After the failure of Stewart Downing last season, Liverpool clearly need one or two new wide players to pick up the slack, and according to renowned Portuguese newspaper Jornal Record, the Reds are 'closely following' Porto winger Christian Atsu.
Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly interested in the €10m-rated Ghanaian, who was brought into the Porto first team during Andre Villas-Boas' reign at the Estadio do Dragao.
Former Leeds striker Tony Yeboah - who once scored an amazing goal against Liverpool at Elland Road - has urged the youngster to consider a move to the Premier League. He told Pravda Sports:
"I'm not sure which clubs are interested in Atsu, but looking at his talent, I have no doubt that he could shine in the Premier League. I think he can achieve everything he wants to achieve in English football"
Atsu is reguarlaly labelled the 'Ghanaian Messi', but it's not a nickname he cares for, as he told Ghanasoccernet.com:
"That tag ‘Messi’ doesn’t put any pressure on me but I will tell Ghanaians to respect that name and stop putting it on me because I am Christian Atsu"
Atsu recently revealed a long-term goal to play in the Premier League:
"I want to become a really useful player for the Black Stars and win the Champions League with my club and also to play in the Spanish or English league. This is what I really want to achieve"
He certainly looks the part, but it if Brendan Rodgers recent comments are anything to go by, it looks like Downing will be part of his plans next season:
"I remember seeing him against Chelsea at the end of last season after the Cup final and he was outstanding. He played on the right side and he can go either way. His right foot is good as well. I like my wingers to attack and be offensive, and Stewart is one of those. He can really affect things"
Rodgers also gave Andy Carroll a public vote of confidence, but as we've seen, he's privately trying to offload the striker. Hopefully, the same applies to Downing.

For the record this is the 18,592nd player you've linked us with this close season and then gone on to suggest we buy them.
ReplyDeleteBizarre!
I also say "I am not messi!"
ReplyDeleteJamie, I don't agree with your stance regarding Downing. As long as the player belongs to Liverpool one should support the player. After all, even if you dislike him, criticizing players only helps to indirectly lower the value of the player.
ReplyDeletewhy are we looking yet again for a winger to replace downing, we allready have one in sterling for gods sake play the lad before we someone takes him off us
ReplyDeleteAre you an idiot? Downing cost us 20 MILLION! and provided no assists and no goals last season. Jaimie hit the nail on the head. We are LFC we should expect better!!!
ReplyDeleteAgree with you on that one!
ReplyDeleteJaimie keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteIt's not bizarre at all. First, I report all legitimate LFC transfer stories (i.e. those that contain direct quotes about potential moves) - that is what news providers do. Second, I did not suggest LFC buy him - I just post the info and people can make their own decision. Read the article properly or don't bother commenting at all. Plus, if you have nothing more to add than sniping then please go elsewhere.
ReplyDeletenice way to make people to read your article
ReplyDeleteSurely Downing is currently one of the best players in the Premiership after last nights wonder goal! I wouldnt trade him for anyone. /Sarcasm.
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, I dont think Rodgers will sell Downing, even though he probably should.
Obvioulsy I meant wont sell not will sell.....
ReplyDeletedowning was never good enough for liverpool, the price tag was not his fault, but he should be moved on...
ReplyDeleteInteresting player...
ReplyDeleteWell said, we have lowered our expectations and brought in players who are not going to improve us in the league....bread and butter!! Sterling has shown more promise in a handful of games then downing has done all season. If we are to progress we need confident and talented wingers. No time for lightweights or settling in periods, hence why they are paid silly money to play in a COMPETITIVE PREMIER LEAGUE!!!
ReplyDeletedont know about 1 player we need loads - we where dire last night. felt sorry for gomel .... we literally stole the game from them. THEFT ! sg/midfield was shocking it saddens me to say this but it was painful to watch. how rogers can be proud of that i dont know , demolished by nobodies .
ReplyDeleteAnother well known player of high pedigree!
