Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he almost lost out on signing Turkish star Nuri Sahin during the summer transfer window.
In his pre-Newcastle Press Conference yesterday, Rodgers - who also indicated that he would try and sign 'two or three' strikers in January, bemoaned the sill amounts of money being spent by the top teams in the Premier League, but insisted that Liverpool still has the prestige to attract the world's top players. He observed:
"This football club and its history will always attract players. Look at Nuri Sahin as an example. He could have gone to a number of Champions League clubs and was on his way to a Champions League club [Arsenal] until the interest from ourselves arrived.
"The great support, the history of the club, drew him here. This is a club that will always draw top people and top players but we want to get it back to the top echelons of the game, which will make it much easier."
According to the Independent, Sahin passed a medical at Arsenal on the 23rd August, before ultimately signing for Liverpool.
Sahin is a good signing, but to be honest, given the choice, I would've preferred Michu for £2m. The Spaniard plays in a similar position, scores/creates goals more regularly, and would've been a permanent signing, whereas there's no guarantee that Sahin will stay at the club his loan runs out.
Jose Mourinho already hinted recently that he'll sell the midfielder to the highest bidder, and the Reds are not in the best position to challenge Europe's top clubs on the financial front.

to be honest, sahin has a much higher potential, hes technically really stong, and i think we ll sign him after the season, because he is in the progress of falling in love with lfc, so if he tells mourinho he wants to stay at anfield, he will get green lights!
ReplyDeleteMichu was an excellent signing for swansea, and we should have went for him, but i dont think you can really compare those two players
ReplyDeleteSahin is deep lying central midfielder. Michu played as secondary striker in La Liga last season. Two different players .Decent players though.
ReplyDeleteEasy decision, really. Michu for 2m for keeps or Sahin for x amount and gone after a season. Sahin is basically here to be in the shop window and/or to improve his fitness. He will come much, much more expensive. Great player, but if we have the choice to buy another midfielder for 2 or 20m, I'd go for the cheaper option and spend the rest on a striker or two.
ReplyDeleteMichu is a shit player, wait till this season finishes...he will be forgotten. Nuri Sahin is a bit of a luxury player IMO and I think he won't come to LFC permanently...he will leave to Madrid or any other CL club.
ReplyDeletehow can you say michu is shit
ReplyDeleteHe has so far performed in small teams only and in Swansea he is playing as am out and out striker and not a midfielder so he is bound to score goals. I also don't see any top skills in him apart from off the ball positioning and anticipation. If he moves to any big team, he will fail to retain such form. Also, why no big clubs were interested in him even though he was highest goal scoring midfielder in La Liga? not to forget, incredibly cheap. He is a bit of upgrade on likes of Charlie Adam...small clubs heroes...thats it..!!
ReplyDeletewell everybody's entitled to their own opinion but i have say i disagree
ReplyDeleteNo problem sir.
ReplyDeleteteam news???
ReplyDeleteSahin is more of a defensive midfielder, where as Michu is a attacking midfielder ....
ReplyDeleteSo, no point comparing them ....
I think we'll have a better idea regarding Sahin come the new year. I'd like to see him assert himself a little more; still seems to drift in and out of matches at the moment.
ReplyDeleteTBH Sahin pretty much hinted on many occasions he wanted a move to Arsenal. The only reason he came to us is that we agreed a deal that would give Real Madrid the most money.
ReplyDeleteI actually wish we had spent the money better. We pay him alot of money in an area where we are ok. We should have used the money for a striker who can actually score. Rodgers acting tough but really trying to cover up his own flaws.
"he is in the process of falling in love with lfc"?? Hahahaha! You fag! Save that poncey shit for your novella
ReplyDeleteWhy would Michu go to Liverpool when he had a chance to go to a decent club like Swansea?
ReplyDeletehaha only kidding sorry...
ReplyDeletesahin is purely here for the season and no longer.
ReplyDeleteLol nice try Mr Brent. He only went to lfc because no-one else was desperate enough to agree to Madrid's ridiculous terms. Good player though. Won't stay at liverpool though. Why on earth would he?
ReplyDeleteWho is rodgers kidding he should do less reality tv and more managing the only reason sahin came is purely financial and if he is that good then so far poole are not seeing any benefits. also its ok saying michu would have been a better aquisition but was you or anyone else shouting his name from the rooftops hmmm i doubt it very easy to be clever after the event

ReplyDelete"Look at the money being spent at the top of the table, £80 million, and teams that are trying to get into the top four like Tottenham are spending over £50m. It is a big task we have but a task we have to embrace." -Brendan Rodgers
ReplyDelete£50-80 million?!?! Brendan, please! Your crosstown rivals Everton are fourth in the premier league right now and haven't spent anywhere near that much money! Ah, but perhaps David Moyes is just a much, much better manager than you are. Yes, that must be it. You make up for your incompetencies with spending. How interesting.
Stoph people like you make my skin crawl.
ReplyDeleteSahin has no defensive qualities at all.
ReplyDeletei notice you are alot quieter about luis suarez these days. what a goal, what a player
ReplyDeleteIs that sort of response really necessary?
ReplyDeleteI love watching Sahin play. He's a technically gifted and very elegant player. He didn't become the youngest ever player for BVB for nothing, and later on their captain. Real Madrid also wouldn't have bought him if they didn't see something special in him. Pity he was injured in his first year there. I have a feeling he misses BVB and will probably go back to Germany at the end of his loan spell. Their gain, our loss.
ReplyDeleteno its not brendan its the fact that mourinho is your mate and he sorted it for you
