'They let him down' - Carra blasts the 'attitude' of LFC's 'star players'. Fair?

England boss Roy Hodgson's ill-fated spell at Anfield ended with the sack after only six months, and from day one, it was clear that certain members of the squad were just not interested in working with him. Now, Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has confirmed that certain players basically sabotaged Hodgson's reign, and his words should serve as a warning for new Reds manager Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Carragher admitted that Hodgson 'wasn’t perceived as the right type of manager for Liverpool', and directly suggested that the attitude of some players left a lot to be desired:

"Naturally, I’m always asked why it went wrong so quickly for Roy at Anfield, and it was due to a combination of circumstances. First and foremost, I must be honest and say he was let down by the attitude of some star players who’ve since left the club. Not everyone in the squad bought into his philosophy".

Carra must be referring to players like Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano here, though I'm sure there are players in the current squad who also 'let down' the club, but, for obvious reasons, Carra is only going to refer to those who've left.

I'm not suggesting that Hodgson was the right long-term solution for Liverpool, but players should still be giving their all for the club and the shirt, irrespective of the manager.

It just goes to show that players can and will undermine the manager if they don't get their own way. Hopefully, we won't see a repeat of this kind of treachery during the reign of Brendan Rodgers.

  2. Carra is a big part of the problem today. he is xenophobic and thick as 2 short planks, his biography is testament to what type of person he is.
his recent comments about how the atmosphere is  much better now, since kennys awful buys, just highlights that dining with the hendersons because they are british, is more important than quality of the squad. i hope that hoofing moron is never let close to any coaching at liverpool, he can go back to his boyhood club for that.

  4. Is football a team game or do players play for themselves?

  5. JK He obviously was talking about players who have now left the club, ie Torres and Macha, but for you to say you are "sure" there are players in the current squad who did not play for Hodgson, and that Carra cannot say for obvious reasons is your opinion, NOT the truth so please do not twist quotes. Give us facts, like you like to do. Who do you know was against Roy, and is still there.

And i am sure if Carra hears that you are twisting what he says, he will be on here telling you, as he did to a certain radio broadcaster.

  7. Any positive LFC news to report? Or are you taking the bad news sells tactic.

Anyway I think your referring to Pepe. He should be sold quick time not because of Roy but because Reina made no effort to play for Kenny and should have been benched most of the second half of season.

Reina has shown no loyalty to LFC since the Rafa days and has tried to encourage a move away every transfer window with comments about Arsenal and even UTD being in his list of possibilities before degaay.

I would sell him or bench him, it's one of the very few things I agree with you on Kanwar, otherwise I normally think you talk crap.

  8. EXCLUSIVE: LFC fan website associates with The S*n ahead of Hillsborough anniversary
14042012Just 24 hours before the emotional service at Anfield to commemorate and pay respect to the 96 Liverpool fans who died at Hillsborough in 1989, Liverpool website owner Jaimie Kanwar has been liaising with The S*n.In case anybody needs reminding, that newspaper printed vile stories in the wake of the tragedy falsely accusing LFC supporters of horrendous acts. The articles were pure fiction and The S*n has been boycotted ever since by all right-minded Liverpool fans. However, on the weekend of the 23rd anniversary of the disaster, Kanwar contacted The S*n’s sports editor in order to obtain a story to publish on his Liverpool Kop website!!

  9. I don't see how any self respecting footballer won't buy into BR's philosophy though. Woy loved his typical 4-4-2 which in all honesty, our squad wasn't built to play at the time. Woy would have loved to have Downing and Carroll and they would have suited his game to a tee, with 2 box to box players in the middle - which makes Adam and Hendo a good fit too.

With BR, he likes his technical players who are adept at making short passes. The likes of Lucas, Hendo, Aquilani, Suarez, Shelvey, Maxi, Agger and Reina will have a field day with BR's philosophy, add Sigurdsson to the list and we would actually have a very competent team to play Brendan's brand of football. Good times ahead! I think we signed the right guy this time round.

