At the beginning of this year, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez served an 8-game ban as punishment for using the word 'negro' in an onfield exchange with Man United defender Patrice Evra. Since then, several similar incidents have come to light, the latest of which involves Real Madrid loanee Royston Drenthe, who has accused the world's best player of repeatedly calling him 'negro'.
In the new edition of Heroes magazine, Drenthe - who played against Barcelona's Lionel Messi many times during his time in La Liga - revealed that he was upset by the Argentinean's frequent use of the word 'negro' towards him. He said:
"I played against him [Messi] many times and we always have problems with each other. You know what upset me though? That way he always called me "negro, negro. For example, When I was on loan at Hercules Alicante, we played Barcelona. During the game, I had a small altercation with him [Messi] because, he called me 'negro' a few times "
"I understand that negro in South America is very common, but we can not stand it. Mahamadou Diarra, my teammate at Real, would explode if someone said negro him. The Argentinean Gabriel Heinze and Gonzalo Higuain said it initially on the training of Real, but they were stopped."
It's interesting to note Madrid's response to its players using the word 'negro'. As Drenthe says, Heinze and Higuain were 'stopped' from using the word, which suggests management intervention, and a sensitivity to the possible negative connotations of the word.
If only Liverpool had responded in the same way. If the club had been MORE culturally aware and LESS blasé about the use of the word prior to the Evra incident, then the entire unsavoury incident could've been avoided. In his witness statement, Suarez freely admitted that he used the word 'negro' when refering to Glen Johnson:
FA REPORT - Section 258:
"I used the word negro, as I said in the interview, in the same way that I do when I talk to Glen Johnson".
This was confirmed once again later in the report:
FA REPORT - Section 352:
"He is familiar with this use of the word from his upbringing in Uruguay. He said he uses it in this way when speaking to other black players in England, such as when he says "Just pass the ball, negro" to Glen Johnson"
If Suarez routinely referred to Johnson as 'Negro' on the pitch or in training then it's probable that Liverpool's management and players heard him use the word.
With that in mind, why didn't a senior player (or member of the management team) take Suarez aside and explain the offensive connotations of the word 'negro'? Surely *someone* should've had the wisdom and foresight to see that problems could potentially arise if the word was used in the wrong context?
It's incredible that Suarez was allowed to swan around Anfield spouting a word like 'Negro' unchallenged, and as a result of Liverpool's tacit acceptance of this, the Uruguayan probably felt that it was okay to say it on the pitch.
If someone at Liverpool had actually taken some responsibility and made it clear to Suarez that 'Negro' shouldn't be uttered in any context, then the whole Evra situation could possibly have been avoided.
Ultimately, it seems that top players like Messi and Higuain are just as ignorant as as everyone else involved in football, which is depressing to see.

Thank god you aren't criticizing suarez again. It seems as thought he was really unaware using this word would be of such bad consequence. So i don't think the ban he got was fair. It seems in South America they actually use this word. Liverpool FC as a club should have stopped him if they heard him, and explained to him he was wrong.
ReplyDeleteBTW what a performance by Suarez last nite and also carroll, hope they form a fearsome partnership next season.
Why can't you just get over it and focus on the Fact Old Red Nose and the Lying cheat Evra caused all the trouble, and cost us too many points. What is needed is to return the favour.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't you stop misunderstanding the point of the article?
ReplyDeleteThe point of your article is just to have a go (again) at Kenny and LFC management
ReplyDeleteI hope people stop labelling Suarez as a' RACIST' .He never denied using the word 'negro' which shows that he was not hiding anything but he was a victim of his own ignorance. I hope he has learnt his lesson albeit , the hard way. Lets get behind him and enjoy his football. YNWA
ReplyDeleteIf Heinze used to say it, I wonder how it was dealt with by Fergie when he was at Old Trafford.
ReplyDeleteThe word negro in English is not only pronounced differently it is a different word when used in Spanish. Just because a word has culturally means something different in Europe than south America does not make it a racial word when spoke in Spanish. It is only the English ingnorance of foreign language and our own racist paranoia that cause the Suarez incident to be made into a racist issue by the left wing media. the fact that evra played with heinze at united must have been exposed to the language that he was supposedly so upset by, leaving the assumption that he wasn't offended by Suarez but want to create a problem for Liverpool & Suarez.
ReplyDeleteI guess Liverpool and Suarez will never be allowed to move on from this sorry chapter. Even Frank Warren brought it up the other day as he was trying to justify staging the Haye v Chisora fight. After a great match last night, timely article...
ReplyDeleteWhen in Rome, do as the Romans do, not as the Uruguayans do. Suarez wasn't in Uruguay, so if anyone is to be accused of ignorance, its him.
ReplyDeleteWe do you having another go at luis suarez and lfc
ReplyDeleteI am certain Benitez and the large Spanish speaking contingent previously at the club would of been culturally aware of it.
ReplyDeletePeople from the Latin Countries and Eastern Europe are far far more racist than we are.
I was in Dubai recently and the racism shown by the local Arabs to the Indians and Pakistani's is rife. In Japan regarded as the mos racist country in the world it is toward White people.
Anyway I am sure David Moyes has called Royston Drenthe far worse words than Negro recently.
Its been a shambles, the way the club had handled the Suarez situation from start to finish, though not helped by Suarez either. Expected better, much better from the club, especially in terms of professionalism. That statement they put out was the rambling of a immature forum poster.
