£30m LFC target admits: I spoke with Alonso & Torres about UK move...

Liverpool football club's long-standing interest in Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente is an open secret, with the Spanish striker confirming last year that representatives from Anfield 'came to Bilbao' to negotiate a possible transfer. Llorente recently insisted that he was 'very focused' at Bilbao, but his latest comments seem to suggest that he has his eyes firmly fixed on a move to the Premier League.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday at Spain's Euro 2012 training base, Llorente was asked about the possibility of a summer move to the Premier League, to which he responded:

"I might end up playing in England. I am currently in Bilbao, but who knows what happens. Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres has told me about the great respect that the fans have for the players there"."

Whilst it seems unlikely at this stage that Liverpool would be in with a chance of signing the prolific striker, let's hope Alonso and Torres put in a good word for the Reds, so when the time comes, Llorente at least considers Anfield as a possible destination.

Would the club be able to afford him though? Llorente is currently valued around the 30m mark, but recent LFC managerial contender Roberto Martinez, the price for Llorente's services could reach £60m. He told The People recently:

"Whatever price you can afford to pay for Llorente you will have to double it. Otherwise they [Bilbao] won't sell him. If you go in with £30m they will want £60m. If the figure gets to £60m, then they can't stop him. He would be a great Premier League player".

  1. Welcome back Jaimie!
I thought you was also sacked with Kenny!

  2. no doubt Llorente is great player who would certainly improve our team. FSG have said they will support Rodgers but will he be willing to spend so much cash on 1 player when we need strengthening in several areas. BR probably needs to assess what he has got sell who he doesnt want and then move forward sensibly with player acquisitions.
You must have been on holiday as there has been such a gap between your articles, quite surprised your first one back has made no reference to Brendon Rodgers are you in agreement with his appointment or not ?

  3. Thanks. I had to take time out due to some unforeseen life issues.

  4. Welcome back. I personally do not think that we should make a move for Llorente. With someone like Carroll, who has a very similar physique with Llorente would not be wise. It would effectively mean that we have given up on his ability.

If we are to move for Llorente, then I would expect that we will try to offload Carroll.

Jaimie, can we expect regular articles now?

  5. Sometimes life gets in the way of the site. I'm definitely behind Rodgers - fantastic appointment IMO, and for the first time in years, I'm actually excited about the manager we have. I'll be writing something about it later.

  6. @Gujarati was thinking exactly the same thing so Jaimie what do you think of Brendan Rogers appointment?

  7. Who cares what jaimie has to say about Rodgers, if he had his way h&g would still be at the club, as according to him they were not loading the club with debt eb Jamie?

  8. and jaimie whats the point of this article? as if were going to sign Lloronte come on

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi David - Yes, there will be regular articles now.

This will not happen, but if it was down to me, I'd dump Carroll to the highest bidder and sign Llorente. Rodgers has repeatedly stated in interviews past and present that the number one necessity for players in his teams is technique, and Carroll is lacking in the department big time.

  11. dont expect any class player to come to lfc, who will attract rodgers? only swansea players or so, he even brought back cole , its the same like bringing poulsen back, I dont wanna judge now but i think rodgers will be the worst manager lfc ever had, im not happy at all with this appointment we have fallen too far now, its almost impossible to recover, we're going down and down everyday, hope im wrong but this is how i see things, a real mess.

  12. I have to disagree with this - I think Rodgers will be the best LFC manager in years. He's learned from the best, and his vast experience will stand him in good stead. Additionally, he has a very specific philosophy about football, and he's single-minded and strong enough to implement it.

One of the biggest things in his favour is that he has 150% backing from the Owners. Hodgson never had that under FSG; Benitez certainly never had that from H+G, and Dalglish lost that backing very quickly after taking over. This will strengthen Rodgers' position, and give him the leeway to do things his way. It means that players like Gerrard and Carragher (and any other big personalities in the team) won't be able to undermine the manager, which can only be a good thing.

