Ignore him! Let's pray FSG disagrees with Keegan's strange view on LFC transfers...

I'm sure most fans would agree that Liverpool need to sign a prolific striker (or two) this summer. The need for a striker is so self-evident that it's almost become a cliche, and hopefully the club is hard at work right now identifying realistic targets. It seems incredulous that anyone could seriously believe Liverpool are fine in the striker department, but according to Reds legend Kevin Keegan, Liverpool should be focusing on other areas of the squad.

Speaking to ESPN after the Norwich game recently, Keegan praised Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, and argued that Liverpool need players of that calibre to take the club forward. Keegan was then asked: 'What areas of the team do Liverpool need players of that calibre'. The former striker - renowned for his attacking approach during his time as a manager - observed:

"I think they need another midfield player for sure, and possibly - just as cover - another defender.

With the greatest respect to Keegan, how can he not see that Liverpool desperately need a striker who regularly scores goals? As a goalscorer himself, it's a little strange that he doesn't think that area of the team needs to improve.

I think it's clear that Liverpool are going to need more than just a defender and midfielder to start bridging the 16 point gap between 8th and 4th, not to mention the 34 point gap between 8th and 1st (!) Goals win games, and this season, Liverpool have:

* Failed to win 65% of league games.
* Lost the same number of games as they've won.
* Scored only 43 goals in 36 league games.
* The lowest conversion rate in the entire league.

It fills me with dread to think that Liverpool could start next season with the same strike-force as this season. Goalscoring midfielders are also vitally important, and after the goalscoring failure of Downing, Henderson and Kuyt this season, that issue also needs to be addressed, but buying a new striker has to be the priority.

Hopefully FSG have a different view to Keegan when it comes to Liverpool's transfer needs. You never know though - the club didn't buy a striker in January, even though it was obviously a necessity; perhaps the same thing will happen again during the summer...?

  1. This is the same Keegan who said promising things about Dalglish's purchases and binned Pardew's transfer activity as keeping Newcastle a mid table team.  I don't think he knows how to eat his own words.

  2. I can understand Keegan's side and i can also your side of the story we haven't scored enough goals so people jump straight to strikers but the fact is the supply form both flanks has been nothing short of pathetic and with out the ammunition the guns cant fire and we need a good attacking midfielder the fulham games was evidence to this Carroll won so many heads and there was no one near him for the nod down our midfield has become to defence minded we need to sign more players from midfield who are more attacking minded and some of the players that are going round liverpool fans need to think right straight and reevaluate our realistic targets we are never going to sign Higuain, Hazard and all those other big players we have been linked with i would love us to sign them sure but i don't think it will happen players that i believe are realistic targets i would ike to see us sign are Hoilett, Sigurdsson and Luke de jong there all cheap and young and look great players but i would also love to see us use our scouting system to pick up a  real gem just look at newcastle it can be done when money is spent wisely and you have a good scouting system we have been very unlucky this season drastic change is not needed but i think our weakest point in the team is midfield JAY SPEARING IS DOGSH*T

  3.  we need 2 forwards, a winger, a creative mf, a real DM, a defender.

  5. Keegan is right. With world class creative mid fielders in our side, will  create a lot of chances for our strikers. Right now we don't have that and the strikers are struggling. When Agger is injured, the defense becomes weaker; either because Mr. Dependable - Jamie Carragher - is getting older and Coates is still learning about English football. The consequences of a lack of depth in both areas has been very significant and harmful to Liverpool's cause. World-class mid fielders will be able to open up stubborn defences that park their buses in-front of their goal.

  7. It's a sign of Carrol's ineptitude as astriker that he believes he should knocked down every high ball to him even if he doesnt have any team mates around him.
He needs to look at fellow big strikers like drogba and crouch who even on receiving high balls look to retain possesion by usually chesting down and playing with their feet.
Carrol needs a footballing brain because he does not seem to know his weaknesses which is why he continues to make the same mistakes.
This could also be down to management who could be telling him to keep doing what he is doing no matter how ineffective.
I believe ball control is an absolute necessity to develop his game.

  8. Jaimie,to help further quantify the issue of goal scoring requirement in term of new player :
To achieve 4th place, we need to score around 70 goals a season assuming that we maintain more or less the same defensive cover we had this season.
As of date, we scored 43 EPL goals ( 27 goals short of that target). Last season we scored 59 goals including 28 goals from players who were either benched ,sold or not part of Daglish plans ( Maxi/Kuyt/Meireles).

Simple math suggest that we need couple of NEW players who can score double digit ELP goals EACH. This is not to account to injuries or dip in form .

I made this prediction in Dec 2011 as to why we will not finish top four this season.
    What do you think ?

