Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Sunderland yesterday means that the club has now made its worst league start since 1911. The press will have a field day with that juicy little fact, but in reality, it's pretty meaningless. Yes, the club hasn't won a game in the league yet, but it's a new dawn at Liverpool, and things will take time to click into place. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has my full support, and I have total faith that he is the right man for the job. However, that doesn't mean he's above criticism, and some of his decisions for the Sunderland game were a little puzzling.
Dropping Jose Enrique
I'm not the Spaniard's biggest fan but I don't see the logic in dropping him. First, it can't be good for Enrique's confidence to know that the manager would rather play an error-prone right back out of position on the on the left instead of him.
Second, Johnson's mistakes on the left have cost Liverpool goals this season (three to be exact), so it's not like he deserves to keep Enrique out of the team. If Johnson was playing out of his skin I could understand it, but it's the opposite: he's cost Liverpool 4 goals so far this season, and he's provided no attacking end product in the form of goals/assists.
Johnson's positioning is suspect at the best of times, but on the left, it's even worse, and his presence their arguably unbalances the team. Enrique's attacking end product is similarly poor, but he's much more solid defensively, and doesn't make regular mistakes that lead to opposition goals.
From a stats point of view it also doesn't make much sense, as Enrique is superior to Johnson this season on passing accuracy in the opposition half (81% vs. 74%) and defensive duels won (50% vs. 40%).
Sahin stuck on the bench:
What is the point of bringing in players like Sahin if they're not going to be used? Why drop Sahin after just one game? Yes, his performance against Arsenal wasn't the greatest, but it was his first ever game in the Premier League, and came after a period of injury and reduced pre-season. What do people expect?
The Turk has proven himself to be an excellent creative midfielder, with the vision to unlock defences, so why not use that? It's good to see Shelvey in the starting line-up, but there came a point in the game where it was clear that he just wasn't going to make the difference.
With LFC desperate for a win, why not bring on Sahin for Shelvey? This would've given the team a different dynamic, increased the Turk's match-fitness, and potentially improved the chances of winning the game.
Assaidi stuck on the bench
Again, why not play him? The last thing most fans want to see is Stewart Downing coming on when the team needs to score, especially when there are superior options on the bench. It's safe to assume that players on the bench are there because they're fit to play, right? So why not play Assaidi?
If Rodgers trusted him, he would've played him, no? If the manager doesn't trust Assaidi to come on and make an impact against the likes of Sunderland, what was the point in buying him in the first place?
Continued faith in Downing
With Sahin and Assaidi on the bench, my heart sank when I saw Rodgers had chosen Downing to come on and change the game (!) Once again, he was his usual ineffective self, and Rodgers' continued faith in him is a little concerning.
At that point in the game, Rodgers clearly thought that Downing was Liverpool's best option to come on and influence the game. I just don't understand that thought process. To me, it also seemed like a cautious choice; Downing is probably more defensive-minded than Assaidi (After all, Rodgers is trying to turn him into a left back!), so instead of taking a real attacking risk, the manager arguably played it safe.
Taking off Borini so early
With Liverpool desperate for goals, where's the logic in taking off a striker and replacing him with a player who hasn't scored or created a league goal for well over a year? Borini was having a decent game, and, crucially, he was getting into goalscoring positions regularly. He needs time to settle, and yanking him out of the game so early will not do his confidence any good.
Not using subs
Rodgers only used one substitute during the game. Liverpool needed a win, so why not use the attacking options on the bench to try and change the dynamic of the team?
Overall, Rodgers is getting more things right than wrong, and it's great that Liverpool have a manager who is brave enough to stick to his principles in trying to push through much-needed change at Anfield.
The league season starts properly next week, when Liverpool hammer Man United :-)
Note: I feel the need to reiterate this as people will inevitably try and twist my words: it is perfectly possible to offer criticism of a manager and still be 100% behind him.

Borini Injured, Sahin not match fit, Assaidi not match fit, Enrique still nursing a knee injury, Downing your right about
ReplyDeleteThe league season starts properly next week??? Why? After we lose that one will you say it again about the next game?
ReplyDeleteEverything you've said is baseless; Rodgers confirmed in his press conference on Thursday that everyone in the squad was fit, and there no new injury worries. If Sahin and Assaidi were not fit enough, they wouldn't be on the bench. Besides, match-fitness is obtained by...playing matches. And Borini did not go off because he was injured. You made that up.
ReplyDeleteDon't everything so literally. It's a tongue in cheek comment.
ReplyDeleteBaseless.
ReplyDeleteRodgers confirmed in his press conference on Thursday that everyone in the squad was fit, and there no new injury worries. If Sahin and Assaidi were not fit enough, they wouldn't be on the bench. Besides, match-fitness is obtained by...playing matches. And Borini did not go off because he was injured. You made that up.
The fear to lose the game made him bring downing surely, playing like he wants to will surely cost more points to lfc below ten top. Knowing LFC doesn,t have the threat forward teams will just sit back , wait mistakes n launch counter attack n score. they dn,t need twenty chances to score as liverpool does. So long BR isn,t pragmatic in his football philosophy, LFC will pay z price.
ReplyDeleteBR wants as much youth as possible. We were complaining about how previous regime failed to give enough opportunities to youth. In BR's case he is over emphasizing and relying on youth. Shelvey and Sterling worked for him but not Kelly. He should have gone for Jose Enrique or a positional player for another positional player say Jack Robinson(another youth player) for Enrique. I am very excited about youth prospects but I am afraid about the pressure on them to deliver if seniors fail. I want our academic players to prosper but in systematic manner and not rush because we have short squad. I hope BR plays it good enough and buy some quality in January, by quality I mean first team starters unlike Assaidi, Yesil, Borini. Buy someone like Llorente.
