but who said Gerrard offered it to Sturridge? It was obvious watching the game that Sturridge requested to take it, then Gerrard who is the designated taker and should be taking them (goal difference could matter) gave him the ball. No inaccuracy to clarify, so the post just comes across as an excuse to bitch about Gerrard for whatever reason.
I was delighted again with the performance of Sturridge but to be honest I found it disappointing to see him looking pissed off when he wasn't passed to and the way he semed reluctant to celebrate Suarez's goal. Selfish player?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I remember a few weeks ago when I put up the idea that Carra is getting an extended run in the side because he is retiring and now because Skrtel is on the out and you told me that there is no loyalty in football, so on and so forth. The fact is, in the 2 mins that you say Sturridge has been at the club, he has scored almost as many goals as Carra has in his entire career. Sturridge had every right to ask him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sturridge said Stevie offered Carra first and then he asked for it. That leads to two things, Carra said no and Sturridge asked, not demanded.

I still don't understand your attitude towards Sturridge.

    ReplyDelete
  80. it was not a pop at sturridge i just thought he was the selfish one not gerrard ,if he had goneoverand triedto persuadecarra to takeit there would not be a problem but he went overfor self motivated reasons ,as suarez evergoneand asked gerrard to takea pen ,even when hes on a hatrick or going for the golden boot,i just thought imo the whole thread was a slight pop at gerrard, when infact imo he had beenunselfish by offering it to carra in the 1st place

    ReplyDelete
  81. This article has been like watching a dog chasing his tale.Enjoyed it though.

    ReplyDelete
  82. As regards Gerrard being selfish, I think it's pretty clear that ALL great players have a selfish streak to them, so there's no real surprise there.
Suarez, has never been a penalty taker even from his Ajax days it's not part of his game at club level but he does take them for Uruguay on occasion.

I've been posting on here for a long time,as Mr Kanwar can attest to I'm not one to pick fights, but I will defend my comments.

Frankly speaking I think Jason Carr is a racist, if this post gets deleted or I'm banned or I'm called out to justify why I think that I'm more than happy to do so.
I'm happy to back up what I say with quotes and comments.

Jason if you want to get upset, indigent, angry then please go ahead.
Your comments about Sturridge asking to take a penalty and the vitriol associated are uncalled for.

Sturridge is a STRIKER and they like scoring goals,if Gerrard has offered it to Sturridge and he'd declined, I'm sure you'd have taken that as a green light to further insult him.

Carrs' comments about STURRIDGE,STERLING,JOHNSON,WISDOM in the
as being and I quote ' CRAP' 'NOT GOOD ENOUGH' 'LIABILTY' have to be taken against his comments of HENDERSON DOWNING 'NEEDING MORE TIME' 'LOOKED GREAT''NEEDING MORE GAME TIME'.
So to me Carr's not even handed in his criticism makes him biased on race.
No one likes to be accused of being racist, everyone like to think they are even handed or fair, however they rarely accept it when confronted with it.
Lucky for you Jason, I set a trap for you which Jaimie decided not to take up about the RACSIST ZENIT ST PETERSBURG fans.
Had they, abused JOHNSON,WISDOM,STERLING, ETC in the game and Jaimie had written a article I was going to wait to see if you'd come out in such strong terms as you usually do.
How you CARR thought the players should walk off or express some anti-racist comments, but alas Jaimie did not do the article.

  84. While I rarely agree with Jason and think he posts some offensive stuff clearly samsneed is inferring he's racist for a comment concerning a black player and that is bang out of order. Referencing how John Barnes was treated by other people has nothing to do with what Jason thinks about sturridge. Anyway, anyone who regularly reads his posts will know he hates joe Allen more than anyone and he's white lol

    ReplyDelete
  85. I've said this a couple of times already and you don't appear to have responded but in light of the above ill say again. Dismissing people's opinions as 'just not getting it', or 'can't handle it' (which is suggesting you're right and they're wrong), 'hero worshippers', venerating 'god like players' etc IS INSULTING! It is insulting because you are dismissing them and suggesting they either cant or are incapable of comprehending your point of view - the inference there is that there is something wrong with them for not being able to do this, that they are either ignorant or too blinded by 'pro LFC/gerrard bias'. How can it not be interpreted like that? If you are labelling someone you are making a statement about that person and there views. It's not people reading too much into it or being too precious it's you blatantly telling people they are part of this way of thinking which is clearly a negative. When you makes these comments to posters you aren't making a general reference you are telling them they are part of it. When anyone says anything you tell then to leave the website. Adam griffin is bang on with his comments and all you do is say he's reading too much into it. Well I am included in that, as are many, so please clarify what you are intending to mean when you personally label people?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Amazing, after a 5-0 win you still found something to whine about. You need to get a job or go out more.

