Last month, Liverpool defender Daniel Agger made it clear that he is 'happy' at Anfield, and 'enthusiastic' about the prospect of working with new Reds manager Brendan Rodgers. Despite this, rumours about a possible move to Barcelona or Real Madrid persist, and now, Agger's former team-mater Javier Mascherano has fanned the flames of speculation with an unsubtle attempt to publicly influence the Dane.
In an interview with El Mundo Deportivo yesterday, Mascherano - who is due to sign a new contract with Barca this week - was asked whether Agger would be a good signing for Barcelona. He said:
"Agger has great qualities in central defence. He is clever and calm with the ball and can play a major role in the building of the game. He can actually score some goals also. As a person he is a great guy who takes his work very seriously. I have enjoyed playing with him".
Manchester City are also reportedly in the running for Agger, but unlike fellow centre-back Martin Skrtel, Agger has kept his mouth shut on the issue, and he's not using the press to apply indirect pressure on Liverpool.
After spending over 50% of his LFC career on the treatment table, Agger owes Liverpool big time, and I'm sure he knows that, and if the club has to lose a centre-back, I hope it ends up being Skrtel.
Conversely, given the fact Agger is so injury prone, perhaps cashing in on him now is the right thing to do? Liverpool may never again be in a position to command a big fee for Agger, especially if his his injury problems increase as he gets older.
One thing is for sure, if Barcelona are interested, Denmark manager Martin Olsen will almost certainly advise Agger to make the move. Speaking to Aftonbladet recently, Olsen said:
"When he is fit, Agger is a modern, top class stopper. I would like to see him next to Gerard Pique at Barcelona. That, I think, is his level."

Where the option that says "Neither"?
ReplyDeleteLiverpool need to keep firm with these players. If anyone wants them thry can pay us 30million. Or go away. Spurs do it with theit players why can't we do it.
ReplyDeleteI like to get rid of you kanwar
ReplyDeleteWhere's the option that says both?
ReplyDeleteI appreciate Agger's loyalty and class, but the fact that he is so injury prone, if BR has to sell either, then it's better to sell Agger. Skrtel is like Carra, can last an entire season with almost no injury.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a disaster if we lost either of our centre backs.
ReplyDeleteJaimie,
ReplyDeleteUsually I'm very supportive of your articles even when I choose not to comment on them.
However your poll and article on this occasion is very poor and not what I expect from you.
Poll is invalid as most fans do not want either to go, whatever the result it will be misleading due to not having a 'neither' option.
ReplyDeleteI wouldnt want to sell any of our centre backs. Agger for me is one of the best centre backs in the world WHEN he's fit. He is injury prone though but having said that if Liverpool lose Agger who do they replace him with? Liverpool are obviously a massive club with a massive history but for a modern day defender who is considered the same quality as Agger then it's going to be very difficult to find without the offer ov champs league football.
ReplyDeleteThe Poll is not 'invalid'. Obviously, the question is IF Liverpool were to sell a CB, who would you prefer to go? That is a valid question, especially given the growing interest in both Agger and Skrtel. It might not be a question LFC fans want to face, but that's life. Fans didn't want to face the possibility of losing Xabi Alonso or Fernando Torres either, but it happened.
ReplyDeleteDo you think you'll get that magical 6000 responses that you always seem to get? That's mad, that.
ReplyDeleteConsidering 1.5 million people visit the site per month, I don't think 6000 responses is out of the ordinary. Often, it's much more than that.
ReplyDeleteDon't show off Jaimie. Nice round number though, no? 6000 responses? EVERY time???
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
(hmmmmmmm etc)
Nice.
ReplyDeleteIf one has to go it has to be Agger! He does spend a lot of time at the treatment table you know!
ReplyDeleteI'd rather Skrtel leave. I think we miss Agger's quality more than we miss Skrtel's, whenever either is injured. But then again, Agger does spend a lot of time injured.
ReplyDeleteBarca players starting their transfer target seduction eh. Did it over Cesc to what I would call very annoying levels if I were a Arsenal fan.
why their is no option neither ?
ReplyDeleteIts not valid irrespective of the growing interest because we are not obliged to sell. We can decide to keep both so its not a good question to be asked IMO.
ReplyDeleteJust because you don't like the subject doesn't make the poll invalid. If you don't like it, don't vote. Simple.
ReplyDeleteIts not the matter of my liking. Its not only me who is arguing about it as you can see the comments.
ReplyDeletewe need both of them
ReplyDeleteNow you want Agger to stay, you have been trying toget rid of him for th elast 3 seasons?
ReplyDeletetoingg!! LFC shouldn't sell any of them!! Why they have to help RMA & FCB to enrich their f***ing defence??
