"Sack him!" - LFC legend calls for 'stupid' midfielder to lose his job. Harsh...?

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has lambasted QPR's Joey Barton for his lack of remorse after being handed a 12 game ban for violent conduct, and he's called on Mark Hughes and QPR owner Tony Fernandes to dump the controversial midfielder on the scrapheap.

Barton received a 12 match ban for 'violent conduct' in the final premier league game of the season against Manchester City, and Nicol - who won every trophy under the sun during his time at Liverpool - had little sympathy for the midfielder, and when asked if Barton should be sacked by QPR, he responded:

"It's going to be tough to get rid of someone with his [Barton's] reputation, but need to trust your players, and you can't trust this guy to stay on the field for 90 minutes, so why would you keep him?

"He is lucky he's getting a 12 game suspension, and not 12 months locked up. The smart thing to do was to show remorse, but the fact he did what he did shows he's stupid".

I recently called for Luis Suarez to be sacked or sold by Liverpool for publicly admitting that he would cheat in a Liverpool shirt, and I totally agree with Nicol's view on Barton. If anyone else engaged in *proved* 'violent conduct' in their workplace, termination would almost definitely follow, so why should footballers be treated any differently?

  4. Steve Nichol was a great player but My most abading memory of Him was when I was passing Melwood on the top deck of a huyton to Liverpool bus. Steve decided to relieve Himself in front of everyone, as the advert says "nice one steve"

  5. Barton is mad but for a club like qpr as good a mid as they are ever going to get, Suarezes case does not come into the same category there is a difference,

  7. Barton is scum, no other word comes close to describing this cancer to the beautiful game.
He should NEVER be allowed to play again - either that or just go end his 'career' at the thugs graveyard that is millwall!!

  8. suarez is different- actions speak louder than words. talk is just talk. only consider sacking him once he's actually done it. but on the flipside, handballing in the goalmouth is an instinctive reaction for 9/10 players isn't it?

I saw your comments about Suarez last time and resisted the urge to comment myself but it is unreasonable to suggest Suarez deserves sacking for saying he would commit a professional foul to benefit the team in the dying moments of an important game. The punishment for doing so is being sent off and subsequently taking a three match ban which is wholly justified and fair. In the case of handball on the line the attacking team receives a penalty which gives them a fair chance to take the chance they had just been denied again.

To reinforce the point of finding your idea of sacking players for committing professional fouls unfair I can find at least one great example of a precedent being set in the 1978 League Cup final against Nottingham Forest. Can anyone deny Phil Thompson's status as a European Cup winning captain and club legend? Because surely if you would condemn Suarez for his actions and comments you cannot have double standards and would have at the time been calling for Thommo's head too. You will struggle to find a single Liverpool fan who has a bad word to say about his actions that day (It was outside the box and should never have been a penalty) Seriously mate just drop it, our opinions may vary but I'm pretty sure I have the backing of 99% of the fans which kinda goes to show your reasoning is somewhat flawed.

  11. bartons was physical! massive difference, and everyone saw exactly what happend.  whereas suarez's incident is all he said, she said!  remember barton already ruined 1 career for a lad with a cigar, and then that christmas punchup a few years back. i personally do not want the man projected into millions of homes. get rid, then he can spend more time visiting his ice pick murdering cousin!

  12. Suarez just talked, talking and committing the act are two different things. Sure he should've been fined, but are you kidding me you want him sold for making a comment like that? Get a grip.

i'd definitely stick my hand out in the goal line for my teammates and country if i needed to. my goalkeeper would then make a fantastic save and  the rest of the team would buy us a bunch of pints to celebrate our hard fought victory. given that, i would be more than glad to receive my three game suspension. its NOT cheating. you just HATE luis suarez, plain and simple as that. this is getting old, just drop it man

  15. I think you make a good point. In Britain, there are types of cheating that are okay and ones that aren't. If Carragher came out and said 'If it was the difference between winning and losing, I'd commit a professional foul' nobody would bat an eyelid. People probably take it as a given that he would. I'm not saying that is right, but people would be nowhere near as critical of that as Suarez's handball.

Also as pointed out, people always talk about this like Suarez is the only one who would do it forgetting that in that quarter-final there was another person on the line (I seem to remember long hair- Caceres possibly?) throwing his arms at it. This isn't even mentioning all the other incidents over the years people don't really care about (Neville in the derby, which I remember him being praised for at the time or Henchoz's exploits).

  16. Despite being told by all that the comparison with Barton is ludicrous, I doubt Kanwar will give up his vendetta against Suarez. What lies behind it I don't know, but it is destroying his credibility.

  17.  Had to bring Suarez in to it didn't you .. Imagine all Liverpool fans were like Jamie K No player would ever want to come play for us..

  18. the bloke is an idiot. will never change.can remember seeing him at anfield against city, and he needlessly crunched alonso and rightly saw red. barton is solely out for himself, hes had more chances than most

  22. let me put a few things straight, when Arteta looked badly injured it was Suarez who was more concerned than anyone else including his own team mates also Luis was one of the first to give support to Muamba.

  27. Whats the point of this article?

  28. no point to the article Nicol is selling his own story to get paid, love the man but shut up. Barton is the current PL bad boy if he wasn't playing footie he would be in Walton with the rest of his family, thought it was a right laugh and totally believe Hughes gave him the nod to do what he did on the final day. We are talking big big £'s or big big accolade's put yourself in Suarez's or Barton's poss, if it meant World Cup progression or stayin in the Premier League at the expense of my personal standing with the public (if I had one in Bartons case) I would be  happy to put it on the line just like anyone else just only a select few can admit it. Big shoulders our little Suarez has got so big respect to him, Barton.... just a hell of a right dig an right foot. Fernandez is not bothered, his team stayed up an Barton gets a holiday all smile's. Do your really think Suarez was getting a kicking in the dressing room after Gyan blew his chance??? hmmmm no. YNWA

  29. I don't see how people can say what Suarez did and what Barton did is the same !

Verbal abuse must be stopped because it leads to violence and Barton is violent already.
Also, I don't think Suarez meant to abuse Evra but it's beside the point.

What Barton did is worse, it was pure hatred and regardless the reasons it can not be tolerated.

If I was managing any PL team I would not let him play, not only for being but because being stupid .

  30. You cant just sack the little shit, you have to pay him off, and that could amount to a few million unless they can get round it somehow through the PFA.
However like in all bad boys some club will take him on next, like the goalie who killed 2 little lads drink driving he has just come out of jail and Swindon have given him a trial. Lee Hughes is another he is again in the news today fined £ 500 for assaulting a girl.
Footballers seem above the law at times.

  31. Barton is english and that's why not a huge penitance...So why Suarez paid so large intant of banned for game...why he is not English. Now all of us should not support England in any tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 'angle'?
    i presume you mean angel.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Get Real Jamie. Footballers inevitably resort to various forms of 'cheating' to gain the upper hand. I see nothing wrong in Suarez being honest about his aims.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Knowing his history, QPR maybe should have inserted a clause in his contract concerning violent behaviour, which would possibly have allowed them to sack Barton with no or small compensation. Apparently it will cost them £11m to sack Barton. He is just not worth all the shit he brings, nowhere near (whereas Suarez is more talented, hence gets that bit more leeway eh ;) )
