Transfer fail: LFC's chances of signing 'special' €10m attacker now officially over...

Over the summer, Liverpool were repeatedly linked with a move for Barcelona starlet Cristian Tello, but it seems like the Reds' chances of signing the player may soon be officially over.

In a statement on the club's website today, Barcelona confirmed that Tello is to sign a contract extension. The statement reads:

"FC Barcelona has reached an agreement with Cristian Tello to extend his current deal with the Club until 30th June 2016.

"The release clause has been fixed at 10 million Euros. The two sides will officially seal the deal on Monday 17th December at the Club’s offices in the Camp Nou"

The new deal comes as no surprise - Barca boss Tito Villanova holds Tello in high regard, and in a recent interview, he gushed:

"Tello has never been on any list of players we wanted to move on. It was clear to us that he’d be staying with the first team. He is a player with some special characteristics, he’s young and he has to improve, but he has the ability to open up the pitch and to take a man on. There are very few players at that level".

Of course, this doesn't really rule out a move for Tello. A €10m release clause is comparatively minor, and if the Reds really wanted the youngster, I'm sure FSG could rustle up the money.

It seems a little strange that Barca would publicly announce the buy-out clause. It's not really standard practice; in fact, it's almost an invitation for clubs to come and sign him, especially with such an enticingly low fee.

  1. Downing, Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling, Cole- goal. Tika-Taka, English way!
Forgot to post this after the match...

  2. Possibly a way to ensure he doesn't go for free. I seem to remember reading something about Tello insisting on a low buy out clause in case he's left kicking his heels. Watch this space, depends on who Barca buy.

  3. Sounds more like they want to make sure they get enough cash for him should he decide to go. I think that he was told he'll be a bit part player and he said he wanted to show them that he can be a regular. Fine they said but if you want to leave next year because we turn out to be right, we want to get decent cash for you, hence the release clause. If he shows them otherwise, they'll have a great player who cost them nothing. If he doesn't, they still stand to get 10 million. A win-win for Barca imo.

  4. Has anybody seen Isaac Cuenca, I feel he would be a better choice for us. He is under the radar, 21, with Brazilian flair & tricks, and excellent technique. He can play in all 3 positions upfront and even in the hole. We could get him for the same price as Tello or even a loan with a permanent buy option.

  5. Buy-out clauses are inevitable in Spain and they have to be publicly announced. It was on his wish to set a rather low buy-out clause. It will raise though in periods. Tello is not for sale.

  7. If Liverpool really want Christain Tello I am sure we make money available that meets the player's buy out clause requirements. I don't think that FSG do not recognize the value of a player like Christain Tello. Liverpool has a problem when it comes to recognizing players who indeed posses potential. Hate to say this but i will haven't been really impressed with many of our new signings brought in by Brendan Rodgers. The brightest sparks so far were youngsters signed for the second team who have been promoted to the first team. That is saying something. If we don't get Tello which i am sure we won't we should scour the globe for a player of equal talent.

  8. Hopefully this rumour goes away now, Tello is decent, but not special.

He seems to lack composure at times

  9. And are the clauses able to exploited by non-Spanish clubs or just Spanish clubs? I know there was some ambiguity over this issue at one time but I can't recall the definitive answer on it, do you know? i.e., there is no obligation for selling club to except a bid from a foreign club, even if it meets the standard Spanish club release clause?

  10. How is this a 'transfer fail' exactly?

  11. I read somewhere that we were after him but that was last year I think? From what I've seen of him the one thing that stands out is that he's not easily bullied off the ball. Youtube highlight reels can make anyone look good but the ability to hold the ball is not something you only do in highlights. So in that respect I can see him do well in this league and be of good use for us against the likes of Stoke.

  12. This is what I was thinking; this way, as Eric has stated, they get cash for him, rather than see him leave next summer for free (do tribunals apply for overseas players?) and watch him turn out to be a world beater.