I've always been a huge Rafa fan and I was dreading the Woy appointment even before it happened. Can't say the same about Rodgers; we were comprehensively outpassed by his team of largely average footballers who chalked up world class stats, they were actually very good to watch, and they set up to score like Man U does without playing the same garbage.

  11. No you state obviously Carra cannot say that there are others in the squad. That is inferring that Carra believes there are others but he cannot say there names because they are still there, and it would not be nice for him to name them.
You are embellishing the statement for your own ends, to try and make a story out of it, and that sir is plainly not the case.

  12. Dont underestimate B Rodgers - I dont believe he will stand any nonsense and the players will have to get super fit quicklly - those who wont will be out - Swansea outplayed teams because they were so fit as well as skillful

Hey Jamie look at my opinion on tranfers:

    L.De Jong (12.5 million)
    Johnson(12 million)
    Dzagoev/Eriksen/Hamsik(20 million)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Jamie i Have a request- is there anything you can do(a phone call perhaps) to convince eriksen, not sigurdsson can revive liverpool's midfield. I am convinced this guy can be as good as gerrard. Best of all he has winning mentality, which very few liverpool players have.

  15. I will be very disappointed if Powell of Crewe gpoes to Man U for £4 million especially if he is an LFC Supporter - This is what the Daily Mail is quoting and we will be kicking ourselves as Fergie will be laughing all the way to the bank

  16. You insinuate that Carra obviously cannot mention players still here.
And that you are sure there are players still in the squad

    Evidence please not opinions

  17. Who can blame them really ? Liverpool was a sinking ship. The sale of Alonso destroyed Liverpools ambitions. Masch, Torres and Alonso would still be Liverpool players in a top team if the club had done the right things instead of unarm themself. Have a good feeling about Brendan. YNWA

  18. Carra of all people should not be trusted as the whole team was not happy with the appointment, that includes Gerro too.  I remember Agger complaining about having to hoof the ball forward, which is surely Carra's game.  Roy was never meant for us, thats no secret, the H&G circus did cause players to leave, ps. did Mach not leave earlier? do not recall.  There is no way that Carra can refer to current players as that will be considered over-the-top, dimoralising and disrespect for other professionals, remember Rooney saying if the Manchs did not buy new players he would move? Is Carra implying that he did well? then he should have stated that when we got rid of Roy for KD. I find this trend of writing autobiographies at an early age quick silly, if he is commenting on current players then we do not need him, as that will have a serious negative impact on the other players, at this time we do not need that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, Agger was one for a start and he wasn't shy about saying so, at the time either, so they haven't ALL left. I'd say Reina would be one, as well - "IMHO" and I wouldn't bet against Gerrard & Carragher, either - "IMHO"

  22. Is this the same Carrager who did exactly the same to Benitez. In his last season as Lfc mngr Mr Liverpool as people r calling him LET BENITEZ DOWN. So his a HYPOCRITE and two faced F****r. The quicker he moves on the better.

  28. No. Read the comment policy. If you or anyone else constantly snipes just for the sake of it then your comments will be deleted. Like it or lump it.

The idea that I delete comments that disagree with me is just silly. Look around - you may have noticed that the majority of comments disagree with my views. Why do they stay live? People who debate in the right way are welcome; snipers are not.

  29. Maybe he should have given Benitez a fair chance but of course, he is spanish so out he goes. I guess Carra's wife at least is happy and that is very important.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Carra is the last man that should talk about bad attitude. If Rafa had stayed then Carra wouldn't been given a new deal.

So he sorted that one out. Rafa had to go so the fat contract could be sorted out. He is a legend but also poison for the club.

    ReplyDelete
  31. i felt sorry for roy. torres became a miserable waste of space, more interested in getting fit for spain and a move away. mascherano lost interest, blaming the fact his wife couldn't settle. fair enough, a couple of his signings were shite and didn't help him, but he did bring meriles. he was let down by others too though. carra isn't xenophobic, just because he thinks the atmosphere improved with signings, some that happen to be from these shores. suarez isn't british, at least he wasn't the last time i looked!? a ridiculous thing to say.

