'Punish him!' - Stoke boss slams 'embarrassing' Luis Suarez dive...

Stoke Manager Tony Pulis has slammed Liverpool striker Luis Suarez for his 'embarrassing' dive during the Reds 0-0 draw with Stoke City earlier today.

In his post-match press conference, Pulis could barely hide his frustration over the Uruguayan's antics. He raged:

"Retrospective decisions are made on a Monday and Luis Suarez should be punished.

"The one in the penalty box was an embarrassment and how he wasn't booked I don't know."

I have to agree with Pulis here: Suarez's dive was embarrassing:

Pulis added:

"I am concerned about the simulation and putting pressure on the ref. It's a tough enough job as it is. For professional footballers to be doing that is just not right and the PFA should start talking about it"

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers took the easy way out and insisted that he hadn't seen the incident:

"I haven't seen the incident so I can't really comment on it, but whatever Luis does there will always be a problem, whether it's media, referees or whatever".

Suarez was hacked down all afternoon by Stoke's thuggish defenders, and at one point, Robert Huth deliberately stamped on the Uruguayan's chest (!); however, that's still no excuse for diving, and Suarez deserves all the vitriol that will inevitably come his way over this new incident.

Having said that, if Suarez is to be subject to retrospective action then the same should apply to Huth, who deliberately assaulted Suarez, and could've caused him serious injury.

  2. Lineup looks quite good. I'm happy with this being our strongest 11. Good mix of youth and experience. Hopefully we can iron out some of the defensive mistakes we have been regularly making this seasons. Interesting fact, Wisdom is apparently our fastest player according to the EA sports performance index. He's been clocked at 21 mph..

  3. If Downing was dumped by BR than good. Liverpool didn't spend 20mill for him to talk to the press but to play football. Good riddance I say. Common Liverpool. YNWA.

  5. Jaimie surprised you havn`t wrote an article on downings reply to BR`s public critism. I agree with him 100 percent and question our managers man management skills. It seems he creeps to the senior players to keep his job yet picks on the touchables publically.

  7. If you listen to what rodgers siad he never said anything wrong he said that downing has to be more brave and show that he deserves to ware the shirt which so far he hasn't done

Fastest player out of the last match anyway.

  9. well if u listened to everything he has said about downing you will realise he has publically slated him as a winger on excessive wage previous. it is obvious he wants to off load him. he is not motivating the player. why was he making downings wage previous public? then says hell play left back and still plays him on the wing. look up what br has said about downing and realise he is out of order. maybe this was the last straw for downing hence the reply.

    ReplyDelete
  10. bottom line though downing needs to go

  11. When your not playing regularly. Criticising the manager isnt the smartest thing you can do. He should take a look at himself and the reasons he isnt being picked. After his effort thursday he should have pushed on and kept shut. Maybe hes happy picking his wages up. Im really dissapointed and expected more from him. He was never going to set the world alight. But he was the most consistent crosser in his position before arriving. What happened? If he cant handle the pressure he should go.

    ReplyDelete
  12. probably however while hes here hes a red and should be treated with the respect he deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  13. each time he is slated his price goes down further.....not a smart move really.

  14. No Morgan again. what does the kid have to do. certainly better than Borini

  15. Stewart Downing is not good enough for the 1st 11.
That's what Brendan Rogers is effectively saying in Public.
Stewart Downing would have been told this in private and was probably told that he would not get much first team football IN PRIVATE.
We have seen his displays and they are not good enough.
We've been saying and everyone else knows it this is not a secret.
Brendan Rogers is very very clear NO EGO'S NO REPUTATIONS ETC.
You fight for the place or your out of contention.

If anyone thinks that Kenny's Man Management was any good only needs to look at the attitude of the players last season.

I'm sticking with Rogers no more Kenny or Rafa win lose or draw.
I like the style of football I like his approach.
He's young and will only get better as a Manager/Coach.

  16. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY ROGERS IS BRING ON JOE COLE?

HAS HE LOST HIS MIND ?

