Redknapp: LFC flop could be the 'biggest signing since Carlos Tevez'. Agree?

With Fabio Borini soon to be unveiled as Brendan Rodgers' first signing for Liverpool, it increasingly looks like Andy Carroll's days at Anfield are numbered. Several clubs have expressed interest in signing the 35m man, and ex-Reds midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes that West Ham could be Carroll's ideal destination.

In his column for the Daily Mail today, Redknapp argued that Carroll is a 'good player', and that he would be 'fantastic loan' for West Ham, adding:

"West Ham were very direct at times last season in their promotion campaign and Carroll is a serious threat in the air. He can lead the line, play up on his own and score. Carroll will give West Ham something extra.

"It is an ambitious plan and, if David Sullivan and David Gold can pull it off, I can imagine the excitement it will create at Upton Park. It would be the biggest signing since Carlos Tevez".

This may sound harsh but when it comes quality, expectation and style of play, West Ham is the level at which Carroll should be playing. Like Newcastle two years ago, they've just been promoted from the Championship, and the team would probably be built around him if he went there, which would be a good thing.

I can't see it happening though. West Ham is a great club, but Carroll would probably see it as too much of a step-down, and a tacit admission of his failure at Liverpool.

West Ham Boss Sam Allardyce is definitely interested in signing Carroll. He told Sky Sports this afternoon:

"You can't say you wouldn't be interested in Andy Carroll, he's a player who has got great stature in the Premier League. Whether Andy Carroll wants to come to West Ham is another matter"

Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler had some words of advice for the beleaguered striker:

"At times last year he [Carroll] tried to do a little bit too much and tried to be a £35m player and not do the simple things that got him the move in the first place ie: being a tough forward to make and getting his elbows into defenders in a good old-fashioned English centre-forward way.

"He has to continue what he was doing at the end of last season in being a headache for defenders as he looked a totally different player to the one at the start of the season."

How are carroll days numbered? We have 4 strikers only... With bellamy leaving we have 3. We have already lost kuyt and maxi. Plus carroll will fight for his place! And rodgers will keep him. Carroll isn't just about long balls he can play to feet.

  3. Just a couple of points for Jamie Redknap:

    1) Carroll is just getting his act together and getting his confidence back.

    2) What would be the point of loaning him out? We either sell him or Keep him, he isn't going to get any better or learn anything playing at West Ham.

    3) The Liverpool players are going to take time to learn this Tic Tac system and you always need plan B, so while Carroll is learning he can always revert back to the long ball game.

    4) Redknap should keep his big mouth shut,  he may have been a good player for us but as a pundit he's useless.

  4. True! It's just unfair, he had to pay the price for a lot of things that he had not done! I believe we will miss him if he goes!

Can anyone explain to me why no one else was prepared to pay £35 Million for Andy Carroll if he was so good?

You can't turn a donkey into a racehorse.

Again to much blind loyalty instead of the facts.

Brendan Rogers has made it as clear as possible that he doesn't think that Carroll will fit into his playing style.

Dalglish bought badly in Downing, Adam & Carroll I'm prepared to give Henderson another season due to the fact he was not played in his best position.

  11. Come on Jaimie, how about a poll on whether Carroll should be loaned out?

    ReplyDelete
  12. brendan rogers seems to be a fair man, he will hardly loan out carroll without at least giving him a proper chance, the same chance that every player deserves to prove their worth to the new coach, andy is going nowhere fast. looking forward to the season ahead.

  13. Andy Carroll should stay at Liverpool. He's undoubtedly a major asset to the squad. I reckon he would improve any squad in the PL.

  14. This is a difficult one to call, as none us of us know what BR is thinking or planning! Making assumptions and being honest, AC has not played like a quality player, even the odd good game towards the end of the season, can't be manipulated to suggest all is now good.

Saying all that, a lot of other questions can be asked around this one, did the team play to his strengths? Is he a player that needs time to settle and gel, questions we don't have solid answers to, unless we listen to opinion and guess work.

My view, in the right team AC will be a very good player, I would expect him to be a regular for England and have a successful career... is that team Liverpool. I'm not sure, although I disagree with some that say he can't play with his feet, he can, but that would need improving.

Another angle to consider is the style BR will require, it will not be the same as Spain or Barcelona, it will be a similar shape and philosophy but he'll adapt to suit the English game. So now the question changes, can BR use AC in that adapted version, a fluid English pass and move style with a big more static Striker to help pull defenders away to create space for the more free flowing player around him, maybe, maybe not... and that brings about another blog I think?