  38. And Jamie and Gerrard let Rafa Benites down.

    ReplyDelete
  39. There's a video on youtube of Gerrard missing a penalty kick on purpose vs Blackburn. It was pivotal in the sacking of Hodgson.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Cara for me has been a good servant for our club and if he wishes to rubish other team mates than he really needs to take a hard look at himself first and even then don't comment.
If he wishes to comment about not being happy about some of the decisions the club has made then that is fine, when you comment about other players especially when the whole team under performed is just stupid.
If he is refering to Reina than he needs to relize that Pepe could have played anywhere he wanted in England but he stayed at LFC even while trying to break into the Spanish team.
I have been guilty of criticing players on here in the past but i have come to relize that, thats all we can do because i am so frastrated about what has happened to our mighty club, if BR is the right manager for us than so be it i will be greatful, (i still wanted LVG or AVB) we will all support LFC thats what we do.
I think all current and past players should really take a good look back and say well did i do everything right, if not then hold your tongue and support the club, Cara,Suarez,Pepe and anyone else, then maybe they can concentrate on football.
I still think that Hendo needs to be loaned out next season to find himself.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Carra forgot to mention SG and his questionable missed penalty against Blackburn Rovers on 5 January 2011( when we lost 3-1).That being the last match for Roy .

Roy gave Carra an improved extended contract on Oct 2010 while being 33 yrs old and the club on verge of administration.Yet people talk about Kuyt and Maxi wage bill and forget Carra while the former two are more valuable to the team in terms of performance.

    ReplyDelete
  42. the old cliche shape up or ship out still applies. I am sure BR will make sure of that and give everyone a chance to prove themselves, who knows maybe can can teach Hendo on how to pass the ball forward

    ReplyDelete
  43. Maybe the atmosphere is better without certain players constantly sniping from within and less to do with Britishness. Torres and co. If only Pepe could be more professional and put in some effort, even if it's too late for Kenny.

  48. Whats with the name calling. Jamie maybe a legend, but he's past his prime. He made Rafa look bad, as most goals came during Rafa's last season. To me, looks like he got rid of Rafa. He never liked him, and he never got along with the foreign players.

    ReplyDelete
  49. he's no hero of mine.
good player over the years but his best days are behind him and he isn't able to adapt the way hyypia could when his legs went.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Spot on...and the reason why he's sucking up to hodgson is cos hodgson gave him a new contract when he clearly didn't deserve one.

Reason hodgson gave him a new deal was to get him on his side.

Carra was at best an average player whom Hypia carried for years and that's reality he was at best 5th 6th choice England defender

  54. hows in xenophobic to like to see young players coming through your club to be your national teams stars, is everyone hoping their country does well xenophobic, is it xenophobic to say its good to have a laugh with your team mates who understand your language and sense of humor unlike half the foreign players who dont bother intragrating properly which was a big problem at liverpool especially with benitez and all the spanish/spanish speaking players,

    ReplyDelete
  55.  Its Xenophobic because he isnt ashamed of his family , his neighbors , his friends , Bootle , Liverpool , England , Britain & his skin tone ... apparently .

    ReplyDelete
  56. Jamie , I'm not entirely disagreeing with you but I can see both sides of the scenario & how things may have transpired .

To be part of a talented squad that had promised so much , then failed to deliver & then decided to replace the manager in the hope of reigniting them only to see that manager be the less than inspirational Hodgson with his "Back to Basics" approach must have ben very difficult for players of a certain standard , those who has played in & won European Championships Finals , World Cup finals , Champions League Finals etc etc .

"Soul destroying" is the phrase that springs to mind .

I'm not so sure if its so much that they outright decided to betray anyone or thing , I think it was just impossible for them to lower their personal standards & unlearn the level of the game they were educated all their lives in .