  13. If we are to sign another striker which I think we will, I would say we need a pacy, direct player. Maybe Soldado or even Defoe. Llorente is a great player but we already have a target man striker with Carroll who improved greatly towards the end of last season. Liverpool need more pace injecting into the team.

  14. I  think the club have got to give him a go my expectations next season arent high and i think 5th may be a good finish i know its a bit early to be saying that but the higher teams are going to be even stronger.
I think if u are realistic i think in the fullness of time Rodgers can be a success we will see how cleverly he recruits that will be a start.

  15. I know you do not usually do this, but can you publish an article, talking about which areas of the team we need to strengthen in, and for some possible replacements for those positions?

  17. I think we could do a lot worse than sign city's Edin Dzeko.. Looks like city don't want/need him and given an extended stay in any team I'm convinced he would be banging them in. He's only turned 26 and has a point to prove. If we could get him for 15 to 20 mil I think we'd have ourselves a bargain.

  18. with a budget of only 30m, it would be unwise to blow it all on one player imo. as far as rodgers goes, make no bones about it, he was second choice to klopp, only klopp would not leave such a good project.
Let's see if rodgers can improve any of kenny's dross and keep luis and skrtel happy enough to want to stay. One things for sure, adam is on his bike. no way he'll play for rodgers, he gives the ball away far too much.

  19. Jamie,
As much as your articles either pee me off or make me laugh... I sincerely hope things are ok at your end.
    Anyway back to football....
Llorente..... would love to have him in the team... chances?... Id say Zero lol

  20. Do you think Liverpool are going to buy hulk a player I really want to see I Liverpool shirt his pace skill and ability on the ball something Liverpool lack

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jaimie, this could go down as your greatest ever post and, for once, I am in 100% agreement with you (apart from the '150% bit, that's mathematically impossible).

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think all the fans have the same problem, we support any manager who comes in no matter what his CV is, being honest rodgers never deserved this job, this job came as poor knowledge of the owners clearly, rodgers was sacked by reading years ago, that tells everything for me, and he has only 1 year experience in premier league, how on earth hes worthy of joining a club like lfc, but ok lets be the biggest positive persons on this earth and say we'll finish fourth with him and we go in CL, do rodgers have any minutes of experience in CL? how he'll cope with that? and as i said before he cant attract big players, like those who are joing city chelsea or manu. To sack a legend like kenny and appoint rodgers, the world was laughing loud that day, that was funny as hell, you can call me negative or anti lfc but thats the way i see things, whats the point of being positive like we be always and then archive nothing, for me this appointment is same as woy's, its a huge gamble and setback, its just the very wrong choice, and im sure he will get sacked after 10-15 games or even in january, the owners are killing us with their ignorance , they are not aware of how much damage they're doing to this club.

  23. All i want is top 4 this season and build for winning it next i hope man ushited start falling down the table as there team on paper is crap conpered to liverpools andthere players are 35+ apart from young and co we wanted last summer

  24. Roll on next season think its gonna be a good un , good luck BR , think he's gonna be a good un too

    ReplyDelete
  25. Fantastic! I'm excited about the appointment too. I've been commenting almost all of April and March how Swansea have been the only team aside from Man U who get 3-4 players into the box to meet the final ball. Hopefully we'll now see quality instead of just quantity where it comes to supposed goal scoring chances.

Having read some of the articles on Rodgers, it seems he is also a big fan of pressing high up as were Rafa and Mourinho, and like Rafa, he believes in keeping the ball too - except Rodgers prefers the ball to keep moving. I am relieved it is not Martinez and am looking forward to Rodgers' brand of football.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think under Rodgers, Carroll, Downing and Henderson will suddenly become very good. Don't see it happening for Adam though.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If Kenny wasn't your first choice who was JH? Sure as hell it wasn't Martinez or Rodgers! Perhaps AVB, Lippi or Klinnsman? Anyway I ask you to send a note of thanks for holding the fort whilst you made up your mind.

I'm just sorry that you didn't back Kenny with another £15m max. to procure the services of Jelavic and Dempsey - every manager is entitled to a couple of mistakes whilst he finds his feet after a long absence. Had you done so we would be in the 'top four' earning the Champions League big bucks next term rather than being resigned to purgatory.