ReplyDeletejamie how long will it take brendan to start firing in your opinion
ReplyDeleteCan agree with you on all points, except #2 where Sahin is to replace Shelvey. Sahin is still not fully match-fit, having missed a long spell through injury as well as pre-season. Shelvey was unlucky on a few occasions, & I admire his determination to get forward and at least test the keeper. If anyone is to give way for Sahin, it should be Allen. While Allen's pass rate & ball-holding skill is excellent, most of his passes are the diagonal or back "safe" passes. Forward passes if any, are hardly more than 20 metres. In football, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Allen provides an outlet for the defence to release the ball to him, that's all. If you're crying out for a game-changer, I'd take Shelvey over Allen anytime.
ReplyDeletelol if u said enrique was a mistake for not playing u should stop watching football ;)
ReplyDelete1 agree 100% with you and want to add that americans have to go.
ReplyDeleteHe's already firing; he's just being let down by the players, especially so called senior players like Reina, Skrtel, Gerrard and Johnson.
ReplyDeleteRodgers is trying to overturn 22 years of ingrained philosophy and mentality; that doesn't happen overnight. It's incredibly hard, and will continue to be hard for this entire season.
Rodgers and FSG have a viable long-term plan for the club, but achieving it will mean short-term pain for the club on the field.
Rodgers just doesn't have the players to properly implement his vision right now. Most of the first team needs to be replaced, and transitioning them out will take time.
Of course, results are still needed in the meantime, but they will come.
By Christmas, I think LFC will be in the top 10 at least, and at that point, there will still be lots of points to play for.
LFC will come good under Rodgers, but it's only 4 games into his reign! Perspective and patience is needed.
I felt sad yesterday for Stevie G. If anyone realized it or not, it was the end of Stevie G as Attacking Midfielder or Second Striker that we all cherished for so many years. If anyone remember, at the start of the season Stevie G was emphasizing on how he must play further up "he still got it" and BR use to play him there in all matches but yesterday. I think after first 3 league games both of them realized Stevie G cannot deliver as he used to do before and hence it was Shelvey as Attacking Midfielder yesterday and Gerrard as Box to Box holding midfielder. I think it was end of attacking Stevie G because our team looked much better with him providing killer passes from back which Joe Allen couldn't. Joe Allen is basically a tackling and possession midfielder and can never be Alonso. Stevie G was very effective in this role just like in Euros he will find this role more fitting and we might never see him play as second striker again.
ReplyDeleteOh, here's the 7th mistake -
ReplyDeletePlaying Suarez on he left and Sterling on the right for the first half. Why? Sterling has always been a left-winger and Suarez is more comfortable with the ball on his right foot, so why make the change when you're still chasing your first win in the league? Baffling!
I doubt Sahin is ever going to replace Rodgers' golden boy, and nor should he. Playing Sahin in a deeper role is a waste of time as it means he'll spend most of his time tackling/breaking up play, when he should be making through balls and building attacking play. That's what he did for Dortmund, and that's what he should be doing for LFC. He hasn't been brought here to do the donkey work.
ReplyDeleteRe Allen - it should be remembered that he is basically covering for Lucas at the moment, so he's playing defensively, which is precisely what Lucas does. Why should be be criticised for that? How else should he play in that role?
If Lucas was in the team, Allen's game would be a little different'; he wouldn't have to worry a bout defending so much, and could be more progressive.
Great point. Totally agree.
ReplyDeleteThe way he played for Dortmund doesn't matter anymore. Even at Real Madrid he was given a role of tackling, retaining possession and occasionally dribble from the flanks. I don't see him playing in Advanced Playmaker role and also he is kind of luxury player and I don't see any hunger in him. Also, looks like he is doing a favor on Liverpool by playing for us. I know last 2 statements are gibberish but that's what I feel about a player who wanted to play for Arsenal and wants to go back to Real Madrid as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteIf Liverpool take the chances they make then they would win games easily, so frustrating, if Liverpool take their chances next weekend they will thrash the Salford filth.
ReplyDeleteIt is ridiculous for the manager to just have 2 peripheral attackers in his disposal and no other attacking options on the bench as to make changes and push the team to win. The owners must provide sufficient funds to the manager as he can bring in capable reinforcements in January. The owners have deprived this team the ability to compete for the title by not providing those funds in the summer as the manager could bring in a quality winger and attacker as well as they left Brendan Rodgers to walk in a field full of thorns until December. They do not have any excuse for that. When you decide to buy a club of the status of LFC you know from before what it takes to be the owner of such prestigious club. I just hope they can realize it now!
ReplyDeleteIMO, this contradicts a lot of your opinions regarding players. You say "it will take time" however you moan for instant and radical changes to the team in other articles.
ReplyDeleteCarroll out, Henderson out, Downing out, Johnson out....
On the other hand - "22 years of ingrained philosophy and mentality". If you are referring to over spending and mediocrity then I applaud you for that.
I think the worry Allen has is that his stats look good. I am sure he is a pro on 1 of them computer games. 100% passing accuracy, but all passes my 10year old cousin can make.
ReplyDeletemanagers try to be to clever for there own good and it seldom works ..........really disapointed in the way the subs where used yesterday but im getting used to the way Liverpool managers do it......
ReplyDeleteHi Pete - I don't think it's a contradiction. Downing, Henderson, Carroll and Johnson have had lots of time. Borini et al have had 4 games (!) - I only started to call for Downing and Carroll to be sold in the final month of last season too.