    ReplyDelete
  17. If this is the case then please explain why downing has said that he should of been told in private. Fact is I wouldn`t blame Carol if he didn`t want to come back in January. I just wonder the number of players who will want to be playing for him and not the club ifwe don`t start winning soon.
Everyone wants the best for downing but some people just think of other motives.

and for the record I think its BR with the ego if I add up other comments ive heard from him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hes our manager i will support him when he is right. Style of football, slow, defensive, lazy and predictable but looks good to the eye. Its huff and puff but can`t blow the the house down. More defensive than last season and less chances on goal.
As a plus Suarez seems more focused and the youths are playing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. MMM yes I saw Carol get his chance to fight for his place .....lol

  20. 1 Private or public the truth is he's not good enough Roger's know's and the fans know it.
2 Rogers doesn't want Carroll back in Jan and is looking elsewhere
3 Roger's is making it difficult for Down for a reason.
Downing isn't young he's a supposed to be a senior player and looks nothing like his supposed reputation.

Any decent Manager has a ego ..purple nose, mournhio, don't for a minute think that any manager or player doesn't believe they are good.
Admit it you don't like Rogers and pine for the Kenny Days or where he was boring, obtuse, wasted money tactically inept and ascorbic.

    Kenny is not coming back.

  21. because rogers thinks goal scorers are an unnecessary luxury.
gawd is he a younger Hodgson

  22. Ill admit I would of wanted a manager not set in a part narrow minded system but one who has the experience to assess players and choose a team to their strengths. Someone who could of evolved last seasons squad and not one minute say the quality is there when he came and then a month later say the quality isn`t there.
Ok so downing goes for 5 mil instead of ten who gains. When your winning as a manager you can get away with it but when your losing or drawing at home then questions have to be asked by all liverpool and non liverpool fans and to now say its work in progress is laughable and no excuse forresults so far my friend. Whether I like BR or not is not important. What is important is that the team wins and we move up the table.
    End of...

  25. We are not in the Euros next season after this performance. We can't win at Anfield against teams like Stoke. I hope its one off as Stoke's defense was mean today and we can start scoring again from the next match. It highly seems unlikely though. Hope LFC get some luck too, we have started counting for hitting post again this season. Suarez does everything and plays from Striker to Midfield to Wing....he didn't have much of assist today, only time he had a chance, he created it himself. Suarez is brilliant just let him stay upfront and feed the ball to him otherwise he tends to come in the midfield/wing way too much to create chance for himself. Bad luck once again. YNWA

  27. spurs new manager, new system and better results ......
Dawson was to be off loaded yet he wasn`t slated neither were others in public. No body wants their wage known in public it is disrespectful and personal. Yes BR has his reasons but it could be wrong ones in my opinion..

    ReplyDelete
  28. 18 shots...2 on the net and Suarez hits the woodwork again. 0-0 vs Stoke at home means only one thing. Assuming everybody wants to win, I must conclude we're not good enough to win. It's going to be a long season. Top 4 doesn't look possible. I'm patient...we're rebuilding...but it's going to be a long season.

    ReplyDelete
  29. just rubbish. when will people realise we need a forward who stays on the last defender who can win a header and maybe score?? ie carroll.
just clueless from rodgers, regardless of the pretty football on display

    ReplyDelete
  30. common sense mate

    ReplyDelete
  31. BR reasons are that he's not prepared to massage Downings Ego from a player that has yet to score or assist in the premier league for Liverpool.
Tottenham have a Manager who made terrible mistakes at Chelsea and is hanging on to his reputation and inherited a decent squad.
    Dalglish left BR rubbish purchases.

Disrespectful is stating finally that your going to fight for your place which Downing did.
He should have done in the first place, but as Dalglish said about Downing 'He's better than I thought' what does that say?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Rodgers is clueless, no plan B and hitting high balls into Stokes box is food and drink for them. Never was a fan of Rodgers from day one and not changed my mind so far

    ReplyDelete
  33. Stoke drew against City and Arsenal as well, but at Britannia if am not wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Stoke are probably the hardest team anyone faces all season, they kick the you know what out of you and if your not up to the battle then you wont come away with a win. They are going to finish between 10th and 14th like they do most seasons, annoy the shit out of managers like Wenger and Mancini and they dont give a toss what you think about them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If you knew yr footy you wouldn`t say that. Fact stoke have a very good home record against teams but average away from home to say the least. No excuses.