Hope you have personal matters sorted JK. Was beginning to think you had given up in disgust or wining out with Rebecca Brookes.

  28. I haven't seen this much wishful thinking since Sean Dundee asserted that he was 'faster than Michael Owen' :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Totally agree. I haven't been excited about a new LFC manager since Roy Evans was in charge. With Houllier, Benitez, Hodgson and Dalglish, I had a sinking feeling the minute they took over (My defence of Hodgson is more to do with the way he was treated, not his suitability for the job). With Rodgers, it feels the opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  30. IMO, there's no chance Rodgers will get sacked after 15 games.  Having said that, he's got his work cut out getting LFC to play like Swansea.  A massive change in approach is required, and many of the club's players do have the technical ability required.

All it takes though is 2-3 players on Rodgers' wavelength to come into the team and show everyone how it's done, and he'll undoubtedly sign a few players over the summer, which will make the transition easier.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Would have been good if you had have been

    ReplyDelete
  32. Where have you been JK? I was of the same thought mate as RedHeart, anyway welcome back, there could be good news for us at the least.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The thing is, if we were all to think like that, we could only hire 50 year old managers and 30 year old players, since they'll mostly have the edge when it comes to experience. Obviously we don't do that. Just as with players, you also need to give managers the chance to prove themselves amongst the big boys.
Rodgers has shown a lot of promise with Swansea and I see no reason not to be as excited about him as I would be about a young player that dazzled for a lower league club. Actually, with coaches it's probably even easier to tell how good they actually are, because the job is very much about consistency. Rodgers has shown that his teams can deliver good results on a regular basis, which is something that can't be said for a lot of coaches.
With the right backing by owners and supporters, I don't see why Rodgers shouldn't be here to stay. Although I do feel like his summer moves need to be excellent, since that was the downfall for Dalglish. (And if it can get Kenny sacked, it can get anyone sacked)

  34. “There are three types of supporters at every club. Number one is those who, no matter who the manager is, they love their club and will love their manager whoever it is,” he explained.

“Here, Liverpool is their life and their passion, and that is who they are.

"The second group is those supporters who will accept you but to earn their real respect you will have to be successful - and that’s fine by me.

“The third group are the critics, and you never change them. Ever. If you win 4-0 it should have been five, if you win the league you should have won three.

“But I will never worry about that group, because you can never affect them. If you do a good job you are proving them right, but they can’t be proved wrong so they will kill you even more.”

JK you are in the 3rd group, Chip off your not needed

  38. In 2-3 seasons, the who's who of football will be wanting to play for Rodgers. If you've watched Swansea and saw what he managed with their players, think about what he can achieve with ours. Britton and Allen have got passing stats to rival Xavi and Iniesta - think about what the guy can do for more technically gifted players like Shelvey and Henderson.

For clueless players who let their feet do the talking - like Henderson and Downing, a manager like Rodgers who will tell them exactly what he expects of them can only make them more useful to the team.

  40. I just hope Liverpool don't end up just looking pretty. We played good enough football in 2011, but results were down the drain. Goals were hard to come by, tactics were rigid - there was Plan A or bust - the players we thought were good turned out to be a waste... Rodgers has a lot on his plate. I'd start with fixing the goals bit. And we definetely need to move on a few players IMO (Adam, Jones, Downing, Carragher, Maxi, Shelvey loan, Spearing loan, Flanno loan, Robinson loan). Get a striker, Get Joe Cole back, Get Aquaman back and please don't loan him out again - he oozes quality, Get an Attacking midfielder - with Raheem as cover - to play on the right to replace Kuyt, and Get a Defensive midfielder OR try Martin Kelly out there -  good on the ball, can tackle, can pass, grt positional sense (what more do you need?). The core at Liverpool is not bad, and with the clearup above, we'd add 12 - 15 million to the (reported) 30 Million budget. That should be good enough for a proven striker and an attacking midfielder. I would get the defensive midfielder for free if I could - ideally a loan player - unless his name is Yann M'Villa, in which case you justify paying a premium.

