'Liverpool have taken a look' - LFC scouts 'assessing' coveted 53-goal striker. Bid...?

During the summer, Liverpool were regularly linked with a move for ex-Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes, a proverbial goal-machine from the lower leagues. I repeatedly called for the Reds to sign Rhodes - who is now doing well at Blackburn Rovers - but, alas, the club failed to move. with Liverpool in desperate need of at least two goalscorers in January, another prolific lower-league striker appears to be on the market, and hopefully, the Reds will not miss out this time.

According to the Daily Mail:

"Burnley's Charlie Austin has been watched by an increasing number of Premier League scouts over the past five games as they assess his ability to make the step up.

"Newcastle have a long-held interest while Liverpool, Everton, Reading and Aston Villa have also taken a look".

23-year old Austin has grabbed 20 goals and 2 assists in 17 games for Burnley this season, which makes him Europe's current top scorer. Over the last 3 seasons:

* 53 goals/6 assists in 93 games.
* 1 goal every 1.7 games
* Goal/assist every 1.5 games

Burnley signed Austin for just £1.5million in 2011, and if Liverpool went in for him, it's likely he'd be available for £2-£3

Liverpool should just go ahead and sign Austin (if he's available). For the sake of argument, if the club could get him for, say, £2.5m, surely it's a risk worth taking?

In my view, the £11m spent on Fabio Borini is a much bigger risk, and look how that's turned out so far.

Obviously, the club should also buy an established, proven, top-level striker in January, but having a promising, comparatively cheap back-up option would seem to make sense too.

I still think it was big mistake to let Rhodes go; the Scot has 6 goals and 1 assist in 12 games for Blackburn so far, which is a very good return, and like Austin, he seems to be that rarest of commodities: a genuine natural goalscorer.

Worth a bid?

  1. What makes you think either player would want to join Liverpool?

  3. i think we should consider Aubameyand from Saint Etienne or Wilfried Bony from Vitesse Arnheim, both young and hungry for goals.
    i would love to see Zaha from christal palace / Dries Mertens from PSV to.
    There should be really many players on our list, maybe also another defender, i would love to see Ogbonna because he can play leftback...
    Or another goalkeeper ? we ran out of young goal keepers, except gulacsi they are all older then 30, Ter Stegen, Butland or Steele.
    Rodgers said he has the Money to go for some players in summer, so i hope he ll sign more then just one player.
    I´m really excited and cant wait for january

  4. Yeah and you thought you'd get Rhodes for £3 mil
    You wouldn't get Austin for under £8 mil
    He's worth more than Jordan and you think you'd get him for £2.5 mil?! Haha

  5. There is absolutely no chance of Liverpool signing Wilf Zaha, and its Crystal Palace thankyou.
    Our chairman has stated on numerous occasions he will not be sold for any amount of money.
    I hope rodgers gets you sorted out and firing though, he,s a good coach and you are a great club one i have admired for many years.

  7. Reminds me a bit of Kuyt for being in the right place and general effort. If we can get him for under even £4m I wouldn't think that was too bad, we'd be paying saw-you-coming Liverpool prices of course ;)

  8. The final delivery into the box makes this guy score goals freely. we lack that edge from the flanks. but he has fantastic positioning to open up to score. he is worth more than stated for sure.

  9. In current circumstances any striker will do but i would prefer us to sign a striker who would be capable of scoring 20 goals a season in the league and i don't think this guy is capable of doing it. But as a squad player and for under 5m i won't mind us signing him.

  12. lets buy the monchengladbach goalkeeper to replace pepe,lets buy martinez from porto,buy djuricic,the young finish goalmachine and we are done.all this costs 33m at most.and we can raise this thru selling pepe(10m),stew (8m) hendo (8m) enrique ( 5m)

  13. If he is available, he would be great for us. terrific in the box, and outside. Him and Suarez exchanging places would drive opponents crazy...

  14. The problem with these lower league prolific goal scorers is that they tend to only do well int he lower leagues. Rhodes has taken a relatively small step up and his goal ratio has already significantly dropped. If we do have to get one, would rather take Austin

  15. Stew doesn't want to leave under no circumstances, neither does Hendo. Plus who would pay that much, especially for the later. And what is the point in selling only senior lb for 5 mil?

  16. Jordon Rhodes had an average of more than 1 goal per match in League 1, in Championship he is half the player he was in league 1....you take him into premiere league, he is doomed.

  21. wake up and smell the bacon this is not football manager er are not going to have a clear out in the middle of the season by letting some experienced players leave and then replace them with players that will need time to settle in the epl and the club
