'I admire him' - Luis Suarez hails LFC manager candidate. Next stop Anfield?

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is currently second favourite for the Liverpool job, and the club's fans are already on the his back, hounding him before he's even met with FSG. One of the chief complaints against the Spaniard is his lack of experience dealing with top players, but Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has great respect for Martinez, which bodes well if he ends up getting the job.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca on Friday, Suarez was asked which other teams/managers impress him in the Premier League, and in reply, he was full of praise for Martinez. He said:

"I've admired the work done by Roberto Martinez this season"

Suarez also praised Swansea City, noting that 'from the goalkeeper to the striker, they always want to play football'.

I personally wouldn't have a problem if Liverpool appointed Martinez, though according to my sources (as revealed five days ago on the site's Facebook page), FSG are determined to land Andre Villas Boas, and the only way the Portuguese won't get the job is if he turns it down.

Alas, Liverpool 'fans' will never accept Martinez, and they will hound him out of Anfield just like they did with Roy Hodgson. Mark my words, if he gets the job, history will repeat itself:

* Hodgson was resented from day one after beating Kenny Dalglish to the job.

* As a result of that perceived slight against a club legend, fans were desperate to see Hodgson fail, and never gave him any kind of chance.

* The same will happen if Martinez is appointed; the Pro-Benitez Cult will resent him for beating LFC's revered former manager to the job.

* Fans who idolise Benitez will be desperate to see Martinez fail, and will be on his back from day one, hoping that when he fails, they can pressure FSG to bring back Benitez (just like Dalglish was brought after Hodgson was sacked).

Who cares if Martinez is best known for relegation scraps? Looking at his abilities in that context is spectacularly narrow-minded, and it's just an easy excuse to dismiss him.

I see Martinez as a top manager in training; honing his skills at a smaller club; learning his trade, and preparing himself for a big club.

If Martinez gets the job, the thumbs-up from Suarez will be a definite bonus, though I honestly don't believe he would have a problem getting the Liverpool squad onside.

  1. Wigan were only 9 points away from us.... they spent less than 10M, we spent 110m.

  3. Are you actually a Liverpool fan or just the most critical person to walk the earth? I grow tired of reading your anti Liverpool comments. I think you should come out as the Manc you really are.

Liverpool hounded Hodgson because we were 3rd from bottom and Liverpool supporters knew he WAS sh*te.

  5. Not enough experience and the players that hounded Rafa out will also do it to him.
We need a strong manager with experience otherwise we will become Newcastle, Leeds and Forest all over again.

  6. No, fans personally denigrated Hodgson from day one just because of who he was. In any event, Hodgson's record at LFC is BETTER that Dalglish's, which just shows the ridiculous hypocrisy of the fanbase.

  7. i would never want or revere in a manager of lfc failing. i support the team. my preference is benitez. if it martinez or villas boas i will support the team and the manager regardless. for me benitez is the most suitable manager and best option available. He knows he club, he fans. he has the highest win percentage of our managers. he restructured our youth academy. he can attract better quality players to the club. he is tactically astute. understands the premier league and the european cups, especially champions league. he can adapt to british teams and european teams. has beaten barcelona at nou camp, inter milan. he is the first option for me.

  8. Jaimie, Hodgson wasn't resented from day one as you would know if you went to the match. He got a decent amount of support considering the poor results from day one, however. In the pubs around Anfield the common feeling was that is was a shame that KD hadn't got the job, but it may have been for the best and that Hodgson was a manager a bit in the Paisley mould who would do well for us. It was only when our fears about his style of play came true and when he started with his inappropriate comments that the tide started to turn.

  10. Good article, i think Martinez would be a bold move tbh one that could pay off in the long term, my only concern would be the resistance to such a move by the fanbase and perhaps players....

Whoever we bring in we will have this problem IMO, only rafa would be accepted and given a proper chance UNLESS we off load a few players who might derail any new appointment...

Suarez saying that he admires Martinez does not convince me of anything tbh, i tend to take what he says with a pinch of salt, didn't he say he would leave if Kenny was sacked..?

  11. there is no comparison. Benitez isn't even in contention for the job so pro Benitez "fans" have no reason to comlain if Martinez does get the job.

  12. I'm sick of this - Hodgson wasn't disliked because he wasn't Dalglish - he wasn't liked because he had us playing horrible football, had us in bottom half of the table from day one, tried to lower our expectations down to his level, and blamed everybody from the fans, to agger and johnson, to Dalglish himself. Truth is, he wasn't up to the job. And it'll be the same in the England job - he cannot handle any kind of expectation to win. That is why he tries to lower them. That was never going to happen at Liverpool where expectations are always, and rightly, very high, and with the media circus around the English job - he'll struggle to contain expectations around the national team too.

  14. Personally id rather martinez get it than avb because martinez motivates the players very well and this isn't another woy because this man plays proper football and with fans backing him we could go far. Avb could work but I don't think players respect him. But he could attract quality, like falcao and hulk.

  15. Get off your 'super-fan' high horse. 'if you went to the match'? I love how tedious superfans such as yourself try and make out you have some kind of superior knowledge/insight that everyone else. I went to home and away games during the Hodgson reign, and part of the reason I'm so harsh towards Hodgson-hating fans is because of the pathetic personal abuse I saw first had from superfans on the terraces.

  16. Jaimie I agree with you 100% mate. Martinez would be an excellent manager unfortunately as you say he will be hounded out by the pro Rafa mob. Great shame as I am sure he will go on somewhere else and be a top manager.
As for AVB the bloke is a disaster and his next 'project' as he puts it should be in the Portuguese second division. He had a great season at Porto was given a shot in the big time as with due respects the Portuguese league does not have the same fan and media pressure as the EPL and failed miserably the new and as EQUALLY inexperienced manager Roberto DiMatteo came in and won the CL and FA Cup to boot. Dont forget the Chelsea manager was sacked by WBA, I didnt hear of rebellions and upset from Chelsea fans when he was appointed. Its just a shame for him Chelsea havent got the balls to make it permanent now.

    ReplyDelete
  17. You rightly point to Martinez lack of experience. In the EPL we play 38 games, the top teams have vastly experienced managers like Ferguson, Wenger, Mancini and possibly Capello at Chelsea. Do you really think some rookie can come into the pressure cooker of Liverpool FC and achieve top four status in one season? That is the target FSG expect, Ian Ayre has stated Kenny was sacked because he failed to achieve that, how on earth is Martinez going to achieve that aim? Maybe if he is given a five year plan and told no matter what happens we will support you in the project, but that won't happen so it's pointless appointing him. If FSG want a top four finish in one season it will take an experienced manager who knows the EPL and knows the club, it has to be Rafa, he is the only manager that ticks all the requirements and stands a chance.

  18. Im a big Liverpool fan and i'd have no problem with Martinez. Let's face it, Carragher wants to be a LFC manager in the future and i don't have a crystal ball to see if that would ever happen but if he does someday, he won't have experience either and I can't see him being frozen out by so-called loyal fans.