ReplyDeleteRe the 22 years comment; I'm definitely referring to over-spending and mediocrity: http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2012/09/blame-them-not-us-lfc-owner-slams-hicks.html
Ok I am not downings biggest fan but I will say that I though he did better than borini and helped the shape of the team. Ok I know downing only beat the first man with 1 of his crosses and that 1 hit the the second man but hey he looked assured and experienced. Something we are lacking. Too much reliance of the 5 experienced players we have in our squad.
ReplyDeleteDon't know why BR doesn't like enrique? Was he not one of our better players last year. Of sorry his stats say he gives the ball away too much. Only 80% accuracy. Someone needs to tell BR that at least he tried to play the ball forward and get us a goal.
We are not allowed to spend money on good quality proven players, instead we must waste it on either young British talent or young ex Swansea championship quality players.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Pete. I have always said it that this blog will be better when issues are viewed dispassionately and fairly. A hypothetical question will be: what would you say if by Dec we are in the relegation zone? sounds unlikely, but not entirely impossible; never say never.
ReplyDeleteThe buck stops with Rodgers .....it you had 27million to spend and you buy Borini and Allen....two players with combined value of 10mill and we pay 27million ...
ReplyDeleteAssande 3million....total 30million
Adam Johnson went for 10million
moussa dembele went for 15million
adebayor 5million
total 30million
i know which i would rather have
Players of the calibre of Gerard, Skrtl and Reina are the ones that shouldn't need the time of the other players yet they're the ones making mistakes! I think he means the whole team together will take time, the youth etc... So I don't believe he's contradicting himself. The players you mentioned like he said have had plenty of time to prove themselves and they haven't! I think only Henderson and johnson could potentially adapt in time to the new philosophy, but instead of playing Johnson LB, he should play Enrique there and either move Johnson into midfield if he wants kelly to play too whilst giving Sterling a break and keeping downing out of the team for the better, however I think downing can play Enriques LB role adequately, I see the traits in him to do so! Just my 2 cents :)
ReplyDeleteBut they aren't Rodger's mates are they? I quite like BR and he should get some time but, he is doing exactly what Hodgson did and signing players he knows to give himself some support in the dressing room. It's a cowardly approach.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!! How much arrogance does it take for a person who runs a website to tell a professional football manager what mistakes he's made in producing a football team for a particular match (without knowing the details or thought process that went into this managers decisions). That really is a staggering piece of self serving garbage.
ReplyDeleteBut to be fair - there's only one person for the job - Kanwar!
I agree with u 100%. I have 3 degrees in Economics and Statistics so I know that stats dont tell all the story. Pass accuracy 100% so what? I would rather have a pass accuracy of 70% and 10 assists than 100% with no assists
ReplyDeleteJohnson has been picked by every manager he ahs ever played for, including international level. I think this is a case of you just not seeing the full picture jaimie
ReplyDelete"Some people cannot see a priest on a mountain of sugar" :)
only agree with u on allen, the rest of your comments make me laugh jamie.
ReplyDeletebest thing rogers did was make stevie play deep
ReplyDeletewas it not sterling who made the goal? i remember KK playing football in central defence.........or gerrard playing at right back. Carragher playing in midfield and spearing in defence......
ReplyDeleteYes, team looked much better.
ReplyDeleteI see facts and self-evident truths. It's a fact that Johnson's defensive frailty has cost Liverpool 4 goals in 4 games. Being an international player is irrelevant to that fact.
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly is the 'full picture' you speak of? Johnson's is not a good defender, and he rarely scores or creates goals. So what exactly do he do to improve the team?
More self serving arrogance - you really lead the field in that category.
ReplyDeleteI think things will look a bit better after few weeks, more settled. I see them buying proven players in January not because our management is great but to ease up the pressure from the fans. We need some proven players no matter which way they come.
ReplyDeleteMay I add to your IMO correct list:
ReplyDeleteNOT dropping reina despite his costly errors EVERY game INCLUDING Sunderland
In that case the club should try to sign your 10 year old cousin as soon as possible. Any chance you can talk him into it?
ReplyDeleteJamie having read these posts, the one thing that is really evident is that you cannot deal with people challenging you and your views. A lot of your comments make sense and i understand where you are coming from. Howefer,if someone disagrees with you, don't get on your high horse and get funny eith them. People as are you entitled to their own thoughts.
ReplyDeleteAs a season ticket holder since i was 8 ( and I was 51 on Wednesday you do the sums) I am amazed all you guys are wasting you time here and are not earning millions as premier league managers as you are such experts. Players and managers take time to settle. We can all argue about the fees involved but the likes of Carroll and Henderson are young talented international footballers who nutured properly and with experience will come good. Do you honestly think your comments help them? The expectations at a club like lpool is hard enough with carrying all you lot on their backs. It seems you expect every player to be an instant hit. How many games has Henderson actually started in his proper position? You are all the same people who wanted Lucas sold for dog meat after three games. You are discussing Sahin and Assaidi as if you have actually watched them play instead of basing your expert opinions on Champioship Manager or two miniute clips on YouTube. Terry Mc Dermott, Ian Rush, Ray Kennedy, Bruce Grobellaar all legends who didn't make an instant impact at Anfield but they had the advantage of developing into a winning team not one consistantly under presssure like our recent buys have been. Not wishing to give ManUre any credit but where would they be now if they had the same attitude to Fergie that we have had with our recent managers/ I don't know how good BR is beause I have not followed his career and importantly never spoken to the guy but then again neither have you lot. I will reserve judgement but in ther mean time i will get behind everyone at the club.
ReplyDeleteAnother pop at Stevie !
ReplyDeleteGood points. If LFC don't sign a striker in January, I think FSG will have a fan mutiny on their hands (!)
ReplyDeleteThere's a difference between fit and match fit! Kanwar your wrong Nuff said!
ReplyDeleteHow can you make a comment if your tongue is in your cheek?