    ReplyDelete
  36. im beginning to think rogers is a hypocrite .....he shipped carol out because he doesn't want to play the long ball ...yet that's all we do ....gerrard consistently hits hollywood balls and im sick of it...i honestly think carroll would thrive as we are always pumping high balls in the box ..i counted at least 10 then i stopped counting

    ReplyDelete
  37. well ourmanager has certainly massaged jainie carraghers ego since hes been here. said shelvy and sterling will go on loan....

by the way downing said he will continue to fight for his position. big difference, i think there has been worse players this season.

you keep on believing with all the evidence in front of you.

even roy hodgson can change a system with england and still win with 3 days training of players he doesnt manage

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sad thing about Downing is that no hindsight was needed to realise that he epitomises mediocrity or was it a coincident that Hodgson dropped him for the Ox.

At 28 y/o Downing has absolutely no reason to lack confidence-he has prem experience (atleast 5-6yrs), over 20 England caps, the crowd don't boo him. Please contrast this with Sterling & Assaidi's premiership/international career!
What Rogers did was absolutely correct, in that he made sure a player who HIDES from any resposnsibility is made fully aware that has a senior player he has no right to do so!

This typifies LFC the past 10yrs- we complained that Ryan Babel was not good enough, he was slated (unfairly) yet who do we have instead, Downing!

  39. he'll dive when he wants, he'll dive when he wantsssssssss, o luis suarez, he'll dive when he wants!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  40. That is hilarious. Really doesn't help himself, Suarez.

On the stamp, I hope Huth gets done, that is a absolute disgrace.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i totally agree with him, suarez is a bad diver. I love LFC, the club the Tradition, i think i might be you biggest Austrian fan ;) , and i also like Luis. He isnt that bad guy everybody talks of, im sure about this, but his dives are terrible. Its a shame he cant play fair, a shame for our club. I know hes technically stong and not the biggest and strongest guy. Its absolutely logical he would get down before a Fellaini/Toure or our Skrtel would, but his actions is what i call to overdo. If you do it 1 - 3 times a season its okay, but he does it every second game. Im a great fan of Suarez his style of play, but today i didnt see anything positive from him..
Yeah he should have deserve 3 Penaltys in the Last 6 Games, but dont forget he dived about 3 times to. So its really simple, why shall you give him a penalty if he dives every single time?
I didnt get the sense of our style today. If anyone has watched Lissabon vs Barca AND our game today, think of both and compare. did you ever see puyol or mascerano shooting a high ball from behind to lionel messi ? i didnt, so why the fuck are Agger and Skrtel doeing that all the time. Especially if your opponents Centre Mids are 2 Turrets that are even bigger than Carroll. ALso: the passing game, we have no cenfidence are stressed, barca is cool if they play. Our gamestyle isnt the same, if we really try to play Tiki Taka, why dont we do it? its not just our players are worse than barcas players. i mean its senseless to compare messi with suarez Xavi with allen or iniesta with joe Cole. THe thing is everybody talks about this short passing game, i cant see much more short passes than long crosses. Who the fuck told skrtel hes the guy that crosses all the time from behind? Rodgers? So then i ll start to be against him from now. Skrtel is the worst footballer we have in our team, i mean hes a giant in defence and he did pretty good in defending crouch, hes a really unplayeable defender, but thats all.
Im not diassapointet with the result, if stoke plays a 4 5 1 (aka 9 0 1) its hard to score (Barca managed that against Benfica and they played pretty defensive too) but im dissapointet at the point of our style. this wasnt tiki taka rodgers.!!!
AND a last thing.. POOR Borini. DId anyone see him sitting on the bench at minute 90´ when the FA guy took his shield, on wich they showed that its 4 minutes extra time? Did anyone see him? he was so dissapointed. Ok he didnt have his Impact now, but he could have been a supersub, defineately better than joe Cole....