  41. Llorente never even mentioned Liverpool.  He's happened to speak to two of his good friends in the Spanish squad who happened to play for Liverpool in the past.  If it were about Liverpool, why would he not speak with Reina? One has picked up a bone an run off with it!

  43. Hey JK. Hope everything's groovy.
We NEED to get some players who, besides being able to master the basics of passing and moving, actually have the ability to think on their feet.
It's all very well banging on about the manager's tactics, but when they're in the middle of the pitch and it ain't working they ought to be able to work it out for themselves.
Take the semi of the CC at the Etihad last season. The back four wasKelly @RB, two CBs (I forget who) & Johnson @LB . KD sticks on Aurelio (or Enrique?) in place of a 'winger' and Gerrad & Johnson spend 5 minutes scratching their heads, ending up with Gerrard going to the touchline to ask KD. FFS it was obvious - Kelly inside to a three man CB, Johnson to RB and Aurelio to LB. We were 1-0 at the Etihad with ten minutes to go!!! It was obvious to me and I was listening to it on the radio!

I also think BR will do a good job, but it's going to take a long time. I think CL/Top 4 will be at least 3 or 4 seasons away, and winning the league at least 10. The owners need to be patient or it's going nowhere. I hear he's a stickler for players conducting themselves properly on & off the pitch, as well. Downing, Suarez... I'd say you WILL be warned.

  44. Enough of Dalglishesque emotion.Carrol is technically poor much like Heskey.

Jaimie, welcome back n hope to read your take on Brendan Rodgers soon.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have been saying for quite some time that Fernando Llorente is built for the premier league. I personally think that he would be a great addition to the squad. What i dont understand is why bring him to the club, would automatically spell the end of Carroll. If you look at our squad, we have 2 out and out strikers and when Suarez got suspended last season, we clearly lacked cover. I dont think that bringing in another quailty striker will mean the end of anyone. If you look at the other top teams, they have several striking options in the squad, we clearly have only 2. I also dont agree that these two couldnt play togehter if they had to. I for one, would love to see Rogers make a move to bring in another quality striker. Not sure if Llorente is going to be that guy at the moment, but why not???

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Jamie welcome back, hope all is well.
I am not as optimistic about Rodgers, because for one yes Swansea did well, staying up (mid table) but i believe as much as a manager has his part in the football i believe it's the players that perform because of their ability or hunger to be there that makes the difference. About 80% of managers like to play attacking football because lets face it if you don't attack then how do you score, Rodgers for me will do ok but as for the next big thing i really don't see it, i know he has a good football philosophy but so does LVG, AVB, not to mention the rest.
Martinez had something to do with Swansea before Rodgers got there, now i could be wrong and i pray i am, he now wants to bring in 3 players from Swansea which for me would be a mistake, because Swansea did what they did because they played well with each other, not because of a couple of guys.
Just to finish would everyone please stop referring to Swansea's style of football as the Barca style because we all no that's a load of crap and why can't it be like Man City FFS they played attacking football, now someone above is saying the passing ability (on Rodgers targets) rivals Xavi and Iniesta, PLEASE i like to be optimistic but there is something called reality and my friend you do not live there.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I totally agree with you Jamie. I'm also excited!
Now I'm hoping that silly season will be loads better than last summer, which was disastrous! (with Enrique the only exception)

Welcome back, Jaimie. Nice to see some friendly comments pointed in your direction instead of the usual brickbats! Brendan Rogers was not one of my top selections, but then I was aiming very high. Guardiola and Klopp for instance. That said, I am more than prepared to give him 100% backing. I sincerely hope that certain factions will also give him their unequivocal  support and not subject him to churlish abuse just because their own candidate wasn't selected. So far Brendan Rogers has said all the right things, and it is a pleasure to be able to watch an interview with a Liverpool manager at press interviews without having to cringe with embarrassment at stupid and inane comments being thrown about.                                                                                                  I would like to see Llorente play for LFC but I think that the figures being thrown around will deter FSG. We still need a winger and the price for Allefay doesn't look overly expensive.                                                     I really do hope that Brendan is a success. If by December we are in the top six, are still in the Europa League and the Carling Cup, ( or what ever the new name is), and playing exciting and entertaining football, I, for one, will be extremely pleased .

