'El Tacuara' to Anfield? LFC to offer €10m for South American goal machine...

Liverpool's interest in Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo seems to be intensifying, and reports in Italy over the weekend suggest that the Reds are preparing to make a January bid for the Paraguayan star.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has reportedly scouted the 29-year old this season, and according to TMW, Liverpool are 'ready to offer' €10m for Cardozo, who has grabbed nine goals in his last eleven games for the Portuguese giants.

Liverpool may well be interested in Cardozo - nicknamed 'El Tacuara' - but realistically, there's arguably no way FSG will sanction €10m for a striker who will be 30 in five months; you just have to look at the Clint Dempsey fiasco to know that's true.

A loan deal seems more likely, but why would Benfica loan out their top goalscorer in this middle of the season?

With 71 goals in his last 102 games, 6'4 Cardozo's goal record is, admittedly, impressive, and if by some miracle he did come in on loan, it would be a very exciting move.

I can't see it happening though, but you never know...

  1. Oscar Cardoso is a very good striker and his record speaks for itself however his age is a problem. Fsg probably won't sanction it as you've said Jamie.

  2. I think that fsg are also learning how to run a football club and might change their attitude in some matters. Young and talented is the way to go, give your manager 100 mill is not, but proven goalscorer for 7-8 mill that could get you to cl(and the money) with 'only' couple of years to go might just be the right way to do things, especially having the young and talented already..

  3. Why would someone think that reports from Italy about a Paraguayan player at at Portuguese club probable move to England could contain any truth? If they were reports from Paraguay, Portugal or England, it would be a bit more believable, but Italy. Guess they couldn't care less about where a Paraguayan in Portugal would move unless it's Italy.

  4. You've got a point, but Italians are also mad about football, and maybe more importantly worse then gossip girls so it's no surprise they are gossiping, and unfortunately that's probably all it is, a gossip...

  5. Jamie, there is a site 'lfc live' which brings all news regarding Liverpool, your posts don't appear there any more. Don't know if you care but just in case you do...

  6. There have been too many successful non-British strikers who had success in other leagues only to come to the EPL later in their careers and fail to adjust - Shevchenko, Morientes, Crespo all come to mind. The EPL is a different beast, and the most successful foreign players (especially attacking players) have come to the EPL at young ages and adapted early.
    Pass on Cardoza.

  7. Watching Newcastle, damn it's easy to get a penalty(and a red for the defender) when you are not Suarez...

  8. too old for fsg, they wouldn't see a return. i'm ok with that way of thinking as long as they do invest.

  9. Morientes was finished anyway and the other two failed at Chelsea, a club where in the future more strikers will fail. Don't ask me why.

  10. So we should just stick to British strikers who have not found success in Britain like Carroll because they are many non British strikers like Shevchko, Morientes, Crespo failed to adjust? We have a goal scoring crisis and i don't think Liverpool fans are going to be be patient enough for Carroll to get his act together. Borini has not found his game yet . He was absent even before he was injured. Cardozo is in a rich vein of form that Carroll can only wish to achieve when he himself turns 29. They are two completely different types of players. Cordozo possess good technique on the ball , comfortable in creating his own shot in front of goal , can play with his back to goal and hold up the ball till help arrives. Carrol can head the ball well, and is good when he has no defender on him. If he does have a defender on him he is losing possession and going down. Two different types of players to be exact.

  11. Did Mourinho even want Sheva? Seemed like he was Abramovich's signing.

  12. That, of course, could well be the answer to the question I couldn't answer before. Strikers fail at Chelsea because it is not the manager who chooses some to fit his system, but the owner who just buys the best players who then won't fit into a specific system (Sheva, Crespo, Torres). Many will follow and fail until Abramovich realizes that he hasn't got a clue. Maybe he should try to get all the required coaching badges to manage the club himself.

  13. A lot of South Americans use Italian ancestry to get European passports Lucas holds an Italian passport there is said to be 25 million Brazilians have Italian ancestry. So there is a big connection with South America and Italy and why a lot of South Americans head there.

  14. Sheva, Kezman, Crespo, etc, flopped but they had Drogba, bloody Drogba, who could be relied upon. They have/had been somewhat lucky with the core group of players that came through from Ranieri's/Jose's time. The likes of Drogba, Terry, Lampard, Cole, Carvalho, Cech, etc, were there/have been there for a long time to be relied upon during the ups-n-downs at that club. Some of those might have been a obstacle for one or two managers (which was apparently one of the big factors in the AVB failure) but once their onside with the manager, their experience/quality has been massively important. That, for me, has been vital to their success and their way of trying to overcome high manager turnover. Their nucleus players. Slowly that is being eroded. There is no Drogba to save the manager from using Torres. Soon, the same could be said of Terry, Cole and Lampard.

I like Ramires and Ivanovic though, new breed (maybe not so new with Ivanovic) but have become reliable. But beyond that, question marks over defence and central midfield, and of course, up front, in terms of reliability and mentality that was drilled into those players by Mourinho.

  15. The original story actually comes from Spain and FICHAJES.NET.

  16. He is excellent, but we've all known that for years. His age makes a move seem unlikely.

I really hope we sign Shane Long

  17. Or Milevsky. I see we are being linked with him.

He is really good, a friend of mine played against him for Drogheda Utd in Champ League qualifier a few years ago rates him really highly

  18. I have made this suggestion in previous threads for the last two years and no one ever seems to notice. Thank you Jamie for finally posting this article.I think its high time FSG realise that age does not matter as long as you make a positive contribution to the team's success, as Liverpool needs a proven goalscorer Cardozo is a very very good Striker.

  19. 10 million euro is what? 8 million quid? A mere bit of change if it gets us CL qualification for the two or three years he'd be at the club for. It's not like FSG have said that they only want to sign young players. They've said they want to follow Arsenal's example and build a team mainly on players coming through the ranks. Arsenal have bought older players as well under Wenger.

  20. So, in other words, they are doomed unless they spend half a billion on new players.

  21. Then it's probably true, right.

  24. How old is Van Persie, Huntelaar and many more top strikers at that age n sold at high price ? At what age was he brought to Man Ure n at what price ? Maybe we should stick to doing a young Henderson with good resale value n did what for us ? Run tirelessly like a headless chicken. Can we get good resale value out of him or Carrol . I mean really . I think Downing who's older will fetch a better price than the young passengers. They are just of different claas to the young n talented ones like Oscar, Mata, Sturridge, Sterling etc .... At 29 n if they do the job, we get our money without having to sell them.