Hodgson definitely is a capable manager but he definitely wasnt the right man for the job at that time .

Perhaps Carra was mis quoted or the context was manipulated but he has been around for long enough to know the score & that things are rarely as cut & dried or as simple as some would like to make out .

The reason Dalglish provoked an almost instant turn around with them is because he played at the same level & won the same prizes as them , he could effortlessly communicate his philosophy’s & transfer his experience in a way that cant fail to be respected .

Where Hodgson is more regimented Kenny both allows & encouraeges artistic expression but within a rock solid tactical framework & when you can blend your artists with soldiers magic happens , players like Suarez , Barnes ,  Maxi , Beardsley & Wilcox loved playing for Kenny because he structured the tactical side of the game to free them up express their creativity .

If football is a universal language then Hodgson speaks pidgin English while Kenny is a poet .

One way or another the job was too big for Hodgson in the circumstances .

Sadly , I rate Hodgson more competent & more suited the the LFC job than Rodgers is .

I dont think treachery or mutiny is on the cards I think there’s going to be another big failure to communicate which will inevitably lead to heads dropping , results suffering & personnel changing once again .

He's no hero of mine either.  Like you said he's been a good player but managers shouldn't have to come in and kiss the arse of Carra and Gerrard.  They are a cloud hovering over LFC at the moment that Fergie would have shipped out years ago in the best interests of keeping all power firmly in his own hands.  It leads to titles.

Hyypia never had any legs....ever! By far the slowest CB I have ever seen BUT never once (ok maybe oonce or twice) did you see him get blown for pace.  He read the game like a book and never flinched when players with pace ran at him.  As soon as you thought he was beaten out came a trusty foot to take out man and ball.  Poetry in motion.

Carra has always been last ditch.  Which essentially means he reacts to situations rather than reading.  That slight yard of pace he had was crucial to him.  He is an example of a player who doesn't quite have the intelligence to adapt his game the way Mcgrath or a Rio Ferdinand will do.

Genuine question.  Yes or no answer. Do you still rate Downing as better than Ribery? I notice he wasn't on your list of artists.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I wouldnt swap Downing for anybody at this time .

I'm delighted with the leader ship & reliable consistency of him & Charlie Adam in particular , both curtailed their instinctive attacking games to adjust to the team ethic in place which seen their arival turn a relegation threatened squad only the season before they arrived transformed into the third tightest defense in the league .

Some might assume that impressive fact would have arisen  at the cost of our attacking flair but we also created the 3'highest amount of goal scoring opportunity's this season & all our new signings played a very impressive role in our collective in doing so , particularly Adam who led the club in assists last season , Enrique who led the club in crosses delivered , Henderson who led the club in miles covered & Downing whos versatility , constant threat , disciplined creativity & mature use of the ball was vital to us achieving those impressive League Statistics , securing a return to European Competition after a years absence , Contesting two Cup Finals & ending a 6 year trophy drought in which he won the man of the Match in the Final ..

    Better than Ribery ?

For us , in our current circumstances ?

    Easily .

Downing is the best left sided midfielder we have had since John Barnes was moved into centre midfield .

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well, at last someone is actually hitting the nail on the head re our "problems" since rafa left.....Whether you like him or not Carra is right about this player attitude problem and it has affected our league form and consequent fall from grace.

Im glad Carra has spoken out and im seriously amazed at the contempt with which some fan hold Carra in, all this bullshit about his disloyalty to rafa etc like making him out to be the bad guy (along with Gerrard) just because he wasn't all that keen on rafa's methods of unsettling players or whatever, personally he has my sympathies for having to endure such a manager as rafa....

Point is though that we do have issue's within the squad still and its time to surgically remove them if need be once and for all.....

Rogers deserves a fair chance to prove himself, what he or we don't need is ANY players who are not happy....

Time to move on, bring in new players and replace whoever needs to be replaced.