  49. I would totally try and buy cavani. i think suarez could sway him and altho we would have to fork out 30 million it would be value for money as it would convince suarez to stay aswell as give us a proven goal machine. i would play carroll up front with cavani and suarez supporting him in a 3 prong attack ....
    Reina
    kelly skrtel agger
    Lucas
    johnson gerrard sigurdsson
    suarez cavani
    carroll

    Doni.Cole. Aquilani.henderson. downing. stirling.enrique.coates. carragher.shelvey
dont bite my head off just an idea.... would really like to see these 3 upfront i think cavani would bring best out of carroll and suarez ynwa

  50. I think Raheem Sterling could run amok if given a chance in a passing side like the one we hope to build..the young lads were only being drip fed chances in a stagnant team second half of season

  51. Hi mate,

U are certainly wrong that he wants to bring in 3 Swansea players. Why? Because he cant. Because there is a player protection clause that was added in the compensation agreement which stated that Liverpool will not be allowed to make transfer bids for any players at Liberty Stadium for next 12 months. And before u jump to the rumours that BR wants to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson though hes a Swansea player, I'd say that he has every right to sign coz GS was on loan at Swansea and Swansea don't owe him.

  57. ha i remember that, a ridiculous comment, i laughed then and now. Downing and Henderson i think will come good, and i would have thought the same with Carrol but his abilities are not suited (and not good enough) for Rodgers style. We may have to cut our losses. However i still like Carrol

    ReplyDelete
  58. welcome back JK, missed your controversy

I think it's a bit strange that everyone seems to think that we were'nt playing decent football under Kenny, plenty of tiki taka to my eyes. Still down to needing an additional striker, well actually a proper striker, as we have the target man and the deep seated attacker. Now Dirk's gone we probably need 2 strikers. Dempsey should only be the back up option, I reckon Gomez could be available from Bayern if Dzeko is on his way there

    ReplyDelete
  59. Wow! Florian i must say that was very insightful comment. I like your take on the new Liverpool manager. Hakeem (who made the initial comment which you responded to) like many other Liverpool fans wants to see a more competitive Liverpool competing for all the major honors sooner more than later. Change definitely had to happen at Anfield and it had to start at the top which it did when we lost a club legend in Kenny Daglish as our manager.

The debate at the moment whether a younger man who is not as accomplished or experienced a manager can be trusted to lead Liverpool to the lofty heights that she wants to go this season is an interesting one and one that i find very fascinating indeed.

For the record i want to say that my first choice as manager was Mark Hughes a man who wasn't even in the running for the Liverpool post . I wanted him because i liked his work at Man city before he was axed there. He has managed some really big personalities and has been around in the PL for a long time. I felt that Liverpool Fc would have benefited with his experience. The owners however were looking for a younger more charismatic manager someone who could    introduce new exciting tactics. I think they wanted a young player who would get our team to play attractive , attacking some might even say a beautiful form of foot-ball. They may have been inspired by the likes of Pep Gaurdiola of Barcalona , and a few other younger exciting managers  out there. When the job was offered to Roberto Martinez I have to admit that i was a little bit excited because i see him as a great manager who is capable of inspiring average players to greatness. Which is just what he did when he when he got Wigan to finally wake up and play the best foot-ball of their lives to avoid the drop. I think if he had had more money to spend he could have done more with his team. I think it is much harder to fight relegation and beat it from near the bottom of the table with a mediocre team than to win the league with a team stock full of talent.

