'I was ready to sign!' - LFC Hero admits he almost joined Manchester United...

Former Liverpool defender Glen Hysen has revealed that he almost signed for Manchester United in 1989.

In an interview with LFC Magazine, Hysen - who played an integral role in helping Liverpool win the league title in 1990 - explained:

"Manchester United wanted me before Liverpool.

"In 1989, I flew there and met with Martin Edwards, Alex Ferguson and Bryan Robson.

"I was ready to sign, but there was mix-up with the contact with Fiorentina, and everything broke down.

"Within two weeks, Liverpool came to see me in Gothenburg. Discussions lasted 10 minutes and I signed. Peter Robinson and John Smith arranged the deal.

"It was a good offer, but it was also simple"

Clearly, if it hadn't been for the contact 'mix-up', Hysen would've joined United, and he would've been happy to do so.

At the time of his signing, Hysen was the captain of the Swedish national team, and when France Football announced their Golden Ball winner in 1987, he'd been voted one of the ten best players in Europe.

I remember watching Hysen regularly in the 1989-90 season, and he was imperious in most of the games. Cool and calm on the ball; good distribution, and rarely made serious mistakes.

Indeed, with only 37 goals conceded, Liverpool had the best defensive record in the league that season, which is a testament to Hysen's impact at the club.

Meanwhile, United finished 13th, conceding 47 goals along the way. Alas, how times have changed...

  4. The author is entitled to his opinion but in my view, there's more chance of Bill Shankly rising from the dead and returning to the Anfield hotseat than LFC getting relegated.
The points raused are valid but there are equally valid counter arguments. Plhs, he completely ignores the rise of the club's young players, and they will ppay a big part this season.
    Relegated? Nonsense. Top 8 easily.

  7. Rubbish... You chose Liverpool then, no way it was because of a contract dispute... Sir Alex and Martin Edward even went back to Fiorentina when the transfer wasn't materialised... There was a time for you to settle the dispute and then signed for United... It wasn't because you chose Liverpool over us... And I can understand your decision back then... Liverpool was the more succesfull between the two clubs... But to blame your decision to join Liverpool on a contract mix up is not true... Anyway, I think you were just saying this in a time where we have been successfull for so many season... If liverpool is still the most successfull club I bet you wouldn't say a thing about it... By the way, you are one hell of a player but you are no Gary Pallister...