    ReplyDelete
  87. It is no more sickening than you believing the claptrap you publish on this website is actually important and relevant. Liverpool FC don't care what you think and you are not a real journalist.

    ReplyDelete
  88. More to the point, what gives you the right to label people and pigeon hole them in these little groups you have personally created (group think, player worship, pro rafa brigade etc)? And regards your comment policy it appears to be more 'do as I say' rather than 'do as I do', you are not exactly setting an example

    ReplyDelete
  89. hasn't Sturridge come out lately saying he wants to help Suarez get the Golden Boot, wonder why he asked to take the penalty instead of suggesting Suarez should take it,,,food for thought there I think....

    ReplyDelete
  90. hey, how do you know I'm not related to Stevie??

    ReplyDelete
  91. The simple answer to the headline question is "No, Stevie was not selfish, the proof is he offered the pen to Carra in the first place." This is not the action of a selfish person, it's really feckin simple!!!! get a grip folks...

    ReplyDelete
  92. Nonsense. I can put people into groups all I like. Saying someone is part of the 'Pro-Rafa Brigade' is not an insult in the slightest. Saying fans worship players is not an insult. How could it be? Additionally, these labels are directed at abstract groups of fans, not individuals.

I do not personally insult people, that's the difference. You are just like so many others who completely twist the things I post on this site, and you are developing into a sniper. If you persist with these pointless complaints, I will delete your comments.

People constantly accuse me of being 'Anti-Suarez', or 'Anti-Benitez' and variations thereof; I don't outlaw them for doing so because such labels are not personal insults. People can say those things all day long and I don't have a problem with it. I *am* anti-Suarez, I've admitted it many times. Why would I be insulted by such a label?

Similarly, people who defend Benitez constantly *are* Pro-Benitez. How does adding the word 'brigade' make it an insult?!

I do set an example with regards to the comment policy: I ensure personal insults, personal bellittlement, derogatory comments etc are outlawed here. I strive to make this a place where people can debate about *any* football issue, not matter how unpopular it may be.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Arrogant as well, u are far from being Mr Know-it-all. Fans of ur type are a handicap for LFC, impatient and always complaining. Piling pressure on all aspects of the game...

    ReplyDelete
  94. Jaimie it is an insult if you are using these pigeon holes you make up to dismiss there comments, which you clearly are. It is obvious because of the way you say, 'you're just part of this (insert label)'. If you label
Someone and dismiss them as 'just part' of a group it is insulting. Especially when you have no idea if they are or not, or instance if someone backs rafa on here you immediately label them 'pro rafa brigade'. Is this nit intended to dismiss or undermine their comment? If not what do you mean by it and why immediately label someone it? I see you've proved the point about 'do as I say' as you are now threatening to ban me or delete my comments. Why is this considered sniping when
I am simply offering my opinion and interpretation on what you say without any abuse

    ReplyDelete
  95. But the fact is Gerrard said "Yes", doesn't matter whether Sturridge had to ask ten times, Gerrard said "Yes" simple. Jamie, what do you not understand about that concept, If Gerrard had said "No, and took it himself" I could understand your points of view, but he didn't.
Ask yourself who took the pen and that should be enough to put your whole argument to bed.

    ReplyDelete
  96. cheers m8,and i don,t hate allen i just do not rate him

    ReplyDelete
  97. It is not an insult in the slightest. *you* are suggesting I'm dismissing comments. That is not fact. It is human nature to put people/things/ideas etc into groups. If I say to someone 'you're part of the Pro-Benitez Brigade' it is not an insult, and no amount of you saying it is will change that. How can saying that someone is PRO something be undermining? That makes no sense whatsoever. It's just part of the normal banter related to football.

I haven't threatened to ban you at all; I've stated that if you persist with this ridiculous campaign to twist my approach, and make out that I'm insulting people (when I'm not), then I will delete any comments that contain such complaints.

If I genuinely personally insult someone, you have every right to call me on it. When I label someone as part of a non-offensive group, that is not an insult, and I'm not going to spend hours debating the obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Gerrard said no initially; the selfishness of that response doesn't dissipate just because he later said yes.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Jamie, don't take this the wrong way but the issue could well be that in a way you are god of your forum, You decide what gets posted, You decide how the comments policy is interpreted, You decide who gets banned for some things whilst others have more leniency shown to them, You decide what is insulting based soley on your own perception of intent, You decide whether a point is relative or not, You decide whether an analogy is pertinent or not etc etc etc the list goes on and on. The point I'm making is you are obviously biased towards your own argument just like the rest of us, the difference is you can and do use the control you have of the forum to ram home your points in an attempt to justify them. It's just an observation. Please stop tarring us all with stereotypical labels for a start, I am able to think for myself and really do find it insulting when you stereotype LFC fans as being like sheep etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  100. nice attitude Jamie, setting a really good example you are there mate....