ReplyDeleteEVRA ACTUALLY STATED HE DID NOT THINK SUAREZ WAS RACIST. HE ALSO ADMITTED HE ABUSED SUAREZ IN SPANISH. NOW, TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT, HOWEVER, WE HAVE AN ENGLISHMAN WHO IS THE SUBJECT OF A CPS CASE. I THINK IF SUAREZ WAS AS MUCH OF A DISGRACE AND PARIAH AS HE WAS MADE OUT TO BE,HE WOULD HAVE LIED THROUGH HIS TEETH AND DENIED EVERYTHING. THE FACT HE OPENLY ADMITTED WHAT HE SAID, WITH, IMO, GENUINE SURPRISE, THAT IT WAS CONSIDERED ABHORRENT IN THIS COUNTRY,LEADS ME TO BELIEVE HE WAS MADE AN EXAMPLE OF IN A HARSH WAY. MR. TERRY ON THE OTHER HAND, KNOWS VERY WELL WHAT IS ACCEPTED AND WHAT ISN'T, YET HE OPENLY AND ,AGAIN IMO, CLEARLY, ABUSED ANTON FERDINAND. WHAT IS THE BETTING HE GETS AWAY WITH IT? EVRA WAS VERY CLEVER WITH HIS ' DROP OF THE HAND ' DURING THE HANDSHAKE, BUT AGAIN SUAREZ IS TORN APART OVER IT. THE SUAREZ/EVRA CASE IS DONE NOW, MOVE ON. ABUSE OR BULLYING OF ANY KIND IN ANY FORM IS OUT OF ORDER, AND HAVING PLAYED FOOTY TO A RELATIVELY HIGH LEVEL, I KNOW WHAT GOES ON, SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO ACCEPT PEOPLE ARE WHAT THEY ARE.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness what kind of obsession. The case of the fan allegedly abusing Adeyemi was dropped by the police after they revealed the fan had used the wording Mancs bast*rd instead originally deemed wording black bast*rd.
ReplyDeleteSo if the reference to the color which is btw indisputable is not there everything seems to be in a good order. But what is the meaning of the other word? Bast*ard could mean "begotten and born out of lawful matrimony; illegitimate.". Hence using this word is a clear and straightforward insult to the parents of the target. But the Adeyemi and other cases (ManUre fan at OT addressing SG as Scouse bast*rd) prove that is is perfectly legal to insult people's parents. But if one says that the other party is black (or coloured like Alan Hansen) everybody is on alert. Don't you think that UK society is sick? Maybe bad conscience? Remember that Uruguay fielded a black player in the national team long ago, when it was deemed impossible in the UK.
If you don't like it, go to some other site.
ReplyDeleteI hope Roy Hodgson does not pick Terry in the Euro squad, if he saw last nights performance he wont, imagine what Spain would do to us with Terry at centre half.
ReplyDeleteAs for Suarez he committed the crime and he has done the time.
We need to move on the matter is now closed and why are we going on about it still.
Suarez has been in Europe for a long time now, an unless he's an idiot he should know saying that is wrong. This statement kind of backs him but blames the club (and yes the club should have acted), but suarez is a racist! Even in his home country saying it might be more acceptable but they are still referring to the times of slavery.
ReplyDeleteTHE ENGLISH KNOW NOTHING ABOUT NEGRO,PLEASE JUST SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH.
ReplyDeleteWhy so rude. Am I not allowed to state my opinion? Furthermore. I do read other sites.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't you move on? Why keep dragging it up? However you want to look at it he called him a name, get over it. The club could've acted better but they didn't and I'm sure a lesson has been learnt. Move on move on move on.
ReplyDeleteIs this meant to be modern day journalism!!??
If you can't take it then go somewhere else. Read the article very slowly, over and over until you understand the point being made.
ReplyDeleteLet me guess, should we get the opportunity to sign MESSI or HIGUAIN in the summer we should knock them back as they will ruin the morals of what we stand for!! Atleast Suarez is in good company here though as a world class racially ignorant player
ReplyDeleteToys out the pram. Its my party. Shall I go on? Is there another point to having a comment section on a web site?
ReplyDeleteSo what's the outlining point you're trying to make? LFC's brand has taken a knock back to the clubs negligence.
ReplyDeletedue to the club's negligence*
ReplyDeleteState your opinion about football. If you want to moan about me/the site, go to RAWK or TIA and do it, where you will be welcomed with open arms.
ReplyDeleteHow on earth is it not a "racial word" when it is made in specific reference to a person's race? I can't understand why people continually ignore the fact that such words derive from a history of abuse, slavery and institutionalised racism. It may come as some surprise to you Peter, but Africans only arrived in South America as a result of the slave trade. The terms used to refer to them may have evolved into playful monikers, yet they reek of colonial abuses, and, consequently, should rightly be regarded as insult.
ReplyDeleteHis opinion was about the article you posted which, by the way, had nothing to do with football. Your journalistic qualities need addressing unless mediocrity is your goal.
ReplyDeleteIf I can't take what?
ReplyDeleteRead my comment over and over extremely slowly until you realise the point trying to be made, not just by myself may I add, is MOVE ON.
Its an old story recycled which is getting boring.
The outlining point is that the club needs to move on. Kenny and others have stated publicly that the situation could have been handled better by the club, apologies have been made (however genuine they were) and lessens have been learnt. Remember also, the facts of the case are still unknown.
ReplyDeleteThe LFC brand may have taken a knock, but does rehashing the story every now and then heal the wounds and move the club forward. No, it reminds the world of the whole ugly episode and prevents the club from elevating it's image.
because all you do is slate liverpool and r betta players an u call urself a liverpool fan jog on ya manc
ReplyDeletewell said peter lad
ReplyDeleteJaimie, no one is having a moan about you or the site, but it is a fact that if LFC are to move forward we must consign such negative episodes to the past (once lessons have been learnt). I am commenting on a football-related issue since you wrote about a football-related issue.
ReplyDeleteP.s. the only reason I mention about being rude is that you always champion your right to your own opinion, yet you seem to want to deny a right of opinion to those who disagree with you.
ReplyDeleteSimeon - that is just total nonsense. Look around: most people disagree with me. Why do their comments stay live? Simple - they express themselves in a civil manner. You moaned about the nature of the article; that has nothing to do with the issues being discussed.
ReplyDeleteJaimie k move on mate.. Saurez is not a racist, i anything he seems one of the nicest blokes in the league.. I absolutley love him.
ReplyDeleteI didn't say Suarez was racist.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that's exactly what Liverpool did(the same thing as Real), saying it was a sensitive word and could be misconstrued depending on the culture. Using the word doesn't automatically imply you are racist,(actions speak louder than words) I'm not naive enough to believe that everyday language i use or that is of no significance when i flipantly say it could have different connotations in other parts of the world. There's no perfect way of looking at it, you just have to judge it on a case by case basis and look at the circumstances, and a bit of understanding, communicate and not just accuse out of hand. Either way, jumping on that bandwagon and accusing people when you have no direct involvement is wrong. If you want to accuse someone of something as severe as racism, you probably need to have direct access to the situation and not just some hearsay from one party
ReplyDeleteI have not accused anyone of racism; I have merely relayed what Drenthe said in an interview, comments which are already in the public domain. Please post the section from the article where I accuse Messi or Higuain of racism. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteJaimie, I made a statement about the timing of the article, I didn't criticise the nature of the article, just commented that it was time to move on.