ReplyDeleteWhat transfer strategy is this? surely we need QUALITY not quantity. I have seen nothing yet to suggest we will improve on last year.
Is it true that AVB & Martinez turned us down because there was no transfer budget & Rogers went along with anything as he was just happy to get the job?
We have lost 3 experienced quality international leave and appear to be replacing them with nobodies!
if dan agger leaves for less than 25m somebody needs to lose there job at liverpool
ReplyDeleteYou wont get 25M for a 27 yr old with an injury hit record. We will be lucky to get 17M IMO.
ReplyDeleteProblem would be how do we replace him?
Despite the various shortcomings of the players who have left they still were quality players. Apart from Spurs and City above us all the other teams have improved!
Not just SD but it looks like we will have to put up with J Spearing, Ch Adam and J Henderson for another season. God help LFC.
ReplyDeleteIt would surely be Ian Ayre next, after all he is the last man standing from the cull at the end of last season. Commolli s supper quick with his transfer dealings and paid silly money for the likes of Carroll, Downing, Hendson and Adam. Should have bought all at a combine total of £20 million instead of the £75 million paid out. Now we have Ian Ayre protecting his backside and taking it a long time to complete the transfers. Won't be surprised if no morevplayers are signed before window closes. Stories of this player and that player coming or close to signing is all soap opera by the club to fool fans. Kuyt, Maxi and Aqualani have left and only Borini is signed for £10 million. That is the budget for this window. Any new player will only come in if Carroll, , Bellers or Skertle leaves. How do you compete for top four with a team devoit of world class players, when all the top teams have strengthened their teams with star buys. Suarez will leave now if a top team in the world makes a bid for him.
ReplyDeleteagreed
ReplyDeletemade sense the first time
ReplyDeletewith Suarez playing for Liverpool this guy wont come.
ReplyDeletemaybe because they came through a storm still kept trying and all look like they have smoked to many fags eaten to many big dinners and drank to many beers, let them get fit and try to get the new style of play then say how crap they are as for SG hes only been back about a week! give everything a couple of months and we will improve! it has to, everything is just feeling better I've just got a feeling things are going to come good. as for players out i think he's pretty much finished maybe Adam if he doesn't keep him as a last resort backup, its all about who's coming in now
ReplyDeleteI doubt AVG and matinez turned us down for that, also I think BR saw something in all the players and thought he could get it to work without major changes, as for AVB he's just a douche, he had a ready made team at CFC and screwed it all up so needs to buy the ready made rather than build a player up, he's already looking stupid at Tottenham, i think spurs are going to have their bad season this year
ReplyDeleteDowning is pure sh@te, always has been, always will be!!!
ReplyDeleteHe must wake up thinking fu@k me I was lucky to get to Villa.... But he'll I'm at LFC, it's like winning every lottery going..
For those who support him he's not a regular international, don't see Barca, Real, Bayern, Juve, Milan... Or lesser sides who like players with ability such as Lyon, Ajax, Valencia, Marseille, Porto etc etc ever being interested in him.. He has been cr@p yet there has been no interest from any team trying to get him on cheap- because he is Sh!t... Ther is interest in Aggrr, Suarez, Skrtel, even Sterling but nobody wants Adam Or DOWNING... Wake up dumb people.
spot on Gary352. i wont wnat to play at Klu Klux Klanfield myself
ReplyDeleteLiverpool are such a sorry team. Just sell the entire team and start over Rodgers
ReplyDeleteI agreee with Gary352. No-one wants to play at Klu Klux Klanfield anymore. Sad but true.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool need a total revamp
ReplyDeleteLiverpool are now known as Klanfield after the KKK club
ReplyDeleteI'd add Spearing to that list as well, just not good enough for LFC, but we still persist with theses type of players and people wonder why we have gone backwards in the league.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is no-one will pay decent money for spearing or downing...in return we would have to pay someone to take them off us.....
oh..he surely is good enough for the 8th placd team and the carling cup winners..!
ReplyDeleteMate, there's no need for that!
