Who's right? Fowler, Nicol, Hansen & Lawro clash over contentious €15m target...

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has warned prospective £12m (€15m) Reds signing Daniel Sturridge that he will need to improve his game if he's to be a success at Anfield.

Many Reds fans have major misgivings about Sturridge, and Fowler - who scored 183 goals for Liverpool - hailed the 23-year old Chelsea star as an 'outstanding natural talent', but urged the striker to work on certain aspects of his game. He told The Mirror:

"It seems like Sturridge will go to Anfield [and] if he does he will have to work on his team play.

"It could be really good for his game. He’s got a lot of ability, but maybe his awareness hasn’t always been the best.

"In the right environment he can develop that, and if he gets the goals Liverpool have been lacking he can have a big impact. With the right guidance you can see him getting a lot of goals.”

What do other ex-Reds think about Sturridge? In the summer, Alan Hansen made the following assessment:

"Despite his qualities, Daniel Sturridge...is a long way from being the finished article and, when all settles down at Chelsea, I cannot see him being more than a substitute at Stamford Bridge. The big thing in his favour is that he has pace in abundance and that scares defenders.”

Prior to Roberto Di Matteo's sacking, Mark Lawrenson observed:

"Roberto di Matteo needs to bring someone else in because Daniel Sturridge is not enough of a team player to be in the equation".

In an interview yesterday, Steve Nicol made it clear that he's definitely not a fan:

“Daniel Sturridge [is] a good player but [he is] not proven quality. He can’t get into the Chelsea team, so why do Liverpool think he’s going to come here and set the place alight?"

When all is said and done, Sturridge's stats at Chelsea are admittedly not that bad. Since he signed in 2009:

* Minutes played = 4236.
* Goals = 24
* Assists = 7
* Scores every 176 mins (1 goal every 1.9 games)
* Scores/creates a goal every 136 mins (1 every 1.5 games).

If Sturridge comes to LFC and scores/creates a goal ever 1.5 games,I'm sure fans will be happy with that...

  1. nobody rates him end of story fsg please not sturridge i would rather sign nobody ,than waste another 12 million on him, also jaimie after yesterdays wide spread reports that lfc have agreed fees for sturridge and ince, today blackpool are saying that the offer from lfc is miles of what they expect, seems to me that we will be going throught another dempsey saga in january were fsg make silly bids for players knowing damm well theres not a cat in hells chance that the clubs are not going to except them ,oh but at least they tried bless them, well heres my xmas message to them try f"cking harder and stop trying to thob the fans off they talk a good game but thats about it

  2. I think sturridge is a good addition to the squad. I feel that Liverpool lacked pace and sturridge brings it into the team. Also if I am not wrong those stats were made on the wing (Under AVB and when everyone seemed to think that he would become a world class player), he could be even more productive in the centre. But I thought it would be a loan signing! Permanent signing straight away seems a big risk to me. If sturridge flops I think the owner and the fans will completely lose confidence in Liverpool's transfer policy. And pray tell me, if this signing does happen, what happens to Borini and Assaidi? Hopefully BR knows what he is doing!

  3. Hooper would excite me much more as a signimg, i really hope the sturridge deal goes pete tong but reckon he,ll end up here unless another club suddenly makes a bid.

    ReplyDelete
  4. borini goes out on loan to his 110th club in the last two years we will obviously pay his wages and assaidi will probably do the same or we might sell him for 10 grand its the lfc way these days

  5. By now I actually think that we should give him a chance, as it doesn't help being in denial all of the time when it is highly likely that he will move to us. Of course I would prefer us getting him on loan first, but that seems not to be the case.

Not getting into the Chelsea team doesn't say that much to be honest. Scott Sinclair moved on and look at his development since. Glen Johnson got a few more games there, but he was never more than a squad player. Sturridge surely has to work on some aspects of his game, but there are few players out there who don't have to. If we sign him for the reported 12m, then I am pretty sure that we wouldn't lose as much money as we will on Downing and Carroll shouldn't it work out.

  6. So, how much do you think we should offer for Ince then?

    ReplyDelete
  7. its not about how much i think, its about offering deversoury amounts that they know the clubs are not going to except, basically you can try to get a hundred players but you know for a fact you will get none

    ReplyDelete
  8. so lets give another no hoper a try and soon we can have a team full of them because the few class players we have are not going to sit around waiting for champions league for ever

  9. Alan Hansen = Failure to criticize ANY of Kenny Dalglish's Signings last season VERDICT ...not a serious Pundit ...also he was glowing about Andy Carroll enough said

Mark Lawernson= Charlie Adam is a good purchase for the midfield and that Downing would be shine VERDICT> not to be taken seriously due to his weekly score predictions

Steve Nicol= Raheem Sterling is NOt ready for the first team VERDICT> A little more honest than the previous two but rarely is correct

Robbie Fowler= Honest played the game more recently has been shown in the past to be more balanced...NEVER really OOZED about Dalglish's signings ..stated that Sterling was ready BEFORE everyone else.

ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION....IS DANIEL STURRIDGE A BETTER PLAYER THAN ANDY CARROLL?

  10. Not a big fan of Sturridge I had this fantasy that my club was actually going after a world class talent to partner up front with a world class talent like Luis Suarez. When I heard it might be Sturridge i was a little disappointed I will not lie. Sturridge would bring needed pace up front and I guess that is good but I feel that he won't be as prolific enough as we need him to be. I have misgivings about relying on Daniel Sturridge. He may come in and prove me wrong and then i will gladly have to eat humble pie. I like the looks of the Frenchman called Kevin. Kevin Gameiro looks okay to me.

I am in support of Alan Hansen's and Steve Nicole's remark. I am not a supporter of Sturridge. Rather go with a Walcott if we had to sign a British striker. Walcott at 23 feels like he has been around for ever. Everybody knows his quality. Having played under "The Professor" we know he has a great team presence. He will cost more than Sturridge. This time would be one of those moments when it is actually worth it to spend heavily on British talent.

The "silly" season is about to start once again and I hope the manager gets it right. He will be forever judged by Liverpool fans everywhere if he fails to bring in a quality striker who can come in land on his feet with both guns blazing. Someone who from his first kick of the ball is making and instant impact on the team. Sort of like Suarez did in his debut under Kenny. Anyone felt Borini's impact yet while he was still fit? No duds Brendan please.

  11. After paying too much for Downing, Carroll, Henderson, Adam and so on, I find it refreshing that we actually offer what we think is the worth of a player. If you prefer us to throw silly money at everything then that's your problem. I don't think it is the way forward.

    ReplyDelete
  12. My key issue is, as Fowler states, his lack of awareness in the final third. He very much has a case of the blinkers when he's in and around that box. Very rarely looks up for the pass and won't do much of anything on the defensive side.

In my mind we need a goal scorer and a creative player. Sturridge isn't really either of those. He'd be best used as a wide attacker, which we could use but I think it's 3rd on the list. At 12m you have to think that the money could be better spent. If we had a chance at Ince then I don't see why we'd need both.

    ReplyDelete
  13. am not even going down that road with you

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agreed.

I like Sturridge, and I think if we do get him for less than about £12 million, that is a pretty good price for an English player (usually so over priced), and a January signing (also usually so over priced).

    ReplyDelete
  15. Jason,

Andy (speed of a tortoise) Carroll vs Daniel Sturridge? mmm
Andy (35 million) vs Daniel? mmmmm
    I know who'd I'd rather have.

  16. Have you read my comment, I mean, till the end? Is he really such a no hoper? If so, why did someone sign him in the first place. And how come he has actually scored a few goals in the Prem already. Wasn't Ian Rush also viewed as a no hoper when he first played for us. Who do you sign if the big names are to expensive as prices have soured due to some clubs having bottomless wallets? You always moan about everything, Jason, but do you have any viable alternatives to offer? And now don't tell me that we should get some oil-rich owners in.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I didn't expect anything else, Jason. You criticise everything, but as soon as you are asked to offer some viable solutions you don't go down that road or you simply post 'lol' instead of thinking about an alternative.

    ReplyDelete
  18. no i choose not to get in a debate with you because we have different views you think fsg are the bees knees a think there just another bunch of cowboys who have no interst whatsoever in the club apart from making money

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm waiting for someone to say that Sturridge reminds them of Ryan Babel.
The only thing they have in common is there skin colour.

HOWEVER I FELT COMPELLED TO KILL THAT THOUGHT OFF BEFORE ANYONE TYPES IT.

    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. He could turn out great for us, but another British flop would kill us... And 6-8 more mill ain't too much since it wouldn't be a gamble, Llorente i mean.

    ReplyDelete
  21. fine m8 but hes hardly going to have our competetors shaking in there boots i can see stoke, everton, and swasea being really worried not,and lets face it these are the clubs were competing with ,and i may even be being a bit unfair on everton

    ReplyDelete
  22. scored a few goals in the prem so as ngog.duiof cisse,

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why do you support LFC all you do is criticize them!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Guess FSG and BR have discarded this season already. They won't be spending heavily on players in January who can make instant impact. We might not even finish in top 10 this season.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Similar face.. Or I am racist...