ReplyDeleteI actually think that if you're going to play them wide, that is the right configuration, since you want Suarez to come in centrally and Sterling can provide natural width and get to the byline with his pace and trickery.
ReplyDeleteIdeally both would be able to cut in, but as it is Suarez is the one you'd like to see drift inside more.
I hear Gulacsi is a good GK.
ReplyDeleteThe Borini thing is wrong, but he probably has a point about match sharpness with regards to Sahin and Assaidi. Also, if they weren't fit enough, it isn't like Rodgers has loads of other people he could pick.
ReplyDeleteHarsh to blame Reina for the goal yesterday. Sold up the river by 3 seperate defensive mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI'd still rather have Reina in goal (off form) than play Brad Jones, especially the week before we play United.
So you delete my comment. Psthetic and childish and just proves my point that you dont like people not agreeing with you and one sided comments. garywhogoesthegame - spot on mate with your comments.
ReplyDelete...or people he knows who understand and can implement his methods.
ReplyDeleteWell, according to my detractors, I'm some kind of demon with a forked tongue, so one half can be 'in cheek', leaving the other free to comment.
ReplyDeleteFair points.
ReplyDeleteHow does one obtain match fitness? Sitting on the bench?
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that the Scientology-esque Gerrard cult to which you clearly belong allows you to access the outside world via the internet ;-)
ReplyDeleteFair points.
ReplyDelete"Against the likes of Sunderland".
ReplyDeleteIf LFC supporters have ever wondered why they are regarded as arrogant, by supporters of other clubs, then they have to look no further than their "Sky Boy" contingent who post comments such as this!
Jaimie, you need to grow up and learn to show some respect
Goalkeeper is not good enough anymore Shelvey is not good enough Kelly not good enough sterling to young Borini is a Combination of both to young and not good enough you have Gerard and Suarez on two islands trying to reach each other this is bad very bad. These where the comments at half time from Eric Wynalda on fox soccer and anyone who had even a basic knowledge of soccer would have to fully agree with him . I was born is Breck road and have followed lfc for 50 years and this is by far the worst team and over all set up that I ever seen at our club.Being Liverpool starts in 2hours here if they really want to know what being Liverpool means they need to go back no more then 5 years when we where rated the number one team in Europe and challenged for the champions league every year and we had a truly worldclass team with a truly worldclass manager.
ReplyDeleteI agree that BR will make the difference but at what stage would you say he wont?? i have faith and i am backing him fully but at what stage do we say, he should have doen better or i thought he was better than that? hypothetically if we come around 12th to 15th at the end of the season, what do you do?
ReplyDeletePeople are going on about january signings, but i bet the only thing that happends is carrol returns. I hvae been looking at liverpools amortisation bill and it is astronomical. It would not be so bad if we had CL money to prop it up but because of this i think we will look for a bargain in janiuary as FSG will not want the amortisation to go any higher than it is already. Its astonishing really and after looking into all of this i can understand the massive cut to the wage bill as this will reduce the overall expenditure and bring us into line with FFP, especiially now the monitoring period is in full swing.
We, all LFC fans around the world we should be unified and if we see no progress from FSG we should ask them to sell the club to a wealthy owner.
ReplyDeleteI will gladly donate him for free. But better make sure the Americans can afford a pack of dummy bears per week. Or does not that fit their wage structure?
ReplyDeleteDowning brought a better balance to the team and provided a bit more width, although surely long term he is not the answer. Enrique is still nursing a knee injury and I think Rodgers likes Kelly anyway and won't be surprised to see Kelly replacing Johnson eventually. The problem with making substitutions was that we were playing some excellent football and were totally dominant in the 2nd half and but for some wayward finishing we would have scored a few more. Besides who do you bring off? Every player was playing well and working hard.
ReplyDeleteAint they already got 1? I am sure most of us thought a striker was already coming in when carroll left.
ReplyDeleteJaime, tell me how many goals in the Premier League has Enrique scored since arriving from Newcastle..LET ME HELP YOU NONE.
ReplyDeleteI'm sick to death of people who ONLY focus on the negative aspects when it suits them, ignoring the fact that Johnson provides ASSISTS.
SOMETHING NONE OF THE OTHER FULLBACKS OFFER NO DO THEY SCORE GOALS IN THE PREM.
Most of the rest of your comments I agree with but unless anyone comes up with a better FULLBACK in the CURRENT SQUAD then it does no good to have a berate him when Johnson Statistically is our BEST FULLBACK
waiting to see if my post makes it or not
ReplyDeleteJaimie,
ReplyDeleteAs much as I respect some of your views I'm starting to lose patience with some of your antic, which is a shame cus you have some valuable contributions.
This is your site and you can run it how you wish, however if you want to grow and develop it better you have to allow debate which doesn't agree with yours to flourish.
Even if it makes you wrong.
A good Journalist will always admit when they are wrong and learn from the mistakes.
I rarely personalise any attacks, I keep my post clean and I always thought that you were reasonable.
I'm disappointed by what I'm seeing with my posts ,as well as those from some others.
If you need help managing this site then set some RULES ON THE LADING PAGE.
This will make it clear to all who post here before they are MODERATED.
well said
ReplyDeletehe was far more effective in this role.. he was more involved in our play...
ReplyDeletei agree with you
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about? It makes no sense - debate that disagrees with me does flourish. This site has 150,000 comments, the majority of which disagree with me. How do they stay live if there is moderation going on?
ReplyDeleteI don't know how many times I have to explain this but I'll do so again: there is a word filter in place which flags spam/troll posts. Occasionally, legitimate posts get caught. This process is automatic. However, any legitimate posts caught by fhe filter go live very quickly.
