£9m star to LFC? Brendan Rodgers responds to 'El Loco' transfer rumours...

The Agent of Liverpool target Juan Manuel Vargas - nicknamed 'El Loco' in Italy - confirmed last month that the Reds were tracking the Fiorentina star, and in his press conference on Friday, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers directly addressed speculation linking the club with a move for the Preuvian winger.

During the press conference at Melwood, Rodgers was asked: "Are you interested in signing Fiorentina's Juan Manuel Vargas?"

The Northern Irishman's response was typically cryptic, but the important point is that he didn't deny the interest, or rule out a potential transfer. He said:

"Certainly, the intention is to bring in a few more players yet. We've been linked with an incredible amount of players, and I've got to be honest, some of them I've never even heard of!

"I'm very reluctant to speak about players from other clubs; I know we have a lot of work to do here to improve the squad, there's no question about that".

Make of that what you will.

At the end of July, Vargas' Agent - Jorge Cyterszpiler - admitted that there was 'possibility that Vargas will leave Fiorentina', and confirmed that Liverpool were tracking the Peruvian international. He said:

"Liverpool is an option, but there is also Malaga that has the fascination of playing in next season's Champions League.

"He didn't have the best of seasons and he needs to make up for it next season. Does he have a preference with regards to playing the Premier League or the Primera Liga? Vargas likes both leagues as well as the Serie A.

Vargas is 29 next month, and doesn't appear to the be the kind of player that fits FSG's transfer profile. However, as his Agent confirmed, the club is interested, so age must not be an issue.

I would be more concerned with Vargas' end product, which is a little patchy over the last couple of years:

* 4 goals in his last 50 games.
* 12 assists in his last 50 games.
* Goal scored ever 825 minutes (One every 9 games)
* Assist every 275 minutes (One every 3 games)

  1. I hope we dont see this guy at Anfield. He is overweight, he needs to leave Fiorentina because the Fans there BOO him everytime he plays, for his lack of effort, and laid back attitude on the pitch, a 29 year old struggling with his weight, lacking effort, a big NO THANKS. Besides if we were interested we would have moved when Aqua went there.

  2. Those stats put Enrique and Downing to shame. Attacking wise Enrique is hopeless, runs into blind alleys and can't cross accurately with his instep...Nowhere near good enough!

  3. Don't believe this story. Not the type of player LFC need. If it was on loan maybe, but he is in his last year of his contract and nobody wants  him, even at Fiorentina. No for me, his agent is trying to find another team.

  4. You do realise enrique is a defender so really is never shown any stats for goals and assists.
Oh and because I have made this point before to which people would mention someone like baines, that is because he takes all of Evertons set pieces and is somewhat of a specialist. What Enrique does is provide pace down the flank and is a tidy defender with the exception of a few lapses of concentration, as every defender has

  6. I have just read Br comments, how do you think he says he's interested! He says he wants to bring in a few players. You just like making assumptions remember in July you spoke about two urugruan reporters  saying Liverpool are signing Ramires next week. Still waiting!

  9. I have a real problem with this sort of reporting.  You say he 'responds to El Loco rumour' but if anything he deliberately DOESN'T respond to it, he instead avoids it.

I don't know why Liverpool supporters want us to be openly talking about targets.  All that does is give other people chance to get in on it, push up the price and loses us even more of the status that we used to have as a quiet respectful club that did all the talking behind closed doors.

  10. 4 mil. and we would take him I guess... He would want earning more than at Fiorentina and having that in consideration we can not pay a lot for him.

Still, pro's of signing him would be having a player capable of challenging Enrique in LB position and also a player who can go in to midfield if we are left little thin there with injures and ban's.

  11. We could get someone from the championship for £300k and they would be 10 times better than this has been player. His own club want rid of him. This is LFC not some struggling team who signs other teams rejects... By the way what a pile of rubbish this story is. BR DOES NOT respond but dismisses the question altogether, huge difference. If anything he goes on to say that he's not even heard of him. This story.. Pftt... Smh

  16. Just because an agent says we are linked it doesn't make it true. No truth in this story