ReplyDeleteI agree that many of your commenters disagree with you, I have read many of your postings, but you have also told them to go elsewhere, which is undeniably rude.
Right - I'm rude for suggesting people go to a different site, but you neglect to mention the rudeness of people constantly hurling insults. Very selective perception you have there.
ReplyDeleteIf you think it's rude, then that's up to you. If people continue to bitch and moan and irrelevant stuff, I will continue telling them to go to other sites. Now, please stop this pointless exchange and focus on discussing football.
Guys, please, for the sake of LFC and what should be an improved 2012/2013 season, can we all just let this go now? Royston Drenthe is no saint, neither is Messi for that matter. They are just humans with human weaknesses. But as long as we continue to elevate footballers to an unnatural status, we we continue to be let down by their behaviour.
ReplyDeleteJust enjoy the game, forget the names.
Good point Jamie, this particular saga i found very disturbing for many reasons tbh.
ReplyDeleteAnd it does beg the question IF Suarez was knocking around Melwwod happily calling Glen Johnson a negro, then..
A) Why did Glen not complain about it....???
B) And why did the squad/senior players and perhpas even the manager kept quiet about it...???
What this doesn't do is pardon Suarez for being "honest" about it....which is something i find very depressing, in the same way that his "i would cheat for LFC" comments were so easily forgiven....
For sure, there are many questionable incidents that have taken place this somewhat troubled season....much i think has been kept behind closed doors, perhaps Suarez was considered too BIG at the Club to challenge...??? Perhaps this whole saga was a deliberate attempt to challenge the leadership of the Club...???
There are so many questions with no answers just hanging in the air, our inconsistent form this season being one of them.......but this incident was head and shoulders the most damaging to the Club's profile and ii think it also impacted quite heavily on our season too....
youre an idiot. this is just Jaimie feeble attempt at yet more negative LFC sentiment.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was as the players who were called it reacted badly to it in Spain so the management stepped in. There is no mention of Glen Johnson complaining about it? Glen even wore the t-shirts. Maybe Glen is just laid back and took it for how it was meant? I'm sure if Glen had complained it would have been dealt with internally and Suarez made aware he should not be using that word.
ReplyDeleteI guess it is all about interpretation which is why unless we are directly involved we will never know all the facts so shouldn't pass judgement.
great to see the boys actually enjoying themselves on tuesday, nice to see the kid get 10 min hope he starts last game.Lately i have been less than impressed with Stevie G,mainly because of injuries and poor team selection, but watching john terry on tues i could'nt help but wonder why he was playing,he clearly looked like he did'nt want to be there, chelsea fans deserve better.Imissed the previews to the game,so iwas wondering why Stevie G was'nt playing.(could he be going to chelsea?)
ReplyDeletePerhaps because in Spanish, it means black.
ReplyDeleteIn regard to the Jamie K naysayers:Do you not realise he just has an opinion just like you (entitled)and he wants to be heard, just like you.If you are offended by or dislike his opinions, then when you see his name on an article SKIP IT.
ReplyDeleteYes but surely IF Glen had just said to Suarez something like look i know your not a racist but IF you use that word in a match situation against another you are going to catch hell....and it will create a big shit storm at the Club....then surely Suarez would not have said it to Evra...???
ReplyDeleteBut then again, maybe he still would have....
You see its not about passing judgment its about asking questions.....i agree with Jamie that the whole saga could/should have been avoided...
We can only "move on" when we have answers to some of these questions....otherwise those questions will keep hanging over us like a dark cloud over the Club...
Well there is definitely rudeness on both sides. I wouldn't attribute it to you only.
ReplyDeleteTwo points i would make. Firstly, too much emphasis is being placed on the race issue, much more emphasis needs to be placed on respect between players. If you sort this out, hopefully the rest will follow. It's unbelievable that a player can be banned for 8 games for uttering the word negro (regardless of context), yet you can verbally abuse your opponent in all manner of derogatory ways and even physically assault your opponent without punishment. Not saying this behaviour is acceptable, I wouldn't tolerate it, however there is a bigger picture.
Secondly, as stated in my original post, we do all need to move on from these episodes if the club is to regain it's rightful place in the football hierarchy. As fans we dwell too much on former glories as much as recent failures/indiscretions. We don't need to do this, there are enough Man U fans to do this for us.
Wow what a topic, first can i just say that know matter what it has gone it is finished. Now someone said earlier that no one believes that Suarez is a racist what a crock of shit this whole incident is based on that word, he made a racist comment so probably everyone in England except most LFC fans think he is a racist.
ReplyDeleteI would just like to see the media print something in his defence because it is not ignorance when you are brought up in a world that allows this kind of language, when it is excepted your whole life and then excepted in a new country at your training ground (Glenn Johnson). I truly believe he was treated unfairly, he told the truth that it was excepted in his country even Gus Poyet said he felt that Suarez was hard done by because of their up bringing.
Anyway he is a super star, can we get Messi to partner Suarez next season lol.
Nice usermane....
ReplyDeletethat shut jaimie up well done
ReplyDeleteYEAH you like it iv'e tried to change so i don't upset the politically correct people out there in the world, but i am having some trouble mate.
ReplyDeleteWell said... and if Heinze used it then, Evra would have known the context of that word (being used by South Americans)... Therefore, Evra wanted to make this an issue, more than what it should have been...
ReplyDeletestupid
ReplyDeleteJK, wasn't this guy warned about his username before?
ReplyDeleteDon't have to be a fully fledged P.C. person to acknowledge what a derogatory term that is.
ReplyDeleteSo ALLEGEDLY you are having some trouble changing the name, so instead of deleting the account and using a new one, you continue to use this account? Righhhhht(!)
So you reply to me but address your question to Jamie, priceless. By the way clown Jamie and i are trying to fix this issue so why don't you have a coke and a smoke and shut the F$%k up so sook.
