Defender admits: I 'wasn't too sure' about signing for Liverpool...

England U17 defender Scott Wootton has revealed that he could've signed for Liverpool before ultimately choosing to join the club's' arch rivals Manchester United.

Wootton joined Liverpool's academy at the age of 13, and a year later, he was playing for the Reds' Under 18 side.

At 16, however, he turned down a scholarship at Anfield, which allowed Manchester United to snap him up.

In an interview yesterday, Wootton - who made his first-team debut for United last week - said:

"I was never a Liverpool fan or anything like that, and I wasn't too sure whether I was going to sign [for Liverpool].

"United invited me down for a week's trial and said they wanted to sign straight after that. It was really good"

If Wooton 'wasn't too sure' about signing for LFC then it's a good thing he left. Only players who really want to play for the Reds should be given the opportunity, and he clearly wasn't that interested.

Having said that, Wootton's reluctance to sign for Liverpool is understandable; under Rafa Benitez, academy players hardly ever made it into the first team, and if they did, they were usually discarded after a couple of games and never heard from again.

Of course, things are different now; under Brendan Rodgers, the club is clearly prioritising the development of young players, and the emergence of Suso, Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling et al is a testament to this new approach.

Check out the most memorable thing Wootton has done for Manchester United so far:

  1. He was never that good, he's now found his level. We only want players who want to be proud of the shirt. Not manure loving scum.

  2. Another needless mention for Rafa - you do know Benitez left over 2 seasons ago, Jamie. Perhaps it is time to move on, no??

But yes - good riddance to Wooton. I'll certainly not mourn the loss of any prospect who thinks they're above the shirt...

  3. I think in Rafa's defense the youth system which he was responsible for was only taking shape. It's easy for people to say Rodgers is giving the youths a chance(and credit to him for it) but we are 3 years on from his leaving and the academy is only starting to bear fruit now.

  4. What a classy and non-bitter post(!)

I'm sure you watched a 16 year old plenty and are a sound judge of youth players(!)

  6. Seriously, John - please stop with your constant twisting of my words and bitching about nothing. Where have I criticised Wootton? I even said in the article that it's understandable that he didn't sign for LFC.

Borini didn't say he didn't want to come to LFC; he said he was upset to leave Italy 'as it is my home'. Nothing to do with LFC, and I said that in the article itself.

  7. 'So are you', what? Bitter? Not at all. One can question the bitterness of a post, without being bitter, which is what I did. A somewhat childish reposte, 'so are you'. 'So are you', what? Good judge of young players? Nope, I dare not judge conclusively young players at that age, I leave that to people like the guys that offered Wootton the scholarship in the first place at Liverpool.

  11. jaimie read your own post i shall quote you if wooten was not that bothered about playing for lfc then its best he didnt join only players who really want to play for the reds should be given that oppotunaty in that case its best he didnt join ? all i stated is borini said he wanted to stay in italy so he did not really want to play for lfc you cannot critisise one young player and not the other they both basically said the same only difference is one signed for us one didnt thats my opinion

  13. Fergie wooed wooton to his grave. He's finished. Just want to make a point. How many manure players left without a fallout with Friggerson?

  14. What a embarrassing post, in terms of how petty and childish people can be over the smallest of things, in the name of rivalry. Embarrassing.
