'We'll sell!' - Boss admits 28-goal Reds target 'wishes to leave'. Next stop LFC?

After months of speculation, Fulham have finally confirmed officially that prolific goalscoring midfielder Clint Dempsey wants to leave the club.

In a club statement via the club's official Twitter feed about half an hour ago, Fulham stated:

"Martin Jol confirms Clint Dempsey wishes to leave the Club".

During his pre-match press conference a few minutes ago, Fulham Boss Martin Jol added:

"If we get the right price for Clint we will sell him. If not, he will stay"

Fulham confirm Dempsey sale

With 28 goals and 7 assists in all competitions for (for Fulham and the USA), Dempsey's record last season is very impressive, and the American scored/created more goals last year than Downing, Henderson, Adam, Shelvey, Kuyt, and Maxi combined (!)

Given his experience in the Premier League, I'm sure £10m-rated Dempsey could replicate his creative exploits for Liverpool, but I doubt the Fulham will accept a paltry £5m for him, a dubious figure currently being reported by the press.

Additionally, as an attacking midfielder capable of playing on the right or the left, Dempsey would work well as part of an attacking front three, e.g.

----------------- Borini

Dempsey --------------------- Suarez

(With Dempsey and Suarez alternating)

I would absolutely love it if LFC signed Dempsey. Forget his age, he is in top shape, and would bring some much needed steel and fighting spirit to the squad. Additionally, Dempsey brings goals from midfield, something the club desperately needs.

LFC's transfer business so far has top notch, and Dempsey would be the icing on the cake. Exciting times!

  1. Bad news for Carroll, but good news for LFC fans.

  2. We don't need another old fart! What's the point with him? One good season is not going to transform him in to a world beater. Stick with Big Andy and he'll prove you all wrong!

  3. Carroll stays and will ,have best season ever

  4. superb signing, but i wud still keep carroll he provides options, still young and must fight this signing  is what carroll probably needs.sell adam

  5. He is going to be a squad player like Bellamy if we sign him.

  6. $10m?? you must be kidding, Jol. RvP only cost manu 24m, a true prolific striker, for Clint Dempsey just take Adam and the $5m already a good price.

  7. We may yet miss out on Sarin but gain Dempsey instead....in which case Carroll would probably stay....we are still `light`in the strikers department,so we`ll need depth there if we have a resonably successful Europa, domestic cups and EPL season.

I have always said his age flies against LFC policy of young players, but we now have numerous youngsters coming through over the next few years, so maybe a player for the now would make sense.
Also when you look at pound notes per goal he certainly makes more business sensethan Van Persie, who is the same age, although he has only achieved this goal tally last season following 3 to 4 years in the Premiership ?
I do get the impression though that we would need to sell before we spend that kind of Money.
Adam + £ sounds good to me ?!

  9. Squad player?  I think not.  Downing will become a squad player (IMO) if Dempsey signs.  He'd be first choice wide left, sharing the spot with Assaidi, with Downing hopefully playing the same role he played for England during Euro 2012.

  10. Dempsey..is the missing link in BR tiki-taka style..and a trio comprising of Borini..Suarez and Dempsey..is just a terrific recipe..backed by Gerrard, Allen, Lucas and the fantastic 4 at the back..Johnson, Skrtel, Agger and Enrique..complemented by tactical options..like Sterling, Oussama, Sahin, Shelvey, Downing, Hendo and Kelly..makes LFC a very homogeneous & competitive team..

  11. Buy Dempsey. Keep Carroll. Four frontmen to choose from. Excellent depth. And the likes of Gerrard, Lucas and Allen sitting in behind them with both full backs also pressing forward.

Bring it on and let's just see what happens

  12. Why would Liverpool pay £10 million for a player who will be free next summer? Probably could get him for £500,000 by January. Moreover he is already reaching 30 years of age. If the player has already indicated he wants to leave, there is no point in keeping him. He is definitely not going to give you his 100% and will be disruptive to team spirit. So Brandan can wait until the last day of transfer and wait for Martin Jol to beg Brandan to take the player for £2 million. Just because old whiskey nose paid £20 million to Arse for Van Persie, it is not the bench mark for other players and for clubs to demand high transfer fee. If Brandan can bring in Sahin on loan from Real, there is no need for Demsey.

Need to keep Carrol - option B
"ticki tacki" doesn't work every match especially in the Premiership !

  15. I would love to see this happen, a wise head up front that can score goals, just what we need! If we get Sarin to then we have a great team to head into he new season with and I generally believe we will be able to get champions league spot

  16. How about we keep Carroll and Dempsey. If Carroll doesn't adapt, then flick him off. I feel uncomfortable with just assuming he doesn't know how to integrate into Rodgers' rhythm of play.