  19. Dalglish presided over the worst league form since 1954; he broke lots of negative records along the way, and regressed the club in the league. What's your point?

These are the same idiots who hounded one BRIAN CLOUGH out of Leeds - and we all know what happened next - half of them have never kicked a ball - IDIOTS

  21. I don't why this guy has come into the reckoning. There are plenty of managers who manage to keep crap teams up why not go for them. Martinez has done nothing but keep Wigan up by the skin of his teeth every season I just do not understand why that is enough to become a Liverpool manager. If he managed to get Wigan into the top 6 or win a carling cup or FA cup then I would be impressed. I for one thought the obvious choice would have been Jurgen Klopp but he doesnt want it then AVB makes the more sense and I hope you are right and we get him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The most qualified man for the job by a MILE is Benitez, however he is not being considered as he would not want to work within the system FSG are planning on implementing. That's ok, although it seems to me that you should hire the best man for the job and then worry about the structures.

I don't have a problem with Martinez in that I believe he is a talented coach and could easily grow into a much better one at LFC. What I do have a problem with, is the process behind why he is being considered in the first place - if Wigan had been relegated, would he even be in the frame? I can't see it. So basically he is getting interviewed off the back of his last 9 games in charge. Is this not a short-term view? And before you point out that Wigan play nice football etc, we know that FSG don't really care about performances, only results - otherwise Dalglish would have been given another season.

Basically I think it might be a case of the right man for the wrong reasons, which is fine in itself but it does make me question the owners a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You are so right. This nonsense about hounding Hodgson out is definitely from people who don't go to the match. Bad results, shocking football, awful signings and telling fans to lower their expectations cost Hodgson his job

    ReplyDelete
  24. Regarding your reading between the lines of the LS comments. I too admire the work RM has done. I just don't want him manager of LFC. What's to say LS doesn't feel the same. There's absolutely no backing of him as a new manager in what LS has stated.
RM is nowhere near experienced enough for the job. We are taking a punt on AVB in my opinion but I think it's a punt worth taking. Only RB would pretty much guarantee us being back in the top 4 in 1 or 2 years.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, but what did you think of the football we were playing?

    ReplyDelete
  26. AVB or Martinez only make sense if they are given time and financial backing, neither manager will achieve anything if after one season they are sacked for failing to achieve top 4. If Kenny couldn't do it in one season AVB or Martinez have no chance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Most fans think they have more superior knowledge than the next one. The pubs around Anfield are full  of self appointed experts and pundits who all know better than you and also have inside info about every subject under the sun.

  32. Big difference between Martinez and Hodgson Martinez young and will get better and Hodgson old and couldn't.
I know Wigans final weeks heroics got them out of relegation and good on them, but one must ask if Martinez is that good how did they get into a relegation scrap considering their late form?

  34. Adam - an immediate return to the top four is not the requirement; Ian Ayre - FSG's mouthpiece - stated last week that the club just wants to see progress on a week by week, month by month basis.  That wasn't happening under Dalglish.  if Martinez gets the job, and Liverpool finish 5th next season, just a couple of points behind 4th place, that will constitute the kind of progress FSG require.  It wouldn't be ideal, but I doubt Martinez would get sacked for that kind of result, especially considering the fact Dalglish regressed LFC in the league this season to the extent the club finished 16/17 points behind 4th place.

    ReplyDelete
  35. They probably will go for Martinez as they know as a young upcoming manager they wont have to splash the cash as they would if Rafa or Capello or AVB came because they will only come if given a miniumum spend and I dont think the spends will be all that high.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Martinez likes a 3-4-3 I can see this working for us, at any rate he has fresh ideas, a positive philosophy about the game coupled with good man management skills. I'm a big fan of Rafa but going back is not the way forward IMO as I don't see him working under the system FSG want to set up. I think most LFC fans should have got over the fact we are not a top four team any-more and need time before we are again. Young team young manager, let them grow together.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think the fans objected to his caveman style of football. His quotes to Agger of "just kick the fucking thing" show how much he knew about the Liverpool way of play.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Whilst Hodgson wasn't 'Shite' watching games when he was managing was. The football was more boring and stale than anything under Houlier or Benitez.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dalglish's win percentage this season was 36%.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Why? It is a statement of fact.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's funny how everyone else in Football world has the utmost respect for Hodgson, yet according to deluded LFC fans, he is crap....I think you may regret saying this. After England play boring crap football at 2012 Euro's... and Hodgson gives one uninspiring excuse laced interview after another...and England get dumped without reaching the second stage the whole of England will know Hodgson is crap.

  44. Am not sure how u can say us Rafa fans would want Maritnez to fail? if  he stirs the club in the right direction and takes not only to level rafa took us but beyond well and good, but i think u r so caught up in not liking Rafa that you cant stand the fact that so many of us want rafa back as shown from a poll taken on ur own website. If u dont like rafa well and good we respect ur opinion but dont start accusing us of wanting Marrtnez to fail on the account that we appreciate and believe what Rafa has done and still do for the club. Btw there is talk we could get both of them, plus the they good friends and dont think they would mind working together. so if they both come are u going to support them?

    ReplyDelete
  45. How will that be any different to any other England manager?  Failure with England will not make Hodgson a crap manager.  Capello failed miserable at the last major tourament; does that make him a poor manager?

    ReplyDelete
  46. SUAREZ IS RIGHT ,give man the club plus fund

    ReplyDelete
  47. Not sure I'm with you on Benitez but if everyone adopted your style of backing your team regardless of who the manager is we might have had better results in recent times.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Spot on, it wasnt just the results which were dire but the style of football was terrible. So boring to watch.

Although Kenny didnt get the results we wanted in alot of games at least we played some good football and attacked teams.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jaimie. Most Liverpool fans seen progress in our attractive playing style, our unified stance, in trips to Wembley and winning a cup. Yes we dropped one place in the league from last season, only because Kenny got the team to 7th after being near relegation under Hodgson. So we had progression and we had the most important thing that money can't buy we had a united dressing room and a united fan base, just ask AVB how important that is. So Ian Ayre said FSG want progress, well we had progress but Kenny was still sacked, they want top 4 and a rookie will never achieve that aim.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Several things to consider:

    * Massive player demotivation after Benitez's abject final season, and failure to qualify for the CL.

    * Unhappy players like Torres and Mascherano causing dressing room unrest

    * Civil war between H+G and the club, culminating in a massively publicised court case.

    Etc

Players should be professional enough to put these things to the side but outside events do affect them, and Gerrard has admitted as much several times.

This season, Liverpool lost 14 games in the league. 14!  And overall, the team failed to win 24 out of 38 games.  That is atrocious, and is a far worse record than anything Hodgson delivered.  Just because the team played prettier football doesn't mitigate that failure.