    ReplyDelete
  26. So, you don't have something else to offer but a silly counter argument. Any viable alternatives, Jason, and clever suggestions, any well thought-out stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  27. If Llorente would join us we should try to get him, but rumour has it that he is about to join Juventus who are currently more successful than us, so he'd probably chose them over us.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, I know- they are after him for year now- that is why I was surprised to read we are favourites according to bookmakers...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wrong, Jason. I don't think that FSG are the bees knees and I am not happy with mid-table mediocrity (get yourself a spell-checker for Gods sake). I've put forward many arguments in the past which I am sure you read, so I won't repeat them for you now. Just a simple question for you. FSG may want to sell us on a profit one day. Do you really think they will achieve that by getting us performing worse than when they first purchased us?

So more people start to jump your band-wagon. Says a lot about them I'd say. It seems to be easier to look for the easy solution (sack manager, get new owners, sign Messi) than thinking about stuff and formulating reasonable arguments. As I've said, you moan and complain about everything, but you don't offer any solutions (bar sack manager, get new owners).

  30. The bookmakers simply want to make quick money from some Liverpool supporting folks who think dreams come true. Well, the bookmakers, too, have children to feed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This might be an interesting read for those who haven't had the chance to watch Sturridge on a regular basis:

  32. They're all right. They all say the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. without knowing what we have offered
its hard to quantify the argument...one of my main concerns with ince is i don't think he will get the game time he expects...remember he will be ousting sterling who may well feel hesthe one meriting the respect ( he is an England international deserved or not ) while ince is working his trade in a lower league...that coupled with his dad could create problems.

    ReplyDelete
  34. He was quality when he went to Bolton for the season. Just needs a run of games THROUGH THE MIDDLE and we have a potential goal machine on our hands.

One of the reasons he was so greedy at Chelsea was he's a poacher playing on the wing. Poachers are infuriating when they put the blinkers on as Suarez continually shows by putting the blinkers on 4-5 times a match.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Would be amazing to have their ex manager and ex striker shine for us, and ours floping over there...

    ReplyDelete
  36. i have every right to criticize them when they are rubbish which in case you have not noticed is about every other game at the moment,ps wish you were still manager

    ReplyDelete
  37. listen m8 please don,t think you know anything about me your getting on my wick

    ReplyDelete
  38. personally iam not bothered if he signs or not the point iam making ,the point his you can offer money noing full well it will be rejected ,then we the fans, will get the same excuses ,from fsg(we tried to sign players but they were to expensive or not value for money) so we did not bother we just pocketed the money instead

    ReplyDelete
  39. re spell checker i will go buy one i will try and buy you a sense of humour whilst iam there you can have it on me

    ReplyDelete
  40. You keep telling me what I think so it is rather you who thinks he knows something about the other one than me.

I simply have noticed that you hardly ever come up with any argumentation, any reasons behind your thinking and as soon as I ask (or some else) it's getting on your wick or you laugh out loud.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You may find a spell checker for free, but I'll gladly take the sense of humour you purchase for me.

    ReplyDelete
  42. His dad actually could be a problem, agree with that. He'll be in the lads ear all of the time anyway.

As for argument or not, I sometimes get the impression that some people simply look for reasons to bash our owners. I personally don't think they did everything right up to now, but they didn't do everything wrong. And they obviously seem to have more of a clue about business in general than the previous lot. They are our owners right now and there is precious little we can do about it. It won't help us as a club one bit right now to create negativity at every given chance.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I take it, you don't like what that guy has to say.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Which of their ex-managers?

    ReplyDelete
  45. If you can convince Falcoa or Messi to join us and fund the transfer, too, please feel free to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I like things that sounds close to reality.

    ReplyDelete
  47. bit racial don't u think

    ReplyDelete
  48. BR was their youth manager, right? And Rafa is there now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree .....i think fsg are playing a 3 card bluff a lot of the time knowing that nothing will come of there actions....the owners are a paradox though they have wasted big money on dross yet have turned there nose up solid buys

    ReplyDelete
  50. if hooper flopped he would be regarded as a no hoper bum bum a journalists dream

    ReplyDelete
  51. All right, wasn't sure what you meant so rather asked you to make it clear to me. Thanks. Yes, good idea indeed. Hope it works out right.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, at least the author of that piece doesn't depict Sturridge as an absolute world beater, but also points out his weaknesses. That's closer to a fair assessment than what we can read elsewhere at times.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Would be romantic... Imagine Sturridge scoring vs Chelsea while Torres being subbed at hour mark, and we win... Once I spent an hour explaining to my girlfriend why is it important to win vs Chelsea when Torres went blue- think that another lesson is close...