Finally back to Brandon Rodgers who accepted the Liverpool job when it was clear than Martinez turned the job down. I think that like Florian has mentioned Rodgers could very well succeed at the Kop. He will definately enjoy much better support from the owners  who would be more willing to spend freely when they feel confident that their manager will spend their money on legitimate targets for the club. He may have been fired from Reading after a disappointing time there but he has has shown that he learned some lessons from his time at the club by what you saw him do at the Swansea. Swansea clearly  a team with a smaller budget than Liverpool. and really no major marquee stand out star out performed the reds in my opinion this season. Rodgers's basic philosophy is to simply out posses the opposition which is exactly what teams like Barcalona and Real Madrid try to do. When ever a member of their team has the ball his team mates follow him to give him two to three options of other people to pass the ball to. When they attack they attack in a wave and they defend in a wave. So the ball is for ever being passed around amongst them selves and after they have got the opposition chasing the ball the opposition always leaves spaces that can be exploited by the attacking team. This concept which is by no means revolutionary was employed by Swansea to some extent last season and i would welcome it at Anfield by all means. A more attacking style of foot-ball would increase our goal tally for sure. I think that the Rodgers signing is a good thing for Liverpool and I believe that we can eventually become as competitive as we once were before.

    ReplyDelete
  60. 'Prolific' is not the term I would use for DK. Kuyt was a workhorse who sometimes could put the ball in the net & sometimes that wasn't done too convincingly. But a true worker for LFC. For that we say thanks.

Jamie I am surprised that you would want Liverpool to buy Llorente when you have often spoken about how Liverpool need players that fit into a pass and move philosophy and should not be set up to accommodate Carroll.

  65. Couldn't have said it any better if I tried. Preach on bro

    ReplyDelete
  66. let's be practical here . I will openly come out on a limb and say that Llorente is not coming to Liverpool anytime soon. Not until we secure champions league foot-ball anyway.  Make no mistake the Liverpool that Alonso and Torres told him about was a thing of the past . We haven't been that team for a long time. If Rodgers can return us to something even close to that then Llorente and other players of his caliber might really be more tempted to come down. Right now this is nothing more than just talk

They had control and style and made Liverpool look like they were the newcomers to the PL. they played tight, neat crisp, short passing in mini diamond formations all over the pitch implementing killer diagonal balls. LFC played one dimensional football with no style apart from long ball with no movement into space. They were static. Now BR has come in you will start to see the players criticised for poor performances shine. Because we have more quality than Swansea and now we've got BR!! YNWA

  71. I just hope we don't end up like Roy Evans. Nice going forwards but a little bit to negligent in the back. There is always a balance.
Under Rafa, there were a couple of times we threw caution to the wind and drew 4-4 like when Arshavin scored a hattrick or the Chelsea game in a CL semi final. We always kept it tight in the league though. It will be interesting to see if we can get a good balance.

  72. Firstly mate i am not wrong that he wants to sign these players, not to mention i'm not jumping to anything it has been reported several times and lastly i never said he doesn't have that right so before you reply to my opinion and thats all it was, you should read what i had actually said.
How do we know that he does't have some other private agreement that he will sign players if they hand in a transfer request as the guy below has pointed out, so in turn he gives Swansea some business where they stand to make a very good profit, not of Gylfi but others that he might be interested in.

  73. The thing is even if a Swansea player hands in a transfer request to come to Liverpool, ultimately LFC will be making a transfer bid for that player, which will again contradict that clause statement. That's why I said no Swansea player can come to LFC, unless u go around that statement by invoking a release clause for the player.

  74. Good call re Llorente JK, i agree that it is quite exciting re Rogers also, wasn't sure if our owners would cave in to the pressure of going for a big name manager etc, hopefully we can finally move the Club forwards....

I must admit to still wanting Carroll to come good for us, not sure if/how Rogers will accomodate him, should be a very interesting summer though re player transfers etc.

  75. Mate you don't get it do you
    1) whether he can or can't, he still wants those players so your wrong.
    2) i never made this up it has been reported.
the whole Gylfi thing is not made up he said it himself, so i'm not starting rumours, they have already happened.
    3) finally i never said he does not have the right to sign who he wants, i just don't like the players he wants (ACCORDING TO REPORTS) and that's my right OK.
