Confirmed: €18m Argentina star "will study offers". Should LFC bid..?

A few days ago, renowned Portuguese newspaper Jornal Record, claimed that Liverpool were set to make an €18m offer for Benfica star Nicolás Gaitán. The Argentine attacking midfielder would be a superb signing for the the Reds, and his Agent confirmed yesterday that the player would consider all offers..

Speaking to TMW, Jose Iribarren - Gaitan's Agent - made the predictable claim that the Argentine star is 'happy with Benfica', but also left the door open for clubs to pursue interest. He said:

"If an offer appears we would study it, but I do not know of any offer on the table right now"

As confirmed by Benfica President Luis Filipe Vieira recently, Gaitan is definitely available this summer:

"The sale of players is the priority for Benfica but only if it is helping the club. Our aim is to break even and make around 50 million euros in the summer through sales"

Gaitan reportedly has a ridiculous €45m release clause (!), but with Benfica's well-publicised financial problems, and the President's wish to 'break even' this summer, the club could well be forced to sell the attacking midfielder for much less.

He's definitely not worth more than €20m right now IMO. In two years at Benfica, he's grabbed 13 goals and 25 assists in 92 games which equates to:

* One goal every 7 games
* One assist every 3.6 games

It's not a bad record, but it's certainly not prolific either. Having said that, Gaitan would (IMO) be a much better option than the likes of Stewart Downing and Milos Krasic. What do you think?

  2. BR has never had this guy at a club he worked with, Re Borini, Allen, DuVries, etc, so for that reason I say its not on. Lets have a look at the Reading squad for our next signing, coz the $Dollars have dried up from FSG, A New Manager with a 3 year plan, given no money, buying on scraps, same old same old, welcome to mediocrity again.

  3. When / If he buys Allen then that c$40m on two players with probably 2 more to come. That's hardly no money.

  4. Funny the way you phrase everything, no chance he is coming, pretty much like everyone else you suggest has been "linked" to us

  5. Jaimie,

What do you think about BBC spreading lies about LFC players. Isn't it an attempt to unsettle Liverpool players ?

I noticed recently BBC has turned into Man Utd official site where tiny details about ManU are written with great enthusiasm.

  7. He's a good player The Reds should sing him but the question is how much more budget manager have to spend on the transfer market , also we are very much in need for another quality striker , which is the thing that nobody is talking about right now ,another striker and another winger , now when we have Gerard and Henderson and ,Lucas back  also Shelvey shows some quality on a preseason and adam and Spearing as a back up I don't think that we need another midfilder. Also there are roumors abot Gaston Ramirez is set to sing for Reds, if we have enough money to spend why not