This system is essential, or the site would be overrun with spam/troll posts.
And what 'antics' are you talking about? Trying to make the comment section a civil place to.debate football, free of insults, hostility and sniping?
If I did nothing, this site would.end.up like most other LFC forums: a haven for online bullies, intolerance, constant personal attacks and opinion censorship.
That is not going to happen.here, and if the odd post being held by the word filter is the fallout from achieving that, then it's a small price to pay.
The idea that posts are deleted because they disagree is simply ridiculous and totally false. The only posts that are deleted are abusive/sniping posts, and if people have a problem with that, tough luck.
People who can't debate without hurling insults/sniping are not welcome here, and the people who complain about their posts being deleted are usually those who've ignored the comment policy.
Nothing is criticised/challenged more on this site than my views on LFC, and that is fine with me. It's not an issue of right or wrong; I'm just a fan with an opinion like everyone else, and I defend my views just like other fans. There is no right or wrong in football, it's just opinions. I don't go.around telling.people to.admit they're wrong, so why should I admit I'm wrong about an opinion, which by its very nature has no right or wrong?
I regularly defer to others' views, and praise people for their thoughtful opinions. What else should I do? It's not a competition; it's just football fans talking about football.

the main problem we have is our manager cant evolve a team but can only change it.
ReplyDeletesaid it about allen for weeks and 10 assists i would settle for 10 forward passes
ReplyDeleteno it dosent he wants to much hes overpriced never mind we will have to do with what we have got we are fsg we will not be held to ransom over players
ReplyDeleteIf he really can pass that good, I'd be willing to pay those gummy bears, but I'd like to have 10% of all his earnings in his future football career.
ReplyDeletesame hear m8 been banned myself if you disagree you get a snidey reply which is usally removed by himself soon. jaimie writes some good stuff that divides opinions thats why i like it but posts should be printed as long as there not offensive.i also ive seen some posts on hear that make you think is it 1 rule for 1 and 1 for another ps probably going to get banned now lol let you know
ReplyDeleteShelvey has got potential and going forward he can be dangerous because he looks to move forward and has a killer boot, but finished article he is not and he failed to play a role against Sunderland. Pull out the tape and watch him casually meander around the front half and shoot first, look for a pass second. I would have had him off after 30 for Sahin. Keep faith with Borini he is a footballer.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Rodgers goes, he gives Liverpool a plan, a way of playing we haven't had since early Benitez(before he started to outthink himself) we are playing better football that I enjoy watching. But we don't have Messi, so a smart man makes adjustments, it is ok to lose the ball in the attacking half because that is where we should be playing, around their penalty box where we can create chances, not in our back half. First instinct should always be to go forward, at the moment they go back.
Keep the faith but those that adjust to their environment survive and prosper.

We could do with more people like you coming on here really. A bit of perspective at times would help a lot of us keyboard warriors.
ReplyDeleteJaimie,
ReplyDeleteFare enough but as you know I'm a regular contributor to your sight and it's one of the best hence why I come here.
Unlike others whose name we shall not mention hence the devil appear;-)
I'm moaning about being moderated twice in the last day,I suppose it's because I don't know why.
Just a suggestion, maybe some kind of rules when people come in, so they know not to swear or abuse etc.
The Moderator thing can be explained as well it's a suggestion.
I know your a fan and frankly you take a lot of crap from lazy posters which isn't deserved.
Well said, Sir.
ReplyDeletejaimie call me thick but could you please give me a link to the comments policy as i have looked and cannot find it thank you
ReplyDeleteThere has been a catalogue of errors from all defenders this yr as they are trying to adapt to a new style of play. I feel sorry for johnson as he seems to get all the flak on here but to be fair, he was playing in a different position and trying to adapt to a new style.
ReplyDeleteThe fact is liverpool maybe going through a change of style but that should not mean we do not win games. This is the problem when we are changing our system. last yr KD was supposidly changing our system but was slaughtered and was blamed for all the teams lack of scoring ability and winnig games we had dominated.
So we now have BR and like KD i will give him time to get it right. I stated last yr i would have given KD another yr and likewise if it all goes south and we do end up coming mid table, i will stick by BR. Yes i may get down and frustrated but that does not mean I will want him gone.
The problem is that if Liverpools form does not change and we find ourselves in mid table at christmas, the mood will change with some of the fans on here who once backed KD to then disrespectfully call him foolglish andwant him out are the same people who hailed the signing of BR and will no doubt be on his back calling him to be sacked.
Additionally, If we do come mid table FSG will no doubt sack BR as they do not take prisoners and will act fast to any type of failiure. dont forget they have a mentality to that of abramovic, its not they get frustrated, they just look at the buisness and see it going in decline so they change the management to get results. Some people have slated the likes of Real madrid and chelsea for changing managers but what they forget is the likes of chelsea are CL champions and are top of the league. their ownership is simple, win or your out. I dont agree with this and would like to give the manager time as it is the best policy to have long term success.
ReplyDeleteagree but what about kd should he not have been given more time i look at the football this season comperde to last and this season as been woeful
ReplyDeleteIf Brenden rodgers continues too play Downing, he will have a fan mutiny on his hands, Assaidi and Sahin, could be a great partnership in the middle, im sorry but Downing needs to leave in January. Brenden needs goals, and ive said this since Kenny and Comolli bought Downing, he Isin`t good enough for our club, thiers more talent within our youth team, Suso, Ibe, Pacheco, Coady, all better than Downing and i Know Pacheco is a forward.