We will get sweet FA for him at the present but give him another season to mature, learn (he is still young) and improve his form and his asking price will rise.
Yes we did pay 35 for him (Newcastle laughed all the way to the bank !), but like a share value, when it's at it's lowest the price can only go one way.

My point exactly, we kept Heskey for years and look how many goals he didn't score !
Give Carrol at least another year and if he hasn't inproved, then off load him whilst he is still in the middle of his contract.
We could use his transfer fee now, but who are we going to get for the quoted 17mil ? when we don't have Champ League footy ?
If we reach the top four by the end of this season then sell him and buy then !!

  20. Liverpool have played this beautifully. Bringing in Assaidi and (presumably) Sahin there's no great demand for Dempsey any more, which clearly terrifies Jol who has a stubbornly wantaway player. Unless another club swoops in now, Liverpool have all the cards. Funny to think, if Fulham now allow Dempsey to leave for, say, £7m, that £3m for Assaidi has immediately paid for itself and we'll have one of the top 5 players of last season at his peak.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lucas was awful in his first season at Liverpool and look what a player he turned out to be. Skrtel was poor in his first season whilst Agger barely set the world on fire. The point I'm trying to make Jaimie is Downing and Carroll need a bit more time before we write them off just like the players I mentioned before got. If after another season they are still playing poorly we sell them on.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Clint Dempsey is worth paying a little over the odds for but Liverpool only like to overpay for crappy players.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hopefully Fulham will take Adam in part exchange for Dempsey.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i like your view but we could sell hendo too..he is just a waste he can't play at anfield..he should try diff team thou..

    ReplyDelete
  25. Downing will never make it at lfc, never rated him and after 10 years in the premier league you'd expect better at 28. The others are young and u can say are going through a development period. However another poor season then some could be off. If we get a decent winger this month then downing will be struggling to start every game.

  26. not when he doesn't play

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jamie I'm slightly confused by your opinion. When skytle allegingly through his agent hinted he would leave you said we should sell him for being disloyal yet Dempsey has done far worse yet you suggest we should sign him. How does that work? I will be delighted if he signs cus he is a good player the rest is football politics and the sooner you understand that then you will start to stop slagging off half our team.

    ReplyDelete
  28. sign him up.
borini and allen are both in their early twenties,we've lost alot of experience with kuyt/maxi/bellamy all leaving and dempsey is a very good player who could play in a few different positions for us.
the fact that jol has confirmed he wants to leave is only good news for us,the longer we leave it the less we'll have to pay.

  29. completely agree.

  30.  "Most managers have a way of playing and a
Plan A in terms of the way they want to play.I will always try to make
Plan A better before I go to Plan B. If trying to make Plan A better
doesn't work then we go to Plan B and then probably Plan C."anyone else read this from rodgers? to me it sounds like it's aimed at carroll.

  31. Is this a joke?

You constantly bemoan the lack of loyalty in football and slag off our players for even responding to transfer rumours but you want us to sign Dempsey, a man who has just been fined by his club for refusing to play this weekend to force through a move?

    *shakes head*

  32. Not happening Liverpool echo recons we're not interested. Not willing to pay the fee!

  33. gamesmanship.have you noticed the article strangely has no journalists name attached? someone at lfc is being clever i reckon.we know dempsey wants to sign, jol is panicing by the sounds of it and we'll get a very good deal.

  34. Just as much i was unimpressed last season with the transfer business, this season i am that much impressed by Rodgers dealings so far in this transfer market and love the fact that Liverpool have bought technically good players. If Liverpool can add Sahin and even Dempsey then it would be a best transfer business the club has conducted in long long time. I am really hopeful for this season and i believe top 4 is still a realistic target to achieve and the way Liverpool's squad is shaping up right now has made me much more excited about Liverpool's prospects this season.

  35. I now agree that the club is better off selling Carroll right and cutting its losses.

I still think that he may become a very good player eventually, but it's not going to happen any time soon, or with him being a bit part player for us, and as such he's worth more to us in the transfer fee that can be generated to bring in a better alternative, rather than in having him on the bench every week.

There's no point in holding onto a £20m asset if he's only going to be equivalent to a -£10m bench player for us, especially when we're in the position that we desperately need funds to rebuild the team.

  36. Having lost Gaston Ramirez to premiere league newbies Southhampton it is imperative that we make this signing. Dempsey may be 29 but he comes with a lot of priceless experience. He is only the third highest scorer of goals last season in all competitions behind teammates, Rooney and Van Persie. It is a case in which the pros easily out weigh the cons. I see this as a no brainer really.