ReplyDeleteHey Mitzu where you from? By the way i have tried to change my username but i have been unsuccessful and Jamie is aware of the problem and is trying to work with to fix it ok originalchan this is for you too, no seriously though where are you from?
ReplyDeletefor a guy who claims to be a LFC supporter you don't half write some shit.
ReplyDeleteRose tinted views and glasses aside seriously get over yourself.
Were you a middle child? did you not get enough attention when you were growing up? I mean you write so much self serving tripe it's unreal.
I am not suggesting you start to write only the positives but come on keep it in perspective will you.
The race thing has been done and dusted, the ban served and fine paid now you either get behind the TEAM and move on or go support another team.
Your other article on retrospective punishment, i mean really Andy Carroll against NUFC and Essien last night is what you are comparing. Do you need glasses or just a clear chain of thought.
Lets look at it again shall we, AC over dramatic dive yellow card offence Essien two footed lunge/ride on AC's leg could have broken his leg red card offence. See the difference.
You know with SUPPORTERS like you who needs enemies.
move on
ReplyDeleteTell you what Jamie - I hardly ever agree with you - but you're spot on here!!!
ReplyDeleteNigger comes from the Greek word to blacken.
ReplyDeleteYou can't simply label words 'racial' or 'not racial'. It is too complex an issue and words depend on context for meaning.
In the sense that Suarez has used it, it is racial. That is not to say it is racist, but its meaning is linked to race.
The irony is that some people at Liverpool might not have wanted to offend Suarez by telling him his culture was, in effect, 'wrong' and let him get away with this. It is a shame, because as Jaimie said, this could and should have been nipped in the bud.
what would have happened if he had said the REAL N word, scary eh?
ReplyDeleteGet over it, it happened, its gone, why are you still bringing this up?
ReplyDeleteIs it just me jamie or do u intentionally play devils advocate to get more comments on this site? The real villains in the saga were Evra and Man Utd. did he not accuse a Chelsea groundsman of calling him racist names? Was there not an accusation of Steve Finnan at some point? Both unproved. And as i recall where was the proof the FA had on Suarez of finding him Guilty? Come on Look at the handshake dummy he sold Suarez at Old Trafford and then claims to be wronged. The man is a joke and seems to like to cry wolf. Now under no circumstances am i condoning Racism as it disgusts me but i do believe that anyone who plays the race card to gain advantage in a sport or any other walk of life is beneath contempt and equally as disgusting as a racist. LFC stood up for their player who imo is innocent and got crucified by the overly PC media as it was such a distasteful subject, Could u actually see the media rounding on evra over this? Not a chance in this country.
ReplyDeleteClearly if Messi, Higuain & Heinze, together with Suarez, all use the word so casually then it obviously has no negative connotations in South America so unless someone told them differently, as did Madrid, then they would be none the wiser that that it was offensive in other countries. Hence the cultural difference argument bears truth.
ReplyDeleteLike that you have highlighted the Drenthe interview as I had missed it and I think you are right and current to ask questions over LFC's handling of the situation. Moving on from a problem does not solve it, neither does saying we would have handled it differently with hindsight. If it's not acceptable at Real why was it at LFC? Why was there no intervention at management level? These are right and proper questions in my opinion. Maybe some of you will have a change of heart if we were to lose upcoming talents like sterling because of an issue like this.
ReplyDeleteI have been censored on this site many times. Maybe I need to change my profile pic.
ReplyDeleteYou didnt? Really?
ReplyDeleteYou know l have read every single previous post regarding this story and l would like to add my two cents to it. First let me put some perspective to my comment, l am a person of colour and l would like to make some very pertinent observations.
ReplyDeleteI am stunned that any self-respecting person would even be offended by the word negro, what actually does that word mean. From my understanding the word is a derivative of the Latin word "nigra" which means black which l believe is the word used colloquially to describe people of colour. This of course is a misnomer anyway in the same way as describing a caucasian as "white" however both words seem to have become the accepted labels but that's a whole other discussion so let's leave that alone.
Back to the main issue, I have to say l do agree with a number of people that have commented in saying this is now a very tired issue and really does not warrant the continued rehashing of the so called "racist abuse" meted out by Luis Suarez to Patrice Evra. Most racists (l don't say all as l imagine there's always an exception) when confronted would deny they are racists and will go as far as stating that they did not commit the offence they are accused of, so with this in mind doesn't it seem strange that LS stated he used the word "negro".
Frankly as a person with a brain in my head if someone were to call me a "negro" and l felt they were actually attempting to racially abuse me l think my initial reaction would be to burst into laughter, surely if you are a racist you could think up something a little more creative than that.
Racism is wrong and it rears its head in my forms, in ways most people who are not people who are not of colour wouldn't even remotely think about. A perfect example would be not sitting on the tube next to me because of the fear that l may rub off on you or maybe my colour signifies l am a thief so you would be putting yourself at risk of me stealing from you. Another would be the "idiot" (and here l use this word as a description as opposed to an insult) who thinks he is very clever using a username that is clearly offensive and racist, moreover in a forum where we are discussing amongst other things racism in football.
Jamie, l do clearly understand your motive behind posting this article in so far as Liverpool FC should have advised LS better in what was acceptable to say and not to say and make him understand that in British society use of such a word could be deemed as offensive even if the intent is not to offend. However like has also be pointed out, Evra (who l believe has played football in Spain) knows how that word can be used in Spanish and he could just as easily have resolved the situation privately rather than blow it way out of proportion to the extent that it has become national debate.
I would rather the FA and British society as a whole stop wasting time on palliatives and focus more on educating people about "black" issues, Afro/Caribbean culture and other ethnic groups as a means to create greater understanding and tolerance of other peoples. Maybe when we do that we will fully be able to rid ourselves of the scourge that is racism and we won't have such an unfortunate situation occur again.
Well said !
ReplyDeleteAs an Irishman whose country was invaded by Englishmen I find it insulting that England's brass band continually play 'Rule Britannia' at football matches. I don't hear any outcry from anyone about this though.
ReplyDeleteNo, and I never have done. I challenge you to post a snippet from any article where I've said Suarez is racist. I'm waiting...