    ReplyDelete
  51. You are wrong "Superfans" do exist. These are basically the fans that watched Liverpool during the glory years and understand first hand what is required from a title winning manager and team. The problem is a lot fans now have seen mediocrity for so long that it has becaome part of their fabric. These are the same fans that didn't have a problem with the club appointing Roy Hodgson and now are clamouring for a run of the mill manager in Martinez. I find the fact that he is even on the shortlist a disgrace!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm kinda fed up with title winning managers talk. With Chelsea and City it is mandatory to be among top 2, not 3 or 4. People need to look at things in the context as both JK and Oscar say. If you you don't have money and have short squad and everyone expects you to be relegated then it's nice to be 15th. Also if we look at Wigan's playing at the end of the season they were most interesting side along with Swansea.

Personally I'd love to see good attacking football with someone like Bielsa or Sampaoli in charge. To find about Sampaoli check Universidad de Chile on Youtube.
And Universidad de Chile - Deportivo Quito is probably best football game I've ever seen. It's available on football forums, Google is your friend. It could be best spent 90 minutes of football and nice way to forget LFC woes.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Nicely put Jamie.  Nobody deserves that type of abuse, especially when all they're trying to do is their best.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Unified stance? Is that why Kuyt and Maxi publicly stated they want to leave? Is that why Suarez lied to the club about shaking Evra's hand? There's nothing unified about Liverpool under Dalglish; the only thing that unifies the club is mediocrity on the pitch, and the abject waste of money on flops like Downing and Carroll.

    ReplyDelete
  55. People are missing the point here, Jaimie was on the insider with Woy and the American cowboys and will defend them to the last while bashing everyone else who suggests they weren't wonderful. Hence his email last week to all major LFC websites, supporters groups and owners regarding, among other things, Paul Tomkins.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ask the fans of the top 6 teams in EPL if they want him to manage their team !!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hodgson was simply uninspiring for players & the fans.

    ReplyDelete
  58. he gambled and changed their formation in January and never looked back. They played excellent football with a bunch of players who most of us had never heard off. They played themselves out of danger and didnt kick themselves out. All the pundits due to their tough run in said they would still go down, but they amazed everyone with beating all the top clubs home and away.
Martinez is the man for me

    ReplyDelete
  59. What's your problem with Benitez Jaimie
K?? Is it the fact that he has Liverpool in his heart, would love to see us at
the pinnacle of English football again and has an unwavering hatred for the red
sh*te in Manchester. The same time you want to afford Martinez (and yes he
might do a good job) if you allowed it to Rafa he would produce more imo. Let's
face it it's an opinion related sport. The difference is some opinions have
greater substance (not completely fallible) as they can be backed up with
facts. Benitez has been OUR most successful manager for decades and most of
that time was spent under the previous squabbling owners. YNWA!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. You want a manager that manges a team in Chile.....incredible! What planet are some people on???

    ReplyDelete
  64. mmm a rookie from the Japanese league achieved that with Arsenal.
a person with no top club management experience nearly did it with Newcastle last season.
We have seen all the continental big guns come and go as failures in this country, Ancelotti, Capello,
Scolari, AVB, Ramos, give the man a chance he cannot do any worse than the past 2 managers.

    ReplyDelete
  65. What you are not seeing Ash is the Paisleys and Shankleys were great because of Liverpool they were not rated like they are today when they turned up.
No matter how great of a manager you are if u do not have the talent you go no where.

    ReplyDelete
  66. When he was manager, I had problems with (amongst other things) his man-management; deliberate manipulation of the fans; constant public politicking and conflict with the hierarchy (and not just H+G - Rick Parry, Broughton, Purslow etc) etc

I don't dispute that Rafa did good things for LFC too - he did, and he deserves respect for those; but (IMO) it was the right thing for him to go in 2010. It's never been personal; I'm sure he's a top man in real life; it's just about his management approach.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The benitez crowd will give no one a fair crack of the whip if martinez is givin the job we should all be behind him.

    ReplyDelete
  68. and what about when he was manager at inter?  i quote '"hodgson managed to get his Inter team, containing Javier Zanetti, Youri Djorkaeff and Ince, through to the 1997 UEFA Cup Final where they played Schalke 04. Given that Inter had a recent history of winning UEFA Cup finals, with victories in both 1990 and 1994, the Italian side started as favourites. When the German underdogs won the final in Milan on penalties, Inter fans pelted Hodgson with coins and lighters."

    ReplyDelete
  69. Not sure I agree. If Shankly had gone to Newcastle then they would be where we are today. I believe it was Shankly that built Liverpool. However I do believe that the greatest asset a manager posses ahead of motivation and tactics and all that crap is being able to identify a player that will fit into a system...in other words be brilliant in the transfer market.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Kuyt and Maxi want to leave because they are 30+ and in their twilight years, they can't afford to be in the squad, they need to be in the team playing every week, neither would be guaranteed a start in any of the top teams in the EPL. Suarez didn't deliberately lie he's just an idiot who failed to see the big picture. Every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market, we will see next season just how big Kenny's where as it is to soon to write any  player off after just one season. Overall we never heard of player discontent or had any protests at the ground and it appeared we were all singing from the same sheet so that to me is unification. But my point isn't about defending Kenny it's about how much time will FSG give a new manager? If we are out of the cups early and in the top 7 come next May will that be considered progress?

    ReplyDelete
  71. If "ANY" supporter cannot be loyal to Kenny Dalglish who was 1 year into a 3 year contract and had the team playing great stuff at times (how many teams have "EVER" pinned Arsenal back like that in a game??), then what chance does any potential manager have, owner are making a public circus out of this, remind you of anything??

    ReplyDelete
  72. You're wrong. Liverpool finished 6th last season, 10 points off 4th. This season LFC finished 8th, 17 points off 4th spot. That's not progress, that's regression.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Why not Unai Emery? If he can do wonders in a selling club like Valencia, why not give him a chance at LFC? The only person who bettered him in Valencia was Rafa, but circumstances were different then and Valencia at Rafa's period was a club that actually wanted to win something.

    ReplyDelete
  74. he's king of the kop lol

    ReplyDelete
  75. Jamie are you a journalist of any kind? In fact are you even a Liverpool fan? Seems to me that you never have anything positive to say about the club or its fans....Man united fan in disguise or is it Everton? All i can say is thank god your opinions on LFC and the direction it should take managerially or strategically count for nothing in the grand scale of things. idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  76. He did have those core players of Silva, Mata, Villa etc... for a couple of years before they started to sell and he still never really challenged for anything...thats why I wouldn't have him

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hiring Martinez would be a huge risk considering he is inexperienced in managing a big club. We all know that Rafa has a reputation of winning plenty of titles. AVB is pretty much the same case as Rafa. So would Liverpool want a manager that come to the club to test his ability and gain experience? Or would they hire someone who has already proved his managerial skills? I personally would pick Rafa any day. Forget about beautiful attacking play, total football, or whatever. I don't care if we play boring football. As long as we get the right results week in week out.

    ReplyDelete
  78. LISTEN EXPERTS - Do you know or play football better than Suarez - of course you dont and if he admires Martinez then time to shut up

    ReplyDelete

  81. the fact that under hodgson we were third from bottom is enough for me to think he is/was not the answer.

