Rumours persist over the future of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, with Manchester City reportedly pulling out all the stops in their ongoing attempt to sign him. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted earlier in the week that every LFC player has a price, and if a club were to offer 'ridiculous money' for Agger, he may be allowed to leave. Liverpool legend Steve Nicol is not happy with that kind of thinking though, and he's urged the club not to sell Agger.
Discussing the Agger speculation on ESPN a couple of days ago, Nicol said:
"Daniel Agger owes Liverpool big time.
"He's been at the club for six years, and he's been injured for 3.5 of those years.
"They [Liverpool] better not sell him because that would be a huge hole at the back".
Nicol is absolutely right about Agger 'owing' Liverpool. The Dane has spent two years of his Anfield career on the treatment table so far, missing 191 games along the way:
Having said that, it doesn't appear to be Agger pushing for a move, though things could be different behind the scenes.

Agger's class, the only reason to sell him would be to raise cash and get in a cheaper (probably inferior). Must keep him, specially from shitty. The fans at Anfield thursday night, let the club know their feelings, by chanting Aggers name, hope he stays. YNWA.
ReplyDeleteIf Agger is pushing for a move then he is conducting himself in a commendable manner. That said, It doesn't look like he is trying to leave.
ReplyDeleteAgger doesn't owe Liverpool anything, he signed a contract to play, that's all, if he's injured it's tough. Stewart Downing was injured a lot for Aston Villa before we signed him, so should we have bought him because he 'owed them'?
ReplyDeleteCan we not panic!
ReplyDeleteIs Steve Nicol the angriest man of all time or what?
ReplyDeleteKeep him, we don't need to sell, we already got rid of aqulani, bellamy, maxi, kuyt, aurelio that's nearly 500 thousand a week off a wages.. Now we got allen on 45 thousand. Now get rid of adam then we will be fine :) excited for the new season :)
ReplyDeleteBR was flying a kite to see how much City would pay, Agger has made it clear he loves Liverpool. If a monster offer comes in we would have to consider it, 20m + Adam Johnson might do it???. Coates, Sama and Carra are all ready to play but i feel Agger will not move on at all.
ReplyDeleteagger is not for sale fuck city and others
ReplyDeleteagger is not for sale city and others fuck off
ReplyDeleteLol. Spot on mate
ReplyDeletehope we don't sell but a bid of 20mil or more has to be tempting to rodgers for a player who is so injury prone.
ReplyDeleteIf a good offer comes!!!? dont really like that line look where we got when a good offer came for Xabi ,Torres and Yossi lets keep the ones we trust no matter what we sell high n still buy high and overrated whats the point we are not a selling club no matter how you look at it we still bigger than city so they should be the ones selling the best players to LFC not the other way round just 3 seasons n think there bigger than us we should get back where we belong at the top so we need to keep our very best cant stand loosing another good player after watching Owen,Xabi,Garcia,Maserano,Yossi and Torres no longer @ Anfield
ReplyDeleteDidn't he get YNWA tattoed on the fingers of his right hand recently? It would be an odd thing to do if he were contemplating a move elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a shame to lose him, he's not been quoted as saying he wants to leave. The only reason it's an issue is that City wants him and made a bid. Looking forward to him staying healthy and being a big part of getting us back into the Champion's League!
ReplyDeleteNicol comes out with crap than any other Liverpool pundit. Just embarrassing stuff.
ReplyDelete*more than
ReplyDeleteHe's come out and said that he loves running his restaurant business and he very much set in life and that he wants to stay.
ReplyDeleteAn injury plagued central defender who in 6 years has played less than half of the teams fixtures and is due a new bumper contract. Also after that contract will have zero sell on value. Injuries or no injuries. Wheres the value in that???
ReplyDeleteI like Agger and I'm not advocating for his sale. However, I can see the logic behind his possible sale.
Not sure why this is being talked about, except that Rodgers won't lay the matter to rest. If Agger doesn't want to leave, Rodgers doesn't want to sell and with Liverpool 'apparently' not having to sell in order to buy, why doesn't Rodgers just say that Agger is not for sale at any price?
ReplyDeleteAgger is exactly the sort of player Rodgers would be looking to buy if he was in the market for a centre back, now that he has him, why sell? He should be looking to move players like Adam and Spearing on first. Unfortunately, these players would not command the sort of transfer fee that Agger does.
I agree ...
