In July, the Agent of Athletic Bilbao star Fernando Amorebieta confirmed that Liverpool had 'shown an interest' in signing the 6'4 defender, and now it seems that Brendan Rodgers is set to make a concrete offer for the player.
Speaking to MARCA in July, Ginés Carvaja - Amorebieta's Agent - said:
"after the excellent season he had last year, several teams have shown interest in signing him, and one of them is Liverpool, which has shown the most interest so far"
Things went quiet on the transfer front for a while, but according to reports in Italy this week, Liverpool are set to make a €15m bid for the Venezuelan international during the January transfer window.
Liverpool were linked with Amorebieta during Rafa Benitez's reign, and at the time Bilbao president Fernando Macua made it clear that the Venezuelan international was not for sale.
Amorebieta has a £26m release clause in his contract, but given the fact his current contract expires in June 2013, Bilbao will have to give him a new contract, or risk losing him for nothing in one year.
Given his contract situation, and the state of the current market, there's no way that Amorebieta would command a £26m fee, and I doubt Bilbao would be unrealistic enough to hold out for that amount.
Bilbao are currently holding talks with the defender over a new deal in a bid to fend off interest from the Reds, the Amorebieta is reportedly unimpressed with the offer on the table, and is stalling on signing a new deal.
The question is, do Liverpool need another central defender at this stage?
One word of caution: In the last three season, Amorebieta has amassed 29 yellow cards and 5 reds (!), and I doubt he'd get away with these kind of tackles in the Premier League:

ReplyDeleteWe were doing very well but lets see us go attack crazy second half - fed up of losing 1-0 or 0-0 at home - ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK - Flanagan and Coady great - Cole and HENDERSON AND Downing useless

ReplyDeletegot to feel sorry for all the lads who traveled to moscow to support a club that has no intrest in being in the comp. well i ve got news for u rodgers this is the only european footy were goin to get so get your finger out and put a team out thats good enough to get a result. cos that tonite was piss poor
ReplyDeleteIf I had 15m to spend on our squad it surely wouldn't be spent on a defender.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has been taken in again just like you were with The King. The King didnt lift a finger and got a Kings ransom on a silver platter and set us back ten years. Now the only shining lights are Rafas kids,Lucas,Skertle<Suarez and Agger. So what happens,Rodgers starts playing this dangerous type of possession football were teams are putting our defence under pressure when our defenders try to impersonate Beckenbeur or Baresi.Surely the correct way is to get results first and foremost and then when your a leading team try to incorporate more style to the wins.Mourinho,Cappello and Rafa 3 of the worlds most successful coaches, yet all criticised for their style of play yet all winners at any cost.Idiots here going along with lets play the Barca way, difference is Barca win everything year after year,we are a laughing stock and Hendo clean through wets himself and stops and pulls the ball back to no one, great manager that Brendan must really instill confidence and belief into hiws players.
ReplyDeletedont know what happened there
ReplyDeleteDidier Baptiste? You're watching too much telly, mate. I'd prefer Scooby Googy.
ReplyDeleteYour not alone in that, I'm seeing it too.
ReplyDeleteGerrard will never play in the same team as Christiano Rolldown jo

ReplyDeleteI don't understand why people can't take this defeat on the chin, Liverpool surrendered top spot but they can easily gain that back again, they play young boys at home next game, while udinese and anzhi have to battle it out. Its not the end of the world, and I'd rather have Liverpool playing competitive games till the end of the group phase, it will keep the players sharp and competitive.
ReplyDeleteyes m8 and we were linked to him by the guardian newspaper check it out what iam saying you can write what you want someone will always believe it no matter how little attempt at research there is [this is not refuring to you jaimie]so there is no need to get uptight just saying 99%of web talk is bull
