'It's my dream!' - €8m Schalke star responds to LFC transfer speculation. Bid?

Schalke attacking midfielder Lewis Holtby has been linked with a move to Liverpool several times over the last month, and when asked about the possibility of moving to the Premier League recently, the 21-year old German International made it clear that playing in England is his ultimate goal.

Two weeks ago, Holtby admitted that he dreams of playing in the Premier League:

"I would be lying if I said I will definitely extend may contract [with Schalke]. My dream was always the Premier League, and someday I will make this step"

Speaking to Reporters after Schalke's 1-0 pre-season defeat to AC Milan on Tuesday, €8m-rated Holtby was asked about interest from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, and he once again reiterated his desire to move to England:

"The Premier League is my dream. As a footballer, you want to improve always, and in football everything is possible. I just have a great affinity for English football, and I've always said: If I am good enough for the Premier League, I want to play there too".

Alas, there is, unfortunately, one slight issue that could prevent him from joining Liverpool:

"My father was born in England and was a Everton fan since the age of five. He immediately infected me with the Everton virus! Since then I have been a Everton fan and have always followed their games"

Holtby certainly fits the 'buy them young' policy at Liverpool but would he actually improve the squad? Here are his league stats from last season:

* 6 goals and 1 assist in 27 league games.
* 1 goal every 322 minutes (1 every 3.5 games)
* 1 shot on goal every 175 minutes (1 every 1.9 games)
* 28% Shooting accuracy
* Successful cross every 74 minutes.

Stats: OPTA

Granted, not the greatest stats, but he's only 21 and can only improve. Worth a bid?

  3. great lets sign every1 that is rubbish but may become good and when we have a full team of these players and they stay shit instead of transforming into superstars thats when we'll probably realise our short comings

  7. couldn't be much worse than last year !!! or could he

  8. Carroll does not have the basics (technique etc), plus he cannot fit into a passing team. This guy does and can. There is a difference; it's not just about age.

    Are you watching the same andy carroll as me? Carroll last few games for liverpool. Is more composed,has brillant touches for a big guy...can pass with his left or right foot. He will only get better.. Rodgers has said he doesn't want him to leave because HE CAN fit into his system...

    He looks alright on youtube, admittedly I've not seen him play, but I think the £8m could be better spent.

    How about going all out for Iker Muniain, could you imagine him with Suarez and Borini up front? Opposition defenders just wouldn't know where to turn or who to pick up - feel free to drool at this point!!

    Joe Allen would be nice too but I don't see it happening, especially as Gerrard would arguably play that role better with Lucas behind him and maybe Shelvy in front.

    Dagger should be used for cover for Lucas with Coates replacing him in defence if it's ever needed, Dagger is mobile enough, has decent vision for a pass and can carry the ball forward.

    Sterling and possibly Morgan can add decent, hungry depth to the squad.

    Hopefully Adam can be used, either money from selling him or player plus cash, to get Dempsey. Maybe even use any pittance we get from selling Aquilani too.

    Left back cover seems more important to me than another young untried midfielder. Although who that cover should be I don't know.

    The thing I think we are all forgetting is that the current squad were good enough to win some big games last season when they stepped up. We just weren't consistent and, even worse, were tactically way behind much of our competition, that put pressure on already underperforming players and shot them to pieces. I know they are paid a lot to handle the pressure, but if you suddenly paid me an extra 30 or 40 grand a week I wouldn't all of a sudden become 3 or 4 times better at my job, it would take a bit of time.

    I would hope that BR and the castigated members of last seasons squad are afforded time this season and the notion of "wholesale" changes is not visited until next summer.

    I've got a lot of hope for progression this season with BR in charge. YNWA

  17. I think a sneaky bid for adebayor is a very good idea?! £5 - £10 million and £120k a week wages, I know his wages demands are high but considering we pay Joe Cole the same amount, then why not he will bag 15+ goals a season! Plus we payed £35 million for Carroll on £80k - £100k a week. What you guys think?

  18. Muniain is getting to Hazard levels of potential, hype, exposure and fee. Would love to see him here, quality young player but don't see it happening at all. One can dream though.

