Mark Halsey: An apology on behalf of reasonable LFC fans...

Premier League referee Mark Halsey - who refereed Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday - has made a complaint to Greater Manchester Police after receiving disgraceful abuse on the socially and morally repugnant social networking site Twitter.

One tweet, from the account of a complete imbecile named @johnwareing1, read:

"I hope Mark Halsey gets cancer again and dies"

Another, from fellow imbecile @lfcjohn259 read:

"Mark Halsey should’ve died of cancer"

On behalf of all reasonable Liverpool FC fans, I would like to sincerely apologise to Mr Halsey for this moronic, unacceptable behaviour. Not all Reds fans are cretinous halfwits like these Twitter fools, and I personally feel ashamed to see this kind of abuse. I really hope the Police can track these idiots down and find some way to charge them for breaching the Malicious Communications Act. It will be tough given the pathetic state of the law in this area, but where there's a will, there's a way.

I've said it many times before but I absolutely hate Twitter; it is not a force for good, freedom of speech or anything like that; it is a snivelling cesspit of faceless cyber bullies, stalkers, racists, nutcases and gutless cowards, and unless subjected to severe pressure, the unaccountable idiots that run the site point blank refuse to intervene or take action.

I know this because one particular gutless coward has been stalking/harassing me and my family on and offline for the last 2.5 years, and this idiot uses Twitter (amongst many other things) to spread false and defamatory lies about me and this site. Despite the obvious obsession and malicious intent, Twitter refuses to do anything about it.

High profile incidents of twitter racism, abuse, stalking and harassment are growing exponentially, which will hopefully force the company to change their policies. Failing that, world Governments should apply pressure to force Twitter to be more accountable. Failing that, I can't wait for the day when Anonymous, Lulz or some other hacker organisation takes Twitter down, or at least causes it some serious financial loss due to unscheduled downtime.

Anyway, Sorry Mr Halsey. You made some debatable decisions but only in a twisted alternate universe is that an excuse for this kind of abuse.

Jaimie Kanwar

  3. mark halsey next time you are back home, get to the old pub and i will buy you a drink to say sorry on behalf of those ignorant so called liverpool 'fans'. mark is a great lad who i have known for years, when he was a cabbie. he refd many of my sunday lge games (made some poor decisions then too!!!). most of his family still live near me and will be gutted by what has happened, quite rightly, i am disgusted. when i see him, i will b*llock him for his cock-ups.....and he will just call me what i am, a biased scouser!! those two fellas are vile sc*m, enough said.

  5. Good post, spot on

  6. disgracefull talk from a few fans, yes the ref made mistakes but it happens... remember wembley v arsenal fa cup? henchoz, hand ball?..we played well should of won....noone needs to stoop that low....noone..

  7. just discusting and over the top. he deserves to be critised for his poor performance but totally uncalled for, most of us have or will at some point be devasted by cancer.
it is unhumane, like the hundreds of scum united fans mocking the dead and showing no respect to the family or friends and people connected to the 96.

  8. There is nothing to apologize for. 2 morons on twitter do not represent the club.what referees have to understand is that when they referee games they are going to be abused if they get huge decisions wrong in huge games. In my opinion i find it seriously disturbing that refs are constantly favoring utd. Halsey had a terrible day giving that red card and the penalty but what can you do We have to get on with our football but the holes are showing in the team. In all honesty if liverpool want to get back in to the CL they have to spend at least 90 million on the RIGHT players not Downing, Carrol, Henderson(He will come good but for 20 mil we got ripped off) so those players add up to 75 mil. If we spend wisely we will be back but i dont see it happening soon.

  9. Good post mate, after such a difficult period for the families of the 96 and for the fans, any idiot making such a remark to anyone isn't called for and for me is no true LFC fan. Whether or not someone makes mistakes in a game of football making such vile comment about someone and his wife and family is no joke. Remember 96 ordinary people like you and me died watching they're favourite team play football it's a game at the end of the day, there's no call for them comments.

  11. An apology? Where the apology from Mark Halsey for his biased refereeing and corruption? He deserved all the abuse he got.

  12. Good post - as angry as I am at his mistakes, everyone makes them, especially those in high pressure, quick thinking professions like referreeing - and no one deserves that kind of abuse for such mistakes. End of the day - I'm sure he was trying to do a fair job, sometimes it just doesn't turn out that way.

    ReplyDelete
  13. so you think personal, vile taunts about cancer justify decisions from just a game?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agree with everything you've said, save that the decisions were worse than merely debatable.
I wouldn't want to ref even an U10's game - thankless task.
As regards Twitter, in many jurisdictions they would be liable for the posts - complain about them, not to them. They may well also be liable for publication of defamatory matter.
    Good luck.

  15. Halsey was the main factor in Liverpool's loss to Manchester Utd. His red card for Shelvey, his reluctance to show a red card to Evans for the same offense and (in a far clearer example of a two-footed tackle) to RVP, and the penalty that never was for Johnson's brilliant recovery of the ball. This of course is not to mention his failure to award the obvious penalty for the tackle to Suarez, with a more debatable second penalty possibly due for a tackle on Johnson, and a host of other decisions that can only suggest an inherent bias against Liverpool players.