What is important is simple, if BR does not see AC has being the player that fits his philosophy, he goes, and that has nothing to do with how successful he has been to date. AC could have had a great season with clubs chasing his signature, if BR won't be playing to his style, he'd still go. What we have with BR is a new style of play, one that might see some players go and other improve, guess we'll have to wait and see... But I won't be allowing myself to think a player must stay or must go based on my individual preference, I want a successful Liverpool again and if some players I like go to bring about that success, then so be it ...

  15. Its just silly specualtion, Borini will play wide or as second strike just like Suarez, as one of us stated Andy is getting his act together, not so lazy anymore and putting in a shift, we are neither selling nor loaning him out, it will not make sense at all.  By any standards I do not think we will be willing to deal with Sam A. at all with his history-purple nose against us I doubt he will pull it off.  Andy is going nowhere!

    ReplyDelete
  16. ac has got to stay at liverpool .he is also a major plus when we are defending set pieces. he is a handfull for most defenders .the service to him was poor last season.would be a major mistake to let him go on loan to west ham. how would he improve any under fat sam. he would be out on the piss with nolan every nite . no hes got to stay the lad found some form at the back end of the season lets hope br gives him a chance

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think Caroll deserves a chance to prove he can adapt to Rodger's system like a top-class striker. If he doesn't, sell him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. As has been repeated ad infinitum, the £35m fee for Carroll was driven by Chelsea's pursuit of Torres at an equally ridiculous £50m.  Anyways, Tottenham were ready to spend big on Carroll, straight up - the figures were +£20m if I remember correctly...
Adam and Downing are already as good as they're going to get and worth as much on the transfer market as they're ever likely to be. Carroll and Henderson on the other hand have plenty of scope for growth, both on the pitch and in the transfer market. Hence imo the former two should be sold asap, and the latter two should be held onto and developed further.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It was a bad buy for that price but we have him as our player now and if he stays as a supporter of this once great club, you have to  support Andy and believe he has to come good.

We kind of know Rodgers doesn't favour the football that supposedly suits Andy, hence why he's being linked elsewhere but he will offer the team a complete different option if needed.

Hopefully Rodgers will have everyone improve their football and most importantly confidence on the ball. Players like Henderson and Carroll may step up a level or 2 next season.

    ReplyDelete
  20. At every other top club all the talk is always about the strength in depth that is needed to maintain a consistent challenge throughout a season. At Liverpool, as soon as there is more than one player capable of playing in the same position, everybody decides that one of them should make way and be sold.

Carroll will have plenty of games to prove himself this season, even with Borini, Suarez and Bellamy competing for one of the two forward places (and that's assuming that a more natural wide-man shall assume the other spot in a 3 man attack)

  25. Dream on.  What is it with LFC fans and this Carroll revisionism?!  He was poor all season apart from one three week period, and now all of a sudden he's a world beater?!  His days are numbered; he will leave or go on loan, either now or in January, and next summer he will not an LFC player (thank god).

    ReplyDelete
  26. If Rodgers wanted to keep Carroll he would've emphatically stated as much, just as he did with Maxi and Henderson.  He hasn't, despite countless opportunities.  Carroll is a goner, and the sooner he leaves, the better.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Carroll did improve towards the end of last season. However, this was within the context of the English league. Our's has fallen behind both the leagues of Spain and Germany. To compete with modern football requires quick mental agility. Carroll would do well for West Ham, but he does not have the speed of thought to unlock any sophisticated defence on a regular basis. It's time for him to leave and for people to realise that we live in 2012.

Man C showed us last season that one-dimensional football will not win the premier league. For Carroll to flourish, we would need to send all foreign players back to their countries of origin. Beautiful hoof football would then be able to reign. Parents on Sunday mornings would again have the freedom to shout at their kids to hoof the ball. Oh, how great this country would be again. We could even ignore Europe and start up the home nations tournament again.

Sorry, Carroll is not good enough. Stop being sentimental. Fans pay too much and deserve much, much more.

  28. carrol is going nowhere - do you really think fsg are going to lose what could be £15m on a 22 year old that in 3 years with increasing player prices could be still sold for £30m + ... they are running a business

  31. Get rid of foreign players and to hell with playing in Europe? Looks like you want the EPL to look like pick up games like one would see at the local park. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ideally any transfers to LFC would be bought at their peaks and ready to deliver to the maximum immediately, but unfortunately that is not the case.