I would wonder now, playing just crosses but loaning out carroll? playing tiki taka with high balls from behind? Dropping Borini but letting Joe Cole play? Dont tell Suarez to stop to dive all the time?

By the way my man of the match was Wisdom!! Perfect performance, i was really impressed.!!!!

    Sorry for my bad english
    Best wishes from Austria

suarez just aint helping himself, and letting his team mates down especially the ones who have just came out and defended him.
his diving is so bad, its not even sly or has any timing to it.
he needs to practice, makes drogba look good.

    ReplyDelete
  44. so what ....its a relevant comment when we are supposedly not playing this style

    ReplyDelete
  45. also what is the point of playing high balls up field when out front three are tiny and there back 4 are huge...that is just dumb...dumb by the players dumb by the manager ....ps carroll is twice the player borini is and i dont really rate carroll ..but he would flourish with gerrard high lump it up balls

  48. Oh no Babel was at best shiiitee. He was given chances, messed up nearly every time. It summed it up for him vs Luton and they were in 2nd div at the time and going into addmin, and he was up against a donkey right back, and he didn't beat him once. And this is the same babel who has just had his contract cancel d at Hoffinhiem

    ReplyDelete
  49. Just to pick up on the Drogba mention... When he first came to the EPL he quite swiftly gained a reputation for diving - something he admitted during a post match interview - but after a few seasons he lost that from his game and later ended up leaving Chelsea and English football with a good reputation.

So everyone shouting about what a disgrace Suarez is - I personally haven't seen him give anything other than 100% commitment on the pitch and that includes the dive to try and get us something! - lets just see what happen with him given time.

I can't believe LFC fans are giving him such a scathing hard time!!! He's one of our players, we don't have to condone his actions (and I don't believe he dives at every opportunity like this frenzy is whipped up to indicate), but we also shouldn't attack him as much as some LFC fans are.

I'm sure if I had access to every game we've played over the last 3 or 4 seasons I could show you at least as many dives in an LFC shirt from Gerrard, should we all attack him aswell??

Suarez shouldn't do it, just as any player shouldn't do it, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of players do it. LFC fans foaming at the mouth about it when one of our own players does it is not going to change it. It's not disgraceful FFS, intentionally stamping on a player is disgraceful, diving is just unfortunately part of the game at the moment. Hopefully that will change but I honestly don't see that happening too soon.

Just as a last comment... If I, or any of us, had stamped on someones chest in front of 40-odd thousand witnesses we would be in court charged with assault or worse. I hope Huth get a retrospective red at the very least.

    ReplyDelete
  50. PS. Drogba was a deep sea diver and he could have represented Ivory Coast in the swimming competition during the olympics. Same goes for ashley cole. I wish Suarez watches his game today, that dive was embarassing!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Is this the same Pulis who shrugged off Crouchs handball the other week as 'its nice to get one over the big teams'. He is an absolute hypocrite of a man. Diving is bad for the game. But so are these hypocritical managers who turn a blind eye when its there players commiting the offence. What a complete waste of space he is.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I thought it was funny too. I think he tried not to go down, then thought "fnck it" and just belly-flopped. Sometimes when you get shat on in life there comes a point where you just give people what they want.
Can't really blame him, as him and Sterling had the shit kicked out of them all afternoon......

I honestly thought Stoke would have a go for a change today, as we aren't the force we have been. Oh no, silly me, our weakest side for years and they still came for a point.
All Hail Pulis and his anti-football.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The dive was manna for Pulis, because it helped him deflect the blame from some of the "brave", "heroic" and "spirited" performances of his players.
    Complete gobsh!te.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Suarez should leave England asap. The discrimination and mistreatment he has received from the FA, the media and fans is reprehensible. I wish Suarez had less commitment to Liverpool and took his talents elsewhere, where they appreciate skill.

Was it a clumsy dive? Yes. He did get clipped on his right foot and that destabilized him. Could he have stayed up? Yes, but at the cost of losing the ball, so he let himself fall in a very pathetic way. Can I blame him? Only for the poor dive, but not for letting himself fall. There is no way he would have gotten the call if he did not fall.