At the same time, while criticism for unfair refereeing is justified, the actions of some fans in invoking Mark Halsey successful fight against one of the most dreadful diseases afflicting humanity today are simply beyond the pale. So bravo Jamie Kanwar for apologising on behalf of the majority of Liverpool fans who would never engage in such inhumane taunting of a fellow human being.

  16. while I whole heartedly agree with your article Mr Hasley's refereeing was there for the whole world to see. And I am from Singapore and I am trully surprised at some of his amateurish and 3rd world refereeing standard in the match! One of our local referee would have done a more impartial job of this match. It is a bad bad advertisement of the standard of EPL referees especially in a big match like this. The world has seen and taken note of the low standards of such referees like Hasley and who would probably go scott free of any action from a referee disciplinary committee. Even as he rightly reports the terrible abuse he has received on twitter, I personally think his refereeing in this match need to also be reported to a referee committee who should take a close look at the game he refereed and make a right decision on him, this for the sake and integrity of the EPL referees.

    ReplyDelete
  17. So do you think his decisions made on a game where two clubs came together for a tribute to the 96 wasn't worse than "taunts" about cancer which were just mere words? His actions actually brought actual harm to a club and it's fans and isn't just words that does nothing.

  18. Everyone makes them? Is this how it is now? Bad officiating should be berated, punished and reprimanded. Not tolerated and even defending the person that is guilty of it. How low the fans has fallen.

    ReplyDelete
  19. the game was too big for him he's a really poor referee

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wonderful comment. No referees should get away scott free after a performance like that. Inexcusable, human or not. They are professionals for a reason, and Halsey certainly didn't show that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. im from the philippines where football is steadily growing(im an lfc supporter since 2005 istanbul), we get carried on by emotions though how justifiable might it be. so disgusted by the ref -- utter crap...dont referees have match bans too? fa should look and review obvious officiating mistakes(or bias)...this cant go on..this is killing the sport..

apologies to halsey though...no one deserves such vile abuse...

  22. Halsey and his family were so upset by the tweets that the referees’ governing body, Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, will offer Halsey the chance to consult a psychologist

How about 1000's of liverpool fans, were upset by his stupid decisions. i am still gutted, who is going to consult me

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes he made some debatable decisions, but he doesn't deserve this kind of hatred.

Everyone makes mistakes, and he had a bad day. But it was just that a bad day and nothing else.

Please accept our apologies Mark Halsey, you don't deserve this.

  24. Agree with you up to a point , but of course there is nothing wrong
with social networking sites , its the morons who abuse them that are
to blame . As far as Halsey is concerned it will be interesting to see
how many games , he refs us for the rest of the season , would not
surprise me if we get him for most of our big games , that will be the
Utd run FA`s way of getting back at us

    ReplyDelete
  25. You sir, are a fuckwit.

It makes me sad that people use people like you to besmirch good people like myself, most of the people on here and Liverpool's world wide fanbase.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Reprimand him, eh? So that's what these brave crusaders were doing!

This is a good idea. Me and you, we'll present this to the FA. We'll march into Brian Barwick's office, or whichever twat is running that circle jerk nowadays, you'll lead the presentation (being the brains behind the great plan of course) and we'll show them our vision- organised bollockings, ahem, reprimanding, of refs.

Whenever they get something wrong, we'll wheel you out of a storage closet and set you on them.

The ref will leave the room inspired, naturally, and a better man for his lesson from you. He will never make a wrong decision again. After all, nothing inspires clarity of thought like fear.

Your shining influence will inspire many youngsters to take up refereeing, thus improving the overall level of officiating. Who could resist the chance for professorial types like you to shout at them about the worst moments in their life and wish death upon them?

Great idea man. Great, great idea.

  27. Here, here JK. I don't want anyone to think that our club stands with these kinds of eejit.

That said, it would be better if there was a legitimate element of accountability for referees in football.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hate him but to abuse about his cancer sickness is just sick from some people

    ReplyDelete
  29. what about manchester united fans (scum of the land) who chants ( always victims, its never your fault) right after the game ends, doesnt need and an apology to the world of football ... dears i hope Mark helsey and all man utd fans burn in hell ...

  30. It's understandable that in the heat of the moment, fans can get angry at wrong refereeing decisions, but after the match, when you can think and understand that referees have some of the toughest jobs in football, and they are only humans, it's just unacceptable to continue offending them, especially in the way he was.

  31. Liverpool are still suffering from the ill-fated fake 1989 verdict.Mark Halsey and many other referees are still punishing Liverpool because of this and some will take time to accept last week final verdict.I think The FA have to sit down with these referees and talk to them to be fair with Liverpool for our fans were not responsible for that strategy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jamie I have always suspected you being half Liverpool half ManU.In line with you I condemn such abuse but why havent you site the abusive nature of Halsey's officiating? Why havent you mention to him that its because of his in apt attitude against Liverpool that has caused these fans to behave a s such? Are you one sided Jamie?

