Transfer fail! Bilbao reject LFC's €12m offer for 'El Indomable'. Increase bid...?

A few months ago, the Agent of Athletic Bilbao star Fernando Amorebieta confirmed that Liverpool had 'shown an interest' in signing the Venezuelan international, and now it seems that the Reds are actively trying to acquire the 6'4 defender.

According to reports in Italy, Bilbao this week rejected Liverpool's €12m offer for the 27-year old star, and the club is now readying an improved €14m bid.

Liverpool were linked with Amorebieta during Rafa Benitez's reign, and at the time Bilbao president Fernando Macua made it clear that the player was not for sale.

Amorebieta - nicknamed 'El Indomable' (The Indomitable) by the Bilbao's fans - has a £26m release clause in his contract, but given the fact his current contract expires in June 2013, Bilbao will have to give him a new contract, or risk losing him for nothing in one year.

Bilbao are currently holding talks with the defender over a new deal in a bid to fend off interest from the Reds, the Amorebieta is reportedly unimpressed with the offer on the table, and is stalling on signing a new deal.

The question is, do Liverpool need another central defender at this stage?

If the Reds succeed in signing Amorebieta then he would undoubtedly be a great signing for the club. Defensively, the team continues to make mistakes, and perhaps genuine competition is exactly what's required at this stage?

After all, who is really challenging Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel?

  2. Believe it when we see the player on the club website signing, other outlets are not reliable!!!

  3. Player whose contract has 6 months remaining and who is not a priority right now...14mn ???

  4. if we sign him then things will be looking up because if we can spend 14 million on a defender who we are not desprete for then we can spend 30/40 million on a striker no problem lol

  5. go for him!
AND PLEASE forget about players like soldado or cavani we wont get them!

  6. Apparently Nicholas Anelka has told other clubs he wants to join Liverpool?, he could be released in China as early as next week. He hates the place and wants out ASAP, If true he could be on a free next week. Some journalists are onto this now so let's wait and see?, It comes from QPR who were trying to get him.

  7. So Italy are reporting on who an English club is signing from Spain... not sure I believe it.

Dont think we should be spending £14 million on a defender when we are in more need of a striker.

  11. We've got 4 great defenders, and enough promising subs. What we need from Bilbao is LLorente. Or Muniain.

  12. I don't think we need another defender because we already have enough quality in that area. The reason we are conceding more is because we don't have a good defensive midfielder, Lucas is quality but he will take some time now to reach that level he reached before his injury and Allen isn't strong enough to play that role to perfection.

  13. i count 2 great defenders. One is injured half of the time, skrtel isnt a really footballer in my view, hes just a defender, technically really really weak, Carrager is to old and will end his career, coates is good in most times, but causes us goals all the time he plays, i think a good defender would be great for us, what about Ogbonna ? he could also play left back ..

  14. It seems to me that conceding is more due to our midfield passing badly rather than not defending good. And if we believe BR, that segment of our play will reach perfection sooner or later. And we have to have more courage in passing forward, which will come natural when we purchase another striker, more options forward- more passes forward...

  15. Johnson is in top 5 rb in Europe, Enrique can go back to his previous form which was great(proved vs Chelsea), Agger is unbelieveble, Skrtel is perfect fit for Agger. Kelly and Robinson are England's future, and so is Wisdom if we don't burn him out. Flano is set down by injuries(so are some others), but I can see at least 2 of them in starting 11 of cl club Liverpool in 2-3 years...

  16. Two Agger like players would be too much. He wants to participate in every action- arms spread asking for the pass at least dozen times a match. that is great, but with him you need Skrtel to break a leg if needed...

  17. Johnson in the top rb in Europe? No, imo. Especially he only consistently plays well at left back, in terms of both defending and attacking. Very wishy-washy at right back. Overrated. Not even the best English right back.

If our defence was that good, we would be doing a lot better in the last few years than we have been doing.

