Hamann raves: Shock CL result is an 'amazing achievement'. Better than 2007?

Last month, Celtic pulled off one of the most stunning European victories of recent times with a 2-1 Champions League victory over Barcelona. The win secured the Bhoys' passage into the knockout stages of the competition, and Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann is full of admiration for the club's achievement.

In an interview with Daily Record on Thursday, Hamann slammed his old club Manchester City's failed campaign, and raved about Celtic's victory:

"Celtic’s qualification was an amazing achievement.

"If I am honest I was delighted to see it because it is refreshing.

“I looked at my old club City’s attempts in their group and it was shambolic, so to see a team with limited resources playing in not the most competitive league go on and do well is what football is all about.”

It was definitely a magic football moment, and Liverpool target Victor Wanyama enhanced his reputation even more with a good goal and a solid overall performance.

Speaking to The Independent yesterday, Lennon admitted that he never expected to get more than a point from the game. He observed:

"I was never expecting us to win the game but I just felt if we competed, particularly at home, and with the crowd behind us, we might get something out of the game. To win the game was more than we could have bargained for, really".

Celtic's win is indeed a fantastic achievement, but (IMO) it doesn't quite match Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the 2007.

Liverpool knocked Barca out of the Champions League that season, beating Frank Rijkaard's team - which included Messi, Xavi, Ronaldinho and Deco - 2-1 at the Nou Camp.

  1. all could learn from celtic especially city, no guts no glory, quite simple, mixed with a bit of talent

  2. Celtic gave their all and respect where it's due, but in all honesty, they just got lucky with the win ...

Every team can beat any other team ... one just needa to have luck on their side and the other one has a really bad day at the office and no luck at all ...

    It happens although it's rare.

  3. Only two defeats in 24 CL home matches is not rare. Its a regular occurrence. Man, AC Milan, Shaktar, Benfica, Barca and many more have lost at Celtic Park. I expect Celtic to beat Juve at home too.

  4. i think it was better than our result, due to the fact that the whole hoops side cost less than 10m and if i'm not mistaken 6 first choice lads were missing.

  5. Thing is though, luck only came into it once when the bar was struck in that game by Messi. After that it was just incredible defending and world class goal keeping ability that Barca couldn't get to grips with. And luck was certainly against celtic when they should've claimed a point at the nou camp, the most difficult venue in the world to get anything. And luck certainly never carried them for 10 years competing at this level, just take a look at their home record in the CL to see that. One or two defeats in that time? Incredible.

  6. The Barca side in 2007 isn't a shadow of their current side. It's the best team ever assembled playing the best football ever played

  7. Celtic have European pedigree no matter the opinion of those who think they should be more humble and lie down submissively, like most clubs would have, against THE best club team (fact) in world football. All the more remarkable for a so called diddy team, well let me remind you of a philosophy..."Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not", The Celtic Way

  8. Great thought, who said that?

  9. Does anyone care i dont....freak results happen all the time its no big deal...perhaps we could post all the results of when a crappy Scottish team have beat Celtic and make a big hoohah about it

  10. funny though in that same season didn't the mighty abroath ( part timers) go to celtic and get a draw....its called selective memory

  11. Guardiola/Tito's Barca side is the best side in the last two decades at least. 2007 Barca, despite the individual talents (Messi wasn't as good as he is now), weren't as good as the current team. Add in the what another poster said about the cost of the Celtic team, I would say the 2007 win wasn't better. Was still quality 2007 Barca side but this Barca side is just something else, in terms of being a proper attacking unit.

  12. But 2007 we pushed them out of cl, vs Celtic it didn't really matter...

  13. I guess each to their own, when it comes to criteria. I was just going off the quality of the teams, rather than thinking about the possible ramifications of losing/winning in those games. This Barca side will be looked back upon as 'legendary'. That is how good they are, imo. They are a brilliant 'unit'. At least the best side since Saachi's Milan, by far. Rijkaard's Barca, at their peak, were quality but they won't be anywhere near as memorable a side as this lot will be. Like I say, each to their own, in terms of criteria of judging what the article is asking.

  14. This Barca is more lethal, but (don't kill me) boring. I saw once their possesion that went like this-
Valdes- puyol-alves- puyol- tka taka.. iniesta- messi- tka -taka- on left flank near the box and the goal out line -tika- xavi-taka- messi on the right flank(on both flanks could've crossed)- tika- taka in front of the box- back- tika- back taka VALDES-tika-taka up to the messi on the flank lost it to the goal line- no cross or shot.
    I SWEAR I'm not exagerrating!
This Barca makes opponents play like Chelsea did, and me wanting Chelsea to win...

  15. Celtic have done great this year, but in fairness to Man City, that was one heck of a group they were in. I think the seedings should place winners of their leagues so they can`t be in the same group. Having a group with four of the best leagues in europes winners in was just stupid

  16. I know what you mean, it gets boring if watched a lot. They aren't that entertaining, imo but in terms of the effectiveness, the best since Saachi's Milan team, imo. Just like I prefer to watch Ronaldinho at his (short) peak than Messi as I found the Brazilian more entertaining to watch but Messi is by far more effective, imo. This season's start by Barca has been the best in La Liga history but of course, one could possibly devalue that a little bit by arguing the lack of competition in the league.

  17. Ronaldinho- best one I've seen...

  18. Folk always want to compare one achievement to another, but both victories were special on their own merit!
Celtic's performance , not only in beating Barca but in qualifying from the group is remarkable because of the scant resources available to the club in the way of finance !
Liverpools was more of a conquest of equals in a resource sense if not a football one!