ReplyDeleteHOW THE FUCK DO YOU GET MATCH FIT ON THE BENCH THICKO

who dare drop steven gerrard though, shelvey looking class above our old great
Septimus - you're right. The posting rules should be made clearer, and I will work on that this week. I value your opinion, and please be assured that your comments are never moderated; it's just the pesky word filter. It applies to me too - sometimes my posts get held back. It's a necessary evil unfortunately.

gerrard needs to be repositioned not dropped hes still got years left if played in the right position hate 2 say it but look at schoals and that welsh man who play for that team down the road
ReplyDeleteWithout the advantage of watching each player in training and having an awareness of their match fitness I dont think you can really call BR's selection choices as mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI don't often agree with your point of view, but respect it all the same. On this occasion though, I find the whole article is baseless and has no value.
First of all Jamie, excellent site. I love the crap you get :-)
ReplyDeleteOk now the problem with Liverpools play is the final pass. Suarez has no confidence in playing the one-two and hence tries to take on everyone. Remember last season when he was clicking with Maxi and Merieles which resulted in quite a few goals. I think this is what's missing and hence the results.
See now the American in you is coming out. It's all about profit for you. You ain't JW Henry by any chance?
ReplyDeletejaimie you realy are petish i posted a genuine question but yet again you choose to ignore it then the next thing i know i will be banned for wrong post.you are the sniper on here if people disagree with you you will not let it lay its you who carrys things on so you can bar them you need to lighten up.ive never used bad language i have just disagreed with you sometimes but you are two vindictive to be be impartial .if you dont give new posters a chance you will loose future fans this is not a rant this is just my point of view
ReplyDeleteHow many times? It is NOT about people disagreeing with me. Get a grip for god's sake. In your last post, you were bitching and moaning as usual, and making insinuations thate are just not true. If you do any of the following, your post will be deleted:
ReplyDelete* Insult players, managers, other posters etc
* Harass other posters with snide comments
* Make false insinuations about me or the site (i.e. that I delete comments I disagree with, which is ridiculous)
You have disagree with me many times about football issues, and that is fine; in fact, I welcome it.
Insinuating that I delete posts that don't agree with me is different; it is untrue, and I'm not going to have people making stupid claims like that on this site. If you want to do that, go to TIA, or RAWK, and post about it there.
Your point about 'new posters' is ridiculous. Give them a chance? People who debate in a civil manner have nothing to worry about. Those who bitch and moan about the site and/or cast false aspersions about the way it's run are the ones who'll find their posts deleted.
I am going to repeat this once more: if you or *anyone* says that I delete football-related posts that disagree with me once more, you will be permanently banned. It is not true, and I'm sick of having to explain this over and over again.
As I always have to point out: LOOK AROUND. Almost every comment disagrees with my view, and many of them do so vociferously. Why do those comments stay live? Simple: they're civil.
That is what opinion is all about. I have the opinion that Rodgers made mistakes. Every football fan has opinions, including you. Perhaps all football fans should be banned form having an opinion because we don't get to watch the players in training...?
ReplyDeleteIt's on the left side of the screen. Just scroll down the page and you'll see it.
ReplyDeleteIf I was American I would have called for an air strike against everybody who disagrees with me on here quite some time ago...
ReplyDelete4 games, ?? were you on holiday. ??
ReplyDelete4 league games
ReplyDeleteAgain its not 4 games, it is EIGHT.
ReplyDeleteI obviously meant 4 league games. But you knew that.
ReplyDeleteSo, just where did our goal come from, oh ok, Sterling on the right.
ReplyDeleteLike Borini does.
ReplyDeletei hope sahin gets match fit quick b cos gerrard looks like hes goin down hill quickly makin too many mistakes suarez trying to beat every player isnt good either but he can be excused b cos hes no to pass to
ReplyDeleteI was really considering it all, until I read the last line.
ReplyDeleteSunderland were there to be taken, we did not take this advantage and once again we lose another 2 points.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they would not of scored if Enrique was there, as it was too easy for their wide man to go through Johnstone.
I agree Borini should play in the middle to get the best out of him, Suarez I think can play both left or right, he is a intricate tricky player who can easily rip through any defence, but at times his finishing is poor as his concentration levels weakend or options are limited by the time he pulls the trigger or trying to lay it off to another forward, his job would be made easy if more players can get in he box with him.
In the last 30 mins of the 2nd half Assaidi should of come on to replace Shelvy and Shain for Gerrard, they could of provided a real headache for Sunderland defence but I am guessing BR is keeping them for the Thursday game.
With Assaidi's blistering pace who normally plays on the right, that means Sterling would have to switched to the left wing, and with Sahin behind Suarez could of broke Sunderland's defence towards the end.
Sunderland were on a back foot after we scored and it just needed a little tweak could of got all 3 points.
Anyhow Man U are next and we need to rip their egos, and put them in their place, so lets get behind our ever faithfull XI Red Machine and get your voices in tune for next weekends 12th men. Everytime if the Mancs try to sing about Suarez or our try to rip into our Team we need to drown out their weak cries, we really need to put the fear in them and the opposing team, so come on!!!
YNWA.
I can find a fault with every one of your reasons, worst article I've seen on this website. Please people remember this will take time. I predict scraping a top 10 this season, top 6 next and top 4 after that. Be patient, Rodgers inherited an expensive flop of a team which in no way fit with his philosophy, he was then only able to spend under 30m in the transfer window.
ReplyDeleteWho the hell is Assande?
ReplyDeleteSuarez was played on the left because lets face it he isn't exactly going to bomb it down the wing and whip it in, he was whats called an inverted winger, its no longer the days of "right footed goes on the right wing". Suarez on the right wing is a disaster, just as Borini was, Sterling was excellent on the right.
ReplyDeleteIf Skrtel had done his job we would have won.
ReplyDeleteSunderland had one strike on target.
It's coming together. I'd back the manager over any knee jerk reactions here.