ReplyDeleteIn latin countries more racist than english people? hahaha.
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans are the kings of racism. The colonizers of the world, and who began to trade black people as a commodity and free labor. They are who took the American Indians to be portrayed as monkeys in europeans zoos. Read a little more before doing such an incorrect assessment.
youre right he is in another land...he is in the kingdom of hypocrasy
ReplyDeleteStill waiting...
ReplyDeleteAs an Englishman whose country was invaded by the french I've always had a problem with how long Vanessa Paradis was allowed to have her number 1 hit Joe Le Taxi in the English charts but never really took offence to the cheeky girls due to them coming from Romania. I also find it really insulting when I hear people using this term at taxi ranks without concern for others around them.
ReplyDeleteAll this shows is that Suarez etc deem it ok to say negro to black people. In this country it isn't and Suarez was rightly punished for using it and if he says it again he'll have to leave the club. However, it's not for you to judge whether Johnson is ok with him saying it. After all, part of the original argument was that it can (in South America) be acceptable between friends.
ReplyDeleteAnd whilst I don't really want to drag this all up again, I will. Evra was and still is a liar. Suarez clearly didn't abuse him numerous times he said it to him once as he admitted and Evra exaggerated the rest to make his story look better. If it was as often as Evra said it was someone else would have heard or it would have been picked up on tv. Or, at the very least Evra would have got his story straight and not changed his mind 5 or 6 times.
King of Leinster actually invited the English in back in the 12th century. Complicated auld history!!
ReplyDeleteThe irony is amazing " Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
ReplyDeleteAlready banned this "publication" my internet; but alas this drivel from probably the worst liverpool "supporter" oozes though. Jamie do us all a favour mate and start supporting your club....Chelsea. If you cannot talk the criticism then stop writing
ReplyDeleteNot the point I was making as you know and regardless of the hypocrisy that happens in this country as well as all over the world, Suarez was ignorant at the very least with his use of 'negro'.
ReplyDeleteBut I suppose he could get away with murder in some fans' eyes and those fans would just blame something else.
From the UK, where such a term was used in derogatory manner in the 80s especially
ReplyDeleteI am sorry but does this not support the view that south american players use the word to describe black players without racial intent, if they are all saying it then it backs saurez up not condems him, so i thank JK to bring it to our attention, i take it messi will not be banned for 8 weeks.
ReplyDeleteRemember Evra never accused saurez of calling him a negro, i have read all 115 pages and evra thought he had been called a N******* , it was the FA that determined that the word negro was probably used, and that thye felt the word is could be deemed as racist although suarez may not as meant it as such,
in cival law its about probablity so it was deemed he probably said it more than once , it didnt require any proof and the report admits there is no proof but it was probable. that the differnece between saurez and Terry , terry beeds to be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
Again negative interpretation by the author of an LFC situation. Why not write an article praising performances of the players you've been slating Jamie, Carroll, Henderson, Shelvey......
ReplyDeleteThis artivle makes several assumptions of what may have happened on lfc training ground and how Suarez should have been pulled up by coaching staff. How about another scenario.......Suarez used the word and Johnson understands it's not racist in Suarez's native homeland or context used by Suarez and so isn't bothered by it and nobody bats an eye lid......
If its use is so common in international footy how come Evra hadn't experienced it before? He clearly had but chose to raise it on this occasion v Liverpool and by lfc's best player at the time. Wonder why......
oh plus Negro is not a racist word, it means black and black is also not a racist word, suarez was not taken to court becuase negro would not be classed as racist and that there were no witnesses.
ReplyDeletethe fa deemed it to be taken as a racist term but they are mistken but as a non legal court they can say any word is racist.
if negro is racist word then any word that means black is racist in every langaunge in the world including the word black. Noir in french, Negro in spanish, nero is italian you get my drift
Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro. Negro.
ReplyDeletekanwar, you are such an idiot. you always try and get people on to your site by using bug headlines. call yourself a fan your a ****house, you would go well working at the sun with your the rubbish reporting that you do.
ReplyDeletefor those who would not agree, id like to ask a question, if a black man does not mind being called a black man and he was bing talked to by a spanish man, what word does the spanish man say if he cant speak english, i personally hate the word black man and i am surprised its not a racist word, the colour of a persons skin is totally irrelevent, its man ! but if you can say black man how should a spanish speaking person say it ?
ReplyDeleteAre you genuinely suggesting that modern day Europeans are to blame for things that happened 200 years ago? Think a little more before making such a stupid comment.
ReplyDeletemore thrash your writing, get a life u manky manc supporter..
ReplyDeleteEejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit. Eejit.
ReplyDeleteCopy and paste is cool.
your as stupid as the arnie picture and the tormentor in chief of the pro benitez cult bull shit.. manky manc..
ReplyDeleteYou hated Suarez before he came to Anfield, you hate him while hes there, you constantly go an about anything to do with him that's bad I don't think I've ever seen a positive story from you about Suarez, Every time there is a story on the NewsNow feed that is attacking Liverpool or Suarez I know before hand, its you.
ReplyDeleteIf your so hellbent on eradicating cheats from the game maybe center on other teams as well and other players, you run a Liverpool hate site not fan site. But regardless before you tell me to go elsewhere I like reading your bile, its nice to see smart people arguing against your points and true Liverpool fan's.
I'm beginning to think someone at Liverpool FC did something to you did one of them have a bit of your better half or something?
And on a final note, if you went you Uruguay and said alakazam then got put in jail getting told your a racist, its not ignorance of not knowing is meaning in another language (because that's a bit of a dumb statement, to get past that "ignorance" you would have to have a complex understanding of every language on the planet) its simply a misunderstanding, if it had been a Wigan player or West Ham or even Chelsea (you don't hear people chanting John terry you know what you are) it would have had a couple of tabloid inch's a couple of online threads and gone but as its Liverpool, a mighty giant in the world of football they will keep going on and on about it, trying to chip away at Liverpool, trying to bring them that one step back down, because in England we love the underdog and will try and try to get them to the top, while at the same time trying to knock everyone at the top straight back down!