    ReplyDelete
  101. I'm responding here because one cannot read a response to your other post below. If you do not intend to insult then that's fair enough. But you seem to be missing my point in that it is the manner in which you dismissively put these people into your 'groups' to suit your argument that can be perceived as insulting. I hope going forward you can at least see how this can be misconstrued as insulting as I am by no means the only one to feel this

    ReplyDelete
  102. God of the forum? Please, do me a favour. Of course I decide how the comment policy is interpreted, who gets banned etc. If it's not me, who else is going to do it? The same applies to every person who runs a discussion based site, does it not? A few things:

    * Leniency is shown to regular posters, I will concede that. I very rarely ban regulars. If they break the comment policy, I'll usually just edit their posts. One hit wonders who turn up spouting stuff like 'you're a c**t!' are the ones who mostly get banned.

    * I don't decide whether a point is 'relative' or not. Look around, Carl - there are almost 200,000 comments on this site, the majority of which disagree with me.

    * Yes, I'm biased towards my own argument. All football fans are the same. However, I do not Mod the comment section so that the general gist of the discussion veers towards my POV. Again, most comments disagree with me, so that's not even possible. Additionally, I don't seek validation/agreement. I prefer if people disagree as I enjoy reading opposing POVs.

    * The comment policy is exceedingly simple, but many people are just incapable of debating without getting personal. That's not my problem. Those who debate in a civil manner have absolutely nothing to worry about, and there are hundreds of posters here who never have a single post moderated.

    * People go on about freedom of speech, but if there were no comment guidelines in place, this site would just be a massive playground free-for-all, with insults being hurled left right and centre, with posters being bullied/belittled and attacked. This happens on other LFC forums, especially the official LFC forums, which IMO , are a total disgrace.

    * In my experience, many fans can be lumped together in the same category. Many fans are followers and hero-worshippers, who stick with majority view, and are defined by the group. It's groupthink on a grand scale, and it's pretty disturbing. Of course, there are many - like yourself - who do think for themselves, but fans like you are (IMO) the exception.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Jason Carr - TBH i dont overly care for his posts, but like he said if you dont like them "dont read them - simple"

But his comments are on every single thread, so its not so easy to escape his inane ramblings.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Jamie, the fact Gerrard changed his mind and let Sturridge take the pen should be the focus, that proves he was not selfish, we cannot berate him as being selfish, go back and ask your mates if someone says "No" then changes their mind a split second later and says "Yes" if that is an example of someone being selfish or not. At the end of the day Gerrard gave up the pen for Sturridge to take, which was duly dispatched, what is the real motivation for your article, can you honestly put your bias to one side and still say Gerrard was selfish? The proof is in the end result, Gerrard let Sturridge take it, yet you fail to grasp that in any form. If Gerrard had taken it, you would have a point to base and justify your argument, but he didn't, what don't you understand?

    ReplyDelete
  105. Carl, I take your points, but I feel you've misinterpreted the article. My comment about Gerrard being 'selfish' is a comment about him as a footballer not as a man.

Gerrard is a selfish footballer at times. So is Suarez; so is Sturridge; so are Rooney, RVP and most other top attacking players.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I see your points CN, and I can see how you and others may feel that being labelled as part of a group is dismissive. Some things are exceedingly self-evidence, however, and if someone continually defends players like they're untouchable deities incapable of error, then I will label them as a hero-worshipper. If that insults the person, then with all due respect, they need to develop a thicker skin.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Totally agree, maybe this should have been made clearer in the article, sometimes we have to be more pedantic in order to put our thoughts and views across, especially where there is so much room for misrepresentation, misinterpretation and we are dealing with others points of view ;)
On this occasion though I think Gerrard demonstrated a less selfish side, not sure the next person to ask his permission to take a pen will get his way though lol.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Carl - if people don't want to visit then that's fine with me. This person clearly doesn't like views that are different from his own, so the fact he's leaving is a good thing. I'd rather have tolerant fans here than those who attack others for having a different view.

    ReplyDelete
  109. 'Pro-Benitez Cult' is not an insult. It means that someone is part of group of fans who vehemently defends Benitez no matter what the issue. I seriously have to wonder: if people think that being labelled as part of the 'Pro Benitez Cult' is 'Very derogatory', I seriously question how these people function in society.