  9. It's quite obvious that we need more goalscorers in the side but unfortunately they don't come cheap. In my opinion a centre forward, right winger and central midfielder are needed. Soldado, Adam Johnson and maybe Elm from Alkmaar, but to get these three I think it will cost £50m minimum. Will FSG give the manager that much to spend again? Doubtful. I also think the likes of Downing, Adam, Henderson and Carroll will be better next season but let's face it, they couldn't really play any worse.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Still we only have 2 out-and-out strikers (Bellamy's knees mean he can't be relied on week-in-week-out, plus he's the best left-winger we've got and Kuyt seems more productive wide-right). Most other teams have at least 4 to choose from.

It is true that Jay Spearing is a sack of sh*te. Last summer it was clear we needed a second holding midfielder in case the worst happened to Lucas, but Kenny didn't act. It was also clear we didn't have enough strikers, yet here we are.

Kenny wasted the clubs money and time replacing Mireless, Cole and Aquillani with likes of Adam, Henderson and Downing. Fair enough we were in need of a left-winger, but after missing out on Young, somehow deciding to pay more for Downing was laughable at the time, but has however proved to be utter insanity! lol

go to wembley , win the FA CUP , sing a few songs drink a beer or two
and let KD worry about the failings of this year .
he knows whats wrong and will no doubt about it , FIX

IF , someone had said last year ,after winning NOTHING since 2006
hey boys  this year we will get to two finals , win two cups
but will come 7th or 8th we all sure would of said GREAT .
    take that now !

  12. The new players brought in, hmmmmm are they good enough...???
Judging on this season alone my reply would be shit NO!!!
But their is an argument in that as they had all being playing well for previous clubs...????
As far as Keegan's comment's, well they also cause an argument, Hopefully Lucas will be fully fit at the start of next season as we need that type player in good form thus giving confidence to the rest of the team going forward!!!
Jay Spearing aint bad and will develop, just not sure how good he can become 2 me he is average...
Shelvey has potential 2 grow into a good player, but it was a mistake taking him back when on loan at Blackpool, up 2 now i've kept faith with Daglish but 2 be honest, i'm loosing patience, swap Carroll 4 papa cisse since d cunt prefeers Newcastle and he aint good enough!!!!

  16. even if we win the fa cup I wont consider this season as a success, yes it will ease the pain a bit but no way its a success finishing out of europe places and behind everton as well, but what if we dont win the cup?! are you thinking about that too? im not one of them who wants a striker or 2 or some defenders etc. forget about that, we need to sell almost the whole squad!!! really ? yes. I would keep only suarez gerrard and maybe skrtel or agger, the others can freely go, and this isnt possible i know so dont expect anything better from lfc next season, it will be more of the same again with little changes , for good or bad.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i think we need a new keeper because pepe has been poor and that red card proves he can be prone to rash decision making.
we could do a complete overhaul and get rid of the deadwood like carra, hendo, suarez, maxi and build the team around the big man, AC.
if he was given real service by proper players then he will score 30-45 goals a season, he is the strongest striker i have ever seen. apparently he dominated john terry in england training for fun.

  20. If there is 1 player I would like to see in a Red shirt? It is Aarjen Robben. This man is class. He can cross, dribble, score, versatile on both flanks. and he has speed. world class footballer. AC will score with him on the flanks. Suarez will be on fire with AR on the flanks as well. Keegan is almost right.

We still need defensive backup and another young upcoming goalkeeper to keep Pepe on his toes. He has been slacking of late.

  21. I totally agree. Even if we win the FA cup , its just delaying the inevitable and prolonging the fans agony and ruining the club .

A new coach will come in ( next year ) and wash his hands of Dalglish expensive flops and will ask for 80M -100 transfer budget  to repair the damage .

  22. Liverpool need a prolific goalscorer, a quality right winger, a creative midfielder and a defensive midfielder. Don't think Liverpool need a defender though Coates and Wilson can cover the center back position, Robinson can cover leftback and in right back we already have Kelly and Flanagan as cover.
I won't mind Liverpool selling Reina either, he has been really poor this season and he looks like someone who wants out.

your a rose tinter of the highest order - is that the best you can come up with ? be positive trust in kenny or go and support Everton ? Its no wonder the clubs in big trouble as far as league progression is concerned , its patently obvious to all but the die hard kenny apologists that the wheels have came off and our manager just does not seem capable of getting this team back on track ( unless its a one off cup game  - they get themselves up for ) Looking at the team the other night I was reminded of Chelski  during AVB's last few games in charge  - and thats really worrying.

too many of our fans are talking about the FA cup like its already in the cabinet  - we needed momentum ahead of the final  - instead we got the most expensive 2nd string team in the league playing like they really could not be arsed  - Carroll and raheem the exceptions , apart from the cup success this season has lurched from one disaster to another on and off the field  - what I fear most is the reaction of the majority of our fanbase if FSG do pull the rug from under Kenny  - we dont need any more controversy so I pray they dont sack him .