I dunno, but he's worth £3mil apparently
ReplyDeletewell if you and others can see the deficiencies what hope have we? there's always a 'new dawn' with a new manager. lets hope BR is not stubborn and sees the error of his ways. doubt it though. bye bye BR. too much too soon. we are not swansea.
ReplyDeleteWell said Jaimie , I posted more or less the same thing concerning
ReplyDeletethe subs on another site . I am not a fan of Shelvey, he definitely
flatters to deceive . Could not understand why BR did not give
Sahin , Assaidi 30 mins each . Also its games like this & there
will be a lot of them when big Andy would have been a godsend
coming on for the last 30 mins. For me 2 pts thrown away .
Well put. I am from Australia, and have followed Liverpool since I was about 10, since I remember anyway. All I have heard over the years is how loyal Liverpool supporters are and how supportive of their players. A vast majority of the fans on this site obviously have forgotten what "You'll never walk alone" means. BR will take time implementing a whole new system, it was obviously easier at Swansea because he didn't have reputations to deal with and the huge expectations.
ReplyDeleteTime is all that is needed and supporters, TRUE SUPPORTERS are willing to wait. Just think how sweet it will be when the elusive title is won again, on the back of stratagy and team play as opposed to millions spent.
International level is hardly a reliable measure of how good a player is, especially with England. On one hand, you got the likes of Jay Bothroyd, Henderson, Livermore and on the other, you got the likes of Richards who barely get a look in. Many a player have earned plenty of caps that make you wonder how on earth did they manage to get so many caps, such as the likes of SWP and Downing. Johnson was hardly first choice at Chelsea anyway (though in his defence, he was young). With all due respect to the teams, it was only at mid-table teams (at best) West Ham and Pompey he was first XI player, hardly something illustrates he is a top right back. Now a first XI player at Liverpool, a club that has struggled most of the time he has been there (not blaming him entirely, to be clear). I won't arrogantly say 'hows that for bloody 'full picture'' but football is full of subjectivity and perception, your so-called full picture is just one way of looking at it, regardless of how many cheesy Rafa quotes one puts in their perception. Playing for Portsmouth, Hammers, squad player at Chelsea, playing for the failures that are England and fallen giants that we Liverpool are who have finished mid-table of late, doesn't prove conclusively or illustrate a full picture that Glen Johnson is a class right back.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair Shelvey played better than Gerard....and he is only 20!!!
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, Kelly is a very, very, very, very limited player. He is poor going forward (notwithstanding all the praise he seems to get) and average as a defender. Johnson on the right and Enrique (flaws and all) on the left. It's easy. If not, try Downing instead of Enrique. He can be an excellent offensive outlet, something this team sorely needs. LFC is too slow and predictable when the ball comes from the back to midfield and from midfield forward. Sorry, I forgot that the ball does not go from the midfield forward unless Suarez drops 20 yards to get the ball.
ReplyDeleteWhat about their salaries i guess Adeybayor would be on top dollar.
ReplyDeleteif he is a flop you are stuck with him, thats prob y he went for 5m.
two of our `stars` Carra & Cole r on 3m per year thats great value
for money .Wtf do you get Borini & Allen on a combined value
of 10m . Stick to your f play station you dumb t..t .
Ffs another IRWT idiot.
ReplyDeleteShelvey looking class plz enlighten me what did he actually do .
ReplyDeleteWas actually at the game, Downing did well when he came on more effective than Borini... on a side note it's not the side I would of picked... and Joe Allen offers no more than Jordan Henderson can, don't see what he adds other than sideways passes... he isn't that good.
ReplyDeletethanks for that
ReplyDeletere last post i gave you an hour to reply you had replyed to others in that time sorry i thought you were not going to reply thank you for clearing up the comments issue for me there is no malice in my posts sometimes a bit of humour i will read the comments policy and try not to fall foul of it again
ReplyDeleteandy shutup,if you cant bring something to the table then dont bother tuirning up
ReplyDelete...or prepared to take a step backwards, whereas the others came from 'lesser' clubs.
ReplyDeleteRodgers will cement the mid to low table status of LFC, in a solid and consisten manner.
ReplyDeleteThey will all fail until Benitez comes back. The Second Coming will happen sooner than you think
Do you know how long things take to EVOLVE? Give the man some time. At least see out the season.
ReplyDeleteJohn, believe me, your comments are valued, and there's no conspiracy behind the scenes to delete peoples' comments. I am also subject to the same filter, and sometimes, my posts don't go live straight away.
ReplyDeleteDue to the volume of comments, I can't respond to them all, and it's a time issue too, so if I don't get to your comment within a short period of time, it doesn't mean anything negative. I see these threads as ongoing conversations that can last for says, if not weeks.
I agree with some of your points, but he did not drop Enrique, he has been having fitness troubles with his knees recently and that is why he was not involved in the squad. Therefore there was no choice but to put Johnson on the left, as we don't have anyone to fill this role when Enrique is out. Johnson did make a mistake, but it has to be expressed this isn't his preferred side of play.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with not bringing off Shelvey, he has had many chances of starting, and I have to say he isn't impressive. We need to be giving our new signings a chance, otherwise what was the point in signing them to not play? Even throwing them on at the end, just to try and scrape a goal and our first win of the season.
With Borini, I don't think he has quite proved himself as of yet, I know it takes time to settle in to a team, although he did look a bit sharper on Saturday than he has in recent games. So I do believe it was right to take him off.
Its the striker problem we have, no one can score! And those that attempt to were just unlucky, i.e - once again hitting the post, hitting the bar, oppositions keeper making decent saves. We do need someone in, either a free transfer or using the youth.
