'We've had bids' - Boss confirms offers for 'extraordinary' £20m wing target. LFC?

The ridiculously inflated prices for British footballers just keep on coming! Yesterday, it emerged that Chelsea want £20m for Daniel Sturridge, and now, Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish has slapped an improbable £20m price tag on Liverpool and Arsenal target Wilfred Zaha.

In an interview today, Parish described Zaha as an 'extraordinary talent', adding:

"I said at the start of the season that keeping hold of Wilf would be like spending a lot of money on a transfer.

"Other sides can fly their kites but it would take £20m before we even got interested".

£20m for a 19-year old who has never played in the Premier League? Totally ridiculous, and it will never happen. Indeed, I doubt Zaha is too impressed to see Palace basically pricing him out of a dream move to one of England's top clubs.

Liverpool were linked with a move for Zaha in the January 2012 transfer window, and in a recent interview, Palace Manager Dougie Freedman raved about Zaha's 'huge potential' and 'wonderful technique', but also admitted that it will be hard to hold onto the youngster.

Despite Parish's unrealistic transfer bravado, he recently admitted that the club may have no choice but to sell. He admitted:

"I guess for a club like Palace, everyone's got a price. It's a horrible thing to say in a way because we'd love to see a team succeed with the youth of the area at the heart of the team. Fingers crossed, we don't get a big offer for Wilfried or Jonny [Williams] that we're forced to consider"

  1. That price will just be to put people off. He would never go for that much, unless Liverpool buy him ;-)

  2. When LFC paid 20mil or about for SD benchmark pricing was set. We pay for our follies.

  3. 5 Million would be right for him, not more! We could get theo wallcott for less than 20million ;)

  5. Read the whole of Parish’s statement. He said Palace would be in line to receive around £60m if we win promotion, so we’d have to be compensated for massively reducing our chances of going up. Especially there's still 4.5 years left on his contract. In time Zaha will prove himself, but agree that no Championship player is worth that much.

Having said that, if Liverpool are prepared to spend around £75m on Carroll, Downing and Henderson, £20m for Zaha sounds like a bargain.

  6. Yawn. "Zaha's dream move?" Yeah he must hate playing in the championship week in week out, when he could go to a prem side and sit on the bench/play in the under 21 league (vs Palace under 21s!)

Maybe the best thing for the 19 year old is another year/18months at palace, get another 40-80 games under his belt and then, if Palace aren't mixing it with the big boys, move on.

How do you value him at £5m when Ox-Chamberlin went for £15m and he only played in league one?

He's not worth £20m by any stretch but if you were the chairman would you be pitching him high or low? Exactly.

  7. Its only Palace fans who know how good he is. The truth is we don't want to sell him, he makes going to selhurst Park exhilarating and we really don't need the money. When we do we'll let you know in the mean time you'll have to wait i'm afraid or offer us money we can't refuse i'e 20M.
p.s he's far better than the players you have wasted 20M+ on.

  8. Lol awful article. He is absolutely worth £20m or more to Crystal Palace as he could be the difference between them being promoted or not and as we know that's worth much more than £20m. I got a ring for my 21st birthday that is worth £'000's to me but would I expect anyone to pay that? Of course not

And 'pricing himself out of a dream move to Liverpool' what an arrogant idiot! Stay and play regular football and improve then one day move on to a top side, or go to the graveyard of English footballers and consistently finish 7th in the prem? I know what I'd rather do!

Oh and to the Walcott comment above, Zaha already looks a lot more effective than Walcott

  10. It's always assumed by the Media and big clubs that the player that plays for the smaller club should move as soon as a big club comes knocking. Very Rarely do they think that the players development may be better aidded by staying with their respective club for the short term. Zaha is only 19 and seems to be quite happy at Palace at the moment. All Steve Parish is trying to do is retain the services of the player and if not inflate the price after all what is the point of letting your prized asset go on the cheap like DerBaummann suggest for 5 million. DerBaumman if you had watched you would realise with his rate of development in comparison to Theo Walcott he has the potential to be twice the player of Walcott and that 5 million would be to considerably undervalue his true worth.

  12. This january B.Rodgers will be give budget for only uk 24milion.If we used 20milion for only 1 striker,it is no brainer plan.British players as Daniel Sturrigde,Theo Wallcott will never come with cheaper price. With high demand salary,no point to get players easy to get injured.Maybe Demba Ba with 7milion + Fernando Torres 15milion = 22milion.Extra more 2 milion.