Christopher Evans
Your understanding is I'm sorry to say lacking and to say anyone who is offended by being called negro is without self respect astounding. That you have accepted the label "ethnic minority" lets me know how little time you have put into educating yourself or that you need pointing in the right direction as to what you should be studying. If you are indeed a person of colour (as you state), I suggest you learn "your" history or be just another Glen Johnson, which on the surface seems great but could be so much more.
ReplyDeleteWorth noting that Latin countries were also the last to ban recent slavery. Can I also ask if you've ever heard of the Roman Empire?
ReplyDeleteAwww you cut out all the good bits, I wasn't insulting you really, in all fairness most of what you write is hatred and attacks on LFC and I do see it as complete bile, but its where I come to read what smart people with actual intelligence have to say back to you.
ReplyDeleteAt no point am I insulting your Site or disagreeing with what you do I am simply stating facts
1. 99.9% of your columns are attacks on Liverpool players or Negative towards the club FACT
2. I Enjoy reading what people say back to you, Especially with the racism arguments you get so many intelligent black guys slamming your opinions of what racism is then usually argue with them that they are wrong lol FACT (That's not racism btw I needed to state the color of their skin for it to make sense FACT)
3. Judging by the mass disagreement you get from people in the racism argument and still not seeing the point, only seeing it from the position of an English speaking man id say i'm right in stating your not that smart... FACT
And this is to do with football, its to do with the argument you keep resurrecting about racism in football (sorry i mean about the one racist manin the EPL LS), the above is just me simply saying ... Your WRONG FACT
'negro' isn't exactly some obscure word. You don't have to have an 'complex understanding of every language' to know that. Suarez has been in Europe for a while. Only excuse Suarez could possibly have is that he is dumb, which wouldn't be a surprise.
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, everyone is out to get Liverpool(!)
Oh the paranoia
oh and on another note you should have called this thread, Luis Suarez is as good as Messi
ReplyDelete...... first line......
at being a racist
suarez was not banned for saying negro he was banned for the contect in which he said it, it is not illegal or racist to say the word negro in britain, that would be like saying you can't use the french word noir, but if you said noir bastard thats racist, its contect not the word, the panel found that the word was used in the heat of competition and therefore probably had negative and racial elements. but the word is not a racist word it just means black. You cannot just take the soanish word for black and say only the spanish word is racist and every other word for black is not ,
ReplyDeletemaybe you should be banned until such time as the offensive epithet can be removed. The fact that you chose this name for yourself says it all
ReplyDeleteas an Englishman whose country was invaded by the Vikings, I've always been offended by the original series of Master Mind being presented by Magnus Magnusson. The title of the show, coupled with the choice of host, clearly implies that the intruder Viking race was intellectually superior to the indigenous population.
ReplyDeletewe're all slaves to the great god Mammon
ReplyDeleteIf you were from Wigan and were not a racist, that would certainly get more than a couple of inches of tabloid storyline. The most racist people in the world! Don't believe me? The headquarters of Combat18 are in Wigan and the BNP has it's annual party conference in Wigan
ReplyDeletenegro is not a racist word but can be deemed to have a racial context is used improperly, but so can black
ReplyDeletewat is the point of it exactly?? were from england which is not like south american countrys?? no sh#t.
ReplyDeleteor we just thin skinned people?? i can say that cant i about skin being thin cant i??
i better stop calling my mate lilly legs, as i wouldnt want to be charged for something...................oh no hold on, he white, its ok
2 things. 1. Having lived for a long time in South America for a while, Negro is not a racist word and not taken in a racist context (see the picture of Argentinian players message to Fernando Caceras) - but I agree that they should assimilate it's meaning in the country they go to - likewise Drenthe at Madrid should understand the way it is said to him there (I'm not saying it was or wasn't in a racist manner - just if they are to assimilate so should he). 2. Real Madrid star??? Really? Real Madrid FLOP!! and if it was said why wait for so long to say anything?? When Spanish players are racist they will use other words (see Sergio Busquet at Marcelo) - not Negro.
ReplyDeleteJohnson wants Suarez gone from the club so he deliberately withheld that information.
ReplyDeleteoh.. and Sudaca is a very derogatory term!
ReplyDeletein argentina "negro" is used as a friendly word. we show respect and kindness. you can even can a blonde blue eyes negrito, as a form of getting someone's attention in a good way. an insult would be "negro de mierda" "mierda= shit"
ReplyDeleteSo, if you think he is not racist, why you dont like him?? The argument about cheating in the world cup is very very poor, because what he did is not cheating. If that is cheating EVERY SINGLE FOOTBALL PLAYER cheats. The situation was more extreme, thats it. He made a hand on purpose and got a red card. With all my respect, did you ever played football in an real league, 11 a side? Is a serious question.
ReplyDeletehaha niggers
ReplyDeleteSays what exactly? im sorry that you guys live in a country that is that serious you can not right something without having a probe rammed up your arse. Hey roadender am i offending you? which part? are you black? or are you Greek? i am both, black is a colour and well lets just say it can bring out the racist pricks out there so you know who you are really dealing with. For the last time i will change it as soon as i can. If this is not good enough i suggest you complain to Jamie again. I am sure you can find something more important to worry about or is just easier for you because you don't have to leave your chair?
ReplyDeleteThis is a prime example of how different cultures view things. His name is not offensive to me, in Australia a wog is used as a term for anyone from Europe, and being a blackwog is just saying he is a black euorpean.
ReplyDeleteBut you guys are getting all up in his grill cuz it means something completely different in your neck of the woods.
So who is right?????
im a bit astonished about the usage of negro word is deemed racist in the west.. in my native tongue the negro is common used to describe black people inmy country and im a malaysian. but for the more english educated personnel they would definitely know that word is deemed racist. I believe this all is about knowledge and ignorance. I strongly support JK suggestion that Suarez shld be properly advised but who might have anticipated that in the 1st place?? The irony is, the london based media did not pull any bashing towards messi as againts suarez.buch of hypocrites!!!
ReplyDeleteKanwar...you little Manc bastard! Can't you see Old Red Nose and Evra set up Suarez. And managed to derail our season! They knew who the real danger man was and managed to have him bad thanks to the FA which should in fact be called MUFC Junior!
