'Anything is possible' - Agent responds to rumours over £15m LFC target

Last week, Chiel Dekker, the Agent of PSV Eindhoven star Kevin Strootman, confirmed that defensive midfielder planned to leave Holland in the January transfer window. This was great news for the slew of clubs (including Liverpool and Manchester United) following the talented 22-year old. However, yesterday, Dekker did an about-face and totally contradicted himself, and it now seems like the Dutch international may be staying put until the summer.

Speaking to Reporters last week, Dekker said:

"Strootman has decided that he wants to prove himself in a better league.

"If an agreement is able to be reached with a potentially interested club, PSV will allow Kevin to leave in January"

Then, in an interview last night, when asked if Strootman was still set to leave in January, Dekker contradicted his earlier statement in emphatic terms. He barked:

"Absolutely not. There is absolutely no truth in that. We are only in October. The only thing I can tell you is to call me back in April or May.

"We all know that in football anything is possible. But at the moment it is useless to talk about the market."

Liverpool have been linked with Strootman in the past, and November 2011, Kenny Dalglish even sent Steve Clarke along to scout the player during Holland's 3-0 defeat to Germany.

With Lucas Leiva's continuing injury problems, the club arguably needs another dedicated defensive midfielder, and the Strootman would certainly fit the bill. The Brazilian is an excellent player for Liverpool, but if he continues to suffer injury problems, Liverpool will needed a replacement.

The press has Strootman's value at £15m, but that seems optimistic for a 22-year old who's never played outside Holland. Looking at transfer fees for similar players over the last two years, I sincerely doubt that any club would pay more than £10m-£12m for the player at this stage.

  3. Footballer's agents are very unreliable sources at best.

Their sole role is to enrich their employer, the footballer, and themselves.

  6. I like the look of this guy. Not a priority though. Striker first, then centre-half, then someone who can open up defences (for the wing or the middle), then a backup keeper and then a Lucas backup.

  7. ...backup keeper unless Brad Jones keeps up his recent confidence. I don't think he is one for the long term though.

  9. I don't trust Skrtel and I certainly don't trust Carra nowadays. Wisdom is playing right back or at least covering there until next year, so that means we have Agger and Coates left. Unless Rodgers gives Coates more of a chance to prove himself, I can't be sure on him.