ReplyDeleteI'm also confused at the panic statements about leaving a hole at the back, for 3.5 years of the 6 years, we have had a hole at the back when he has been injured. So can't really see how that is a valid argument.
Also he is after a new contract, I can't see the sense in offering him a new improved contract, if he leaves the team weaker half the time, that is no way to build for the future. If he wants to stay, extend his present contract as it stands... but I can't see that happening.
So lets take aside liking or disliking, is he value for money, not consistently and we know consistence is the requirement for success. So the real question is do we want success or do we want to keep players because we like them and sometimes they are great ...
Agree with you SuaRed, if he wants to stay because he loves the club, I'd be pleased for him to stay on his present contract terms extended, does he warrant a bumper contract increase, based on his availability, the common sense answer is no... and I think this is were the issues are, Agger wants to stay but wants a last big contract, LFC want him to stay but don't believe a big last contract extension is realistic for a part time player ... difficult one for both parties but I'm going to fully back LFC on this one and if it means we sell Agger because his demands are unreasonable, then so be it!
I want success and if that creates wealthy players, fine, but I'm not happy players are becoming wealth without the success and they don't play half the time.
But aggers a lfc fan
ReplyDeletenope
ReplyDeleteI agree abso
ReplyDeleteIts to show lfc respect for the last time as FSG/Doggers are him out.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think Agger is a class CB - but, yes, he's often not there 'cos of injuries. So, sentiment aside if we were offered 18+ mil + A Johnson (and we are after a proven RM), it makes perfect sense. But if they offer 15 million - it would be better to gamble on his fitness. It's simple really.
ReplyDeleteThe figures are misleading you only need to go back a couple of seasons and watch his apps and not 7-5 years ago.
ReplyDeleteIndeed.. and way too many articles based on Steve Nicol comments on this site .. Is the author on commisson for publishing his comments one wonders ?? LOL

The panic is because in the past Carra or Skrtel would step in for him, but as is sadly obvious time has caught up with Carra and we don't appear to have found and blooded his replacement. The hole is going to be bigger than it has been previously.
ReplyDeletedont know why were not interested in van persie if we are selling carroll then we should buy van persie to replace him instead of man utd getting him just my opinion
ReplyDeleteto say he owed liverpool is unnessacary nd if i were bim and i read that i would be livid he loves the club doesnt want to leave the club want the money there was no need to say he owes the club
ReplyDeleteI think Agger wants a better contract and his agent is privately urging Man City to make an offer to encourage a better contract offer from Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteThe YNWA tattoo surely states his position. Conspiracy theorists may suggest he is trying to endear himself to Liverpool fans before his impending move.
Agger doesn't "owe" Liverpool any more than Liverpool "owe" him a better contract.
We would be crazy to let him go. £25 million is great alright but how do we replace him? Remember Alonso and Torres. £80 million for the two of them and we turned it into Aqua, Carroll plus c. £27 million.
Rodgers said he needs a playmaker at centre half and there's not many better than Agger.
Was thinking the same. **STOP PRESS** 'STEVE NICOL SAYS SOMETHING CONTROVERSIAL'. Yawn. He's like an embarrasing uncle who cant stop insulting people after too many christmas sherrys.
ReplyDeleteWrong, we are a selling club and have been for sometime.
ReplyDeletewhy would he leave Arsenal-champs league for us no-champs league and no money.
ReplyDeleteI dont want AGGER to go. But 25million for an injury prone player, who is 27yrs old....Its a good deal that should not be refused. I believe AGGER will stay though.
ReplyDeleteI think it stands to reason that if we were made a offer of £25+mil, i dont think to many fans would be up in arms if we were to accept it. Thats what Brendan is talking about and if we read the statement we will find that he does not single out Agger but indead says every player has their price, and therefore if a team comes in with a price that far exceeds the value of any of our players then the club will be willing to sell. That is not saying we want to or need to sell any players its saying nobodys for sale but everyone has there price.
ReplyDeleteGood Point
ReplyDeleteAccording to Mancine, Brian Marwood has refused to pursue with the transfer on an improved bid. Dagger stays.
ReplyDeleteif you think so then its time to stop cauce we getting weaker and making others stronger
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen anything to suggest that Agger is trying to leverage LFC into offering him an improved contract now (as opposed to Skrtel for example).
ReplyDeleteI wholly agree with the rest of what you said though.