"The thing with Liverpool, though, is that when you watch them at Anfield and see the games they have drawn and even some of the ones they have lost, then they have always created loads of chances.
It is not going to take major surgery to get them much more like a top six team and I think their American owner John W Henry understands that.
So, while Dalglish is under pressure just like any other Premier League manager, I don't think he is under as much pressure as people from the outside might think" - Mark Lawrenson

  37. I,ve never seen as much s**t written by so called LFC fans in my life. We started the season with a shout at 3 trophies and could end up with 2 of those. Players careers are deemed a success by what medals they retire with. Any good young player worth his salt would see us as good an oppurtunity to earn honours as any other EPL side. If a player just wants to immediately play 6 to 12 champions league games then we,re obviously not the team for him this season. As for our recent signings lets get real i agree that Adams was a bad signing, Downing has been a let down. However personally i think Carroll, Henderson and Coates have looked better with every game they have played and are still very young and enrique has had a good 1st season while Bellamy has been excellent. King Kenny cannot be expected to rebuild the mess the club was in 18 months ago and get everything 100% right straight away. I find it pathetic that any so called fan would deem a 4th place finish a success above 2 trophies in a rebuilding process. Get real and start acting like true fans should.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Inclined to agree with what you say John. Liverpool have created the most chances in the league and have hit the woodwork the most by far. I saw a stat saying we have hit it 11 times more than any other team this season. Agree with Jaimie that bringing in a goalscorer is imperative if we are to challenge at the top again.

We havn't won the leage for an age so wh should we suddenly be ready to win it this year. I expect ups and downs to a title in3 years time. Pitty some people are too arrogant to accept where we are, and too negative to believe where we might get to. JK, you even quote Jason Macateer as a sage of wisdom..why him over Kenny?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Did it ever occur to you that when you sack a coach the one right behind him may have a different idea of what direction the club should go and if that doesn't work then what? Sometimes it takes time, London wasn't built in a day. Do you have any idea of how Sir Purple nose(A. Ferguson) started? Give it time, it's you guys who are going to be on the bandwagon rejoicing when it all unfolds.

    ReplyDelete
  42. As much as we're in dire need of strikers, I agree our top priority is a midfielder to slot in beside Lucas.
Because if we continue to burden Lucas with such a high workload, mark my words, he'll be constantly breaking down.
Its critical we bring in a DM to share the workload, and move on those midfielders who cant.

In an ideal world our best option would be Javi Martinez.
He's classed as a DM but don't be fooled, he's got tremendous ability in getting forward and joining the attack.
A perfect partner for Lucas in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Martinez was constantly being linked with Liverpool during Benitez's reign.
However because we couldn't meet the then asking price (around 24m) we ended up with Aquilani.
Today, he would cost around 30m pound, and I cant see us having those funds this summer.
If we did, I'd be making a bee-line for his signature.

With Gerrard in his twilight years, we should have planed to build our future team around Lucas & Martinez.
Personally, I would have spent the Torres money on this guy, hes that good.

Another option would have been Lucas Biglia.
When Macherano left, he advised Liverpool to get Biglia as his replacement.
    What did we do... nothing.
Biglia plays for Anderlecht and would have cost peanuts when Macherano recommended him.
Fast forward to today, and many of Europe's top clubs are chasing him with Real Madrid heading the queue...

Honestly, we are so hopeless in the transfer market it defies belief.

It also shows how poorly we spent our money last season, because most of the positions we filled last summer, STILL need fixing this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hell No! One hoofer in Jamie Carragher is more than one can stomach in a lifetime. The last thing we want is a team of hoofers aptly coached by the technically-inept Carragher,

    ReplyDelete
  44. I also wonder how Carra's negative view of foreignors will impact on his coaching given he was very vocal in the purging of non brits especially the departures of Rafa and Torres while praising the arrival of the legendary Joe Cole and Hodgson

    ReplyDelete
  45. London wasn't built in a day, but Newcastle was rebuilt in 2 transfer windows.

Why couldn't Liverpool do the same after spending more money?  Why couldn't Dalglish see it wouldn't work out when no Liverpool fan were excited of the amounts we paid for Carrol, Downing and Henderson?

    ReplyDelete
  46. A striker definitely, to keep Carroll hungry and to add more dimension to strikeforce. Carroll is typical British boot-em-up style of play. Suarez is run with the ball. We need one like Torres, out and out striker!

