Transfer update: BR on Coutinho & Williams. Plus Johnson/Enrique injury news

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has provided an update on Liverpool's transfer plans for the rest of the month.

In his pre-Oldham press conference today, Reporters quizzed the Liverpool coach on the club's transfer plans, and asked if the club planned to bring in any more players before the end of the transfer window.

Rodgers made it clear that the club's transfer priorities are 'for the now', not the summer, and confirmed that 'we hope to do some business between now and the end of the month'. He added:

"The owners have been brilliant, and we want to reinforce this month, and if we can bring in one or two more then that will be great.

"We still need one or two more additions, and the club is doing everything it can to assist me.

Rodgers also confirmed that 'Michael Ngoo will go out on loan, but no one else is leaving', and when asked specifically about progress on the Philippe Coutinho deal, he said:

"There's nothing whatsoever at all".

Rodgers was alo asked about speculation linking Swansea's Ashley Williams with a move to Anfield, and again, the Boss didn't give much away:

"It's all speculation, just like the many other players we're linked with. I'll only comment when a player comes in"

On Liverpool's injury status, Rodgers confirmed that Pepe Reina will miss out again this weekend, and gave the following update on Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson:

"Jose Enrique is making progress, but it's too soon for him this weekend. Johnson has a tight hamstring. It's nothing serious, but we'll assess him ahead of this weekend's game"

  1. Well then, all of the media speculations could be entirely made up. I would find it interesting to know which media outlet has the best percentage in getting their guesses right.

  2. Rodgers said the same about Sturridge before we signed him too, so I wouldn't put too much stock in what he says publicly about transfers.

  3. Remember, we can't be made out to be 'tapping up'!

  4. And any other player we've been linked with. How many would that be this January? 20? 30? Even 50? As I've said, all of the specualtion COULD be made up.

It was easy with Sturridge. Everbody knew that we'd try to get a striker in January, we had been interested in Sturridge the previous summer, but still got linked with about nine other strikers. That's a ten percent success rate.

  5. Good thing it's a cup match when we're without our two first choice full backs.

  6. Mr Rogers is growing at Liverpool, i see a bright future for this club, he is slowly building an excellent team and getting the passion back , i went to many games under dalglish and previous mangers and i now like what i am seeing, ynwa,

  7. Latest 'news' says Spurs have just had a £9.5m offer accepted for Coutinho. Well done FSG... Feet dragging does the job again.

  8. Agreed. I think this is an attempt at psychological posturing on Brendan's behalf. (I don't blame him. He must be fed up with every linked player immediately becoming a target for Southampton or Spurs!)

  9. if thats true it would not surprise me nothing will surprise me under fsg

  10. it would be nice to see this brazilian lad doing his stuff for the reds , and i do hope we get him , but im not going to allow frustration distort my positivity in the way of our team doing ok , im not to bothered about f.a. cup game v oldham , i hope we win and we sould win , im looking for the arsenal game this for me is a massive confidence building game with consistency i the making , i.d love us to sneak a win v arsenal , i think we can too , as long as we do lots of off the ball work in the game

  11. There are many talented players out there. Personally, I think if Coutinho proved himself good enough Inter milan would not be selling them. They are not after all a selling club. I think 8 mil pounds should be our maximum offer and not more. If tottenham and southampton want to splash the cash let them.
I reckon he is too much a luxury player. I'd rather stick with Suso.

  12. hope we sign coutinho looks a handful. would be gutted if he went to spurs... despise that club and he wont leave Inter for southampton

  13. That surely is true, but if Rodgers was asked about every player we got linked with in the last three or four weeks and commented on every single one, the press conferences would last an extra hour or two.

  14. I agree, lots of talent, but a lot of blind alleys too from the highlights reel I saw. We already have Assaidi for that and the front three can all interchange.

We can do without him and sign Bony instead, and maybe an enforcer DM type to provide Lucas with cover/strengthen the team against the Stokes and Evertons of this world

Then look for a genuine Sneijder type midfield player in the summer who can unlock defences in the final third. That woul make more sense to me than another dribbler.

  15. Well, then that move may work out as good for them as with the last attacking midfielder they pinched from under our nose.

  16. I think benjamin is being funny (which it is by the way.....Very!) I have not heard anything about it and trust me when I say, concerning Coutinho, I am jumping on every article, not to mention very regular updates from sky sports news. Although, if it is true, it would also not surprise me either!

    ReplyDelete
  17. May I add that it would hardly make any sense for Spurs to add another central attacking midfielder. They have just signed Dempsey, Sigurdson and agreed a deal for Holtby.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well instead of coutinho we can get some good attacking player who can give us hope that we can finish in the top 4 ..