Hounded? i'm not surprised after he publically BACKED Ferguson in his criticism of Torres -  he committed treason that day and for me deserved to be taken out and shot a la Escobar IMO. Add to that the perfomance against Everton in which he said it was our best ever performance that season . . . well,  do the math... he was blatantly out of his depth and was exposed. For me it was the not defending Torres after the game, - as I said,  treason!

Just cos he's landed the England job doesn't mean we have "lost out" as you seem to b implying.

  82. the funny thing here is Jamie u giving us  Rafa fans so much power, in essence u r saying we have the power to remove managers of liverpool r u saying we solely responsible for getting Roy sucked? r u saying we r responsible for getting Kenny sucked,if we have so much power Rafa should be back by now or never even sucked, truth of matter as much as we may want him the decision rests with the board, if the results r not up to scratch whoever is there will get sucked even if its Rafa, jus look at Kenny who had some real supporters, dont  start pointing the fingure at us Rafa fans when a manager is sucked point the finger at the manager who is failing to deliver

  90. I always felt he made the best of a bad situation and in the end was a victim of his own success. I agree with the man-management to a point, but it also meant meant he demanded respect. Could you imagine Gerrard shooing him away?
He worked with an awful board that almost ruined us and if anything, he highlighted the issues that many would not have known.

    ReplyDelete
  91. If we go for Martinez and he hits the ground running the fans will back him, if we lose a few early on then he might get some abuse. I personally wouldn't mind if he was given the job, his teams play attractive, attacking football. Something which Hodgson never did. Martinez has done a great job at Wigan with limited resources, he gets the best out of lesser quality players and seems to have an eye for talent. To bring Rafa back in would be a mistake.

  92. I don't have a problem with any new manager, my problem is with the expectations of FSG. I expected Kenny Dalglish to be given time and I would expect any new manager to be given time. But FSG seem to want instant success in the league and I fear we are turning into a Chelsea.

  93. I think a Benitez return at some point is inevitable, and to be honest, I wouldn't have that much of a problem with it. Experiences change people, and I'm sure Benitez has learned a lot over the last 3 years, and he'd probably come back a better manager. I don't think he's the right man to lead the club forward right now though.

  97. There's a difference between Hodgson and Martinez, one plays negative football, and the other plays positive minded football. I'm pretty sure that I speak for a majority of the fans when I say that the fans were not displeased with Hodgson, but just his style.

  102. We didn't progress in the league, that is true and very evident. But we did progress in our playing style, we did get to Wembley twice, we did win our first silverware in 6 years, we got back into the Europa League and we got rid of a lot of dead wood and added a few quality additions to the squad. That sounds like progress to me.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I pity Martinez if he gets the job. As Jamie as already hinted, Liverpool's dunderhead fans will make the job next to impossible for him.

    ReplyDelete
  104. FSG aren't interested in domestic cups, they want top four at all costs. With this expectation and pressure I would not expect any manager to play anything other than the kids in the domestic competitions from now on. Kenny learned the hard way, Liverpool no longer exist to win trophies they exist to finish in the top four.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Progress should be quantified:

    * Liverpool progressed in the cup competitions; that is indisputable, but winning the Carling Cup is practically irrelevant. The league is what matters.

    * Dalglish replaced cheap dead wood with ridiculously expensive dead wood. That's regression, not progress IMO.

    * The club got into the Europa League by default; it's hardly a singular achievement. "Fair Play' winners also get into the Europa League. I'm sure you and other fans would've preferred qualifying for the EL via league placing...?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I won't mind Martinez either as i think he is a good manager but he won't attract any big player and if he fails then we would fall further behind in the league and it will become even more tougher for the club to rise forward.
IMO Liverpool can't afford to take a risk on an unproven manager, they have to bring an experienced manager with good track record and i think  someone like Benitez or Capello, etc would be good choice. Successful managers attract big players and only way Liverpool can attract any big player is by appointing manager with great CV.

  108. Ill support any manager we get pending results but I have to ask myself this.
If Martinez fails then who will  become the next manager of Liverpool? This is a very big gamble and a step down. Can he attract big names to Liverpool? Can he control the big egos of players at the club?

Bottom line if he wins games then everyone is behind him but if he loses then he is in trouble and we  willget  our next manager from the lower leagues.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I am not sure how you can conclude there is no fan or media pressure in Portugal when compared to the premier league.
It seems very cliché to diminish every other league or country in the world that's not England  simply because it is standard speak to assume there is more pressure in the premier league.
It may be helpful if there was supporting evidence to imply there is less pressure given every time I watch Portuguese teams in Europe get fervent support from their fans and have seen Porto and Benfica fans out-sing premier league sides here in England.
The manger turn-over rate over in the Portuguese top league makes Chelsea manager.s job look like a contract for life.
If you also are in a position to speak and read Portuguese newspapers you will find they are just like the English press who go looking for rumours and anything controversial to sell their products.
If you compare significant games like Benfica- Porto, Celtic-Rangers, Barca-Real, River-Boca, Liverpool-United then you will realise that the biggest Premier league games are not necessarily the biggest in terms of passion.
On the other hand if your argument was there is less money to spend in Portugal than England then yes that is a valid point.
If you also argue that the premier league has a far broader reach in terms of people watching it then yes that is also a valid point but to use these points to argue that it brings more pressure then I have to disagree because it's not global reach that usually defines passion but rather domestic fans.
When H & G where ousted, it was local pressure groups such as SOS protesting but then it was so unprecedented that the local media was shocked and when Blackburn fans and media got so vitriolic in attacking their Indian owners and Scottish manager, it got rather unsavoury because pressure like this is a new thing in England yet common place almost everywhere else.

  112. Superfans indeed! Rafa was averaging 55.43% with owners and boardroon staff and absolute, ungrateful morons hindering him. That's including the first and last season which are extremely unfair to include, given the abysmal situation he was in. He managed 53.37% at Valencia in which he manage to mould Valencia into a title winning team on two occasions with much work needed to be done.

Now we are looking at relegation battling team managers, claiming this is the wag forwards after getting turned down by many and dragging our good name through the mud. Will Man U or Arsenal consider Rogers, Martinez or AVB after his dire spell? Enough said!

Rafa is the ONLY candidate for me and I'm not a Super Fan! I'm just a supporter/realist that sees things for what they are!

He knows what needs to be done, how to get Reina to keep clean sheets, how ti recruit the Skrtels, Aggers, Alonso's, Lucas's and Torres's for a nominal fee and get the best out of them. He was the one that brought Kenny back into the setup, understood our values, felt emotional at the Hillsborough Memorials, gave money to charity, brought ex Barcelona coaches to revolutionise the academy, to get us to two finals in the CL, bringing us unforgetable Nights like Istanbul, to outwit Mourinho numerous times tactically, to get us within a whisker of the title with 86 points, to get us feared at Fortress Anfield, to rile and worry Fergie and to have managers emulate his "rotation policy" to mitigate demanding seasons!

Voted as the best team in Europe at one point! This was only 3-4 seasons ago on a paltry 16m net a year which was offset by CL earnings and player sales easily.