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand of the initial exchange, and I could be wrong, wasn't it in Spanish? And didn't Evra use a racist slur first? Sure 'sudaca' carries a very different offensive weight than 'negro' when taken in the context of English. I didn't know what Sudaca meant and had to look it up, which brings me to ask why wasn't Evra punished for using racist language? Does it matter if Sudaca is an unknown term in English? Is Negro the only racist slur? I understand racism to include the use of a word in an abusive or derogatory way. If Evra did in fat say 'don't touch me Sudaca.' to which Suarez replied 'Porque Negro?' Isn't it a silly case of a racist slur for a racist slur?
ReplyDeleteI agree Suarez should have received some admonishment for using that word, ignorance ought not to be an excuse, but it appears that Evra took the word out of context and attached a derogatory meaning to it. Perhaps he was baiting Suarez, who took the bait and trapped himself with his response. To ban him for 'using racist language in a manner that wasn't insulting makes me question the integrity of the investigation, but then again,I don't have all the facts or the rationalisation for the decision. I'm just making an observation, not blaming Evra or blindly defending Suarez.
Drenthe has caused trouble where ever he has been, booted out of Real Madrid, booted out of Everton and walked out at Hercules.
ReplyDeleteHe is normally found boozing all hours at trendy Liverpool night clubs blaming everyone else for his woes.
He failed to show up to a vital training session prior to the FA Cup Semi Final and got the boot.
How many times has he played against Messi, because he hardly got a game for Real Madrid and they would never have got a game against Barcelona.I think this is all a made up story by a publicity hungry person.
For the umpteenth time, Evra did not accuse Steve Finnan or the Chelsea groundsman of racism. It is hardly secret who made those accusations but I suppose the truth doesn't support your agenda
ReplyDeleteNo conclusive proof at all that Evra played the race card to 'gain advantage', etc. I think to accuse someone (implied or explicit) of that without proof says more about in a negative manner and the childish tribal mentality of yours, than it does about Evra or Suarez.
Most people, bar a lot of my fellow Liverpool fans, most certainly did not see the handshake incident in the bemusing rose-tinted manner you saw it in.I swear Suarez could get away with murder, in some people's eyes on here. But I will leave it there as this is old ground as well as it annoys me how tribal and biased supporters get over their own players, regardless of how obvious how stupid it is to do so. Our reputation as a club has took a massive beating because of the way the club and fans in general behaved over the Suarez thing, because somehow they (non-Liverpool FC) are all wrong and they are out to get us or some massive Manure conspiracy(!)
At the end of the day, in this country (UK) its not on to call someone a 'negro'. That is the culture and society here, so to basically say we don't have any self-respect for having such a view over the word 'negro' is just ridiculous and disrespectful.
ReplyDeleteTo say that a racist would deny deny deny, whereas Suarez didn't deny he used, somehow puts credible doubt that Suarez's intention was racist is just a naive speculation and an inconclusive defence.
Evra has not played for a club in Spain. Secondly, just because Evra speaks Spanish, doesn't mean he understands the language in the manner as Suarez. There are many different variations of the Spanish language all over the world. So to casually say Evra 'knows how that word can be used in Spanish' shows a silly naive lack of understanding of the cultural differences between the many variations of the Spanish language.
Every black person I know would find being called negro derogatory, though knowing some of them, they would laugh it off but still acknowledge it as being racist.
What I would rather is that you get off your high horse and lecture a society as to how to behave. This is our culture, our society and I am perfectly happy that negro shouldn't be said in this day and age, as its an insult. Laughable that you think not making each other more aware and tolerant of other races will maybe able to eradicate racism fully.
In general, I think your entire post is basically from a person who supports Liverpool, hence the apologist nonsene you have come out with. The kind of shit that Glen Johnson's comes out with.
Sing it from the rooftops gobshite.
ReplyDeleteThe author is wrong (again) and always writes with a) the benefit of hindsight and b) with unusually grammatically structured 'headlines'.
ReplyDeleteHow can it be a lesson for LFC? Blase? What nonsense.
You mean, Evra knew what he was doing?
ReplyDeleteBlimey, who'd have thought.....
Likewise, Bill Wyman was seriously taking the piss with "Je suis un rockstar".
ReplyDeleteSince they are so wise, find out in countries like Malawi TODAY, what nationality are the dueling corporations doing work black people only for bread. Obviously that english have evolved on the issue, but at present the English are still racist, starting with a marked superiority complex
ReplyDeleteAnd I can ask if you've heard what countries today are in charge of neocolonialism. Such as multinational corporations dominating the oil in Africa to exploit the natives; or the Falklands is a good example too.
ReplyDeleteI think you guys are full of it, Suarez paid his dues for the mishap... imo i dont think he shud of been banned, yes he was ignorant but if ur born into a culture that calls "Blacks" negros and no one tries to stop u then in ur mind ur not to be doin anything wrong!! being a south african indian living amoungst "Whites","Blacks","Asians" and "Coloured" we have been exposed to dozens of racially abusive names fo each of our ethnic groups, but we know our history and know very well wen someone is being abusive!! if ur black im not goin to say "person of colour" wen i mean black, if i call u a darkie or watever no black person here wud get offended... its how we differentiate ourselves amoungst society...but i guess its da culture difference globally as well but dont lecture me on race issues, S.A had been through alot and to be racist now in this country is a joke!! i'd bet if i came to the uk and called my coloured frend a coloured in public i'd get a few raised eyebrows but its my culture and i have been brought up that way and in no way am i being racist!! da bushie is not a charou (me)so i call him bushie?? get wit the programme.... I doubt theres a black person on here that has beef wit suarez... All of u guys still having issues with suarez being racist are all WHITE!! "Caucasian" if u may... and i dont understand why? lol its like u guys were the "oppressed" jokes!
ReplyDeleteDon't be ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThis idea that Evra or Ferguson fitted anyone up is childish and needs to stop. It's not as if we are even enough of a threat to them for them to bother about us.
No, you are.
ReplyDeleteRubbish. There is a lot of use of the term in Uruguay itself and it isn't nice.
ReplyDeleteRacist paranoia, there's a lot of it in south america, and there's plenty of people like you trying to tell people they are paranoid. Your use of the term, 'left wing media' says it all, when most people know our media, with a few exceptions, is pretty right wing.