People call me 'Anti-Benitez' or 'Anti-Suarez', and even 'Anti-LFC' all the time; you don't see me foaming at the mouth over it. Why? Because they're not personal insults. If that's how people perceive me then fine. I may not agree with it, but I don't think it's insulting.

Re the use of 'so-called fan': big deal. If someone presents an idea/argument that's clearly (IMO) incompatible with supporting the club (i.e. condoning cheating), I will question whether they do , in fact, support LFC.

People question my fan status *constantly*. Every single day, I'm accused of being a 'Manc in disguise', or an impostor/someone posing as an LFC fan etc. Again, big deal. I don't take it personally. Why would I?

Abusive intent? 24 carat nonsense. It's very simple: Many fans just cannot hack views that don't conform to the group view. It's like any arena of life - the group wants everyone to think the same, and when you get one or two people who think differently, they're attacked and deemed to be traitors. The same applies in football: anyone who doesn't adhere to the group-defined concept of a fan is attacked.

My response to that is to hold the mirror up to nature, and if people don't like it, tough luck.

    ReplyDelete
  110. To be fair though Jaimie there is nothing to say the majority can't occasionally be correct. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to opinions (provided they can be factually backed up rather than baseless assertions) Perhaps it may simply be on occasion that more people agree and see things in a certain way than not, it is unfair to class this continually as 'groupthink' or 'disturbing', though it may be relevant in some circumstances. This is clouded further in the case of football/team sport because one has to consider the notion and definition of a supporter. The key here is obviously the 'support' aspect, for various reasons we have all chosen LFC as our club and invest our time, money and often emotion in it which leaves a grey area when evaluating the club and players. The problem is when people do take it too far with the fandom but I do think you are often too quick to accuse people of this

  111. he should have offered it to reina! then we would all no that hes off in the summer thank god!!!

  112. So none of Houllier, Benítez, Hodgson, Dalglish, Rodgers realized that we aren't any good at taking corners and all of them persisted with Gerrard taking them? Interesting. No wonder four out of them five got the sack so far. Have you never got the feeling that Gerrard insists on taking corners and pens?

    ReplyDelete
  113. he may stay,i thought he was good the other thursday lol

    ReplyDelete
  114. There is some truth in that. Adam's corners for us were worth 10m for Man U.

    ReplyDelete
  120. and whys it lucky for me you are a racist you think the world owes  you something i have known many ethinic friends over the years but the fact is colour as never been a issue the only time colour ever comes into it is when people like you jump on the race issue,to defend there own views there is no point trying to argue with you because all you have is the race card please feel free to provide the comments about the players what you say ive said until then shut the f"ck up,and go and find someone else to play your silly games with, you really do have achip on your shoulder

    ReplyDelete
  121. There have been claims in the past (for years) that Gerrard and Carra run the club from within/have too much power in the dressing room. While this is impossible to be proved by any of us, I can imagine this being true.

    ReplyDelete
  122. You can call me all the names and trot out the old comments about chip on shoulders, feeling attacked, you have ethnic freinds in your defence.
However it doesn't change what you've written in the past with constant particular venom shown against Black players.
As for you F*uck off comments, that shows you to be a kunt that you are.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Cannot believe this crap the article and the guy who wrote it just deserve to be ignored. I don't ever bother with these things so just boycott the clown. The worst thing he put in the article was the listing of the legend carras own goals that's a disgrace move on to another team fella.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Guys (and especially Jason). I would like to apologise as I obviously WAS implying racism, and as others have said, I don't know Jason personally, so this is unfair. So I take it back. Having said that, your comments were just ridiculously negative toward a player who has come in and been fantastic for us in most ways. To the point where they just seemed to be laced with some kind of irrational hatered or something. I just couldn't understand why a true lfc fan would spew so much venom towards one of our own (especially as he has done so well), unless you know him personaly and caught him shacked up with your missus and putting your cat in the bin or something. To me it didn't make sense, but I shouldn't have jumped to that conclusion. Each to their own anyway. All the best to everyone. Thanks to all who were trying to back me up, but I was in the wrong on this one.

  128. Really odd article, with a strange agenda to try and make Gerrard look bad.  Followed by some seriously weird comments.  This site is a vanity project for an egotist that believes his own opinion is the truth...

Gerrard is within his rights to take or offer the pen to whoever he wants.  He's earned that right.  The author has not earned the right to try and slur his name.  No one has.

If people interpreted the situation in a different way to how it went down, how is that on Gerrard?

    Grow up..