Considering the article, a defensive midfielder is pretty much needed too. Spearing is making up with his grit, but that may not be enough. Another masch will be welcomed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That woodwork stat does not look impressive when you notice that the very team who have hit the wodwork 11 tomes less than liverpool have actually scored 45 goals more. Yes you read that right, The difference between City at 88 goals and liverpool at 43 goals is 45 goals which 2 more goals than we have scored. If you work our own goals from that 43 then you realise how truly horrendeous this is given we have to go back to 1905 to have a season that bears closer comparison despite the fact we had a poor season in 1954 when we relegated.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Bob Paisley once said if you're second you're nothing and people want us to be fighting 4th are they for real? We want to be the best and that will take time but its like we have so many glory seekers who need to find another club surely not Liverpool.

  52. JK has admittedly drawn opinions about his articles, which is the essence of debate, I for one believe that KD is solely responsible for the worst season in a longtime.  We have to criticize ourselves in order to move on, lets remember KD is a great servant but he is not the club, his take on a successful season is obviously skewed and he has been taking the mickey out of supporters, and to hear Gerro saying winning the FA would mark a good season?  C'mon we are the laughing stock of the EPL with our spending.
KD has been told to follow up on Commolli's targets, they are not his at all, becoz he is getting fired soon, its called continuity, but remember 'No individual is greater than the club' -B.Shankley even 'purple nose' used this quote to put Rooney-Shrek in his place , why can't we use or apply it now?  Is Kenny greater than Shankley, Bill Lidell, Paisley? Disgraceful attitude some of you Negs have. I'm disgusted that you can't enjoy an FA Cup final. Arrogance is unbelievable.

  60. wingers (as in the Downing style-go wide and then cross) are an outdated concept. I sincerely hope we don't employ this style anymore. I want to see some 4-3-3's with some possession football and patience. Our midfield is so shit right now its depressing. I literally get depressed when Adam gets the ball because I know it will soon be a goal kick for the other team. Same with Downing, "oh yay, another corner....good thing big Andy is out there to put it away!"

    ReplyDelete
  61. Again, its not about firing a manager based on results. Its about stopping the free fall that we are in (and it IS free fall).   This is a global brand that has to look after itself, and its not just results that are important but we have to pay attention to the style of play that is being employed. The most boring football I have seen in ten years at Liverpool. And that is including a year that included Roy Hodgeson. Let me also just say this. I have never been less excited about signings than I was about KD's.

  64. I disagree. I think that the kind of chances we are creating are half-chances. Yes a good striker only needs a half chance, but if you are going to be trying to get fourth in THIS league, you have to do better than half chances. You need to be beating fulham 4-1. You are playing football right if that is your kind of scoreline. You won't get into fourth spot by winning the occasional game 1-0. And the only way you score plenty of goals is by having a talented and hungry midfield to continue to supply good chances. Not a hundred blind crosses from deep to the solitary big man up front. There is so much about our APPROACH to the game that is wrong. If mediocrity is what you want then stick to Dalglish. We won't win the league with him in charge, and I highly doubt we would even finish in the top four. Maybe if he was given ten years....are you okay with that?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Just want to see us play good football. Trophies are great don't get me wrong. But I don't watch football to watch a team hold up a trophy with confetti in the air. I watch to see attractive football, creativity, determination, hunger. Seen very little of that this season.....THAT'S all I am unhappy about.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love Bob Paisley because he set his standards high. For me I see big worrying signs when any manager at a club like Liverpool, starts trying to lower expectations. That is what Woy did also. My favourite Paisley quote is "you must believe you are the best, then make sure you are"....CLASS

    ReplyDelete
  67. NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about less crossing of the ball altogether, and more intelligent midfield build up?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Apart from Liverpool all the top 8 clubs have 4 strikers to call on, granted some may not be great ie Anichebe but they are there to be called on.
Even Stoke have 4 or 5. Liverpool should have at least 2 further top quality strikers on the books to back up Carroll and Suarez as Bellamy is a wide man predominately. We passed up on Cisse and Jelavic in January and their clubs are reaping the benefit.
Dempsey would be my first choice signing as he has an eye for goal and can play in various attacking positions. There is a host of top foreign players most of us haven't heard of being linked by newspapers and websites so lets hope that at least one is signed.

  80. Do you honestly think Newcastle will be able to sustain this? Everton also finished fourth once. They did not last did they. Newcastle might do it, but they will find it harder than Tottenham and Everton who have been near 4th regularly.

  81. What is Liverpool doing right now to make you believe improvement will come under Dalglish?  Think about it without emotional attachments to the man's legacy (which I also have).