Rafa if given the time, funding and backing will have the tactics and ability to recuit players that will get us overachieving again. We were close to if not equal to that Valencia team that systematically destroyed us and overachieved against the two Giants in that 2008-2009 season.

I'm sorry but let's collectively pull our heads out of our arses and see that we went backwards after appointing Hodgson who never understood Liverpool and never had a CV or playing style that befitted the Club. He is good at getting mediocre teams with low expectations to play negative, kick and rush style football.

Did Rafa get Valencia and Liverpool to play this way and achieve the successes he had? He may have concentrated on playing a rigid style to begin with in order to have time to build the spine of the team and eventually progress to a very modern, high pressure, high work rate, quick countering, crushing style which worked more often than not.

Anyway, to conclude I will back whoever FSG recruits but believe that the quickest, sure fire way to regain the gap between our rivals is to give the experienced Spaniard a 2nd chance with 30 million + player sales.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Of course the league matters but 2 trips to Wembley and our 1st trophy in 6 years can't be so easily discounted. The jury is out on some of the transfers but only next season will tell if they are dead wood or not.
FSG have set the bar at get the team into the top 4 at all costs and forget about trips to Wembley and pleasing the fans with attractive football. I respect FSG's ambition for our club but I doubt their acumen and methodology to get us there.

Are you saying that SG is an 'overpaid primadonna with a massive ego' and he should be dumped from the England squad?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Jamie you amaze me! You stick to excuse riddled line when it comes to Hodgeson but I notice you never produce any facts. He never had a chance... honestly it's pathetic. Mind you your excuse for no facts will be he wasn't in the job long enough... Really, any arguement you put up against rafa comes from a pre determined opinion in which you assemble your facts to suit your own agender. And that seems to be to stir up fans enough to generate plenty of activity on your site. It's either that or you know very little about football and I personally dought that.

Rafa should at least be considered, it would be madness not to. He's not the only candidate but he is a good option. He's already achieved pretty much every thing FSG are looking to - consistant performance in the league with regular champions league football. He knows and loves the club with the added benefit of stong support amongst the fans, whether you like it or not.

So sure AVB could very well turn out to be great along with Martinez but I believe Rafa is a safer and more logical bet. We can't afford to be playing managerial musical chairs next summer. With Rafa we also have a more marketable identity because he is a strong leader and that's what you need. The players get paid, they shouldn't need to be cuddled every five minutes. AVB will agree with that and I suspect his attitude is quite similar to Rafa's.

If Rafa is not at least considered seriously something's wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Facts? I've posted about a dozen articles this year containing copious facts about Hodgson.

    ReplyDelete
  119. No; that label doesn't apply to everyone in the England squad. I think Gerrard should retire from the England team after Euro 2012 though. Time to give others a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I agree that he probably has learnt from a few experiences and things he did wrong. I think he would be ideal now as he will get the best out of players like Carroll and Henderson. But I do believe his assistant would be very important as they will have to relate a bit more to the players than Rafa will.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Like Man Utd were last year by Palace at home? It happens as squads are limited and the big clubs prioritise. I'd rather have the opportunity to prioritise a Champions League QF over a Carling cup semi!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Maxi and kuyt are both past it and just could not accept it.

    ReplyDelete
  123. My Choice is Rafa!!!

However it is becoming clear FSG won't do that, my leaning is towards AVB. You might wonder why?. He was rubbish at Chelsea wasn't he?. Actually no he wasn't at all, he was playing good football  but the snr players knew he was told to weed them out, the rest in history.

Abramovich backed his mates Terry, Lampard and Drogba to save face and sacked AVB. They still have to get rid of the same players, nothing has changed. Di Matteo had to pick the snr players and they end up fluking the Champions League, oh well.

Back to AVB, he has very close ties to Jorge Mendes the Potuguese super-agent, who takes the best players from Brazil and Portugal. He will be advising AVB on player recruitmient so that is very positive, quality players at the right age and price. AVB was fantastic at Porto and will be hurting about the Chelsea fiasco, he has a lot to prove.

If he comes to Liverpool he has a good squad of players at the right age, all keen to learn and improve. We already are an attacking team as we all know, 46 times total hitting the woodwork, the most corners and the most time in the opponents half etc etc. Good defensively, good in the midfield with Lucas, Gerrard, Shelvey, Henderson, Downing, Kuyt, Adam....all International players.

Then we look at strikers, Carroll coming good, Suarez a genius, Bellamy quality. We need a 4th striker who is a scorer of scruffy goals in the box, that is what we don't have yet. Along with a right-winger that would be enough for me, as long as we integrate out top kids, we know who they are.

We went to Wembley 3 times and 2 finals, this is not to be sniffed at. We beat nearly all of the better teams some multiple times, so we can play. What we need is to be organised and consistent, whilst playing progressive passing football. It's not rocket Science is it?, AVB can do the job as long as the owners support him with a structure that is adequate.

    Over to you FSG!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  124. In his defence man management these days is probably the most difficult part of the job. You've got in some cases 15-20 young millionaires who are used to having there arse wiped, so when somebody tells them to wipe it themselves there's usually a problem. Sorry for the analogy. The thing is he don't take sh*t and has very high standards (ask Zabi) which if you don't follow your out. I say fairplay.
I thought he was the best thing that happened for us for a long time and had been following his career when Valencia were taking on the mighty Madrid n Barcalona and actually winning. People talked about it being Hector Copour's squad but he didn't win anything with them. Rafa can get the best out of players by limiting there options which is why the football sometimes looks 'robot' like, his attention to detail allows players to know what they have to do to the point of how they should tie there boot laces. I was actually calling for him when things was looking bad for Houllier, I used to say to my brother we'd do alright if we could get him in.