Even read Rodger's comments about Borini (and Henderson) and you'll see him clearly stating that he is not buying the finished product, but somebody who will develop over the next few years.

American sports owners are massive on stats.  It's always 3 and "o" or "tripple double" or that "keeper has so many shutouts" or that guy is a "rebounding genius" or that dude "made 600 yards" this season.  Stats are EVERYTHING.

Imagine Werner's surprise when he saw Downing 36 and "o" Carroll 42 and 6 and Henderson 37 and 2.  8-0 .   When comparing those stats to 30mill berbatov 7 goals in 12, 18mil Nani 9 goals in 29 or £2m Dempsey 17 in 37 Werner looks like he wants Carroll gone for very much the same reason he wanted Commoli and Kenny gone, their overall incompetence in every department last season.

For me this is quite clearly a decision from the top in much the same way Babel and the like were cleared out before every really being given a chance.

NOW get out their and raise your stock!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes, Rodgers emphatically stated how important Maxi was to the club before letting him leave a mere couple of days later.

I would be extremely surprised if LFC give up on Carroll so early in his career, just because he was brought in for a price tag way above his level of ability.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why is there such a rush to get Caroll out the door ?

We all know he underperformed in an underperforming team last year ..

Take a young player dumped with the tag of Britians most expensive footballer , throw him into a team of misfiring misfits (downing adam hendo et el ) play him in fits and starts (never more than 3 games in succesion) and what do you get .. exactly what we got .. A goal shy confidence shot striker carrying the moans of anfield with every failed trap or pass on his ponytailed ladden shoulders..

New manager .. new start .. Give the guy a break and a chance !!

The only use for Carroll is the Long ball game which is perfect for the style of play allydyce has introduced to west ham as he is too slow and too direct for any other style of play but he will work well with nolan if the two of them meet up again.

    ReplyDelete

  41.  because we bougt him to defend set pieces didn't we.
anything left at the bottom of the barrel to scrape?

    ReplyDelete
  42. If Carroll just stands on the opposition's weakest centre back and suarez and borini play either side of him, with gerrard lucas and henderson in midfield, we have one hell of a solid team with a lot of options.

Johnson and Enrique will be able to bomb forward as they see fit with lucas covering. Henderson can do what he was bought for - to play centre mid without competing with gerrard and can provide the legs so that Gerrard can be more selective in his runs. With a tactically astute manager, this could be a good team. I see no role for downing or adam, whereas I see a significant role for Carroll. He occupies two defenders. That gives room for talented players making runs. Last season we didn't have anyone making runs. Next season we will.If we are two goals up, suso and/or sterling could be subbed for suarez and borini and we will remain solid. Our two most talented kids will get a chance to play without crippling pressure and our two creative attacking players will get a rest every now and then.

  45. This whole Andy Caroll saga is becoming tedious, and let’s
be honest, a little undignified.  For
some he’s a clumsy throw back to an era that rewarded long-ball football.  To others he’s a young man who has shown his
willingness to fight for the cause, and can have a big effect on a match, even
one as high profile as an FA Cup final.

The background to this is that he was bought at 35M, when he
was at best a 25M player, and if we’re honest perhaps a little less.  Even so, swapping Torres for Suarez and
Caroll was good business – a bit messed up in the valuations I grant you, but
    good business.

The point is this, Caroll has shown his desire to work for
the club.  Yes, he’s an old fashioned
number 9, but does that mean he can’t fit into a system of tiki-taka /
pass-and-move?  Time will tell.  We know the following about the guy:

    Pros

    ·
He’s great in the air, maybe the best in the
    league

    ·
    He’s got a cracking shot

    ·
Defenders don’t know how to handle him

    ·
    He can win games single-handedly

    ·
He can hold the ball up (better than Rooney on
    recent evidence)

    ·
He tracks back and defends for the team

Cons (some of which are suspicions)

    ·
He’s not as mobile as Suarez (not many are!)

    ·
His passing / pass selection may not be adequate
    for Rodgers style

    ·
He may not be quick enough

    ·
When playing without confidence he’s rubbish (as
    are most forwards)

    ·
He’s taken a long time to settle in (mainly due
to injury / not being played / subsequent lack confidence)

I think Caroll is significantly better than an average
player.  If honest, I do have some doubts
as to whether he will fit in with the new order.  But, I’ve got confidence in Rodgers.  He got the job on the back of turning average
Championship players into above average premiership players.  As manager he wears many hats, but part of
his job is to coach and improve players.
I think Caroll should be given the chance to succeed.