Most of the rest of the world football, beginning with FIFA, has acknowledged that the talented players must be protected. Mason protected the thugs, pulling yellow cards only for those who hadn't been booked already. Once the FA figures out that fans want to see the Suarezes of the game as opposed to the Huths, and that the Suarezes need to be protected, English football will continue to be mediocre in the international scene.

The British media talks about the Suarez dive and ignores the Huth stamp on the chest. It is the Planet of the Apes!

    ReplyDelete
  55. i agree, hes really let himself down. he should of adapted by now and realise he will be hated round the country for it.
shame because he doesnt need to and hes a great talent

    ReplyDelete
  56. agreed, but there is a delayed reaction from suarez then he dives looks 10 times worse. i love suarez think he is a one in a million talent, pure genius sometimes.
had suarez stamped on someone it would be plastered all over every press opurtunity, and the witch hunt would get worse.
he is not as bad as ashley young, who if he wore a liverpool shirt would be slated the same, but wears a utd one and it pays off for him

    ReplyDelete
  57. The article is discussing the dive. How can we justify it because Huth gave Suarez a tough time during the game?

Its a shocking dive and is it any wonder he doesnt get a penalty when its deserved. He only has himslef to blame. Why doesnt the manager stop him doing this as ultimately the team suffer.

The FA may look at the dive and hopefully look at the Huth stamp, but two wrongs dont make it right.

I cant believe how weak our squad is at the moment? The 'kids' have been a breath of fresh air but the season is long and hard. We seem to be lacking decent options all over the pitch. BR was quoted this week stating that we are still aiming for top four, but it will be difficult!!!!

Does BR think we are stupid? The results so far and the lack of strength in depth point to a mid-table finish in my humble opinion. The jury is still out for BR. Some of the toe-curling clips on the TV programme make me think its all blarney. Does he know who we are and what our expectations are?

    ReplyDelete
  58. The problem is when Suarez plays by the rules and stays on his feet or is deliberately hacked down and gets no decision, then it is obvious he will simulate to try to get something. Yet again he was kicked, stamped on & pulled down yet very few incidents received the referees attention. It has to work both ways, the referee needs to start giving Suarez some protection and maybe he will respect the referee and cut out the simulation.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It seems to me TP has played a great hand. Talk about Suarez diving and how he should be banned has completed diverted from the real talking point which is the stamp by Huth. Diving has never physically hurt anyone unlike Stoke city's rugby sorry football team.

  64. Shut it tony clueless with your anti football tactics. If in doubt kick and stamp on your opponents. Hope stoke get relegated and a decent footballing team get promoted. The embarrassment is stoke to the premier league.

    ReplyDelete
  65. They won't get relegated, mate, because they are very good at what they do. What is annoying is that they have some good footballers in their side, Liverpool were there for the taking, and they still showed a complete lack of ambition.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Exactly. Many players have been injured when playing against Stoke, yet the referees seem to be ok with their excessive physical play. It seems like Stoke have earned their license to play like this because they are simply known for it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Of course it's work in progress, he is a new manager, bringing in a new style of play, this takes time. To think it would be overnight is comepletely naive. Yes it is a results business, but to take things into perspective, we have already played 3 of the top 4 last season and have played some mouthwatering football, unlike the boring, slow, lazy football you claim we are playing. You are obviously a recent fan of Liverpool, because if you have been a fan for longer, you would see the comparisons to the pass and move style we implemented in the 70s and 80s. This "new" style is a modified style of that pass and move style. The signs are there. We are playing with a lot of style, once the front players start knocking the goals in, which will happen, we will be be climbing up the table and knocking on the top 4's door. And you are also contradictory in saying that the fans should get behind Downing and show him respect while he is a Liverpool player, which I actually agree with, but yet you constantly criticise and show disrespect to our manager. Being a Liverpool supporter means that you get behind the players and coaching staff 110% while they are part of our club, no ifs or buts. End of, as you say.