  133. I love this myth that Hodgson is respected by the world football community, and Liverpool fans are just mental.
Why not ask some of his former employers, eh?
Ask Inter Milan. The fans there respected him so much, they pelted him with lighters and bottles after the UEFA cup final.
Ask Blackburn. He pissed money up the wall and turned erstwhile title challengers, who admittedly had faded somewhat before his entrance, into relegation battlers at the foot of the table.
Ask Udinese. A club he led to within 5 points of relegation and slagged whilst he was still employed and afterward. Spaletti took over soon after and led the Udine to the UEFA Cup playing attacking football.
Let's ask some people within in the game then.
    Bastian Schweinsteiger:
'The work Redknapp has done at Tottenham is perfect. The other one, I don't know'. Guess who 'the other one' is.
    Lahm:
'I don't know Roy Hodgson well'.
    Jupp Heynckes:
'I don't know him well. But I've followed the discussions and also heard the opinions of the national team players and they would have preferred the Tottenham manager'.
Strange considering he is the international mastermind. Just look at Finland where he achieved an impressive 27% win ratio.
Note the air of bewilderment nationwide when it was announced he, not Redknapp, was to be England manager. Ex-players, journos and fans in an unprecedented agreement that this was wrong.
So he doesn't have utmost respect from Liverpool fans. He doesn't have utmost respect from Inter fans. He doesn't have utmost respect from Udinese fans. He doesn't have utmost respect from Blackburn fans. He doesn't have utmost respect from English professionals still in the game. He doesn't have utmost respect from German professionals still in the game. He doesn't have utmost respect from England fans.
His win ratio, for his career, including his time in lesser leagues, is 42%.
Every 10 times Roy Hodgson's teams go out on the pitch, they will win only 4.
    Utmost respect.
Roy Hodgson is not 'shite', but he is a limited manager. I don't like Sam Allardyce, but he is a good manager. He, like Hodgson, is only suited for a certain job. I actually think that the England job could be okay for Hodgson. He'll never win anything, but he'll give the players a sense of purpose and England will do better, at this point in time, in backs against the wall hoofball, with Carroll up front, than they would trying to match Spain and Germany pass for pass.
Now I hope if Martinez gets the job, fans give him a chance. I suspect they'll give him the same chance that Hodgson was given and Benitez, which is utter suspicion in the man until he proves he deserves otherwise. I think Martinez would be given more time than Hodgson, due to the positive outlook he has on and off the pitch. Roy Hodgson's reign was a perfect storm of shite. He had internal strife with the ownership, a terrible style of football and couldn't get through a press conference without a bizarre statement, insulting his own players, his fans or siding with the universally despised owners. Now Martinez wouldn't have the first problem, which was not Roy's fault, but he would have to avoid the second two and having seen him, only briefly (I fell for the gentleman Roy falsehood that the media propagated until I saw him up close week after week), I suspect he would.
Personally, De Boer was very much my first choice but he has ruled himself out today. Perfect for the job in so many ways.
It looks like a straight fight between Martinez and AVB, which I suspect AVB will win.

attractive foot-ball is practiced by many teams . Especially one called Barcalona, but after losing out to Chelsea in the champions league they got a wake up call that too much attractive foot-ball with out any killer moves (by this i mean going for the jugular or simply "scoring") can backfire when you are caught in a lightening quick counter. Liverpool like Barca may have displayed some brief periods of beautiful total foot-ball but their failure to close out games cost their manager his job. Years from now no one will give a flying fuck that they played beautiful foot-ball all that people will remember is that they lost to a lot of teams in the relegation zone towards the end of the season.

If Liverpool asked them to be the new boss, they would in a heartbeat!!!

  148. Yet the Inter owner Moratti credits Hodgson for helping to stabilize the club (they only one had 1 league title in the previous 15 years before Hodgson took over. That club had mediocrity written all over it at the time and were a mess. Hodgson was the FIFTH Inter manager in just over a YEAR....FIFTH!!!) and generally, speaks highly of him. Out of the 15 managers that have been a manager at Inter since Hodgson started there, only 3 weren't sacked and one of them being Hodgson. They scored more goals than the previous two seasons before Hodgson. You don't get asked at least twice to manage Inter Milan if you aren't a good manager.

  150. You say ask his former employers. The Inter fans were not his employers at Inter. It was Moratti. Moratti has generally been always positive about Hodgson and he didn't even want Hodgson to leave in his first spell according to Hodgson. Hodgson being the one of only three managers not to be sacked as Inter manager since Hodgson's first spell at Inter. Fans aren't the best of people to look at the bigger picture always.

  151. Jaimie, i thought you were a Pro-Benitez guy?!?!?! I personally don't want Martinez at LFC, but i don't own the club.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Rightnow Liverpool need a short term fix, they need to get back in the champions league because already they are so much behind teams like Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea. If they don't do it right now, then even teams like Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle will be uncatchable. That's why Capello is a good choice, the man is a born winner and he can make Liverpool good enough to compete with the best.

    ReplyDelete
  153. More self fulfilling prophecies while slagging of LFC and the fans again.
Hodgson was resented because he replaced a world class manager in Benitez. He was rejected because he was useless, guiding us to 19th place and on equal points to 20th. Anyone who seriously believes he can be compared to either Rafa or Kenny is totally deluded. Still, your man is now the England manager so you should be ecstatic.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Everyone is 'friends' with everyone in the football world. Means bugger all, they all have too big a ego to share a job properly and successfully. Simply isn't the 'done thing', sharing the top job.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Considering we haven't won the title in two decades yet go on like we should be there, maybe we should be lowering our expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  156. A lot of LFC fans, maybe a majority, were desperate for him to fail -
that's the only way Dalglish, a 'god', could be brought back. The
players realised it pretty much from the start of that season - look at
their body language during many of Hodgson's matches (they were quite
simply a disgrace in that Blackburn game). The players knew that Hodgson
would get blamed by the fans for bad performances, not them. And that's
exactly what happened. It was a bit like "The Damned United" except with Revie waiting to get his old Leeds job back from Clough.

Is Hodgson a 'great' manager? No, but too many LFC fans never gave him a
chance. But they got their wish and Dalglish arrived but they got the
Dalglish that was Newcastle manager in 1998, not the Dalglish that was
Liverpool manager in 1988.  If you compare Dalglish's media performance
in the last 6 months at 1998 Newcastle and 2012 Liverpool you'll see the
same near-paranoia. (I don't mean this as a criticism of Dalglish per
se, I've often argued with LFC fans that Dalglish was underestimated as a
LFC manager - he took the solid pass/move football of Shankly/Paisley
and took it to another level with Barnes and Beardsley in 1988, the
first time that neutrals could enjoy LFC playing rather than watching
    them 'kill' yet another game).

Martinez is a good manager in the making, bright and ambitious -
perhaps a bit like Shankly in 1959. But Shankly didn't have the handicap
of too many impatient fans wanting a 'god' from day one, which is the
situation Martinez will find himself in at LFC. Whoever gets the job
will find that the toughest part of the job will be managing the fans
expectations. Rodgers could see that. Will Martinez or AVB see that,
particularly with Benitez playing the part of the 'god' this time
    around?

    ReplyDelete
  157. First sentence should contain "were desperate for Hodgson to fail"

  158. Thought I was actually reading the newsof the world when i read the thread starter, utter rubbish for me. If you went the game you would have seen how we set up under Hodgson. He set us up to play in exactly the same way as every lower league side he's ever managed. It's the only way he knows how to play, it's the same methodology everywhere he's been and it will be no different with England. Two banks of four, gernerally retreated when we lose the ball to deny space behind and look to play on the counter. Seeing a Liverpool side regularly bossed in the possession stakes was embarrassing. I notice the media are going easy on Hodgson's time at LFC, "It was the impossible job, he wasn't Dalglish, it wasn't his fault blah blah blah blah. Well that's fine (for them and you) but I think most Liverpool fans know better. The other stuff couldn't have helped but Hodgson was "hounded" out of Anfield because of the turgid defensive football his teams played all season. He was a master in lowering expectations and talking up shi...te performances. No thanks, England can have him. Bizarre as it is, if Chelsea can park the bus all the way to the European Cup then perhaps it'll work with England as well. It worked for Greece.