    I agree completely, just fancied a drooling daydream... :)

  20. Without CL football, I doubt we have much room for more big wages. Our wages are up there with some CL teams already as it is. So don't see FSG splashing on big wages for a player at the moment.

    Yeah sure lets sign a bitter. NOT. Overrated anyway.

  22. Brendon Rogers in his latest interview following the game with Spurs thinks differently. Oh and for the record there is more chance of LFC signing the Pope than this lad in your article. His Dad is an ex soldier from Liverpool who is a fanatical Evertonian as is Lewis. Possibly will be an Arsenal Target but he will never touch the"this is anfield sign" as a Liverpool player

    ReplyDelete
  23. so was Carra but we got them young when nobody else was interested. I think Owens Dad played for Everton.

  24. Owen is a manure fan now.

  25.  exactly what i have been saying for ages but for some reason my comments never get posted.....

  26. Fowler, Owen, McManaman and Carra were all Everton supporters but played for LFC so it wouldn't be an obstacle for him (except his dad might disown him!)

  27. Had the pleasure of going to the game yesterday in Baltimore. I have to honestly say that Andy Carroll is worse watching live than he is on TV. This guy contributes absolutely nothing to this team. Those of you who think he is going to get better are totally deluded.

  28. they were mate but all signed when they where very young 16 or under. Lewis is different

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yer... but what are the chances that Everton can sign Lewis Holtby, yes he's an Evertonian but he also came out and sed his dream was to play in the Premier League. Jamie Carragher is a Evertonian didn't stop him from playing for Liverpool. He's looking to play in the prem and Liverpool a good club have taken a interest in him, deffo a chance I wouldn't gave up.

    And I watch the game on ESPN, carroll showed good touches misplaced one pass because he hasn't played or trained for four weeks. Gerrard,borini also missed placed passes. Because its andy carroll your just getting on the hating band wagon. What did he do wrong??? Because breden was quiet inpressed.even said he can get into his pass and move style.. He got involved quiet well had a chanceto score but got beat by the defender(missing his sharpness.

  31. He had one moment of skill and looked totally shocked that he pulled it off other than that what else did he do? I'm so so tired of folks makin excuses for this guy @35mil!!! Cum on son!!! How does he make Liverpool a better team?. Did you all make these same excuses for Heskey or Ngog? I didn't think so!!!! No Im not gettin on the AC hate wagon I was against Liverpool signing him from the very start. He in my opinion is not what I call a prolific player let alone scorer. He cant run, can't control the ball and most of all he can't score.
    The sooner folks realize that this was a mistake the better off we will be. Common sense tells you that you don't spend 35mil in the hope someone will come good or based on potential @that cost you need to be the finished article already. I understand that people want him to live upto that price tag but from where Im sitting you all are settin yourselves up for failure it just aint gonna happen and you just can't live off blind faith. I truly hope he proves me wrong but @this point I just don't see that happenning and the sooner he is sold the better.

  32. Carroll ? Sharpness? Now that is a new one.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey, the price tag isn’t Carrolls fault, sound like you should hit out on KK, Comolli or someone.

    Carroll can only make his football, and like other has stated, he really has it and surely will improve as well!

    He wasn't bad at all! He staying end of matter :) let him get his match fitness back and we will see the andy carroll who scored at the end of the season at...blackburn, took us to the final (against everton) an scored against chelsea in the final snd lucky not to get another!

  35. liverpool4life56510:30 am, July 30, 2012

    Yes sharpess... U need sharpness to get to a ball. If ur not sharp u won't get to a ball in time (like his goal in euro lost the defender abit of movement then head it in. Or his goal in the final. Nice feet does terry over an smashes it in!

  36. I'm here to vent my frustrations at our current transfer or rather in-active in the transfer market. When we first appointed Rogers I was full of hope for the manager because in the press he promised to bring players, players he knew and players he thot has quality. Now after two months later and the new season is just weeks away all we got so far is Borini. We'be not replace the lost of Rodriguez & Kyut and now Carol is apparently being shipped out on loan. I would love to stay positive but so far the club is not giving the fans any reassurance that we are going to improve from last season. It's so frustrating that LFC is not making a statement to other clubs and fans that we are serious about compepeting against the elite. When will reinforcement comes in??? Why arent we spending??? Pls explain
