Agent confirms 'interest' in £17m LFC midfield target. Competition for Lucas?

When Rafa Benitez was in charge of Liverpool, he tried to sign Real Madrid's 'B' Team midfielder Javi Garcia, the cousin of Reds hero Luis Garcia. The move didn't happen, but the Spaniard's Agent recently revealed that a 'good offer' in the summer could secure his services. Unfortunately, Garcia recently signed a new contract, so it looks like any potential move for the player is now dead. Or is it?

Liverpool's interest in the player was confirmed by Garcia in 2007:

"My colours are Real Madrid but if it's impossible to play there then England is a sensational country and Liverpool is a historic club."

Liverpool were linked with Garcia again recently, but in a recent interview with Radio TSF, Garcia's agent, Manuel Garcia Quillon confirmed that no offers had yet been received.

Garcia signed a new contract with Benfica in March, but rumours still persist about a possible transfer away this summer, with Chelsea the latest club to show an interest in the player.

This week, Quillon admitted that Premier League clubs were still interested in Garcia, but insisted yesterday that the midfielder would be staying at Benfica:

"There have been interested clubs, but no offers have been made yet"

The versatile midfielder can also play in defence, and if Liverpool were to bid for him, the fee would reportedly be somewhere between £17 and £25m.

Central midfield is an area in which Liverpool lack genuine strength in depth at the moment, and top quality reinforcements are needed this summer. The club surely cannot go into next season with Jay Spearing and Jordan Henderson as first choice midfielders...? Additionally, like all players, Lucas would benefit from some proper competition.

Worth a bid?

  1. This agent is renound for pimping his players out at the end of season in order to generate a move....

There are better out there at that price...Mario Suarez for example...

  2. Liverpool need a defensive midfielder as cover for Lucas and a creative midfielder, don't think Javi Garcia is either of them, he is more of a box to box midfielder like Gerrard and we already have Shelvey and Henderson as cover. So don't think we need him.

  3. Gaston Ramirez would be a better choice

  4. Rasmus Elm is being lined up as cover/support for Lucas...isn't he to be the Root and Branch of our midfield?

  9. Benfica usually sell one player for considerable money nearly every summer. So whether it be Gaitan, Nolito, Witsel, Garcia, etc. The likes of Porto and Benfica, with all due respect, know their place in the food chain and how to survive financially, so they buy loads of South Americans and big club cast-offs for cheap and hope a few sell big, whilst during that transition period hope they achieve domestic and continental success.

  10. Elm plays in central midfield, usually as a deep lying central midfielder a la Xabi/Carrick/Pirlo, though can play bit more forward. If you seen him play, you would know he hasn't got much pace at all to be a winger

  11.  There are several holes in the Liverpool side i do not think Garcia will be a priority and after reading the Echo, Kennies comments about fine tuning the team do not inspire confidence.