  159. Any manager at a team in a relatively good situation (such as Rodgers or De Boer or Deschamps) would be crazy to walk into the wasps nest that's Liverpool right now. So Martinez, AVB or Benitez look the most likely.

  162. Most ridiculous article i have ever read Liverpool fans did not 'hound' the manager from day one, he simply didn't cut it. We embrace any manager who gets the job, but isn't every fan allowed their skepticism's before they are appointed. Any manager regardless of his calibre is a risky appointment.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I say let's ask his former employers and then clearly point out that it was the fans that didn't like him. I wasn't trying to mislead. I am aware Moratti has been positive about Hodgson. Maybe Moratti isn't the best judge. Inter haven't done so well since Mourinho left. He sacked Mancini (though that worked out to be fair) and Simoni the day after he won the manager of the year award and Cuper after he had led them to within one game of their first title in 13 years.

Maybe fans don't always look at the big picture, but a clever manager, and more importantly a positive one, can illicit some patience.

Rafa and Houllier both had some terrible results early on, but neither were as universally unpopular as Hodgson. Roy did have some bad luck, but he got more or less everything in his control wrong at Liverpool. There were next to no positives. He engendered a similar mistrust in Inter fans. Coincidence?

  166. Martinez took over Wigan the season after they finished 11th. In 3 seasons since, they have finished 16th, 16th & 15th with him in charge.Hardly inspiring is it?We're linked with a number of managers, each who have a CV far more impressive than Martinez'. Massive step backwards if FSG are stupid enough give him the job.2 logical choices are AVB or Rafa....YES!! Rafael Benitez.Rafa is desperate for another shot, I have more confidence in breaking back into the Top 4 or higher with Rafa than any of the other 'candidates'.The added bonus of having Rafa back is the fact it will piss off all the gobshites who claim to be fans.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Jamie, wake up n smell the roses. Roy Hodgson is a top class plonker England will soon find out.The negative football we played under that man was shocking and abysmal. I remember getting beat 2 nil by Everton and he said "that's the best we've played so far this season". Kenny Dalglish at least had us playing good entertaining stuff although he did make strange decisions, who doesn`t. Rafa had and still has LFC at heart although he did make strange decisions towards the end imo had to do with them two other plonkers H & G. Whoever comes in deserves the full backing of owners and fans alike.I personally would take Rafa back before the others as he has achieved more and has some unfinished business to do.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Surely you can see that narrowly losing matches by playing good football, like against Arsenal this season, is more promising than losing at home to Wolves playing terrible football.

I also don't buy the demotivated players thing. A better motivator, and more importantly more positive manager, could have got players back on their feet. Hodgson was trying to manage expectation from day one, so he could try and excuse his mediocrity. At first I thought it was sensible, trying to create a quiet progression, then it became transparent as being pre-emptive exoneration for what would follow.

I do agree that the Hicks and Gillet problems were a major hindrance though.

Also, as a season ticket holder, I back what Rob Pope said- early on people were slightly (and only slightly, as I've said, new managers should be greeted with a certain suspicion) positive about Hodgson. He was the one that sucked out all the goodwill he could have enjoyed.

When the die was cast, and it was obvious how poor his reign would be, then some so called supporters did act in an unedifying fashion, that I will grant you.

  169.  Martinez had the opportunity to spend £100m on new players to take Wigan to the next level ... oh-oh sorry, that was someone else at another club. a lot of interesting  comments on here as always. I will come out and say that I prefere Mark Hughes for the job but as he is not even being considered I will go with Roberto Martinez. I will tell you why I prefere Martinez over Andres Villas Boaz.

Both Managers have limited experience in the premier league.  Roman Abromovich plucked AVB after he took Porto to the top of the Portugese league. It was seen a quite the accomplishment for someone so young. He was the man that Abromovich identified as the man to take his team to champions league victory . Now we all know that it was his assistant who did that instead.

Roberto Martinez had a terrible first half of the season , as his team was routed by a number of different premier league clubs. (I am not a super fan or I would have some of the  stats and score lines handy) Needless to say Wigan's performance was terrible leading many to believe that Wigan they would be one of the clubs heading down. In the later part of the season Martinez was able to take stock of his squad and identify its strengths and weakness of and "ADJUST" his tactics accordingly. I have the word "adjust" in caps because I think this is the key component that makes some managers average and others legendary. I am not calling Martinez a legend but I think it takes a special manager to get a team to band together and play foot-ball like their lives depended on the results. Being near the drop zone brings usually puts everything in perspective. Like you well know not everyone is capable of getting the best out of their squads when the pressure is on.

AVB failed to "adjust" his tactics sufficiently to fit his team. The Portuguese league is a much highly technical league than the English Premiere League, and he wanted to reproduce that beautiful foot-ball at Chelsea and that was impossible with Chelsea's aging squad.  Chelsea's performance suffered a lot and he was sacked in March. His predecessor reverted to the style Chelsea where familiar with which is a style in which attack is not the emphasis. We all defend and then we hit you on the counter. Di Matteo utilized this and won the Champions league . Something that even Morinho (I can't spell for shit) failed to do with Chelsea. I think we can also see in the case of Liverpool this season a manager who failed to adjust his tactics accordingly to fit the style best suited for his team. He failed to IMO understand the quality of the players he had signed and game after game he ran out of excuses to explain the poor performance of the squad.

To sum this up I believe the ability to pick the right system for the team you have remains most important component to making anyone great manager. The same system that worked with a team in Portugal won't necessary work with a team in England. Martinez in my opinion showed the awareness of understanding the players he coached and how to best utilize their strengths. I believe that keeping a team up out of the drop zone with a bunch of mediocre talent is harder to do than winning the league when you have top class expensive talent.

Martinez may not be too experienced a and he may not have managed a really big ambitious club but between he and AVB I think he understands the game in the Premiere league better and in my opinion should be the man for the job.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I'd agree that Benitez is the best qualified for the LFC job that's available in the sense that he'd get more time to succeed from the fans than either AVB or Martinez - he's have a longer 'honeymoon' than any other new manager. Also he wouldn't have to worry about an 'Anfield Legend' waiting in the wings that would cause the fans to lose faith in the new manager after the first few inevitable defeats. Maybe FSG should just hire him and get it over with - if it works out well and good, if it doesn't then fire him and then they can begin with a clean slate with no more 'messiahs' available. Newcastle did the same thing more or less with Keegan and Shearer before they sorted it out. Maybe it was something that had to be done.

  175. Great point about Martinez adjusting during the season. If it was just about football then Martinez or Hughes would be good choices - both have done reasonably well in the Premier League for more than one season given the resources they had/have. But its not just about football - LFC is akin to a religion so whoever the new manager is he will have to 'understand' that. Hodgson didn't (and the players knew it). Dalglish did, so he could do no wrong as far as most fans were concerned (even though LFC had their worst league season since they won promotion!). The new manager will need to 'understand' LFC as well - and that means Benitez. Either now or in a year or so when the alternative is hounded out for not 'understanding' LFC, with Stevie Me and the rest looking as disinterested as they did in the first half of the 2010-2011 season.