    ReplyDelete
  33. but he got it wrong and cost us the match, infact he gave united the match
1.he should have sent off evans too,if shelvey was to go
2.he should have sent off van persie for the challenge on suso and who knows he would have been sent off and that would have changed the complexion of the game.
3.he denied suarez a clear penalty in front of the kop with the scores tied at 1-1 and that would have killed united as they scored when we were camped in their half through a counter attack.we were never camp in their half if we were leading and expose ourselves like that.we were camped there because we were looking for the winner
4.the penalty which they got should not have been and worse still after denying us a clear penalty and not sending off van persie earlier on.makes u think that he had an agenda hey.makes u think that in other circles he was on someone's payroll.
sometimes u wish he could die and u could kill him,but thats too far because its God Who gives and takes life.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tornike I understand your point but are these referees toughest job only against Liverpool?I believe Liverpool are still suffering from the ill-fated fake 1989 verdict.Mark Halsey and many other referees are still punishing Liverpool because of this and some will take time to accept last week final verdict.I think The FA have to sit down with these referees and talk to them to be fair with Liverpool for our fans were not responsible for that strategy.

  35. If anyone deserves abuse its probably the FA Halsey should be refereeeing u/10 football from now on a performance he should not be getting paid for.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The tweet is beyond human decency. But I also feel Halsey should apologize to LFC for his poor refereeing at crucial times has caused blatant injustice to Liverpool players and LFC.Howard and Halsey should not be selected for matches involving Liverpool especially MU v Liverpool in future and I hope the FA will look seriously into it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ironic how you support the memory of 96 people who died, yet you encourage people to wish death upon someone. All because of a fucking game of football. There was no be all and end all harm done to the club, and no harm done to fans, conversely to your deluded, imaginative thinking.

  38. In your dream Zul, The FA and PMGO Ltd are managing by Man U. cronies.
90 % of ref are biased to Man U

  41. Vermhat - Sorry you had to put with abuse from that idiot. He's now banned.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Half LFC half Man U? With respect, don't be so ridiculous. If you actually read my posts properly you will see that I've agreed that Halsey got decisions wrong. I just don't hurl insults and go on about conspiracy theories like you and others. Just look at your description: 'abusive nature' of refereeing. Seriously, if you see refereeing like that then you're taking things way too seriously. Just because I don't have the same views as the majority doesn't mean I'm 'one-sided'. Plus, I never miss an opportunity to stick the knife into United (see my Gary Neville post from yesterday)

  43. twitter is for cowards and bullies, who cares if your having a dump or picking your nose,

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree that the tweets are beneath contempt and those responsible should be held accountable. However so should Halsey. What I find annoying is that he gets the decisions so completely wrong and they are so clearly to the benefit of MU and detriment of LFC but he doesn't apologise, he doesn't get demoted to the Championship for a week. If the decisions were reversed then he would be issuing apologies and he would have been punished with a week in the lower division. I have no problem with the fact that we all make mistakes and have bad days - but when we do we suffer consequences. The (lack of) response to his terrible decisions is unacceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  45. he made a mistake but there is no reason to send messages like that about him. we should of put the game to bed long before the sending off anyway.
This has reminded me of my youth when a lad got sent off about 20 years ago playing sunday leugue up by old swan in liverpool. He got sent off, went straight to his car and chased the ref, to be fair I was only young and laughed, thank god the ref was middle aged and not one of them nasy old fuckers who used to occupy the centre circle for 90 mins and give you yellows for anything, otherwise he would have been flattened!!! that was a funny day!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that guy still refs who stands in the centre circle isnt he called Howard Webb.
I agree i have posted all week if the chances are not put away you dont win. Same as I said to my Everton mates bleating about the linesman v Newcastle, they had enough chances to win 5 games before that happened. You dont score you dont win.

  47. Actual death and wishing something that will not happen are totally different things.

What if Halsey is a biased devil? Wouldn't that make it he gets what he deserves? It is obvious he didn't make mistakes, he wanted to give the match to United. The "penalty" was in his view in front of him, yet he saw a touch? He is disgusting. He should have learned from his adventure to be a better person.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is a totally screwed way of interpreting this situation. Death is something that WILL happen. However, it is in many aspects a terrible thing, and wishing it upon an innocent man is evil

    ReplyDelete
  50. Innocent man? Halsey is a cheat and a corrupt after his performance. Funny of you to side with a demon who had driven a knife to the heart of your team. I will never forgive him and wish all the worst on him.

    ReplyDelete
  51. And also, I meant that he certainly won't suddenly get cancer and dies just because someone else wished it on him. And who are you to berate fellows fans, you certainly felt the same anguish as them and THOUSANDS of fans around the world when Halsey dealt such injustice on YOUR team. It's definitely a million times more painful than what Halsey felt.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ban me if you want, it's just mind boggling that fans would rather side with a man that dealt so much harm onto the club they love rather than to side with one of their own, however wrong they were. It's like Christians supporting Satan.
