Hansen warns: 'Poor' LFC must beat Chelsea or this season is a failure. Agree...?

Anfield legend Alan Hansen hates the idea of his old team being labelled a 'cup side', but that's exactly what Liverpool is at the moment, and the former Reds captain has warned that the season will be seen as a failure unless the club wins the FA Cup later today.

Speaking to the BBC ahead of today's crunch match with Chelsea, Hansen - who played in three FA Cup finals during his Anfield career - bemoaned Liverpool's status as a Cup side, but conceded that winning two cups this season would be 'relatively successful. He added:

"League form has been poor, and not good enough at Anfield. They've taken a lot of criticism, and quite rightly so, but if they win the game today, it will definitely save their season.

If they lose I wouldn't be so sure about saving the season. Winning the Carling Cup and losing in the FA Cup final? No [it's not good], especially if you're finishing 7th or 8th in the league".

It will be fantastic to win the FA Cup, but I'm not sure that it will 'save Liverpool's season'. In the immediate afterglow of victory, it may seem that way, but the reality of the club's shockingly poor league form will soon return, and in the final analysis, FSG will surely see that regression in the league after spending 131m on transfer is just not good enough.

Under Dalglish, Liverpool's record against Chelsea is excellent: three straight wins, and hopefully that will continue today.

  1. unfortunetly we've been a cup team a long time and as long as 4th is the aim thats all we'll be. we have to start aiming to win the league. the CL is a great compitition but spurs arsenal and hopefully the scum wont have won a tap this season where as we could end up with 2 cups. do you think van persie would like to count medals or CL last 16 memories at the end of his career. we have alot of guy's who havnt been in europe and they will enjoy the europa league but we need to sign guy's to help us win the league. if next season reina, agger, skrtyl, lucas, gerrerd, suarez and hopefully a couple of real good ones were told to just focus on the premier league i think we would have a great shot at actually winning the thing. i also believe we have the squad and the kids to cope in the cups. anyone of the same opinion?

  2. im not too optimistic about today, dalglish has 3 wins in his last 3 games vs chelsea and we've beaten them twice this year, we've been twice at wembley and won maybe the third time wont be for us, time for another team to get the joy there, dont know, i feel luck wont follow us today but chelsea yes, dont get me wrong im dying to win this one as any other lfc fan but i just feel it wont be our day, hopefully im wrong, plus im 100% we'll get disappointed by the team dalglish picks, he always seem to screw up on that, add that one too, bellamy has got to start dont think he will, henderson CANT start, he will etc.

  4. Its NOT good enough and that once solid spine is now showing signs of cracking.

Pepe = poor season, Carra = aged, Lucas = injured, Stevie = ageing but not out, Forwards = post hitters.

Good thing is Skrtel and Agger are solid as is Enrique, and Johnson depsite all his haters is very talented. Combine this with the youthful snappyness of Spearing the calm ball recyling-one touch passing of Henderson and add pace/guile of Bellamy and positioning/finishing of Maxi to the undoubted pressurising craft, aggression and quality of Suarez and Gerrard and you have a team that can beat anyone on their day.

    Is today our day?

  5. Not even on FA Cup Final day do you have something positive to say, a message of good luck, praise for getting there, nothing. How typically pathetic.

Our chances are very good, but all depends on the team Dalglish will select. I've clearly lost faith in his team selection. Why he keeps selecting Henderson ahead of Kuyt and Maxi puzzles me. Still fancie our chances though.

  8. Totally agree with Alan and many other past great liverpool players, we lose today and the season is a disaster, anyone thinks differently is an embarrassment to liverpool fc.
The club is built on a winning mentality and not finishing 8/9th with a mickey mouse cup.  15 months is a longtime in football management and for all of the excuses...well u just need to look at alan pardew @ newcastle who also had to win over the geordie fans of his appointment and lets not mention his transfer policy as it would expose KD even more....total respect to Alan Pardew.
Anyway for today I'm going to join the deluded fan brigade and hope we pull it off as the odds are against us.  Chelsea are in fine form and to be honest our visits to wembley despite the win have not been great.  Too many players fail to deliver and I'm hoping carragher, downing or spearing are not automatic starters.  How much of a good feeling would it be to have sterling on the bench and see him come on and do some damage.  Again wishful thinking and expect to him to be overlooked again.

Good luck boyz, lets win the fa cup and end a disappointing season on a high!!!

  9. I just hope FSG will ask KD to go regardless of the results of the FA Cup. He and Comolli has set LFC back for years, both results on pitch and financially. I really don't want LFC to become a cup team, always doing reasonably well in domestic cups and middle table placing in the league.

    Win the FA Cup, LFC!

  10. Do you think Van Persie would prefer playing against Cardiff City or AC milan?

  12. You have to say that this season has certainly been a failure, we need to move on, make some BIG changes...and move. Simple as.

  13. Spearing symbolises how a professional should be. Ooooozes class with 2 deadly feet. LOL. The sad thing is, Foolgish actually believes he like alot of the current squad are good.

  14. To be fair, with Adam and Lucas injured there was not much scope to pick a holding midfielder OTHER than Spearing.

And "Foolgish"???? Absolutely hilarious. A career writing headlines for the S*n beckons, surely.

  15. Spearing was one of the best players in the field, why are you no getting on Henderson? he is the crap player or probably KG's love child, what the heck are you talking about? KD at least deserves a P45! its about time... Rafa back