I also think that Rodgers comments were perhaps somewhere
between a test and statement of intent.
Not just for Caroll but all LFC players.
Take nothing for granted.  LFC is
a massive club.  If you want to play for
us, you need to work hard and show your desire.
I think he’s looking for a positive response, and if he doesn’t get one
he’ll cut his losses.  Not Rodgers fault,
not the owners fault. We know where the blame lies, but we don’t need to say it
out loud.  We simply move on.

  49. Who said he was a world-beater Jamie? we only see what any fan can see, that he has improved since his dreadful start to and progression through last season. Praise the good lord above that you are not involved in any decisions our wonderul football club. I think people who actually know something about football and run the club will be keeping him and using him next season and he will still be a Liverpool player in the winter of 2013/14.  (Thank God.)

    ReplyDelete
  50. What makes you think Carroll is a bad player Jamie? Is it the fact that every manager that has spoken publicly about him has said what a great player he is? Is it that he didn't score a hat-trick in every game?
Is that is that you are just being facetious? I just don't get it?

Do you think Suarez should be gone as well, because looking at his goal rate, for a striker, fairly rubbish last season.

What about Reina? he let in quite a few last year, perhaps we should get rid of him as well?

    ReplyDelete
  51. liverpool4life56510:52 pm, July 14, 2012

Poor all season? Because kenny kept dropping him! He played good one game then kenny dropped him which affected his confidence which he gained back at end of the season. Scoring against blackburn, everton then nearly saved us in the final also got us to the final by scoring against everton and getting us all three points at blackburn. We saw the real andy carroll putting himself about winning balls! Which he took the confidence into the euros and scored their. He will prove a lot of people wrong and rodgers will give him a chance like has to other players.

  52. liverpool4life56510:59 pm, July 14, 2012

Carroll isn't all about long balls.he can play to feet and he can score with his feet.. So you can't say he just about long ball. E.g scoring against chelsea in the final an man city when he first came to liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I've argued in many occasions that LFC should sell Suarez and Reina, so I think you need some new examples. As for Carroll, I've also explained at length - with examples - why Carroll is no good for LFC, and I don't have time to repeat myself, but the two main reason: 6% conversion rate (lowest of any striker in the PL); and 57% passing accuracy, which is woeful, and nowhere near good enough for a passing team. These are objective facts, and no amount of excuses like 'but he'll come good' will change the actual, irrefutable reality.

  59. Christiano Ronaldo had his first season at united and appeared 40 times and scored 6 goals and 6 assists, should they have just given up because he didn't scored 20 goals?
Gerrard made 30 appearances in his first season and scored 1 goal should we have loaned him out??Im not saying Carroll is the same but Jesus he's shown some good talent especially at the euros getting every long ball bringing it down perfect and laying off a good pass resulting in play advancing up the field shame Rooney was shattered at that point.. He was also involved in a number of defensive situations all of which he defended brilliantly.Last season he was getting pulled about left right and center, constantly getting elbows to the back and ribs and never getting the call..Give the guy a break he was gutted to leave his boyhood club, hes over that now and a red he will come good next season, lets face it Kenny managed the whole team wrong from overpaying for players, dealing with the press, tactics, constantly putting out teams that didnt fit the opposition (for instance not playing Carroll against stoke) not playing in form players (constantly dropping maxi after he was scoring),  having absolutely no back up tactics, I constantly watched 90 minuets after 90 minuets of the same plays not working!! he got most of it wrong, gutted but lets face it he did or things would have gone better.Im expecting Carroll to come good under BR all the players so far are taking really well to his training and style and seeing improvements I have no reason to believe Carroll is going to do anything less than work hard and improve.

    ReplyDelete
  65. won't miss him at all. One man does not make a team. He has gotten a lot of respect for doing nothing. He is clearly not consistent enough to be relied on. He should be playing at a lower level till he plays well as you say on a regular basis. The club is too ambitious. I think he was better with less pressure at Newcastle.

    ReplyDelete
  66. i consider the new manager as the Messiah cleaning up the deadwood and the parasites that are sucking up huge contracts at the club while giving us nothing back in return. This summer's transfer window as judgement day. The biggest failures and the biggest flops no matter how popular  will be shown the door. Liverpool is an elite club for elite players not for an amateur club for mediocre talent. Carroll should play for a less ambitious club where his lack of consistent play over a whole season would not be a big deal.  A mid-table club like Fulham for instance. He gets more respect for being a good header of the ball and nothing else.