Yet as the below states, we have a new manager bringing a fresh and new style of tika taka football into the club. Which means our current players have to get used to a new style of play, and including the new signings who have to first settle in to the club, be trained how we play and how to play with our current players. We can not expect miracles straight away as Rodgers stated, we have a strong young team mixed with a few with solid experience, we have built a team for the future, not for now. We are a strong side, with potential to grow stronger. There is no doubting the fact that, in the Man City and Sunderland games we have dominated yet been unlucky and made defensive errors, and once the team has gelled together , LFC will be once again a champions league title contender. But for now, we need to get behind this new revolution of players and the manager/owners.
Great points, Sophie. Perhaps you're right about Enrique - I guess we'll find out in the Man United game; if Johnson starts again ahead of him, that will be telling.
ReplyDeleteAgree about the striker situation; let's just hope we're not saying the same things about being unlucky, hitting the bar etc at Christmas (!)
there their they're
ReplyDeleteI cannot understand the negative criticism of BR and Liverpool after the game against Sunderland. I was quite heartened by our performance and if you offered me that level of performance for the remaining 34 league games I would grab it. Cast your mind back to last season when we lost 1-0 to Sunderland-we were rubbish on the day. We completely dominated the game this time around and were desperately unlucky not to win. We had 67% possession, hit the woodwork twice, brought several saves from their keeper. Despite being the home team and playing their first home game of the season, in front of a live TV audience, they had one shot on target in the entire game. Sure, we lack a good center forward but is that BR's fault? I thought Shelvey had a great game, considering he is just 20. Hard to say whether Sahin would have changed the game as we didn't see much of him against Arsenal. I presume we will see Assaidi midweek so we might know more about him then. I wrote several months ago on this site about how tough a start we had (does SAF create the fixture list :-) ?) and wondered how long it would take for people to start moaning. The lack of a striker (we are short 2 or maybe 3 IMO) will haunt us but I am hoping the improvement in our general all round play will partly compensate. Time will tell.
ReplyDeleteI just dont know how tou were reading the game coz GJ was the best player before Raheem Sterling suddenly stafted asking questions.secondly Johnson is self motivated and easily raises the ante of our game. Then Downing inclusion really changed the game positively.Just because of the past out put you judge him harshly.defemsive errors are easing the more we gel.cedlz
ReplyDelete100%correct..........
ReplyDeleteAgain, real life is NOT Football Manager !!!!!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Good assessment on the game n clearly Rodgers got very cautious n chose to be safe. We needed Assaidi to be tested in attack where we needed to win, Assaidi's a fighter n his can't lose character would have been the spark we needed just like Suarez and what's left of Gerrard. Both Sahin n Assaidi shoud have been thrown in the last 15-20 mins. Really desperate to watch Assaidi. If Sterling is a breeze of fresh air, I can just imagine the electric Assaidi displays !!!
ReplyDeleteSuso,Morgan,Yesil and Assaidi still never been using. No point bring young talent but you cannot trust or brave to give the chances to play.We need new combination before LFC new striker. This january LFC need to bring atleast 2 strikers,The best target is Gonzalo Higuin,Radamel Falcao or Endisson Cavani. But only F.Llorente hot player will be buy.Much better let using what else you having in your list rather than recall back A,Carroll.Give them all high level games for good experiance."PRACTICE MAKE IT PERFECT".Allowed they grow up with right development plan.Good benefit is LFC can save the budget and can consider to investment for high profile players.Break the bank acc only for the proven quality players.I have suggestion for team :
ReplyDeleteREINA
JOHNSON-------------- SKRTEL---------AGGER
COATES
GERRARD--------------SAHIN--------------STERLING
ALLEN
SUAREZ
YESIL----------------------------ASSAIDI
Let try give duty to Suarez play same as messi at Barcelona.F.Borini replacement for assaidi and Suso for Yesil.Or maybe Suso can replace Suarez. No point to used Downing and Henderson if only comes to complete the team but cannot give big impact for the clubs. With dribble ball fail and passing skill struggle,Can you call him the wingers if all this thing they cannot make it.For the future i hope used young players...please2.
I think Rodgers started Shelvey instead of Sahin because Shelvey has been recently developing into a player who can score goals. Considering we are a side who is struggling to score goals, having Shelvey on the pitch made tactical sense because it gave the team an attacking mind-set. Given the formation we played with, the only player Sahin would have replaced is Allen.
ReplyDeleteSahin spent most of his time playing in a central midfield duo for Dortmund (him and Bender were really good together), with say Kagawa or Goetze in the hole in front. But Sahin got forward plenty (partially due to the way Klopp's gets his team to press quickly and in packs, so he ends up getting the ball higher up the field). He is more than comfortable in a central midfield duo and spent majority of his career in such a role but it would be criminal not to give him the freedom to at least be somewhat box-to-box from there, i.e., allowed to get forward. That is where he is different from the likes of Xabi and Allen, that he can change gears and get forward more comfortably, rather than be recycling possession which he is very good at also. Definitely a orchestrator but one that can get forward. I guess kinda like Modric.
ReplyDeleteThough will be interesting to see how he does in a more advanced position, i.e., in the hole/attacking midfield role, with Lucas-Allen behind him, as its not a role he has been used in a lot. Him-Lucas behind Herrera would have been more interesting going forward for me (though that isn't to say Allen hasn't/won't be good, its just the money saved on him, could maybe be spent on a player like Herrera who is more comfortable in the hole/attacking midfield role than both Sahin and Allen). Herrera, just like Sahin at Dortmund and Allen at Swansea, is used to a pressing game at Bilbao. So not surprised at all if Rodgers wanted Herrera as not only is he technically very good, he can also press like how Rodgers sometimes wants his players to do.
