'There's no point' - Ex-Red warns £6m star than LFC move could 'stunt' progress

Earlier this season, Liverpool target Thomas Ince revealed that he originally left Anfield because he didn't want to 'sign a four year deal and then not play'. Since leaving, the 20-year old has improved beyond all recognition, and with 23 goals/assists in 24 games for Blackpool so far this season, it's easy to see why the club wants him back. However, the youngster's dad, Man United legend Paul Ince, has echoed his son's comments, and he's urged Ince Jr to stay at Blackpool unless he's guaranteed regular playing time.

In an interview on Tuesday, 'The Guvnor' - who captained Liverpool during the Roy Evans era - refuted press speculation linking Ince with a move to Anfield, but warned that a move to the Premier League could potentially damage his development. He told Sky Sports:

"If you said Liverpool, or Man United or Barcelona, there's no point in him going to those clubs if he's not playing football, because that will just stunt his development. For me, he might as well stay at Blackpool and keep playing week in and week out. Where he goes, he has to have the chance to be involved and getting game time"

Speaking to the Daily Mail recently, former Blackpool Boss Ian Holloway - who also signed Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey on loan last season - shed some more light on Ince's departure from Anfield:

"What held him [Ince] back was he went to a club [Liverpool] that had an academy and there was no way through. He got fed up with that so he came and learnt his trade here.

"God knows what he could do with one of their [Liverpool's] shirts on now. He has been absolutely unplayable for us and has been outstanding in such a short period of time"

I can understand Paul Ince's concerns. Why move from Blackpool to sit on the bench at Liverpool, especially when Ince Jr's original reason for leaving was to avoid...sitting on the bench.

On Sunday, Blackpool manager Michael Appleton warned Liverpool to up their offer for Ince. He said:

"They [Liverpool] made an offer two weeks or so ago, we haven’t received anything else since. It’s not enough, it’ll need to be better to secure the service of Tom and until that changes he’ll stay here. Why would any manager want to sell and get rid of his best players? I’d love to keep Tom."

  1. Roy Evans, do you mean?

  2. To be honest the lad has to think what is better for his career. IMO although I would like him to come to Anfield I think he should stay for the rest of the season. Would he really play regularly for us? I am not so sure. Sterling is playing well and improving, Suarez is guaranteed and Sturridge too so I don't think he would dislodge any of the players. He might play a few games for us to begin with until Sturr regains full fitness.

If he wants to move she should move in the summer where he will have the chance to impress in pre-season. No doubt some of our players will leava so he might get a chance. (Although Downing has improved I still think there are much better options than his around and he is on crazy money too. Around 80K)

  3. I think the key is a part of what Holloway said "...and there was no way through.". Things obviously have changed. Now there is a way through, just ask Wisdom, Sterling, Shelvey, Suso.
While Ince surely wouldn't get as many starts with us as he does at Blackpool, he would get the first team action he didn't back when he still was with us.
I'm with FdotM on the timing of a possible move though. For Ince it might be best to finish this season with Blackpool.

  4. Morning Jaimie,
as far as I know there's still one comment I've made in reply to Jason last night awaiting your moderation. Could you tell me what's wrong with what I've said there, or if there isn't, simply let it go through, please.

  5. G'day anteater. I just checked and none of your replies are in the holding queue. It may have gone live aleady, and if it was held back initially, it would've only been because of the word filter. Do you recall what thread it was in?

  6. His stats are impressive, im just not sure what we would do with him. It sounds like he wants to play all the time, but we have Sterling to develop too, and he could be just as good if not better, and he is already at the club.
Plus I really dont like the fact that we lost him on free, and now we are thnking of buying him back for, what will probably turn out to be, more than £6 million.

  7. Sorry, Jaimie, it's been published now. The problem was that I quoted another commentator who used the word "twats".

  8. It would be great if we were able to rest Sterling a bit more often. Another promising youngster (Ince) would help us do this.

  9. Is there a way through though? Suso, Sturridge, Sterling, Ince, they can't all play and when a team starts winning, fans are not too happy about squad rotation so should that happen when Ince is out of the team, he could find himself in a sticky situation. The kid is still very young and it won't hurt him to stay at Blackpool or even to sign with whomever gets promoted from there this year and get his start in the Premiership that way. If I were his dad, I'd tell him exactly what Paul Ince did. He has time. If he's good enough, he'll make his big move eventually.

  10. I agree with you on that, I just dont get the impression that Ince would be happy to do that.

  11. Well, then he should stay in the Championship, at least for now.

  12. If I were his dad, I'd tell him that he's old enough now to make his own decisions. Your idea of signing for a promoted team is a good shout, but would they really want to sign a youngster to help them staying up, or rather a more experienced player.

  13. Worked for Wigan so far. Anyway, most promoted teams sign quite a few players. Usually a combination of older PL players who don't get regular football at their own clubs, the top performers in the league they just came from and a couple of players from abroad because they're better value for money.

  14. I agree with that totally. Funny thing is people are all talking about Zaha instead of Ince. Zaha has got to be one of the most overrated players I've seen recently and for the chairman to hint only a £20M offer can tempt them is so ridiculous.

Ince has goals and assists in him but staying with Blackpool would not hurt him. He has 18 months left so come January they will have no choice but to accept our current bid. Trouble is... Come July when the transfer window opens other teams will bid for him as it won't be expensive. I can see a Wigan or so buying him because they can guarantee him 1st team football where Liverpool can't.

I say buy him now and loan him to the struggling teams in the PL.

  15. True. I think with the upcoming Europa League as well we would need good players to help out. The trip to Zenit won't be pretty...They have a squad worthy of playing the in the PL. Can't see us getting something at theirs but sure we can nic something at Anfield.

  16. I think so too. He has time. Or go to a team where you will play. Look at Victor Moses. Work out for him.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Or even back to Blackpool with an option to recall him whenever (if you can do that?)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Indeed, but I wouldn't mind having Ince back anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  19. We might just nick it or at least get a result over there. Anzhi were nothing to be sniffed at, some really good players, and they didn't exactly beat us soundly. They currently sit above Zenit in their league. What might work in our favour is some sort of unrest in their camp with section of their fans being openly racist.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Zenit are in poor shape though. Witsel and Hulk are not making such a big difference. Actually, Kerzhakov has scored more than Hulk and he was left out of the team for a couple of weeks for disciplinary reasons. I think we have to accept that we won't be able to compete in all three competitions we have left so I would expect our strongest teams out in the league and makeshift lineups in the cups in order to give some players a rest.

    ReplyDelete
  21. well Swansea just put in a 6 million bid for him,am afraid we might miss out on such a quality player.IMO Rodgers will sign 2 more players this window.

  22. I'm curious to see how Appleton's departure helps/hinders our cause. If I had to guess I'd say it would help since Oyston seems to handle all the transfers and the new manager might just be told that he shouldn't expect to keep Ince.

    ReplyDelete
  23. How would that work in our favour?

Do you think the racism will motivate our players or demotivate theirs? I'm not having a go, I just don't understand.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No, I meant that the unrest in their camp that may be caused by those racist thugs may have a negative effect on their level of performance. I mean, if you were a black player (or any other those thugs have vilified in that open letter recently), would you still give everything if the going gets tough? It could work both way, to be honest. The concerned players could play out of their skin, too, in order to get a move to a club with more tolerant supporters.