I think martinez would cop it more than Roy did  - this time it would be both pro rafa and the kenny FC factions on his back  - and thats an awful lot of our fanbase that would be against the man .

After the season in the league we've had and the money we've wasted we are in no position to slate anyone  - even Roy.

  182. Hodgson was doing a good job and the fans didn't see that, they threw their toys out of the pram because of the tactics for the final. Because of one defeat, they forgot where they were when Hodgson took over. They were second from bottom. Hodgson was their fifth manager in little over a year, FIFTH. I watched Serie A heavily in the 90s and that was probably the first time, they looked like a decent unit, instead of a divided squad. All too easy pointing to what happened after the final, look at what happened beforehand and that is that Hodgson steadied the Inter ship in the league and they scored more goals in the league than they did in the two seasons before. They finished in the second half of the table two seasons before Hodgson took over. Inter back then were light years away from the force they were under Jose. Too easy to cherry pick the bad bits on the internet and make out it was a disaster, when it wasn't, not even close.

Mancini got sacked because he did a horrible job with Inter in CL. What did Moratti want after dominating Serie A? CL....there and then.

Inter haven't done well since Jose left because Jose isn't one of those managers that think about the long term, he is about immediate success. Moratti wanted CL and so did Jose, so the transfer policy was all about getting it right in the short term, with very little thinking about (apart from Ranocchia, Balotelli and Coutinho. Biabiany is just mediocre.) the long term (i.e. getting the best players, regardless of age and future planning). To be fair, it obviously worked as they won CL, Moratti achieved his dream and Mourinho satisfied his ego once again. Now Inter are paying the price for not planning for the long term during Jose's and Mancini's era.

The reason why Hodgson left was because he couldn't put up with the boardroom politics, that is what he said in an interview anyway (remember he wasn't sacked). There are lot of football politics involved with Inter, that was the downfall of Cuper as it was no secret at the time that he wasn't a well-liked coach and add to that, his ultra defensive-style (He had the team playing long ball tactics to Vieri plenty of times, with two banks of four defending deep) of football with a group of players that had the talent to play some great football was irritating. Conceicao was outstanding in that superb Lazio side but Cuper stifled the fuck out of his talent at Inter. That still cheeses me off as I was a fan of him and he could've been a rare Serie A winger legend, up there with Nedved but he got ruined at Inter. Cuper would, in games like the one against the mediocre Atalanta when it was level, take off his scorer and set up 4-6-0 for the remainder of the game and getting the team to not go for a win. He did that kinda ultra-defensive stuff often, he did it against Milan in CL when he took off Crespo and got the team defending way deep...Milan still scored. Liverpool fans would have his head within minutes, if Cuper played that kind of long ball defensive football at Anfield, going by how long it took my fellow fans to ask for Hodgson's head. Cuper did some great things in his managerial career but his tactics can be defensive, very at times and you just can not do that on a consistent basis as he did at Inter, especially settling for draws against mediocre teams. It wasn't a surprise that Cuper got sacked at the time, as his head was on the chopping block well before it happened. He wasn't a popular chap.

  183. Jamie normally like your stuff but have to disagree. The concern with Martinez is past experience totally unproven not a risk we want to take. Net spend irrelevant because we would like a proven coach. Hodgson was awful, style of play, away from home and all the fans knew he would fail you can't blame them for his awful record. Compared with kd he was inferior as kd won something that's what it's about.

Benitez is proven he managed lfc in turmoil and did a good job, if h&g hadn't ruined things I think the prem league would have arrived, so better than roberto.

  184. Why would I backtrack? You have spectacularly missed the point of that article. I did not take Suarez's comments to mean that he wanted to leave for Spain now, and there's nothing in the article that hints at that. It's quite clear what I was getting at:

    * Suarez should not have been talking about playing in Spain on the day Dalglish got sacked.

    * Suarez should never admit to dreaming of playing for any other team whilst he's a Liverpool player.

    * When asked the question, he could've just said that La Liga is a good league; he specifically chose to say 'it's every player's dream to play there'. People say things for a reason, either consciously and subconsciously, and Suarez was sending a message that he is amenable to a la liga move.

Let's be perfectly honest Benitez is the most successful manager we have had in recent history. He took Liverpool to the promised land of champions league victory in a time when no other English club other than Man U could even come close. For this reason he will always be respected and admired. What you have failed to understand is that Benitez did not understand the Liverpool way till he actually came to Liverpool. Before Liverpool he was busy wining champions league with Valencia which is why he was an attractive option for Liverpool. There is no doubt that Benitez will return to Liverpool sometime in the future. Just because of the support his getting from many fans like you Phaaz it is inevitable.

Martinez can also learn the Liverpool way . Having coached in the league he is well aware of Liverpool and some of it's history. Anyone with a pulse working in the league will. He can learn even more about the traditions and history of the club while he is working at the club.

I think Martinez can succeed at Liverpool if he gets the funds and backing he needs. I know for a fact that he would have spent 100 million quid a lot better than Kenny. That is for sure.

  186. Yup! but its not wigan who were up to lfc level but we stooped to their level. If u compare like this then how many points difference was there between liverpool and Roy Hodgson's West Brom?? Fewer than Wigan, right? SO ur philosophy says Hodgson wud be a suit for us too (Villa's sacked manager wud be a candidate too). IMO We had a very poor season, whoever we want as manager, don't compare the candidate's team with our team. Instead compare Wigan or whichever team with the top 4 teams. Compare Utd's or City's performance with Wigan then say if MArtinez will be right for us. Sincerely i wud nt mind having Alan Pardew as manager, but plz not Martinez. But in a perfect world i wud choose btwn Rafa, Klopp or AVB!

Good point Jamie in your article - if the new manager isn't a  certain Spaniard then the Benitez boot boys will be out in force from day one. I can already anticipate their comments if he is appointed, however. End of September - don't judge Rafa now, we were always going to lose the odd game before he sorted everything out. Christmas - He's only been there a few months - give him a chance. Judge him at the end of the season. End of season - it would be madness to sack him. He was left a load of rubbish players and given no money to buy new ones. It's not his fault we didn't make the top ten. Give him another season and you'll see we are challenging for the title. The point I was making is that you insulted his character by saying he "stabbed us in the back". I could suggest that you "should" not say such a thing, but it wouldn´t make a blind bit of difference, because you´re an individual and you say whatever you want. He was asked a question and he answered it. It´s a perfectly normal thing to say. In your last point, you´re reading between the lines. You don´t know that´s why he said it. Could it not be it was a natural reaction to a question? Most players would love to play in Spain one day.

Also, he didn´t say he was dreaming of playing for any team. He said he dreamt of playing in the league. You´ve misquoted him there.

It´s likely that the twitter question thing was set up before he knew Daglish was being sacked.

One thing is for sure. You attacked him with that comment, and you do it often. You´ve got a vendetta out for him Jaimie. Now that he´s cleared up his intentions (he wishes to stay with Liverpool) I was wondering if you might want to revise your opinion that he stabbed us in the back (forceful image no?), because it appears you were wrong about that.