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wouldnt surprise me mate, we do all our scouting for spurs, like jamie said, i wont be losing any sleep if the coutinho deal goes pete tong, too many pondrables for my liking, we need players like danny who can hit the ground running

    ReplyDelete
  20. like you say you don,t know if its true or false but nothing is surprising anymore after the last transfer window fiasco,it would not suprise me if suarez left at the end of the month nothing would

  21. me niether m8(if he dos,e not sign)but i do not want to hear bllshit excuses about the lack of a squad if we do not sign anyone, the squads smaller now than at the beggining of the trnsfer window

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree, I find it hilarious how short sighted some fans are, especially after the UTD game, we were playing the deadliest strike force in the league and lost and the Rodgers out chants started immediately  Then we hammer Norwich and now we're top 4 contenders. Obviously there's going to be set backs along the way and we will lose to teams we shouldn't but, in time hopefully we will iron that out!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, the squad is smaller now, but I don't think that we should sign players just for the sake of it. If no-one else comes in this January, so be it. I prefer that to overpaying on talent that may be just as talented as Downing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jovetic would be ideal for us i know theres quotes of 25m but he' the perfect player to turn us into top 4 material

    ReplyDelete
  25. That surely won't happen now. Maybe in the summer when it is clearer to see just how much money exactly we can afford to spend.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Surely the Williams rumours are just paper talk, he's 28 and I'm pretty sure FSG wouldn't allow that. If we are looking for another CB why don't we give Sama a go. Always looked solid whenever I've seen him play. I watched the reserves play a lot last season with Wisdom and Sama at Centre backs and they looked good together. But neither looked better than the other. This season one of them gets promoted to the first team and makes quite a few appearances whilst the other hasn't had a look in. It must be dis-heartening for Sama. I'm not going to say its because one is English and the other a foreigner but I really wonder why because I honestly couldn't say Wisdom was better than Sama. Just a thought.....

  27. i guess we can expect another deadline day debacle this window as Liverpool decides to make a last minute move for a player that they feel they can actually afford to bring in. I say this because from all indications From the looks of thing Liverpool is not making any head way in the negotiations for Philippe Continho. It is has become really apparent that  Liverpool can not really afford anybody of an real value these days. We had a head start in negotiations for Philippe Continho but we low balled the bid till Southampton became interested. They are desperately trying to save their season so they might not mind splashing the cash to bring in a player they believe that can help their chances at remaining in the Premiere League. Won't be surprised if this one slips out of our hands.

It is disturbing that Liverpool does not have a commanding position in this transfer negotiations other than the fact that Continho prefers a move to Liverpool over Southampton. Clearly not up to him but his club where he ends up. I think we can call the Countinho transfer a failure in few days.

  28. jaimie whats your stance on rodgers praising the swansea ball boy (saying he taught him well any manager would like him as a ballboy ect )as it was a form of cheating and we all know how much you detest it i thought you mite do a post on it also given the state of rodgers private life,he would have been better to keep his mouth shut because imo hes damaging the reputation of lfc not as much as other people but damaging it nevertheless

  29. I'm so glad someone else has said this. I've said it a few times now. How can it make any kind of sense, to anyone, to voice concerns over squad size, strength and experience and then further deplete it? The players going out may not be all that, granted. (Except Sahin, but let's move off that now) But one thing they all had was two legs and that is better than none. If we make up for it before the end of the transfer window I won't mention it again.

  30. i won,t either but i will not hold my breath lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. I honestly get what you are saying. I just want to say, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I want to be demanding success from this club. I expect them to challenge, not just for top four but the title itself. I have no desire to allow my mind to accept anything else. Football is a game so therefore fun. Professional sport is competitive and therefore the desire becomes to win. I love games but I also love to win. That is what this club is to me and I'm sure, a lot of others. I understand the politics of buisness and the financial aspects behind the running of the club. But that cannot be allowed to stop me from believing that my club also wants to win, and is there number one aim. They don't fill me with confidence at this moment in time, sorry.......

  32. You describe my opinion perfectly. They do not instil any confidence in me with their muddly transfer dealings. Spot on about we had a head start in negotiations, but this going in at very low prices and playing hardball is not always productive. It can sometimes pay to take a small initial hit for bigger gains in the long run.

  33. what is the state of Rogers personal life?

    ReplyDelete
  34. six days to go before the transfer deadline. Buck says 2 more players to come in. How come these deals are not done and dusted like DS move. Time is running out and we fans are going to be left frustrated like before. All these pussy footing around shows lack of commitment by FSG

    ReplyDelete
  35. well if you don,t know i cannot tell you as it would not get past the moderaters

    ReplyDelete
  36. What kind of answer is that?  It's not going to get moderated if it is a fact.  I don't even know vaguely what you are getting at

  37. Personally I think Jason needs to keep his mouth shut. Bringing up another debate about the ball boy incident! Pathetic!

    ReplyDelete
  38. peter you need to read a newspaper  or watch the news...theres a lot happening in the world

    ReplyDelete
  39.  why is it pathetic...theres been a lot of rhetoric about cheating so its a valid point

    ReplyDelete
  40.  i agree ...i only want to sign players who fit the bill or are better than what we have...id rather sign one great player than 6 shit ones

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hope we don't sign any sh1t players at all.

    ReplyDelete
  42. frankley i don,t give a dam what you think

    ReplyDelete
  43. No, you are not wrong. I've had the pleasure to support our club in one of our most successful times, and wish to live that experience again.

But we have to remember that we are not the only club who wants to win. And some of the other clubs can buy success by spending huge amounts of money within a very short period of time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that was never how we achieved our success, and won't do it unless we find some oil-wells at Melwood.

  44. as gilstrap has said look it up ,not saying you can blame brendon for it but imo he would be better staying away from contrerversey at the moment

  45. Andy - what is the point of this comment? You're just attacking another poster for no other reason than his opinion is different to yours. People can have whatever view they like as often as they like, so please respect that and don't target individuals.

  46. Mate, I live in Australia, in general the Premier League doesn't make the news over here.  I have had a look but cant find anything relevant, so I am going to have to live in the dark.