And, after that, you can add any tone or any word to it you feel like. If you don't think there is anything wrong with referring to people in that way, then what would you call a jewish man in a wheelchair if you met one? Do you refer to people's height or build when you meet them? Call people fatty much?
ReplyDeletereally useful post there, well done.
ReplyDeleteFunny, as it is his site, isn't he culturally allowed to do as he see fit? You seem to suggest it is ok for Suarez in a public place but now are whingeing like b*tch on someone else's website? Why are you worried about rudeness but think it is ok for people to call people by names regarding their personal appearance?
ReplyDeleteNot if the manager, the player and the staff do not seem to have moved on. I'm dealing with an issue at work, currently, where someone was caught drinking in another section and needs to be represented, otherwise they will lose their job. They just want to move on but seem a bit reluctant to stop blaming everyone else for their drinking problem and accept that they did wrong and try to fix it. Which includes not doing it again and understanding that it is wrong. Until they do that, they cannot move on and the issue will never be resolved.
ReplyDeleteToo right, you would not want to be a negrito in latin america or any of the latin european countries. And, as for Eastern Europe, don't go there. Literally. Culturally backward places.
ReplyDeleteIt's true, even one of the candidates for the london assembly for a uk extreme right wing party was from Uruguay, go figure. The fact is that negritos in countries in south america have even less rights than they do in the uk, by a long way. And, therefore, people treat, and address, them accordingly.
ReplyDeleteStill better than the latin countries or eastern europe, that is for sure. And i've been to all of those places, i can tell you that for sure.
ReplyDeleteI'm concerned about that, for sure, but would be more worried about what countries are not safe to walk the streets in simply for having a certain look. And, once again, parts of latin america and most of eastern europe are streets, pardon the pun, ahead, of the uk. Not good and not nice.
ReplyDeleteFunny how they only shouted 'manc' every time he touched the ball. The lack of proof or witnesses does not mean it did not happen or that they were innocent.
ReplyDeleteYes, i think the uk is sick. We say we are a fair society who believes that people are equal, but when i look at my Leeds Building Society Mortgage statement and look at the directors, i don't see much proof of that. Or most of the best jobs in the BBC, or the cabinet, or managers at top football clubs. Crazy, must be mere coincidence. And, yet, whenever someone does get caught out, they have always been taken out of context, or they were shouting 'manc' or people ask if society is sick when the issue gets brought up. You only have to look at the people with power in 99.9% of the institutions that matter, in our equitable society, to know that society is sick. The scary thing is that it is worse elsewhere and everyone, whatever their background, is doing it.
politically correct people. My God. It's political correctness gone mad, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteYeah, if he called himself aborigineaussieconvictkiller you might not be laughing, though.
ReplyDeleteWho's right? the people who come from the place that the comment is being made and who understand the local understanding of the relevant term.
actually, i think the situation was a bit more complex than that, though. As in the conversation when Evra asked Suarez 'why did you kick me?'.
ReplyDeleteYes, tokenJohnson did not do himself any favours, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteIf he really did call UncleTom Johnson 'negrito' in training, he ought to have been laid out. That would have made everything clear to everyone.
You telling me that Greeks do not get offended? Really?
ReplyDeleteNo you are wrong about there. I do have a beef with Suarez and his behaviour. Same as i wouldn't call a person with a wooden leg stumpy, or i don't go around calling people shorty or fatty. There's no need for it. it is up to each person what they are called, not up to ignorant third parties who do not know them. You've said it yourself, you define what you call yourself and your friend. Suarez was not Evra's friend.
ReplyDeleteI also have a mate from Johannesburg who comes over quite a lot. He's black and he would tell me that you knew when certain parts of society were being abusive because they would be kicking your head in. Obviously, that was more in the past with the old system when people would get picked up and taken in for doing nothing wrong.
Prize for the post of the day goes to you, my friend!!! Spot on, every word!
ReplyDeleteI do.
ReplyDeleteDid it go to number 1? I hated Johnny Depp for years for being involved with her!
ReplyDeleteParts of Yorkshire still believe this.
ReplyDeleteWho told you we loved the underdog? What in our society makes you think that?
ReplyDeleteIf i was paid 80k per week to go work in uruguay, i would check the rules of what should be said or not.
Nothing is racist in South America!
ReplyDeleteDon't be daft, he played in spain for a long time for other teams as well as madrid.
ReplyDeleteBoycott this site
ReplyDeleteGet a life manu scum
ReplyDeleteI'm with you.
ReplyDeleteYou must be mentally challenged. Dutch and English are way different. How the hell is he supposed to know what to say in English then?
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot of poor 'grammar' on this site. Agree.... ?
ReplyDeleteTypical boring headline structure on this site. Boring, boring boring boring boring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boringboring boring boring
Your wrong Gabweb he played for Real Madrid and went on loan to Hercules who he walked out on. He never played for anyone else nor for a long time. He made 63 appearances in Spain.

Suggest that you read 'a little bit more'. Slavery exsisted well well before the Europeansarrived on the scene. Your comments are racsist !
ReplyDeleteYour right, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. But if, as a Roman, you decide to converse in English with an Englishman don't get upset when during that conversation a word in English sounds like an offensive word in Roman. Or is your language the only correct language in the world?
ReplyDeleteWe might have been in October, though.
ReplyDeleteIt's more childish to bury your head in the sand and pretend that Ferguson never 'benefits' from any underhand tactics.
Anyway. Hope you had a good birthday, even if the day was shite....
I think i'd probably call him unlucky. I'd certainly call him disabled.
ReplyDeleteGlen Johnson tried to move on, to draw a line under it, and you referred to him as an 'Uncle Tom'.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you could start calling the member of staff Jim Carver 'til he sorts himself out?
That is the main problem as I see it too.
ReplyDeleteAs a generalisation, mono-linguistic societies are at extreme odds to understand anything about how different a language can be to another and how the weight of the culture behind expressions in that language can be so conflicting with what a mono-linguisitic person knows.
I believe it hightens the incapacity to break cultural barriers mentally as they have no in-the-flesh analogies to relate to at a language level.

Ridiculous argument about measuring what you say during a conversation in your mother-tongue with another because you're on foreign soil... a most frustrating demonstration of this form of ignorance.