  18. He is better defensively on lb which means it is only matter of concetration, so he can be good on rb. and I think that there are other reasons to why we were so bad last couple of seasons...

  19. And Reina was to blame for more goals than defense. And we all know he can go back to being one of top 3 in the world, so I have faith in our defense...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Been waiting 2 or 3 seasons for Reina to go back to being one of the so-called top 3 goalkeepers in the world.

  21. Not happy about it either, but it is hard to find a top keeper especially when you are a team that always wants more... We wasted our chance with Lloris...

  22. Yes, there are reasons and excuses that are possible but so is my reason for criticizing them is possible and valid. At the end of the day, as long as the team keep on failing like they have done in the last few seasons, none of these so-called 'great defenders' come out of it anywhere near flawless. To be 'great', you prove it over a substantial period. People hyping up our defenders to be on the level of some the best defenders around....based on what? a poxy Carling Cup and mediocre finishes in the league.

'it is only matter of concetration' - he has had his whole bloody career to get this so-called concentration issue sorted at right back and he still hasn't done it. So I don't hold out much hope in him suddenly turning into a reliable right back.

  23. more than it is realistic so mistakes count double here...

  24. how many 0-0 or 0-1 results? means defenders were good, but we weren't scoring. and for Johnson- I believe in him- you don't, but let's work with what we got, improve the squad on the positions we are weakest, and than those which can(and were) be good after...

  25. liverpool dont need another CB when we have agger skrtel wisdom coates carragher and kelly

  26. Doesn't necessarily mean defenders were good or at least they were the big factor, there are possibly 'other reasons' too. Football is a team game. For e.g. dominating possession or playing with two sitting midfielders can mean less work for the defence. Barca keep clean sheets at times, does that mean their defence did a good job or was it them dominating possession? See, its not clear cut. Football is not simple, to defend these defenders by pointing out to stats or results doesn't answer it fully.

I just don't rate Johnson the RB at all, for a club that wants to be in the top 4. He is simply poor defensively. Attack maybe the best form of defence for him, more than ever. Now with no workaholic Kuyt to help him, it will be interesting to see how he does this season.

But I agree I'd rather improve other areas of the team as they are more in need. So agree to disagree on Johnson being a great defender and one of the 5 best RBs in Europe.

  27. I thought we were defending well last couple of years(with single mistakes costing us points), and I do understand the concept of team game-that is why I love it... With 2 top strikers, our entire team will improve 25%

  28. Ter stegen would be my dream GK

  29. dont think rodgers likes coates or he would have played at weekend instead of a injured agger

    ReplyDelete
  30. I just think its hard two face a top-chelsea without the 2 most important defenders, i would have started agger too i think

    ReplyDelete
  31. but if there injured there injured what would have happened if agger had been put out for the rest of the season

    ReplyDelete
  32. I thought we were good defensively last season as a team and the defence was a part of that but that doesn't make them great defenders. For a team that aspires to be top 4, it was nothing great. I don't rate our first choice full backs that well. Although the expectancy is lower on Enrique I think (not sure on that, admittedly), so I'm more forgiving with him than I am with Johnson who is lauded as one of the best. But anyhoo, I'll leave it there as I am starting to get repetitive admittedly.

Just like last season, for me the problem is the goal threat from midfield and the midfield presence in the last third. We do need a striker as another option for the first XI, I don't think it is as important as rectifying the lack of goal threat from the wings and attacking midfield.

  33. put Suarez on the wing with a class player in the box and gaols are gonna start coming from everywhere...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd rather leave him there, why spoil a good thing is my motto.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Good thing leaving him there? It's the only possible thing for now, but what happens if he doesn't score one game, and he is only human(probably)? 0-0 vs Wigan? Take some pressure off of him, and he will give us back even more, goals and assists.
I think we are good enough to give Yesil 45 minutes on Saturday with Suarez on the wing to see what Yesil can do, and how would it look like to have Suarez and someone with No 9 on the back.