Rodgers sometimes in my humble opinion  can be  more complicated than a woman . I love this manager and i love the new philosophy about foot-ball but for the love  of me can't figure why it's taking so long to wrap up the Dempsey deal. He had already announced to the media that he was interested in the player. In fact he had even got FSG so excited about Dempsey and his huge goal haul from last season that the company stated on it's website that Clint Dempsey was already a Liverpool player. It turned out to be inaccurate and the statement was later removed from the website. What does Rodgers hope to gain by messing with a players head? He has been linked to Dempsey for quite a long time now. To me the Allen deal was more complicated a deal but Rodgers was aggressive in his pursuit of Allen. He didn't care that he was breaking a written agreement not to poach players from his former club. He paid the penalty which usually always just comes down to money anyway and Allan became a red. So i don't know why he would stall on Dempsey deal when everybody knows from last season what Dempsey is capable of .

Having scored that many goals on a team like Fulham in my opinion this  makes Dempsey a stand out talent indeed . If i were manager i would rush out get his signature.

IF Liverpool had indeed suddenly had a change of heart then it would explain why he is stalling on this deal. I think that Rodgers is a slippery character indeed . He is one person who is well versed in the art of misdirection. He may have decided to look elsewhere and failed to let the player and his representatives know. Clint is left holding the bag as he believes that he would hear one way or another from the club, but Rodgers and Liverpool stay silent. Seems like the joke was on Dempsey.  If some of the latest reports are true then it would appear that Liverpool will no longer pursue him. I don't want to believe everything i read but an article in the "Liverpool echo" dated August 17th, 2012 titled "Clint Dempsey fined for refusing to play for Fulham but Liverpool FC not interested in signing him."  says it all in black and white. I think this would explain why the deal is taking so long. Feel free to check it out online at www.liverpooecho.co.uk. Yesterday Brendan Rodgers welcomed Oussama Assaidi a winger from Hereveen to the club. While i am not an expert in the protocol of negotiation process that goes one between clubs I feel that we could have handled the Dempsey deal better. Dempsey has now been fined as he refuses to practice with the club as he waits to hear from Liverpool.

  37. Agger was bought as a kid and was solid from day one, while Skrtel was poor for a good while and lucky to still be at Liverpool to finally come good last season tbh.

It's all well and good everybody continually pointing at Lucas coming good after several seasons, but during those years when he wasn't of the required standard but still starting every week, the club suffered terribly.

I don't want to go through that again tbh, no matter how good the player eventually becomes. And at 28, it's very doubtful that Downing is going to ever become much better than he has shown himself to be previously anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  38.  no matter how much people think he's improved or what kind of impact he may have from the bench i think it's blatantly obvious that Rodgers doesn't rate him.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I wouldn't buy for any more than £4-6m, given his age and contract situation.  He's a good player and would be a very useful option, but I wouldn't go over the top to sign him.

    ReplyDelete
  40. rodgers isn't going to keep carroll on the bench to throw on for ten mins at the end of games, what's the point? he clearly doesn't rate him and is a firm believer in the style of football he wants to play so 'plan b' doesn't really enter the equation for him.if it did why not sign heskey on a free if we are going for a lumbering big man who is goal shy?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I totally agree, the guy will be under even more pressure as sterling and co will be fight for that position. No chance lost cause for lfc im afraid, sell him before his value drops any further.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thats right, bench warmer!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lovely to see a swap deal with downing & adam going to fulham.

    ReplyDelete
  44. no role for sterling then. or suso. we should not be signing 29 year old average players.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes, because average players get 23 goals and 6 assists in the Premier League.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Don't get me wrong pal I'm a massive fan of Agger but he didn't look great at the start. So much so that he didn't even make the squad for the final against West Ham. I just think we should give some of these lads a bit more time before consigning them to the scrap heap.

With BR playing pressing n pace game...i think we need lot player in mid area...coz lot player will getting tired even injured...no doubt this style is fun to watch but oso concern me fitness prob...so i vote bring in more mid player just in case

  48. why not sign kevin mirallas....he's definitely better than dempsey.watched some of his videos on youtube.he fits perfect in the brendan rodgers system.front three of assaidi-suarez-mirallas will be terrific.why pay double the sum for an ageing player.season after season liverpool tend to buy shite central and attackin midfilders. never managed to get a grip of as to why they r nt buying quality wingers.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Totally agree, BR signed Assaidi who was actually Fulham's replacement for Dempsey, I personally like Assaidi over Dempsey though in saying that bringing in a veteran can be a good thing. Most of our squad is now very young so Dempsey would be great for 2-3 seasons then we have ample cover up on the wings Steirling, Borini, Pacheco and Assaidi and up front with Suarez and Morgan then when were back up the table we'll be able to get another world eating striker to keep Suarez company.
Don't like paying 10M for him though if we can do Adam +3M it would be worth it, then we just need to off load Cole and we'd be looking real good.