    ReplyDelete
  68. To be fair, Stoke was always going to be an extremely tough game, there's a reason why teams like Arsenal can't beat them either, what was more important is that we got the clean sheet. Stoke are the new Bolton as Bolton were under Alladyce.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I was well in support of downing... really thought he would suit the system and get involved, finally make a name for himself in red... and while I'll grant him a little, yes, he has improved somewhat, but the fact is just that he's not good enough - period!

Sorry mate, but this is not a popularity contest... Downing is not good enough!

    ReplyDelete
  70. who here will play downing ahead of Suso, Sterling, Assaidi, Borini?

    ReplyDelete
  71. but he loses the club nothing if he gets rid of the $hyt3 and plays youth players who DESERVE their place... He in fact saves money then...

    ReplyDelete
  72. I know Gary Neville will get short shrift here, but I think he encapsulates the problem very well here. There is nothing to be done, without some serious thought and restructuring of the game.

  73. I think our aim this season is to avoid relegation. top 4? Hahahahahahahahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  74. Pulis should worry about the lumberjacks he sends out on the pitch to not play football but kick and injure opposition players. Maybe he should worry about his own tactics rather than those of the teams or players he comes up against. As for Suarez, there were numerous occasions where he could have gone down and he stayed on his feet but of course when he loses his balance, falls over and it all looks a bit comical it's because he wants to cheat whereas when the same thing happens to an English player it's just funny. We've seen with the handling of the Suarez case against that of John Terry that English football is full of racists and bigots and I'm not surprised to see that Suarez gets singled out all the time by these racists and racist media. What does surprise me is that he gets singled out by someone who claims to be a Liverpool supporter. I'm sure it isn't about race for you but I honestly don't see why you have to be on his case all the time. And if you do feel the need to, at least be big enough to come back when he does things last week and praise him for the top class player that he is.

  79. If Hodgeson had got the kind of PR team behind him as the one Rodgers has then he would have lasted longer too....fans are to easily fooled.

  80. Sounds to me that most folks are embarrassed by the state of the game, not Suarez in particular. Players go down every single week in football. If you don't you won't get the whistle. Suarez looks silly but it's even more cringeworthy because it reminds us just how bad player behaviour can be and actually IS on a regular basis. Suarez has done nothing that countless other players haven't done and it's got nothing to do with where he's from. Uruguayan football is pretty tough and it doesn't breed a culture of diving. He's gotten to the end of a very long and tough match and simply given up trying to stay upright. It would be odd to single out this incident as special. What's a shame is that the press lately had just started to turn a little bit in his favour. Those non-decisions in previous games had gotten a few folks back on his side.

  82. Thanks for that man! I found it very interesting! Neville makes some very good points about which one can discuss a whole week. Unfortunately, the media thrives on silly conflict and I doubt that Neville's brilliant 'food for thought' will be picked upon by the media's pundits any time soon. Most are just ex-players stating their own opinion with no thought. Anyone can do that.

Damn, I never thought I would be talking so highly of G.Neville. :O

  83. Tony Pulis came out with that nonsense in a weird attempt to deflect attention away from Huth stamp. It somehow worked!!!

There seems to be a different rule book when Stoke are playing. Refs are terrified to book them early on or they'll end up dishing out 4 or 5 reds.

Huth stamp apart, there were multiple yellow card offences ignored in the first half. This allowed the Stoke players to keep on fouling cynically until the flurry of yellows from 70 mins on, when it was too late to end up with rd cards.

Sin bins are the answer. See how long they keep hacking Suarez down with threat of a 10 minute sin bin.

Pulis wants retrospective punishment for a yellow card offence. Ridiculous. His own 6' 4" centre half stamps on a prone opponent, but Suarez should be a man like Glen Johnson and jump to his feet......

    Football coverage is getting TIRESOME.

  84. If you look at it from this view what would say it as? I admit Suarez dives on faint contact but there are players out there that dive at thin air.

  85. Gaz I honestly dont rate him but support liverpool and hope he proves me wrong. Our exciting football you claim mate is only in our own half. Suarez does now what he did in last season.Compare our results against the top four this year than the ones weve had in previous year and we cant even beat stoke at home!!! What planetr are you on?
Oh well you will see through him soon and realise he is experimenting with our club and cant make up his mind.