    ReplyDelete
  54. i feel surridge is a threat up front...my concern is he wants to play down the middle..thats the problem with 4 33 it really is a stifling formation without the right profile of player...if rush , shearer or a clive allen type player where at liverpool they would look terrible paying wide in the front 3

    ReplyDelete
  55. Everything is an opinion. Some opinions I agree and thus believe it as reality and vice-versa. Nothing in this world is actually a fact, everything is relative. I also think Ronaldo is better then Messi and some people just laugh off. So, I believe more often or not I have different opinions and thus different perception of what is fair and real.

    ReplyDelete
  56. That's exactly what I said about truth yesterday. It is relative.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I wouldn't mind playing Sturridge centrally with Suarez right behind him (at the expense of Gerrard).

    ReplyDelete
  58. Stranger things have happened.

    ReplyDelete
  59. She actually liked the story...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Is there some compilation of such games- video or comments?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I do get Sturridge has his bad points, and yes I would prefer Walcott. However I think Sturridge would still be a good signing for us, not my first choice, but he does get goals. He has done well for a younger lad who doesn`t get much game time. So to score that many is a very good thing. Is he Falco, nope, but he would improve us, and we could do a lot worse. It also depends on us getting a better AM. Jonjo has been our best so far this season imo, but we are still lacking that someone special to create the threat and chances for the attackers.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Good question, but I don't know the answer.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Generally I'm not a fan of English forwards.
Most English footballers are fine athletes who can motor up and down the field, but its when they get in that final third, that they're found wanting of ideas on how to score a goal.

Where they ALL fail, is in their ability at working together to craft a simple goal.
Get a group of South American, Dutch or Spanish players together, and watch them work together to pull the defense apart and score a simple tap in goal.
We don't have a clue how to do that.

Thats why Suarez tries to do eveytrhing by himself, its because the players around him don't understand how to play with him.

And thats alarming, because we've adapted a style of play where that skill is essential.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I wish these ex-LFC pundits judge our squad in the same fashion. As I suspect most fans still think Llorente et al (Huntelaar) is coming, wake up we're a mid table team lucky enough to have Saurez! Sturridge is a good buy, out scored Torres last season despite far less game time. Also represents a significant improvement from KD's buys. Plus at this present time a dash of selfishness is what we need, I'm fed up of Tika taka in the penalty area!

    ReplyDelete
  65. mike hooper would excite me if it was to replace pepe no saves reina!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. dont even think jeremy kyle could sort our club out at the moment. we need a rich ruski or arab so we stop shopping at great homer st market and start buyin at harrods. fsg do us all a favour put the club up for sale cos were goin nowwhere fast with u lot in charge

    ReplyDelete
  67. Rushy cost us about 300 grand, turned into a legend, sturridge , about 12 mil, can see him being a bellend

    ReplyDelete
  68. u talkin to a ghost!!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. yes ,i must be cracking up m8 must be all this tikka takka

    ReplyDelete
  70. its only a matter of time but you can bet your bottom dollar that they will want stupid money for the club

    ReplyDelete
  71. In case u ain't noticed Liverpool need serious criticism .always calling ourselves a top club when all our efforts have been trying to stay in midtable .remember rogers some weeks back said he will be glad if we did better than 8th . When we started winning some few games he said "top 4"..he needs hope himself...and fellas can't we swap carol for .BA. the tiki taka thing is so far embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think we are the only unsuccessful top club.lol Where no determined player wants to be. ..it's embarrassing and it keeps.getting worse.....

    ReplyDelete
  73. thats the thing if we continue to hunt mid table targets that no one else wants dont expect suarez to be here too long. And as soon as someone says to fsg the magical words 50 million he'll be sold. with the 50 million quid BR will buy darren bent/carlton cole or if wengers in a good mood then walcott!

    ReplyDelete
  74. would u really blame suarez for not trusting shelvey or downing to put the goals away? he's only here because of the loyalty the fans showed him.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Wouldn't see it that way. It happens, even to big clubs, for various reason. Look at Rangers (fourth tier now), Borussia Dortmund a few years back, Leeds, Monaco and quite a few more, all big clubs in their own respect. There comes a time when one has to sit back, analyse the situation, realise there's no quick fix (apart from throwing obscene amounts of money at the problem) and start slowly building again. Dortmund, again, is a prime example here. Young coach, young squad, took a while to get (back) to the top.
